"In the Before Times, my colleague Jim Aley would often go to Katagiri, the Japanese grocery store a few blocks from the office, and return with bags and bags of fruit gummies. He used to launch them across the desks at whoever wanted any. I miss that."

Stores like that are essential! Beautiful in its simplicity. It’s like a teleport to another country. Ready to eat food if affordable, delicious and fresh. They have spices, snacks, frozen ramen, great variety of fresh noodles, fish sausages, sweets, fresh vegetables and meat, tea drinks. They even have home goods there! Prices are reasonable. Love this little baby Japanese oasis. I’ll be back for sure 👍

Google
This grocery store has amazingly perfect Japanese foods, snacks and beers. It’s a very convenient place to buy all your favorite Japanese stuff in the city. You can also have a bowl of ramen or buy a bento here! Love this place!

Google
I love this store so much, fresh food and warm and kind hearted employees!!! They have limited nihon snacks during holidays. Next year is the year of snakes. I saw these snake mochi 小蛇蛇麻薯when I passed by today 🥰

Google
Small store, but they have so many things to choose from. They have freshly made Ramen, sushi, rice bowls… Great little place!

Google
Open since 1907 this wonderful tiny Japanese grocery is still serving the community with fresh prepared sushi, sashimi and Ramen (for takeaway) as well as all of your favorite or unknown Japanese staples and treats. Always a wonderful experience, always the highest quality fresh fish.

Google
Katagiri Japanese Grocery in Midtown NYC is a hidden gem for authentic Japanese ingredients and fresh seafood. Established in 1907, it’s the oldest Japanese grocery store in the U.S., offering a fantastic selection of imported goods, from premium rice and miso to specialty snacks and sake. The store is compact but well-stocked, making it easy to find everything needed for Japanese cooking. The fresh sushi-grade fish is a standout, and the bento boxes are a great grab-and-go option. While prices can be a bit high, the quality and authenticity make it worth it.

Alex D.

Google
The longest-running Japanese grocery store, established in 1907, is located in a somewhat unlikely spot on 59th Street between 2nd and 1st Avenue. This store offers a wide variety of food, including matcha-flavored KitKats, an assortment of onigiri rice balls, and bento boxes for those on the go. They also have razor-thin slices of shabu-shabu beef and traditional kabayaki grilled eel frozen. The sushi and sashimi are always fresh and of high quality. It’s impressive how they manage to fit so much food into such a modest storefront while maintaining a clear and relaxed atmosphere. Extra points go to the store staff, who are knowledgeable about everything they sell and always ready to help.

Google
I absolutely love Katagiri! If you're in the area, especially during lunch time, swing by for their packaged lunch boxes and meals that are prepared the same day. Very very fresh! In addition, if you want to pick up some Japanese snacks and groceries, then Katagiri will not disappoint.

Yelp
Great customer service. There fish is constantly fresh. They have one of the best desserts in the neighbourhood. The customers that shop there can be a bit aggressive but that is ok.
google avatar

Meira S.

Yelp
I went in here to kill some time and see if there was anything nice to pick up that was reminiscent of my trip to Japan. I was not disappointed. There were many delicious looking ready made foods, and some nice snacks too. I think this store had more of a variety of ready made foods that other stores I've been to locally, which I liked. They even offered me chopsticks when I bought my ready made food. Some of the snacks had higher prices than I might have liked, so that's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars.
google avatar

Phuong D.

Yelp
This is a small Japanese grocery store with a popular pre-made food section. Someone told me previously that they have discount on hot food if you come after 7pm but that turned out to be false. The prices for hot food and sushi is pretty good so I was OK with paying full prices. The rest of the store has various Japanese groceries, veggies, snacks, and seafood. Prices are a bit pricy but it's typical for imported Japanese items.
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
Japanese store size of a deli. It's a tight store but they have good priced onigiri and other to go foods/ snacks. They have kind of the main necessities but not much beyond that.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Not sure if I just got it fresh, but the wrapping was hard to disassemble. The rice really stuck to the wrapping when I was trying to pull the wrapper out. Otherwise, solid salmon onigiri. Wanted more salmon, but for the price as a quick snack, not bad.

