10 Great Cuban Pizzas To Try Around Miami - Miami - The Infatuation

"Like the beat of Celia Cruz’s “Quimbara” beckoning you into spontaneous dance, the pizza-covered windows of Kasalta Pizza are hard to miss from Red Road. This place has a dough that is light and fluffy, with a perfectly crunchy crust. They definitely don’t skimp on toppings either, and the vegetable pizza is stuffed with peppers, black olives, thinly sliced onions, and mushrooms—in case you’ve been feeling guilty about your vegetable intake lately. Inside it’s a bit tight, but they do have a couple of tables." - yuliet llanes, carlos c olaechea

21 Best Restaurants in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"At Kasalta, a casual bakery and diner, glass display cases house luscious-looking pastries. Expect typical Puerto Rican diner food: meaty, oversized sandwiches, all-day breakfast plates, homemade empanadas, and hearty bowls of soup. The thing to get here is the ham and cheese on sweet Mallorca bread, the perfect interplay of creamy, salty, and sweet. For dessert, don't miss the the guava pastelitos, quesitos (cream cheese puffs), and pistachio tres leches." - Kris Fordham

This place is a great local spot. They have their operational procedures down. The food is spectacular, and the coffee is great too. I had the Cuban and an Americano. Their pastry case filled with sweets was tempting, too. The place was always filled with people coming and going but it never felt crowded. I would highly recommend coming in for a visit.

Google
I came here for brunch since it was recommended by staff in the nearby hotel where I was staying. For about $20, I had an omelette, pancakes, quesito, and water. The food was okay. I think it's more popular for pastries and other dessert.

Google
This is a great spot for both savory foods, like sandwiches, and sweet foods, like pastries! There were two of us, so we were able to split up and wait in both lines at the same time which was useful for saving time. The lines didn’t move very quickly, but it wasn’t too bad of a wait. All of the food, sweet and savory, was delicious! The sandwich on Mallorca bread was unique, and I’m glad we tried it!

Goretti

Google
Recommended this spot by a local and former President Obama came here. The restaurant is divided into two sections, a sandwich line and a bakery line. The Bistec was a bit bland and heavy with the steak imagine it like a Philly cheese steak style meat and shoestring fries stuffed inside. The Cuban sandwich was a bit better because it had sour pickles to help lift up the heaviness of the sandwich. Overall the sandwiches are okay, but nothing to rave about. The desserts were fun to try, the local signature is the guava pastelito which is like a sugar coated hard puff pastry filled with guava jam. They also have cakes, flans, and other baked goods as well as chocolate bon bons if that interested you. Good for a large group setting!

Google
This place looked charming, and with such a large menu, we walked in with high expectations. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to the warm hospitality we’d experienced elsewhere on the island. The service felt a bit cold, and the food followed suit. I ordered the Mallorca with bacon and cheese, but it was overly dusted with powdered sugar, and the amount of cheese—about 10 slices—was just overwhelming. I also tried the bread pudding, hoping for a nostalgic taste from my childhood, but it fell flat and lacked the richness I remembered. It’s a beautiful spot with potential, but sadly, our experience didn’t match the promise.

Google
It’s the overpriced for what you get. The tripleta sandwich was mid at best. The quesito was decent. The coffee just okay. The line was LOOOOOONG. The staff was friendly. There is parking, but I walked there.

Fatima A. Ali

Google
This place is highly overrated. I’ve tried two different pastries and they taste nothing like they should. The palmier (palmera) was thick, dry and dense. Not flaky and light like they are from a French bakery or any good bakery. The tiramisu tasted like pancake syrup. It was also thick dry and dense and I could only eat one bite it was so nasty.

Google
I had a sandwich and coffee and my husband had a mallorca. The sandwich was really good. It is a little pricier than other bakeries but the food is really good and I would recommend. We will come back. It wasn't as busy as other bakeries as well which was good.

