The Restaurant Industry Personnel Shuffles Chicago Needs to Know | Eater Chicago

"I observed that Jason Chan has left Katana, the decadent LA-imported Japanese restaurant in River North, and Dan Carr—formerly GM of Sushi Roku in West Scottsdale—has taken over as general manager; Chan described the split as amicable and said he’s moving on to a larger opportunity." - Ashok Selvam

I ordered the unagi don and sushi appetizer and they were very delicious. The service was quick and the serving sizes were very big, at least for the donburis.

Raihan K.

Google
Tried Katana sushi for first time after reading the reviews and Reddit posts. Ordered roughly 6 types of rolls and I cannot point out even one worthy roll. Sushi doesn’t taste fresh and tempura had a weird flavor/ taste to it. Spicy tuna didn’t even have a hint of spice in it. I eat sushi often in different places but this was most disappointing one. I feel supermarket sushi could be a better competition to this one. Overall my experience based on the taste is 3/10

Google
Beautiful and spacious on the inside. High quality food, ample portions, at a reasonable price point. Highly recommend!

Google
I liked the booths for a group of friends, we ordered a variety of dishes, all was good, fried rice was amazing! Definitely the variety of combinations of sushi is endless!

Google
This place is a hidden gem in a West Lafayette strip mall. We went for a late lunch on a Friday, and it was not too busy. We sat in a really private booth, and the place has an excellent vibe. The menu had several vegetarian options, and we tried the miso soup, MAC roll, garden roll, and the vegetable tempura. Everything was great, but we both liked the garden roll most. The prices were really reasonable, and they had lunch specials. This was our first time visiting, and we will definitely be back.

Google
Good food and service. Bento Box is the best and the Sushi lunch special is great too. Ramen Noodle & Don is good too. The Tempura fried Ice cream is a must try and you will love it. Just keep in mind that the whip cream is melt fast, don't wait.

Laura D.

Google
The sushi is so flavorful! The volcano roll is definitely something you should try! We got 4 different rolls to share between three people and we were satisfied with the quantities. The booths were an intimate setting for a medium to large party.

Brianna S.

Google
First time going to a sushi & ramen restaurant. It was good, not great. A bit salty for me. They had good service, price and cleanliness.

Yelp
Great food! We ordered vegetable broth miso ramen and spicy mayo sushi rolls, the food was tasty! The service was very fast and she also kept asking if I needed my drink refilled. The fried ice cream for dessert was yum too!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
This place is by far the best sushi in town. It's always clean inside. The service is wonderful. They are very kind and attentive without being overbearing. The crab rangoon is also the best in town. Just everything is delicious! I've never had anything bad here. This time I had the Rock and Roll and Snow Mountain roll. You can tell their ingredients are fresh. They definitely know what they're doing. Very highly recommend

Yelp
high quality cuisine, service and ambience. Long time successful business. Raman, rolls and chicken habachi, our favorites!

Yelp
My sister is new to the area and loves ramen so we decided to stop in and try Katana. This restaurant did not disappoint and far exceeded our expectations! We arrived and it was busy but the service was amazing! They took our order and had great recommendations. Our food was served quickly and was so good! The ramen portion sizes were big and the prices here were very fair for what you are given. You have to try this restaurant if you are in the area. We will definitely be back soon!

Munn P.

Yelp
Very poor customer service, our waiter never came to take our finished plates from the table at all leaving and overcrowding issue for my party of four. They have poor quality food and the sushi is small and falls apart when you try to pick it up. The MALE bathroom is also evil and puts you in an evil uncomfortable situation at the urinal.

Brooke T.

Yelp
I come here all the time and they are so consistently good. Best sushi place in the area by far. Such good customer service and atmosphere as well.

Yelp
We have grown to love Katana since they opened and with the addition of a new take out place down the road we have solidified our love for Katana. The ambiance is great. The service is great. The value is great. The food is great. For the price of four smaller rolls in plastic carry out containers, no drink and no place to sit and enjoy your food at the new place, Katana gives you larger rolls that aren't premade, properly displayed on a plate, a bar menu, bottomless hot tea and great service. I'm really glad we gave them a second chance after they opened. Don't hesitate to try Katana.