Yelp
Great spot to pick up some cheap japanese eats! Choose from a wide selection of authentic japanese snacks and ready to go food. They've got rice bowls for 11-12ish bucks and onigiri for 2-3 dollars that apparently they have a chef prepare daily. While obviously the onigiri is not mind-blowing, it's authentic and a nice little snack for you to enjoy on your way home from work or walk to where you're going next. I highly recommend getting one of the sodas and 2 onigiri for a meal costing you less than 10 bucks. Pro tip: get some snacks and go to the waterfall park just a short walk away to catch a great view while eating and getting some time for yourself. Also a cute first date idea, and cheap! We def need more japanese grocery stores here in NYC and I'm glad to have this one around and do it justice. There's also ready to go sushi as well.

Yelp
Very convenient place to stop by for food, snacks, small groceries. Being in the area surrounded by offices makes this place very popular for lunch, from sushi, to don, to ramen. Then after work, for some basic meats, fish, fruits, and Asian vegetables, for hotpot, sushi, and whatnot for dinner at night. Just don't expect anything at volume as it is a fairly small space.

Yelp
This is a review on just the miso pork Ramen from the Brooklyn Ramen storefront within the grocery store. Brooklyn Ramen pork, miso Ramen, 2/5 stars. Pork: tenderness = medium Noodles chewy and clumped together. Broth: very thin, but still flavorful. Toppings: I can literally taste the "fresh out of can" flavor of the corn, which is really not appealing to me. The remainder of the toppings included mild to moderate amounts of green onions and a piece of menma. Overall, edible but not the most tastiest and is not worth $13.

Yelp
Like the Katagiri on 41st Street near Grand Central you will find excellent quality and very fresh sashimi fish (Osakana) for take-away sushi, bento boxes, chirashi, omakase, onigiri rice rolls, Ramen, all at very good prices. Consistently Fresh! Did I say "Fresh?" "Yes!" KATAJIRI 59th Street is much larger than the 41st Street location, it is also very organized, clean and well stocked. There's often a line of customers at lunch time which proves how highly regarded their business is, and proof in of its self of how popular and fresh the food is here. Plus you can enjoy the many treats, snacks, packaged goods from Japan available for purchase. There's good fresh produce and frozen items too. Katagiri is a wonderful convenient shop which brings happiness to their customers. Let's stay happy. Arigato!!! Thank you for reading.

Yelp
Food is clean a bit pricy but delicious. Cashiers are very hospitable the service is also fast. They have a lot of groceries also ice creams and mochi!

Yelp
Katagiri is my absolute favorite Japanese grocery store so far! Although the prices of their sashimi is higher than Dainobu, their customer service is much better and they're more welcoming. Katagiri sells a variety of sashimi such as Scottish salmon, bluefin medium fatty tuna, scallops (hotate), welks, and more all at affordable prices. They also sell American Wagyu, Japanese smoked sausages, and baby scallops which are perfect for hotpot. Many of their items are shipped from Japan. For example, sushi rice, condiments, seaweed, snacks, and etc. One of the most fabulous things about Katagiri is that they have a chef who makes their onigiri fresh daily. I absolutely love this place and only wish that I live closer so I can shop here more often.

Yelp
Okay, I'm a person who thrives off of novelty. Even outside of New York, I rarely liked something off a menu so much that I'd go back twice in a month to have it, much less twice in 2 days. Here we are, though. The shiso onigiri is so incredibly delicious that I feel like I could eat one every day without getting tired of it. They have a very nice selection of sushi and other prepared foods that looked reasonably priced. I also found several snacks and ingredients that were cheaper than on Amazon so there's that too. I avoided gatekeeping in the hopes of ushering in a shiso renaissance where everyone demands to have it added to everything, like they did with corn in 2023. Let's make 2024 the year of shiso. You saw it first here.