Yelp
I see why this place has hosted 2 sitting presidents... Everything I had here was amazing. The bacalao fritters were lightly crispy on the outside, chewy (like firm mashed potatoes) on the inside. So good! The strawberry cheesecake was fantastic. It was this spongy, airy crust that gave it an even more delight texture. The flaky pastry filled with guava filling was divine. The crispiness of the pastry combined with the tart sweetness of the guava... Absolute perfection. The apple, guava and cheese danish was a unique, local take on a classic breakfast pastry and it delivered in every way. Well worth a visit if you can make it here.

Yelp
This place was a blind pick on a beach walk. The restaurant was very welcoming and the staff was kind. They try to get you to the right place by asking if you're here to dine, to order out, (soups salads, and desserts) or a la carte. This place is near the beach and convenient to get out of the heat. The staff was less attentive once I explained I wanted a la carte. We ordered the chicken breast and salad and the burger from the lunch special. The food was not picture worthy, and I mean this kindly because the staff was nice. It's important to note that it is a Spanish diner, because otherwise you expect a Puerto Rican experience and that's not what we got hahaha.

Yelp
BOMBACLATTTT!!!! First off the restaurant is poppin'. Parking is limited so hopefully you can get a spot close by! We parked in their designated parking and they have a parking security guard that helps with coming in and out. Walking into the restaurant things are set up a lil awkward. You walk all the way inside and form the line at the end of the restaurant- sometimes standing behind people eating like in my picture. Hack** you can order sandwiches at the pastery line that's located closest to the door. Big man ting. The Cuban sandwich was pretty good but my girl loved the turkey. The coffee tho ... that thang was BUSSIN' get you a damn large cup unlike my lil kids meal one. Pretty good and fair price we paid about $30 for everything

Yelp
My wife and I were staying in San Juan and we decided to take an Uber out to this Yelp recommended restaurant and my friend told me to try the Tripleta. I got a local beer to was down the perfect cheese and meat and wonderful bread of this tripleta/Perfecta. I guess they had Obama even visit and they have a poster on the wall. Pretty cool. I wanted to try all their cheeses and it starts to fill up at lunchtime. Great place for a sammy and a beer!

Yelp
This place was down the street from my accommodation and didn't realize how storied it was until after I had landed. Asked the cashier what her favorite sandwich was and she said the spicy steak. Very filling and the fresh orange juice was tasty, a bit pricey but I guess it's expected as the island continues to go through gentrification.

Yelp
This was a great pit stop on our way to Loíza. We stopped for an afternoon snack. There's a parking lot right next to it that had plenty of empty spots at this time of the day. We tried their guava and coconut cake which was yum, and the ham, egg, cheese sandwich on Mallorca bread. The cheese in this was just incredible! The bread was certainly interesting - they sprinkle icing sugar on it... definitely worth trying if you've never had it before but not sure I'd get the bread again. The sandwich can easily be shared between two. Good portion. Also got two cappuccinos which were fairly average. There is no table service but staff are really helpful and friendly! On a side note, I thought it was interesting how there were no trash cans in the bakery (or outside). Also been told to try their guava pasteles but they had run out when we went. Next time!

Yelp
Kasalta Bakery was a 2 minute drive away from my air b n b when I was in San Juan, and we visited many times during our trip. Initially, it was a recommendation from my cousin, but when we tried it, we fell in love! Each time we visited, the bakery was lively between the workers and the guests - you can tell there were many regulars and tourists, alike! From the workers, to the pastries and breakfast options, this place felt so homey and I was elated that I could ate back into my childhood when ordered these pastries and desserts. The cafe con leche was a must every morning. Their pastelito de guayaba was to die for - I wish I had 4 more! 12/10 On another day when's I visited, I tried their flan de coco. I believe - if I'm not mistaken that they had 3 flavors of flan. But the flan de coco was also a 10/10. On the days I visited, my husband and I also had breakfast sandwiches which were delicious and fresh. Kasalta Bakery is a must visit if you are in the San Juan area! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
i look forward to eating here when in san juan but unfortunately kasalta was not hittin' this trip. sandwich felt slapped together. mallorca was dry, ratio of ham to bread was off, cheese was not given time to melt. idk if they were rushing because they were busy? or if their standards have dropped?.. sadly, gonna try to get my mallorca fix elsewhere next time.