Yelp
We came here on a weekday afternoon and had a lovely time! The place was a little less than half full, and our party of two got to sit in one of the large booths. The interior had a modern, casual vibe. We ordered a chicken teriyaki lunch box, salmon sashimi, and beef yaki udon. Everything was so tasty - I especially loved how the teriyaki sauce was a perfect balance of sweet and savory. The dishes were all amazing value, and nothing was too salty. The salmon also tasted fresh. Our server was attentive, and everything came out quickly. I'd definitely recommend this spot for Japanese food!

Jo D.

Yelp
Food delicious! I ordered Chicken with Broccoli and had a ginger salad- also very crisp and tasty. Service was outstanding! Dining room was clean nice atmosphere and good place to have conversation

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We started with several of the apps. The miso soup was perfect. A nice amount of green onion, tofu, and miso. The spicy edamame was also a winner. It had the spicy pepper oil which also made for a great dipping sauce for our other apps including the shrimp tempura, crab Rangoon, and Kani salad. I'm telling you all of these were on par as any other sushi place I've been to that I love. I would say that the crab Rangoon were well seasoned and not too oily. I didn't really care for the dipping sauce for them because it was too sweet in my opinion The rolls came out and I was pleased with those as well. The spicy avocado wasn't too spicy but tasted delicious. Everything tasted fresh and came out quickly. The service was fantastic as well. Our drinks were kept full at all times. The plates were quickly cleared. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
I love the servers there! And the gyoza is sooooo good! Highly recommend! It's so beautiful there as well!

Yelp
I LOVE this place, it's super cute. They have some nice open tables as well as some booths. I find the booths so cute because they have something like a bead curtain on the side. I always get the spicy ramen and find it so tasty. It's a nice place to sit and talk and the service is nice as well.

Yelp
Glad they closes late & people come and go the restaurant. Love their chandelier but the dimness of the restaurant makes me not enjoy the food. I ordered ramen but hubby made fun of it bec it tasted like a prepacked noodles. Don't be fooled by their lack of plating skills, their sashimi is fresh! The servers are very attentive and the place is very spacious.

Yelp
One of the best sushi and ramen restaurants in Lafayette. Would like a bit more variation in sushi types but what they have is quite good and economical.
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
EXTREMELY rude staff! Walked in to pick up order, immediately lady yells "5 minute" at me before I can say a word! Then I say I'm here to pick up, she points at a bench in a corner and yells you sit over there! This place can go to hell.
google avatar

Mariyam S.

Yelp
Called ahead and placed an order for pick-up. Unfortunately you do have to go inside as they do not at present offer curbside pick up. I spoke to Janet/Jeanette over the phone who was a bit curt and seemed to be in a big rush to end the call. We tried the following: 1) shrimp sumai - this was pretty good albeit a little soggier than I'm used to. 2) aged tofu - nice big pieces of tofu with yummy sauce on the side 3) spider roll - I asked how many pieces are in an order of their regular rolls and was told 6, however only got 5 spider rolls. They were not well packed and two of the rolls had come apart (see photos). 4) spicy girl roll - you get 8 pieces. Very yummy. 5) Tokyo Chicken - comes with a side of rice and either soup or salad. To be honest, this dish tasted like it had been made a while ago... very soggy and not crispy at all. You are probably better off ordering this if eating in person rather than delivery/pick-up. Good portion! The miso soup was good. Total cost - approx $50 Overall the packaging and service was not the greatest but the food is good. I would give them another go!

Yelp
Best tasting sushi out here. I moved here from the east coast and the fish here tastes the least bad than all the others. I've returned many times. Great seating, service, and to-go.

Yelp
This is our go-to date night in West Lafayette. We love the staff (we also love that they know us by now), and the food is consistently great. It's the most affordable sushi for the quality, and the ramen is amazing too. We love that we don't break the bank visiting Katana, but it genuinely is our favorite restaurant in the Lafayette area!

Tyler S.

Yelp
They really came through for me on a really hard day. I've been sick for the past few days and needing good food to nourish me and cheer me up. I ordered through a delivery and an item got missed, the katsu to the beef katsu curry dish which is excellent. Its alright, the rest had come so its not a big deal. A few minutes later my doorbell rang and the front of house of the restaurant had come to personally deliver the missing item and apologize for the mistake. This restaurant and its staff are incredible and wonderful. I greatly appreciate them and their amazing food.