Yelp
This is apparently one of if not the oldest Japanese style convenience store in the city if I recall correctly which is pretty neat. They have a nice selection of goods though I would say that the drink selection is a lot better at the pretty close to here Dainobu (and for a bigger selection see Mi-ne/Yamadaya but those are much further away being in the village.) I have gotten a few things as take out here. I particularly like their roasted beef bowls which are very tender and very tasty along with their pretty good katsu and cheap and tasty onigiri (though I prefer Omusubi Gonbei but they are a specialty shop.) I have had their ramen also which was alright. Pretty good selection of snacks and treats though less then Dainobu with overall reasonable prices and nice people in front. I prefer Dainobu for a few things but there's a very good reason this place is usually very crowded.

Yelp
Mitsuwa lite is a grocery favorite. I hate having to reference the competition when reviewing. I almost never do, but in this case I do believe it can be flattering to reference a behemoth that is right across the Hudson River that generally is recognized as a leader in Japanese goods. This particular Karagiri's footprint is far less than that other place for sure but it does serve to provide all that I need without having to pay a toll to get back. What differentiates this Katagiri from the other one near Grand Central is a great assortment of fresh fish for sushi/sashimi. They are also packaged in smaller weighed increments so that you can attain more variety for your meal. Other items I'll find include ready made food, fresh veggies, hard to find snacks, shelf stable and fresh ramen, Japanese condiments, kitchenware, are all within your reach. Friendly and efficient checkout is also available to get you on your way quickly.

Yelp
I used to go there almost everyday when I worked in the area. Great affordable lunch spot with fresh/hot meals like noodles, curry, rice and salmon! Great Japanese snacks and they have fresh fish and meats in the back. Sometimes they have those SUPER delish pink strawberries shipped directly from Japan. Expensive? YUP. Tasty? You. Bet. One complaint is their use of plastic when you order meals to go. I always have to tell them " no, thank you."

Yelp
it's small store you can enjoy shopping there. This store is very Quiet. I found A matcha Whisk here. Infront Of Q32 Bus. 224 E 59th St, New York, NY 10022

Yelp
We stopped here at the behest of my wife for an obligatory snack run after a day out shopping. Wasnt quite sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised at selection and quality here! For lunch we got a salman bowl, pork katsu, and some chicken karage. My pork had an amazing amount of flavor and the sauce was savory, would have expected the same quality in a full on restaraunt. Another snack that were procured worthy of mention were some Takoyaki flavored puffs which were pretty close taste wise to actual takoyaki. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area, very affordable and tasty food!

Yelp
This is my go to grocery store. They have nice selections of noodles, fresh food as well. The staff are really efficient . The location is closed to the Queens bus stop and Roosevelt tram, very accessible. The place is clean and it doesn't smell even if they have poultry and fresh seafood items. They also have hot soup (highly recommended, which is freshly made).

Yelp
Delightful Japanese grocery store. Such a gem of produce, products, and fresh and to go packaged snacks and meals. The team is also such a gem, such kind-hearted and joyful people. Prices are reasonable and comparable to HMart/Morton Williams. It's a small market, but filled with so many treasures- fresh ready to eat sashimi, ramen, kimchi, seaweed, sauces and dressings, chips, thinly sliced meats Encouraging you all just to pop in and explore, you will surely be fascinated and enticed to try something new and yummy. For freshly prepared foods- try the chicken karage or chicken teriyaki bowls or Onigiri, sushi rice wrapped in seaweed and filled with fish or pickled veggies. Lmk what ya think! *pics are from the Katagiri on Lexington by Grand Central

Yelp
Really great Japanese grocery store with small sections for fresh groceries, packaged snacks/foods/beverages, household goods, frozen food, and other miscellaneous items. I like to come by here to stock up on the usual snacks and dry goods (instant ramen, boxed curry, miso soup packets). The prices are pretty reasonable and sometimes a little cheaper than Hmart. There's also a nice selection of prepared/hot asian food, and business definitely picks up around lunch time. I usually grab a spam and egg rice ball and some canned milk tea for lunch. The potato croquettes are also very crispy and good! Definitely stop by if you are in the area and craving a snack or a meal to go. Like most asian groceries these days, they provide a huge dispenser of hand sanitizer right by the door, which is nice for cleanliness.

