13 Worthy Westmount Restaurants for Takeout | Eater Montreal

"Tucked away upstairs on Greene Avenue is this Japanese gem: It’s commonly looked to for its sushi and sashimi, with curious eyes quickly being drawn to their Titanic platter. However, Kashima does just as much in terms of curry, bento boxes, tempura, and donburi bowls. A good bet, day or night." - JP Karwacki

This sushi place is like, the little bistro on the way home that you could expect some delightful comfort food. Over the years, there’s consistency in freshness of fish and quality of cut. It is not a fancy sushi place that makes “fusion” plates, more on the simple but having good standard in all little things side. There are hot dishes on the menu too (Udon, skewers). I’ve only ordered the sashimi or sushi box for take out.

We ordered delivery from the restaurant directly. It arrived later than the max delivery time, and my elderly grandmother did not enjoy her seafood delux tempura: 1) presentation was just dumped into a box vs laid out like previous orders 2 years ago. 2) too much tempura 3) only 2/5 types of fish was good and not hot 4) hard to cut veggies, very soggy. Had to reheat too. Sushi was fine, albeit smaller portions that what I’m used to getting elsewhere for same price. Was average taste. Soya sauce provided wasn’t great. And the sauce for the fish was also too salty. Free edamame and extra rice was nice. We will look for tastier fish options next time.

Ordered for a delivery early enough to make sure it arrives on time and it did, and guess what. For any sushi lover that loves quality fish and well seasoned, perfectly cooked rice this is it. We swallowed everything so quickly no pictures taken we will make sure we do next time! Thank you. Really nice place

I’m updating my original review below from 7 years ago to provide more info. Kashima has been an amazing restaurant in the community for years. Every time I have sushi there I’m amazed by how consistent both the quality and service is. The restaurant is currently now only doing take out /delivery. I used their online ordering form and it was incredible, order was received and taken care of right away and I was greeted with the same warmth and hospitality as always when I went to pick up the meal. The tempura was crispy and wonderful (which is amazing for take out) and the sushi was absolutely wonderful - as always. The Rainbow roll there is the best. Pictures included here are of the Rainbow and Kamakazi II The portions are very generous and high quality. In addition to the exceptional food, they also pay attention to every little detail down to nice quality chop sticks, fresh wasabi, plenty of soy sauce and ginger. If you want to be delighted, Kashima is the place to order from. — Original review - 7 years ago: I've been eating at this restaurant for years. Their quality of ingredients is excellent and their fish is very fresh. They have really good combinations for sushi, imaginative and tasty. The servers and staff are largely Japanese and don't necessarily speak English very well, but this adds to the charm, they are always very warm and inviting. They are usually packed at lunch so reservations are recommended. It can be a bit noisy, yet it's a very popular place for business lunches. Service is not super fast, but it is still very good, so plan your time accordingly. In the evening the restaurant is less busy. They also serve other traditional Japanese meals / bento - the chicken Katsu is good, as with most everything else I've tried. I love their fried tofu. Don't be surprised if they bring you some sort of complimentary appetizer or dessert, it doesn't happen every time, but that's just the kind of awesome people they are.

I went back yesterday and I have to give them 5* instead of 4*. The sashimis always taste fresh. It’s my place to go when I want eat great sushi in a nice quiet restaurant, you know just to relax. The place is very clean and staff always nice and polite.

The food is excellent. Sashimi is generously cut. Everything is very fresh. Try the Montreal roll for a real treat. Lunch specials are well proportioned for the price. The Titanic for 2 was delightful. Service can be a bit uneven but still worthy of a visit. I look forward to going back.

Kashima is our go-to sushi place because it is around the block from where we live, and we are very happy about this fact. We have been getting Kashima sushi takeout at least twice a month for the past year and a half since moving here, and it is consistently really good. The fish is high quality and delicious and the nigiri and maki are well prepared every single time. We have tried various rolls and they're all good, and interestingly the cooked rolls are quite tasty as well (at most places we wouldn't order cooked sushi but often take the sakura roll or tiger eye which make a nice complement to the rest of the meal - they're really gingery and good). Also love their miso soup and wakame salad. Yep, basically we have never had a negative experience from Kashima and highly recommend it as a solid place that will not disappoint in Westmount.