Hugh N.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. We were visiting Lafayette for a vacation and decided to try this place. I had the Tonkatsu Ramen and shumai both excellent. I would return to try the sushi. Good find!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch. The restaurant is very clean and sanitized with good distancing. Everyone was wearing a mask. I chose the 3 roll lunch which includes soup or salad. The miso soup was hot and flavorful. Green onions evident. I had spicy tuna, Boston and shrimp tempura rolls. All were great. Very fresh ingredients and delivered rapidly for a busy dining room. Good value for a nice, not fast food lunch. The menu is extensive. Will certainly want to try it again.

Yelp
Well, great sushi and other dishes everyone else had. But.... I asked for the Ugani Don. Oh, what is that? It is normally a Japanese rice bowl topped with grilled eel. Unagi means eel and don (short for donburi) means rice. Unadon is the casual way to eat unagi and is generally cheaper than unagi jyu. But the important thing to remember is "grilled." So the dish comes out, it's cold and NOT grilled. So bad. So sorry. So disappointed. This could have been such a good and very simple dish to prepare. The forgot the grill step and the eel was just soft and mushy. Such a disappointment for a $16 meal. There are other meals here, but whomever is in the kitchen can not cook what's on the menu. Either train your staff or take items off the menu that they don't know how to cook.

Yelp
Modern setting in a strip mall on a good busy street on the west side of town. Parking is easy too. Came at 5pm on a weeknight and were the first customers here. Menu is expansive with fancy innovative sushi rolls. This first trip had a dinner bento and teppanyaki beef. Service was quick direct and food was fast too. Everything was quite tasty and we would come back. Def want to try the ramen in the future. Nothing fancy about the place but I don't need that. There were a lot of takeout orders being picked up too. Didn't have room for dessert. One sushi roll two teas and the entrees totaled $52 with tax and tip. Not bad for a casual week dinner.

Yelp
I love getting delivery from this place. I've never been disappointed when trying new items from the menu: sushi, ramen, you name it! This is my go-to place for delivery or pick up and I'm a huge fan. I've been working my way through the ramen menu as you can see from the photos, so far I like them all!

Yelp
Grabbed the kids during Christmas break to meet the Mrs for lunch. For starters don't expect friendly servers, if you can deal with that it's a decent experience. Not as good as Sushi Don. Almost everything was prepared as described but a little on the bland side. Luckily there is chili pepper seasoning on every table. It was the perfect compliment if you like to dial in your spice level and saltiness. My wife wasn't terribly impressed with the lunch sushi (spicy tuna & tempura chicken rolls) she said she had had better sushi from a gas station. Now that's sketchy. The chicken karaage were tiny bits of fried chicken that were over done and very dry. On the menu it looks like small fried chicken wings. Once I spiced up my ramen dish it was pretty good. Loaded with too many noodles and shy on broth. To taste the noodles alone, one would not humm with delight. What I mean is it's obvious they are pre boiled in bland water and tossed in at service. I wish the smaller places would take time to bring the noodles back to life within the broth. If anyone can steer me to a place not in Chicago that makes fresh noodles and prepares them properly I would be in your debt. I gave this a 2.8 out of 5.

Barry N.

Yelp
Rudest service in the area. Employees are outright angry at every guest. Food? Meh. For the price, there are a lot of places that offer better for less money.
google avatar

Corliss H.

Yelp
If I could give it 4.5 I would add a half star. The sushi was fresh, delicious and the rice had a nice balanced flavor. Tuna was very fresh, delicious and the avocado was perfect! We did an order for pickup because hubby had a very short window for eating lunch. They included a hot appetizer for crab Rangoon for free when we picked up our order. I don't know if this was a special, she really didn't say why, just that we were getting a free appetizer. It was six pieces and they were good, a little on the sweeter side but good. We didn't get to try any ramen but based on the sushi order I will return to try more menu items. Of special note on the service, which was excellent and prompt. As I mentioned earlier hubby had a short window, and it started at 11:30. They open at 11:00 and it's 15 minutes away. So I called the night before, they graciously took my order when I explained the timing problem and were so helpful. And when my son and I arrived at 11:10 everything was ready to go even though we were 5 minutes early. This allowed us to have a nice, unhurried lunch where his meetings were held. I will definitely be dining at Katana again.