Yelp
Why this place has so many good reviews? Mallorca tasted raw, and I ordered with butter and toasted. Ham, egg and cheese sandwich was just ok, I couldn't finish it thou. Midnight sandwich was horrible, my husband couldn't had half of it. Other thing, staff do not want to be there, they treat you like: "what are you doing here?". Worst service that we had in the island! Horrible.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast around 11am on a Sunday. I was told that their pastries and food were really good. I did enjoy the empanada but the coffee was bland. I couldn't find any sugar and they don't do flavored coffee. If you want iced, please visit elsewhere or settle for hot coffee. The line was at least a 20 min wait so I grabbed a table while my boyfriend ordered for us. I would say get there early if you're looking for sancocho as they ran out early . (I mainly went for it) but settled for an empanada. The restaurant is clean in the dining area from what I could tell and the pastries were popular. You can order to go or choose to sit but you must order in line. I learned that Obama visited here years ago which was a pretty fun fact. I would definitely come again but early enough to take advantage of their soup and sandwich.

Yelp
Fast breakfast spot with many different options of sandwiches, drinks and pastries. We got the the ham and cheese on Mallorca , guava pastries and a cappuccino. Service was great and there was a lot of seating inside.

Yelp
a favorite spot whenever I'm in San Juan!! When I'm away, I dream of the quesitos. They didn't disappoint this morning.

Yelp
This place was packed, long long line, food was mediocre and they charged me $4.99 for 1 strawberry and it was half rotten. I was so annoyed by this. This place was cafetos vibes but eh. No gracias.
google avatar

Shana S.

Yelp
Food is ok. Service is decent. Price is a lil on the pricey side for some items. Place is always clean.

Yelp
Ooooh my YELPies! Old San Juan did it to me.. this bakery/deli was within walking distance of our Airbnb. When I tell you... EVERYTHING is fresh and soooo good! From breakfast to lunch and a little sweet toothin' goodness! The service is beyond amazing given it seemed to be busy all day and everyone there had a beautiful sense of humor. The atmosphere is neighborhood familiar.. like your grandmother would take you there for coffee and danish and then for a sweet treat. It felt like home. If you ever get to SanJuan.. You would do yourself a great service to eat SEVERAL times at Kasalta

Yelp
Despite the large array of desserts, the money is in the sandwiches and sancocho. If you get one thing from here, it has to be the Mallorca. On a Tuesday afternoon, the place was half full and there was a short line to order the mallorcas. Thankfully there's a lot of seating so it wasn't hard to get a table. The vibe is casual and feels very local. After my partner ordered the food, he took the tray of food to table so there's no table service. I really enjoyed the ham and cheese mallorca which had a hint of sweetness from the powdered sugar on the bread, but was primarily savory (exactly what I wanted). The sancocho was hearty and flavorful with tender pieces of chicken, carrots, potatoes, and plantains. Paired with a creamy cortadito and I was in heaven. My partner had a cuban sandwich which was also great and the bread was nice and crispy. After our meal, we got the flan, tres leches, and coquito and chocolate truffles. The flan and tres leches were okay. The flan had a slightly hard spongy consistency which wasn't my favorite (I prefer jelly/pudding consistency flans) and the tres leches was surprisingly on the dryer side. My favorite was the coquito truffle which was rich and decadent. For a hangover and last minute breakfast before the airport, Kasalta held us down. Worth the last minute pit stop.

Yelp
this is probably the best breakfast spot in the area. it's huge cafeteria style and long wait on line but totally worth it especially in the morning. we came here twice in one day to get the desserts at the end of the night and chose guava cheese it was fantastic for breakfast i got a turkey sandwich and a bunch of empanadas. i think the best part is the cafe con leche espresso with milk which was out of this world probably the best coffee i had while on the island 10/10 A+
google avatar

Yelp
The pastries! Delicious. We're so happy we made a stop at Kasalta a part of our vacation.

Yelp
Great little breakfast place. Had the ham and cheese sandwich and a tall coffee. All wonderful. I would return.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
There was a line but wait wasn't too long. The ham, cheese and egg sandwiches were decent with freshly baked bread. It was easy to get a table for two even with all the people coming and going.