Yelp
Excellent perfect gor the area , has a variety of good Japanese goodies . Enjoy everyone lucky to have one n the area.

Yelp
This place happens to be next to the Queensboro bridge. When I entered, the place here was cheaper than Ten Ichi Mart in Brooklyn but was slightly more expensive than the one near the Grand Central station. This place was smaller than the one on 42nd Street. When I entered, it wasn't too busy as it was afternoon. The ramen stall is next to the entrance. There wasn't an onigiri stall, but the items were limited. I saw that there was a sashimi stall in the back next to the freezers. The items here is quite limited. Would perfer the one at 42nd Street.

Yelp
A great grocery store with many Japanese items, popular, small but well-stocked. I got the eel rice bowl, jasmine tea, matcha kitkats and dango. I liked the selection and the prices were reasonable. Great selection and quality.
google avatar

Jon P.

Yelp
The oldest (and perhaps best) Japanese grocer in NY if not the entire US, their sashimi and meat selection is sized and packaged for a "take home" sushi night experience. Most of the fish is source from Osakana BK, their fresh seafood supply (a separate concession inside the store), and Osakana in turn sources mainly from Ocean Providence (yes, that's how they spelled provenance). Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and as of Dec 22' prices for salmon for example, are about double to triple what can be sourced for retail delivery albeit larger quantities. So would you rather pay $60-$80/lb from Katagiri (sashimi quality but with source undisclosed), or use one of the top tier purveyors for any of 4-6 varieties of jet fresh salmon (Bakkafrost / Faroe Island, NZ or Chinook ("King") salmon, salmon trout, ivory salmon, etc. at $20-$40/lb?
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Got their Japanese rice balls, which were decent. A little on the salty side but actually I liked it - made it flavorful! Tried their salmon, roe, and unagi ones, and I thought the salmon and roe ones were better. The filling and flavor were more evenly distributed, whereas the unagi one had a piece of unagi in the middle with fairly bland rice surrounding it. The only other complaint is they were difficult to open. The rice balls came apart a bit while unwrapping them.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Katagiri while I was in the area. It was fun to shop here because it's not very common to find Japanese grocery stores. The snacks they have are so appealing but I always find myself having a hard time choosing what to get because I don't know what's good. The snacks they sell here are editions that I can't find at other stores, so I love coming here! They are also not that expensive. They also sell warm food that is made fresh, such as ramen, sushi, and onigiris. Some of my favorite snacks to get are the wasabi flavored rice crackers. The workers are kind and polite. I can't wait to come here again to buy more Japanese snacks! I wish that they would open up a few branches in Queens.
google avatar

Yelp
Their fresh food is delicious, and their items are so reasonably priced. The staff are nice as well. They have a great selection of Japanese snacks and groceries!

Yelp
This place is tiny, but it does the trick. I'm glad to find a Japanese grocery store that is uptown, so that I don't have to travel all the way to Chinatown for some of the ingredients I look for. They stock many Asian essentials, including my favorite dry noodles for cooking. I decided to treat myself to the onigiri since I was curious and stopped in - they have little handwritten signs announcing when fresh onigiri is made, and when it is discarded daily. They also have a small food menu that includes ramen, bento boxes, and sushi! The prices seem expensive, although probably reasonable for Manhattan. FYI that they have an $8 minimum for credit card charges.
google avatar

Jaimee A.