Yelp
Make reservations!!! This place is popping. The food is delicious, specially the sushi thank you chef for giving us sushi on the house to try...it was delicious

Yelp
I went here for lunch with a bunch of coworkers the other day. Located in a strip mall, it's an unassuming looking place from the outside. Inside the ambiance is much better and you can forget you're sitting in a strip mall. We got one of the private booths with the bead curtains which made for a cozy little spot. From sushi to ramen, the menu has a great variety. I ordered the ramen and it did not disappoint. If I had to make a complaint it would be that the egg in the ramen was a cut hard boiled egg rather than the usual soft boiled egg found in ramen, but it was delicious regardless. Very large portion. I couldn't finish it all. I definitely look forward to returning and trying more of the menu.

Yelp
Went here on a Tuesday night with a group of about 12 people. The location is great considering that it shares the parking lot with Payless and other businesses in the area. The restaurant is much bigger than I expected with ample seating space. It wasn't very busy. I had made reservations for this place since I had a big group and they offered us the private room in the back, which is also their karaoke room. I was a bit concerned about a karaoke room in a restaurant, but they assured me that it won't disturb the other customers. The private room was a big booth, essentially with a TV, speakers, mics and disco lights which doubled up as a private eating space. The service was nice. As soon as I entered the room (I was the first person there), the manager came by to introduce himself and give me a lay of the land. He also offered to help me with any requests that I had. Service was prompt. I got the spicy miso soup with pork. Usually, I gravitate to good sushi and try to stay away from the pork dishes, but I had heard good things about their ramen and wanted to give it a shot. I was very impressed with their ramen. The spiciness was just the right amount of spicy, and the ramen was very flavorful. The meat was cooked beautifully and the egg was made to perfection. A couple of my friends got the same dish and it seemed that the dish was consistent across the board. Prices were decent. For Lafayette, I was very impressed with the whole package. I will definitely be back and maybe next time, try out the karaoke. Verdict: Get their ramen.

Yelp
Fantastic sushi menu! So many choices and it's great plus delish! Love the combos too'
google avatar

Yelp
Huge menu! So much to choose from, ramen, sushi, sashimi, and great selection of familiar and popular appetizers and desserts all with Asian fusion flare. There's a great atmosphere here with well thought out tables and cool little private dining chambers. We were treated well and got frequent checks from the staff for refills and making sure things turned out right. There was some confusion with the chef's sashimi special, looked like we got to choose which ones we wanted, but upon inquiring we thankfully saved ourselves quite a bit of money as it is a specified chef selection. That should be clearer on the menu. It is not the highest quality sushi in the area, that goes to Mary, but very easy to eat and enjoy especially the crab Rangoon and the spicy rolls with jalapeno. Good to see a chef not hesitate putting in the hot greens. Prices are typical for the area however competition is getting fierce with many great options. But with Sushi Don cutting off their half priced sushi the only deals are the five dollar Wednesdays at Fresh Thyme leaving places like this as an easy option for sit down sushi.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh. Emm. Gee. The perfect place to reset your Asian food values. Swoon, I am in love! Again! This place is so hard core, stompingly good, I cant even express it in words. Eat here. Love me for it. I know, pally. I know.

I D.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was great. The lady really helped us with ordering. It was very clean and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
I order from here a lot. Partially because it's close to Pay Less but also because I like that I can use their own online system and not give away money to third party delivery services. The sushi is quite creative. They have a large variety of rolls and options and I think we almost always get maybe 4-5 small rolls and a noodle dish and a starter for a family of four adults. The special rolls are significantly larger in size (usually 6 pieces) while the smaller rolls are 8 pieces and bite sized. They also sell Beijing duck at this restaurant that you have to order in advance. It's not truly authentic because the skin is not crispy, but it's still good roasted duck. I ordered the udon with beef a couple times mostly to make it a fuller meal but it is one of their weaker dishes.

Peyton S.