I came here with a group for a birthday. Service was slow, and they had run out of chicken. The waitress would fill up some of our cups of water but kept forgetting my friend, who sat on my left. They also should have brought out all the main dishes at the same time but didn't so most of us awkwardly waiting for a while until the rest of our group got their dishes in order to start eating. Other than that, I found my sushi to be good.

Yelp
This restaurant is a real hidden gem in Montreal! The staff members are Japanese, and the food is fresh and authentic. I highly recommend Kashima. I live nearby and I've ordered for pick-up twice already. The first time, I ordered their "Bento Express" using Skipthedishes. I chose miso soup, seaweed salad, katsu oysters (3 pieces), chef's choice sashimi (5 pieces), chef's choice maki (5 pieces). The second time, I called directly and ordered their lunch menu's "Sushi & Sashimi Combo": miso soup, 4 pieces of nigiri, 5 pieces of maki, and 9 pieces of sashimi. Both orders were 17.95$+ taxes. Both times, I was greeted courteously and warmly. The meals were prepared swiftly, and I did not need to wait when I arrived even though I ordered only 15 minutes ahead of time. The prices might be higher than other sushi joints; however, given the location (on Greene Ave, in Westmount) and the authenticity, I think it's well worth it! Overall, you can't go wrong with Kashima. Everyone's opinion is highly subjective but I completely disagree with the reviewers who left only 1 star.

Yelp
Got a few takeout orders from this place. They are prompt and prices are decent (a bit pricey but so is all sushi nowadays). They have a extensive menu and seem to be pretty traditional Japanese. Their salads are pretty good (though the sashimi salad was disappointing, with barely any sashimi at all). The miso soup was also quite nice, with soft tofu in it. The tempura was a bit disappointing, with most pieces ok, and some interesting veggies like asparagus included, but the broccoli being basically inedible as there was a huge wad of uncooked stodgy batter in the broccoli floret. The sashimi is very good, nice and fresh and thickly sliced, and it's a good assortment. The sashimi order comes with the side salad (pretty meh but it's included) and also the miso soup and rice. The sushi rolls have a bit too much rice for my taste but they're well made. The handrolls were very good too. The sea urchin gunkan was what I was anticipating the most but sadly they did not taste fresh and I felt very nauseous afterwards which ruined my evening. I will stick to the sashimi from now on. It's too bad the uni was no good, as there arent that many restaurants here that even have uni.

Yelp
Good food. The pick up service was very good. The food was real good. Would definitely come try it after COVID-19

Yelp
I had the opportunity to lunch at Kashima last week during the first snow of the winter in Montreal. It's lovely to duck up the stairs out of the very Westmount vibes on Greene Avenue and into the calm of this simple, lovely second floor restaurant. Service is calm, prompt and professional and perfectly in keeping with the whole vibe. Menu is affordable and appealing. My friend loves the maki rolls here so he dug into those with delight, and I took a chance on the vegetarian udon soup. I was not disappointed! The soup was totally delicious, savoury broth, lovely chewy noodles, just great.

Yelp
I always wanted to try this place as it is in the lovely fancy area of Greene avenue . Was a big disappointment!!! Overpriced sushi that is below average quality. We asked for a chef special sushi for 2 , was a horrible choices in every way . Fish didn't taste fresh at all , shrimp tasted raw and not marinated enough . Damage was 100$ , didn't worth at all , never again .

Yelp
In these covid times, we're always on the lookout for restos who do carry-out/delivery well. Kashima packages the food very well, sealing and even labeling (labels!! Can you imagine??) all liquids/sauces. We were regular patrons of this restaurant (for inside dining when that was a thing) and have not noticed any drop in quality. Top notch attention to detail and care with making sure your food arrives without any confusion, issues or 'spillage' (the destroyer of any good take-out experience). Delicious as always.

Yelp
Service is fast. Got take out but you can dine in as well. The rolls were decent in terms of flavour but were too big to eat in one bite. Falls apart when you try to eat it in two bites.

