Kasbah du Toubkal, Imlil, Morocco - Explore & Book

"Question: how is it possible to take off from a London airport and within 6 hours be looking out at a mountain landscape of Tibetan grandeur and isolation? Answer: go to Morocco. More precisely, go to the unique hilltop kasbah-fort set at the base of Mt. Toubkal in the high Atlas, an epic journey that takes in plane, bus, taxi and a short walk. It may take just half a day but it will transport you to a different world.Sitting on the carpeted rooftop terrace in your loaned leather ‘babouches’ (slippers) and hooded woollen ‘djelaba’ (cloak), nodding wordlessly at the smiling Berber men who bring mint tea and freshly-picked nuts, staring up at snow-dusted peaks and down on stone-coloured villages, a wave of emotions inevitably washes over you: excitement at the discoveries ahead, tranquil disconnection from the stress behind, and awe at the majesty of it all. It may not be Tibet, but, as Martin Scorsese discovered when he filmed part of his movie Kundun here, it comes pretty close. Highs A magnificent setting on a remote hilltop amongst north Africa’s highest mountains; from the panoramic roof terrace you look down on 3 valleys fringed with green orchards and earth-coloured hamletsAn ideal base for hikes of all levels in the High Atlas, from a fully inclusive, flexible and tailor-made gentle 5-night package to the 2-day ascent of Toubkal itselfWe applaud the cultural sensitivity with which it's run - it employs locals, funds the Village Association and has won a Green Globe for sustainable tourismIt offers a variety of accommodation options, from ensuite rooms to a self-contained house for 6, perfect for a familyHikers have exclusive access to their Azzaden Trekking Lodge, reached by a half- or full day's hike from the kasbah - the comfiest mountain refuge imaginable, with excellent beds and ensuite bathrooms Lows You have to walk the last 15 minutes (or get on a mule), but hopefully this will attract rather than deter youBe aware that the Dar Imlil rooms are situated in the village of Imlil, 15 minutes below the main kasbahPrices are distinctly European (compared with other local spots) but you do get some of the best rooftop views in north Africa, and a percentage of profits goes to local projectsIt's not licensed, so if you need a post-trek beer, you'll need to bring it with you from Marrakech" - Michael Cullen

Kasbah du Toubkal | Best places to stay in Marrakech

"Located 60km from Marrakech at the foot of Mount Toubkhal, this atmospheric boutique hotel is an ideal spot to relax after a summit hike. Sitting on a rocky outcrop some 1,800m above sea level, rooms boast spectacular views of surrounding snow-capped mountains. It’s the result of a partnership between the Berber community and a British adventurer who bought, restored and opened the kasbah as a hotel in 1995. The property is staffed entirely by villagers. The property has a variety of accommodation levels to suit most budgets. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cuisine is Berber-Moroccan, and there is a vegetarian menu. They can also provide a picnic lunch for mountain trekking. Even if you’re not coming to climb Mount Toubkal, the kasbah is a good choice for relaxing in mountain serenity, with outstanding trekking all around. " - Mandy Sinclair

This is no ordinary place! It’s EXTRA-ordinary!!||Our family’s stay at the Kasbah de Toubkal in July 2025 was amazing. From the moment our transport arrived to pick us up in Essaouira, we knew we were in good hands. Rachid our driver, (arranged by the Kasbah) was wonderful! We’d had some hairy/scary driving experiences with taxis over the previous few days in Morocco so we were delighted with his safe driving and he was very attentive to our needs regarding comfort, toilet breaks, air con, water etc. Once we arrived in the village of Imlil and began the short uphill walk (with our luggage carried by mule — a first for us!), we knew we were in for something special. The Kasbah doesn’t market itself as a traditional hotel, and that’s exactly what makes it so unique. It’s a place rooted in authentic Berber culture and the hospitality shown to us was exceptional.||The setting is breathtaking — perched high in the Atlas Mountains, with amazing panoramic views. The pool, framed by the rugged peaks offered the most stunning views we’ve ever encountered. It was so peaceful and relaxing, a fabulous place to disconnect and slow down. ||When searching for our accommodation in the Atlas Mountains, we were really drawn to the Kasbah due to it's commitment to the local community.|The owners, through their partnership with the Moroccan NGO 'Education for All', created a model of sustainable tourism that gives back. Knowing that our stay contributed to educational opportunities (a 5% levy added to our bill) for local girls made the experience even more meaningful, especially as we have two daughters. The Kasbah is also involved in funding other services and amenities to the local Community (including rubbish collection). The staff are from local villages, and all seem so happy to work there, making us feel very welcome.||The rooms were simple yet comfortable, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Meals were traditional Moroccan dishes, our servers were very attentive and the food was very tasty and plentiful.|We took a free guided walk with Mohammed, a lovely experience. We also availed of the on-site Hammam which was a memorable cultural experience for us!|If you’re looking for a place that offers more than just a beautiful view — this is it! We left with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the people and culture of this remarkable region.|Thank you to all the staff who made our trip to the Kasbah so amazing!