Tom K.

Yelp
Ordered delivery with Uber eats. Delivery: I paid for Express delivery and received the food later than regular delivery would have been. Also, delivery person went to the wrong address. Food: ordered pancakes ($9 US). Received 2 Pancakes, no butter, no syrup. Also, ordered tortilla española ($7.5). Overall quality above average. Food was cold, I am sure due to delayed delivery. Service: requested utensils. Despite ordering two meals, only received one set of utensils. It appears that the restaurant does not know how to take care of a delivery customer's needs. Overall: Pretty forgettable and not worth a try.

Yelp
Great service from the folks at this busy location. Heavily known for their desserts - and that Former President Barack Obama came to shop here. Desserts were yummy and coffee was hot!
google avatar

Remy F.

Yelp
I had empanadas, CHciken sandwich and croissant. All good but nothing stood out. Have a goodness for service. Prices reasonable. Ambiance so so but solid for what it's going for which is a simple bakery.
google avatar

Polly H.

Yelp
Delicious bakery. I like the vibe inside here. Beautiful windows to let in the light. There is so much seating and also lots of different things to try. I had the Mallorca with ham and cheese. I would describe the Mallorca as a big croissant with granulated sugar on top. It was so good. When you place your order, walk over to the counter, where the register is, and wait your turn. The lady at the front spoke mostly Spanish, but some English. I saw many random items worth noting. They serve alcohol here, and also have chocolates like truffles. There are so many sandwich options and also fresh coffee available. We enjoyed the food so much that we went back to order some dessert like flan.
google avatar

Marcus H.

Yelp
Food - We ordered the ham and cheese sandwich, ham, egg, and cheese croissant, and a guava danish. Food tasted great! Really enjoyed the danish, will hopefully be back before my vacation is over to try out a few other dishes. Service - Staff was friendly and explained menu items as needed. We didn't interact with them much outside of ordering at the counter. Ambiance - Restaurant has great lighting, lots of large windows so very bright, and airy feel. Good amount of seating and the option to eat in or take out. I can tell it's a popular local spot we came around 1 pm on Thursday and it was packed! Highly recommend for breakfast or lunch! Update- Went back multiple times over the course of my vacation. The arroz con leche and flan are amazing! They also have dinner, wine and live music nights. Can't recommend Kasalta enough if you're in San Juan PR it's a must try.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Based on all of the reviews I am hoping for an amazing meal. We stopped off on the way to the airport to have a quick bite. It had long lines, and was just so so for food. It is a large cafeteria style restaurant with tables that didnt seem to be too clean and the food was a little basic and boring
google avatar

Mauricio A.

Yelp
Good bakery in a great location. We ended up here to get dessert after leaving another local restaurant in the area. Got in and checked out all the different types of dessert they offered. We wanted to get it to go so decided on a Chocolate chip cheesecake (which was good, creamy, good flavor), crème brulee (Phenomenal, sweet, custardy, just great) and a chocolate cake that was just dry, lacked something, so we didn't finish it. But great visit overall, nothing to really complain about. Service was really good as well, and for it being 8pm that bakery was pretty packed. Seems like this is the local spot to meet up after work and have team meetings at.
google avatar

Gilberto H.

Yelp
Food was delicious and filling, service was extremely helpful. The table seating was a little crowded.
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Great restaurant! They have a counter to order sandwiches and a larger menu for dine-in with soups, seafood, pasta, etc. They also have many types of dessert on display to order. Service was wonderful.
google avatar

L H.

Yelp
Food is spectacular! We enjoyed several meals here while on vacation. The breakfast sandwiches are huge, big enough for 2 to share and delicious. Dinner plates are also great. The beans or habichuelas are to die for. Couldn't get enough of the quesitos. Brought a few home with us. Highly recommend Kasalta. Can't wait for our next trip!
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
I went to Kasalta for both breakfast and dinner and it's definitely an Ocean Park institution. Although the Mallorca was not my favorite - the lemon flavor they add did not go well with the ham and cheese in my opinion - my fried chicken dinner and eggs breakfast were very food. Dinner was fun - having the atmosphere of a friend's dinner party with the bakery all set up like a normal restaurant. They give ample portions so come hungry.
google avatar

Diego T.