Yelp
This is the best reasonably priced Japanese restaurant downtown. The lunch menu is great; bento box includes soup and salad. I'm not sure how long ago, but their dinner prices used to be $5 to $6 more than their lunch prices. Well not anymore; their dinner prices are now the same as their lunch prices but you don't get the soup and salad included. If you do go, make sure you get Tempura Banana (fried banana) for desert. It's divine.

Yelp
Great place, their bento boxes are super good. I like to go there for business meetings too as it is never too loud, you can hear very well what the people with you are saying. Food is good and service also very good

Yelp
I am a Montreal native and I've had sushi at most sushi restaurants in the city, but no restaurant has been so consistently good and reasonable priced as Kashima. Kashima has changed menus and owners several times these past few years, and needless to say, the prices have also gone up. Despite this, it is still among the tastiest and freshest sushi in town. I am updating my previous review and here are some comments on the sushi I had last night. Spicy tuna - one of the best rolls - fresh, perfectly balanced, and well proportioned so that you can actually eat it with the chop stick and it doesn't come part. The tuna melts in your mouth and there is just enough mayo to make it spicy. Westmount with salmon & tuna - a solid roll, a bit on the large side but thin enough so you don't make a mess while eating it. Flavourful - its deep fried edges gives it a pleasant texture without being too oily. Kamikaze 3 - it was just 'ok' - I remember when under a previous owner I used to have to specially request extra crispy tempura flakes because they did not put enough - those days are long gone. Now, the roll is overpacked with them, making it way too large. Are the extra flakes being used to justify the higher prices - and being put in the place of more fish? Montreal - This roll substitutes rice with tempura flakes - a less tasty version of the Kamikaze in my opinion. Again, way too much tempura - not sure what purpose it serves. I also didn't like that I had to use my hands to eat it and that it constantly came apart in the process. I was happy overall, but until those speciality rolls become better proportioned in size, I'm going to stick to the smaller, simpler, and more traditional rolls.

Yelp
we had a nice dinner at Kashima this weekend. The sushi was fresh, tasty and plentiful. there are a number of interesting rolls i'd never tried before, as well as sushi pizza!? pretty neat. the meal was great although the service was really slow. they seemed to forget about us after our food was brought out. standouts were the softshell crab roll, spicy tuna roll and the westmount roll.

Yelp
Descent sized portions! The service is mediocre, and the food is a bit underwhelming. The staff was nice, but seemed a bit lost (or just very impersonal). This is a good place to check out, however, I will, personally, not go back as there are substantially better places out there, even though this is closer.

Yelp
I've been there a few times over the years as it is located around the corner where I used to live. The sushi was always very good. They also have very affordable and tasty lunch specials.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to eat sushi in town. Here, you get a great sushi for a reasonable price

Yelp
I decided to try a new sushi place tonight (Monday night) instead of my usual spots. Boy oh boy am I happy I did! We were a party of 5 and the place was very quiet (only 3 other parties) - we ordered 70 sushi rolls and a few sashimi, and it was the perfect amount. Every single one was *really* enjoyed by each one of us - with the Hawaiian roll being the crowd favourite. It was out of this world! Pineapple is unexpected but super delicious! I will definitely be back! And on the plus side, parking is free in Westmount on Mon-Wed after 6pm (not like elsewhere downtown)! Fantastic resto. Five stars!

Yelp
The food is great! Japanese waitresses are always a plus, the only negative point was that the restaurant lacked ambiance music. Totally recommended! Grab a few dishes and share them! Tempura + soup + beef teriyaki = delightful!

Sina H.

Yelp
We had a good experience. The food was good and the service was prompt. This is one of the better sushi places in Montreal.

Diego G.

Yelp
Great quiet atmosphere, decoration, and music suitable for a family or couples. The menu was varied and the quality of the food was very good at a fair price. Overall a great find that exceeded our expectations.

Eric L.

Yelp
I've been going for a few years now and have never been disappointed. Sushi is extremely fresh and the portions for the maki is generous. Also great value for lunch. Definitely my go to sushi place when I don't want to go to the all you can eat Japanese restaurants.

Marc C.

Yelp
Really like this restaurant! Good prices for the quality of sushi you get : fresh, tasty, descent sizes. Staff is pretty friendly. Have to go back to try their teriyaki!