Excellent. Kind staff. Beautiful. Heated floors. Good food. B highly recommended for families and those who enjoy the beauty of the mountains. They are well recovered from the earthquake and fully open. Just a beautiful retreat from the world.

Amazing views. Very comfortable rooms. Rooftop relaxation with the best view. The staff is so kind and will go out of their way to make you stay just perfect. Food is amazing. Ask for Mohammed to be your tour guide up the mountains, either by foot or by mule! He even set up lunch with a Berber family!

We had a fantastic stay at the Kasbah. The location is breathtaking, with amazing views of snow topped mountains all around. We hiked into the next valley and stayed in their Trekking Lodge (basic but perfectly comfortable, we had a en-suite room). This was an incredible experience - the mountains are so peaceful. We walked with a guide and had a delicious picnic on the mountainside. The walk (including a break for lunch) was around 5 hours. We walked back, via a different route, the following day. ||The Berber hospitality in the Kasbah was great - the food was really delicious Moroccan food. My favourite was the Msemen (Moroccan pancakes) for breakfast with Amlou (almond butter). ||Would thoroughly recommend staying here if you’re interested in hiking in the Atlas Mountains and would like to stay somewhere comfortable (and beautiful).

The kasbah is an immensely satisfying place in which to enjoy the mountains. After suffering bad damage in the 2023 earthquake it has been speedily repaired and is fully back in operation with lovely new premises at which you are welcomed on arrival. ||It is run by a friendly bunch of people including Omar (known as Maurice) a kindly elder who has been there since it opened in 1995. ||If you arrive from Asni or Marrakech you have to get out of transport about 15 minutes below the kasbah at a village office from where a mule can be arranged to take your luggage. We went with backpacks and a guide helped us not to get lost on the first arrival. ||We were the only guests staying the second weekend in July because it was low season for Europeans seeking warmth. We were here for a few days after a business conference in Marrakech. We had a lot of attention and everything was thoroughly hospitable. Breakfast and evening meals were of high quality and quantity which was great because we were doing long treks. ||Mohamed the guide provided to us knew every square centimetre of the terrain and took us on some extensive mountain and valley walks early in the day to avoid the heat. Arranged by the kasbah and worth every dirham. ||The kasbah should be thought of as a home to stay in rather than a fancy hotel. It includes a lovely little infinity pool to cool down though it never really gets too hot here. There is a wonderful traditional hamam for relaxation and a body scrub which was perfect coming off the mountains. ||The people are committed to working well with the environment. Plastic water bottles are a hate of theirs as well as mine and plentiful mountain water and jugs are provided. This is a place where the sound of trickling streams is enjoyed rather than aircon units. ||The new (3/25) infinity swimming pool is a highlight of the tower area and a short dip there in the sunshine was a highlight of each day. ||The owners support the local community with a levy of 5% of your bills to community projects including girls’ secondary education. The kasbah accordingly holds a high place in the affections of the local people. ||I know I shall return one day.

Beautiful location only accessible on foot with luggage hauled up by mule. We had a couple of nights there, in a tower bedroom. The room was comfortable but the bathroom was small and cramped. Great to be able to use the Hammam. An excellent base for hiking in the High Atlas Mountains. Meals were fine but served on low tables which was awkward. Overall very authentic and recommeded

This place needs to be avoided at all costs. Morocco s seem to be comfortable charging European prices for below std hospitality. This place is perfect example of a bad bread and breakfast. Rooms are below basic, washrooms have no exhaust, linen is bad. The hotel is 20 mins trek from village and a mule is given to pick ur luggage l. We arrived late at night and didn’t ask for luggage pickup. The hotel insisted we need to come up the moment we parked our car or they won’t bring up our luggage

Terrible ! Terrible ! Terrible The rooms are super bad; dirty linen and very rough sheets. 300 Euros for what would be 50 Euros in village below. You have to trek 20 mins to reach the hotel and they send mules to pick ur luggage. We arrived at 10 pm and the mule owner didn’t let us have dinner at restaurant in village. He insisted if we don’t go with him at same time he would leave us alone. Important point to note is the hotel asked us to give them a call when we reach; we never called the hotel. Since the mule owner was there he wanted to just push and close the day Do urself s favor and live in a cheap riad down or do a day trip from Marakkesh