Yelp
Always a fav for many years. Kasalta takes me back to Spain. My fav whenever in SJU
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Lines can be fairly long but if you get there at the right time it's great! The food is flavorful and decently priced compared to other places in the neighborhood.

Ana S.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely delicious. I've been here a few times only because the food never disappoints. However, the customer service is horrible. The negative attitudes from some of the cashiers/servers are disappointing. They definitely lack good customer service skills. Very unfortunate for such a lovely and busy bakery.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
When visiting San Juan, Kasalta is a must see and visit! I was told I should stop in as they were well known for their coffee and fresh pastries. I was not disappointed. One visit we went in for a quick lunch and had a variety of meat empanadas, pastries, and sandwiches. Everything was great but the empanadas were THE best I had in a very long time, I got them every time we stopped in! Before heading to the airport, for an early flight we decided to grab breakfast and it didn't disappoint. They only serve hot coffee with milk (no dairy free) and it's delicious, pancakes are large are filling, oatmeal is yummy. The lines are typically long but they move quickly and very helpful staff. We visited this restaurant on 3 different occasions during our week stay in PR. Fun fact, President Obama also made a visit here and there are photos of him on the wall. I will def be back next time I'm in PR and getting more empanadas!
google avatar

A D.

Yelp
Got cheese flan and cheesecake to go it doesn't taste the freshest.. service was okay.. big area to park and eat at. Cheesecake tasted like the refrigerator if you know what I mean. Flan was not that good. Great vibe inside probably a better restaurant the bakery.
google avatar

Vineela S.

Yelp
Kasalta is a great place to go for a sweet treat or a brunch meal. Our Airbnb was nearby and we decided to stop here after hearing some buzz and seeing that Obama stopped here on his PR trip. Right when you walk in, there are chocolates and bakery items displayed within glass. Even though this is a fairly small location, it feels much more open and bright since there are a lot of windows to bring in natural light. We ordered a quesito, pistachio cheesecake, and a couple drinks and really enjoyed it all!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing baked goods, soup, coffee. And it's really bustling and lively in here!! Great stop! Be ready to eat! Excellent service!
google avatar

Dawnne L.

Yelp
I've been to Kasalta many times since initially discovering it last winter. I've had many sandwiches. They're all delicious. I get way too much trouble in the bakery. I try to limit myself to once a week.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Can really only rate on desserts, we did takeout (chocolate covered strawberry and fruit tart). Went on a Sunday night, looked decently busy People were eating desserts and also dinner. The food looked good, and the desserts we bought were a great treat! This was right down the street from our hotel, so it was perfect!
google avatar

Odette E.

Yelp
When in the San Juan area, we got to try this spot. Food will never disappoint you. Of the many things we ordered were the Caldo Gallego (Spanish soup - super good - a meal on its own); Jamon Serrano Sandwich (we customized it a little bit from the regular ingredients - still ended up to be delicious). From the bakery items we ordered quite a few items including Flan (vanilla custard - king of), palmeritas, and so many others. It is an adventure going here and just try the many options available. Go with a group, other and share. You will not be disappointed. Can't wait to return to PR and go back again to this place.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
This is a great place to stop for some cafe con leche and a pastry. We actually stopped here for lunch and ordered the grilled grouper along with a side salad. My friends ordered the salmon with tostones along with rice and beans. All I know is, my grouper had so much flavor with all that juicy goodness of roasted garlic !! I also tried a screwball which is peanut butter whiskey on the rocks. YUM!! The staff were accommodating and the service was excellent. The ambiance is casual. I need to come back here for dessert before we leave so definitely check this place out!
google avatar

Monica Y.

Yelp
This place is so good!! They have the best pastries. It's very homey and welcoming. The customer service is great. I've been to Puerto Rico twice and both times have stopped by and brought pastries to fly home with

Cinthia C.