Yelp
This is a really nice shop for Asian goodies. We haven't tried the sushi or the other prepared foods but they looked really good. They have a fully array of Japanese treats that we historically got from Amazon with a 3-4 week lead time for delivery. Their soy sauces, salad dressings and treats are really good. They also have a fully array of asian produce, meats and fish. During the NYC "Pause" we ordered from them quite a bit from Mercato (prices higher and it took almost two weeks to take delivery). We are glad that we can now visit this shop en route to Bloomingdales!

Yelp
Huge thank you for Katagiri for being so well stocked during the pandemic, for the always exceedingly polite staff and just the all-around pleasant shopping experience. The only store where employees and customers alike reliably always wear their masks properly. Favorites include packaged ramen and fresh noodles, seasonal vegetables, sauces, chips and Pocky, Japanese coffee and especially the fresh fish. The quality is exceptional and my finicky senior cat is excitedly eating her way through the sashimi selection.

Meghna S.

Yelp
Found this amazing Japanese grocery store at 59 th and 2nd. Love the range of products they store right from vegetables, snacks, sushis, sashimis, desserts, ready to eat meals, Japanese condiments and chocolates to name a few. I'm no expert when it comes to Japanese food but I really found this store having everything I was looking for. They are priced well too so it's really not heavy on your pocket. They also provide delivery services via mercato but I found that option a bit expensive. I rather visit the store and do my own pick.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been going to Katagiri since childhood. My 1st memory is going to the original store when my family was visiting NYC for the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing. We lived in Maryland at that time. My mother was Japanese and I spent many years growing up in Tokyo. Katagiri was the best source for many Japanese provisions. Although there are competitors (including, Dainobu and Sunrise Market), it remains one of the best sources for quality Japanese fresh foods and ingredients.

D M.

Yelp
They have pretty good lunch options if you're trying to get something quick and are in a rush. They have a full ramen bar, sushi options, rice bowls and a bunch of grocery options. The cashiers are also super nice and staff is overall friendly if you need help finding something.

Yelp
This is my fave local Japanese market. So many goodies here to try n enjoy!!! Great fresh items n wonderful snacks.

Yelp
Tiny store with a great selection of products and prepared food. They have a ramen bar, best ramen iv ever had, and everyone is polite and welcoming.

Yelp
The Gold customer service !!! I don't normally write reviews for grocery stores , But i felt i Must enter for this ! I was at the register after the store hour on Friday night , i felt bad holding them up, so i was rushing to pay ~ However , while the ladies was helping me to checkout for items , she found one item was expired . She was saying to me sorry and bowing to me and showing me the expiration date ~ and she asked me if it's ok for her to change and new one for me (not expired item ) , then she went look for a new one for me ~ I was so impressed and surprised because i never expected to experience this type of typical Japanese customer service in the outside of Japan . She was so honest , careful , and patient to customers although customer was holding her up after store hour !
google avatar

Rose N.

Yelp
Yes! I love their onigiri. I would not reccomend getting a lot of ready to eat food because they expire within days so keep that in mind They have a lot of snacks and packaged foods. Shrimp chips! Yum. Dried squid. Cookies and pocky. Their fresh baked goods that they get delivered are so good. I think a variety pack is $12? It's so worth it.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
This place saved me for my Asian food cravings during quarantine. They have a great selection of snacks, drink, and sushi grade fish.

Yelp
Am handicap....there is no place for me to eat...ramen..and other goods...I know is not a restaurant....is very hard for me....

Yelp
Small but mighty! I love this grocery store. Employees are friendly and helpful. There's a ramen spot inside!! (Brooklyn ramen). They have almost everything you'd need to make delicious Japanese food. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Japanese stores remind me of my childhood. Really, they are full of cute stuff you don't need. Even the condoms are cute. I grew up with all the Sanrio and friends and toys and love cute stuff as an Asian woman does. I love to pop into Japanese grocery stores for little snacks and food. This one is nice as it has rice balls and stuff. You can get a variety of pre-made food like sushi, onigiri, sashimi, donburi, takoyaki, all the best stuff. As well as packaged food for the freezer and fridge. Many cute options and varieties. Oh and now I'm happy because they have matcha swirl ice cream in a cone to go and dantang mochi on a stick!!! Ahhhh!!! So cute