Yelp
Best miso I've ever had, naruto rolls fell apart but that's okay, the soup is haunted it moves on its own across the table. Very very good sushi. Highly recommend checking this place out if you want sushi.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place always so good. I always get the Godzilla roll and tamago. I also love the miso soup

Yelp
If you are craving ramen and sushi then you must go to katana! Everything tasted so yummy. The spicy Edamame is to die for! Coated in chilis, it is delicious@

Yelp
Haven't had a bad meal from Katana. Love their sushi. Good service. Wife loves the ramen.

Yelp
I order food from here all the time and i love it so much. My favorites are the dynamite roll and sweet mango roll. Fried calamari and vegetable tempura are also great. They also have amazing bubble tea... i always get the taro with tapioca pearl and it's amazing
google avatar

Yelp
The sweetheart roll was awesome. Service is good. Very reasonable prices. The seating was not social distances but clean properly. The shrimp hibachi was tasty as well.

Nathaniel M.

Yelp
The service was wonderful!! The vibe is cool too. There were hardly any people in there so we had no wait. We had the crunchy California roll, the Philly, and the dragon roll. The dragon was our favorite. The crab Rangoons are AMAZING!!! Would come back!!
google avatar

Anne T.

Yelp
Great food , lovely environment and very curterious waitress!! We had Age Tofu (teast better then it sounds) and Shumai for appetizers, we finished all before I have a chance to take a picture. Salmon sushi, and Tonkotso Ramens! Although they don't do the Pork Billy much anymore, but she brought me a plate of thin sliced pork that with extra fatty on them. Excellent customer services on top of the delicious food! 謝謝那位服務小姐,你非常體貼,注意客人的需求!
google avatar

Mitchell B.

Yelp
I absolutely love the sushi from Katana. I also got the fried rice as well. Staff is super friendly and extremely fast. The decor is very modern and the big booths are a great seating option. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Yelp
This place is amazing! If you haven't been here it's a MUST TRY! everything is as good as it looks! Super fresh, perfectly cooked! Certainly will return!!!! This is our new go to place! The service was friendly and great

Yelp
I'm in love. This has easily become my favorite sushi joint in the city. Starting with the atmosphere. I love the intimate booths covered with beaded curtains giving you privacy even if you're a party of one. The staff is attentive but not in your face and who doesn't love an orchid flower on their plate. The food: lunch specials are amazing, you can score two rolls with soup and salad for less than $9. For dinner try my favorite roll, The Ninja which is topped with salmon and old bay seasoning. Hidden away in the Payless shopping center you may just pass it by but be sure to stop in and try it out, you'll thank me later.

Yelp
A good experience about sums up what you can expect here as a dining experience -- not bad, but not excellent. The interior of the restaurant is pleasant, emulating a modernised/neon-ified Tokyo restaurant, black-stained wood and lacquer off-setting the colourful, glammy lights. The menu has a wide array of sushis, from the simple to the popular Americana rolls you can find in most sushi parlours across the country (Dragon roll, California roll, CC roll, etc.), as well as some other, cooked Japanese fare for those who might not be fans of raw fish, such as a small selection of udon, ramen, bento boxes, and so forth. I had a fried California roll with a stir-fried chicken yaki udon, and both were nice, though not the best versions I have ever tasted. I also had the "hot tea" (ostensibly green tea), and I was a little put-out to find that, however else they prepare the tea, they finish it off by blasting it in a microwave, given that the cup is far too hot to hold at first when they serve you it (which doesn't happen if the tea was heated or boiled on its own, then poured into the cup to be served). The service was a little bit chilly as well -- not rude, just sort of absent-minded or apathetic. So there are a few edges that could be smoothed out a little as far as the food quality and service goes, but, again, it is not bad, and I will definitely return.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Have only been here once. I look forward to coming back. I had the beef udon noodle soup and oh it it the spot for my craving. Fresh gyoza with delightful flavors and dipping sauce. Daughter had a chicken stir fry udon, she also ate it all and enjoyed. Looking forward to coming back to the nice, clean restaurant for sushi!!

Yelp
The service was ok. Our waiter seemed busy with otuer tables a lot but the waitress at the table across from us was super nice and helpful. The food was amazing we will 100% be returning. We also ordered the Mochi but my kid's ate it before we for a picture. They were very professional and kept things super clean .