Yelp
We had a very disappointing experience due to the extremely slow service. We arrived around 7:30 PM and waited over an hour for our food without any updates on its status. Meanwhile, other tables around us, who were seated much later, were already receiving their appetizers. The sangria was good, but I ordered a second one without almonds and a glass of water, which took over 25 minutes. It became clear that the server forgot my order when others who arrived after I submitted my order started getting their drinks. I inquired about it, and the server said she would check, only to eventually bring me the drink with almonds--the very thing I asked to be excluded. We waited until 8:50 PM, still with no food and no communication from the server about our order. I understand if it was a busy night and food was delayed, but the lack of updates and attention to our table was unacceptable. Ultimately, we decided to leave, so I can't speak to the quality of the food. Poor service like this makes it hard to consider returning, even with good sangria.

Yelp
This was the best place for inexpensive treats and sandwiches in San Juan! We stayed near Kasalta and happened to stop in there for lunch on our first day in Puerto Rico. It was so good that we ate there for one meal almost every single day after that for the rest of our trip! Needless to say, everything was delicious :-) The ambiance of Kasalta is very bustling, with many lines of people ordering and waiting, but everything moves rather quickly, so don't let that scare you away. The pastries/sandwiches are relatively inexpensive, and the portions are LARGE! My friend and I could split one sandwich and be full at the end (well, also we were saving some room for desserts though, of course). Because of the large portion sizes, we'd just split a different sandwich every visit, so we got to try a lot! Our favorite sandwiches were: Empanada Gallega de Pollo - I would compare this most closely to a chicken salad sandwich. But this isn't your momma's chicken salad! -Verdict: This was my favorite! Very chunky bits of chicken and super flavorful, with minimal breadiness due to the sandwich's pressed nature. Medianoche - A pressed, sweet bread sandwich filled with pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mayonnaise and mustard. -Verdict: Delish! The sweet bread and pickles help balance out the meatiness of this. Cuban - I'm sure many know what a Cuban sandwich is. Kasalta's is pretty similar to their Medianoche, but without the sweet flavor to the bread (using Cubano bread instead). But that did change the flavor quite a bit! -Verdict: As I said, it has similarities to the Medianoche, but aside from the lesser amount of sweetness, the bread also gives a different mouth-feel. While both sandwiches are pressed, the Medianoche bread is a little more "soft" than the Cuban's. So it's just what you are feeling like that day! We also tried a bakery item or two each time we stopped in (We might have gained ten pounds each, but it was worth it!) Our favorite bakery treats were: -Tarte de Fresas - A delicious strawberry tart that came in a cute little hardened chocolate shell. -Tirathe Strawberry Biszcocho - A super moist chocolate cake with a strawberry topping. -Tiramisu - I don't think I need to describe this one, but I'll just say, it's one of my favorite things to order ANY place I go, and this one did not disappoint! Coffee - They also make really delicious coffee drinks. Whether you like it plain/black or floofy with flavored syrup and a cookie on top (that was me) they have you covered. While these were our absolute favorite bakery items, just about everything we tried was great. And as I already mentioned, very inexpensive - each item was about $2 (and totally worth it!) Overall, I definitely recommend popping in here if you're in the area. Grab a quick bite, bakery treat, or coffee - you won't regret it!

Yelp
Kasalta has a beautiful array of pastries, desserts and sandwiches, among other things. I just don't think any of the pastries/desserts are very good. I must be ordering the wrong thing. I'll have to come back and try the Mallorca. I love this neighborhood and I had high hopes that Kasalta would be up to par. But it's just so so.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful bakery with tons of options for desserts. Customer service was not good however, sadly the employees lack that friendly nature that makes you want to come back. The coffee was excellent as well, this place was recommended by a local. We spent $30 for two plates of omelets, coffee and orange juice, a bit pricey but when you're in a tourist area it's expected.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was very tasty had the Mallorca and oatmeal. The freshly squeezed orange juice was good as well. Would definitely return

Yelp
Pastries are made poorly. Quesito are tasteless , coffee seemed old or not brewed well. Whole place is a skeleton of what it was. Apparently still a local hang out. Not recommended.