Yelp
Thank you Yelp for leading me to this Japanese grocery store! My friends and I happened to be wandering around in the summer and we were hungry. Katagiri happened to be in my bookmarks and I couldn't wait to try what it had to offer. The store is very well maintained: it is clean and everything is neatly stacked. I got the onigiri, fried fish, rice, and mugwort Mochi for dessert and headed to Central Park for a mini picnic. Everything tasted really good. I can't wait to come back here again to try other Japanese foods and snacks that may perk my interest.

Yelp
Has lots of great options and the pricing is not too bad in comparison to asian markets in Queens. I would say the rice balls they have, that I'm assuming they make in-house are super lacking, like zero flavor. The vendors they had at the front which I think change every now and then was not bad but the bowl was 90% rice and 10% topping, kind of disappointing for the price. It was Brooklyn ramen Nyc when I went. We got 13 items for about $90. The other odd thing was the young male cashier put all the items into a super flimsy paper bag and had to use two hands to hand it to me, obviously the bag was very heavy and the little glued handles would never hold for longer then a block, so I asked if he could double bag it, He stared making a big deal about it and asked for another 5 cents, I stated that I just paid with a credit card and have no cash but he can charge my card again he said I had to spend at least $8 to use my credit card...! I was like okay well I just used spent $90 and you clearly see this bag won't hold, should have offered it sooner. Lucky for me the nice lady working next to him stepped in and offered to double it free of charge. This was my first time here, experience was overall good but I wouldn't travel out of my way to come back.

Yelp
I gave one star because the Japanese dry foods I buy from there a fine. Because it's dried food. As long as it's not expired how can that go wrong. My issue is with their pre- made food. DISGUSTING. I've been here a couple times to grocery shop but never picked up the food until today. I get home and eat the katsu bento box only to discover that I brought a friend home with me from this store. So gross. Grocery shopping here is fine but i don't recommend buying the pre-made foods.
google avatar

Venna Q. T.

Yelp
Nothing better than a little market like this when you're in the middle of running errands. Especially when you can't decide what to eat. If you can't spare about 15 minutes to sit down and eat, grab two of the onigiri and you can eat while you're walking. That's what I did. I also picked up one of the sushi special boxes and took the subway uptown to Central Park. There's a big selection of chilled drinks in the refrigerators next to the cash register too. They have a ton of snacks, household goods and even a meat department in the very back of the store. The instant ramen selection is great too. They have a solid selection. But why bother when they have a Brooklyn Ramen inside?! Actually, I didn't try it so I can't comment on that. This review is strictly for the onigiri (filling enclosed in a triangle of rice, wrapped in seaweed). I got one salmon but I should've gotten the plum too. I was afraid it was that umeboshi true plum, which it probably was. What I wanted were the damn yellow pickles. Happy lunch on the go!

Akira S.

Yelp
The store was very clean and organized. Onigiri section of the store was super attractive to me as a visitor. I will definitely visit the store again.
google avatar

Vivian M.

Yelp
My favorite Japanese supermarket. High quality fish that's great for DIY sushi nights or even poke bowls/ chirashi bowls.
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
This place is great for work lunch. Grab and go takeout and the triangle rice balls are delish here! I use to work near here and would come here just to get the unigiri as a snack! It's a fund place to shop for all Japanese imported items and Japanese food/sushi! It's a bit cramped since lots of people work around there will go there to buy lunch. Def go early to beat the crowd during lunch time.
google avatar

Sierra R.

Yelp
Stopped by to get ingredients to make homemade sushi. I immediately noticed how calm the place was- I think there was jazzy music playing? I was able to find everything I needed (good variety of sashimi) and when I couldn't, there was someone nearby to help. It's a little far from my side of town (Harlem), but easily accessible and not far from the closest station.
