This is excellent ice cream shop with unique flavors. Rose almond was perfect. It is a plant based ice cream but you can tell by taste .

Kamal C.

Google
So much choice, I got to sample lots of the ice creams, and they were all divine. I asked for a reccomendation and went for the Ube and Java Chip + a cookie and all I can say is you've not truly experienced life to its maximum potential if you haven't tried the Ube. Thank you for existing and I cannot wait to be back for more!

Tai L.

Google
Staff was super friendly. The ice cream surpassed my expectations. Really tasty especially for being vegan. The peanut butter flavor and ube one were really good! It’s a bit pricey for a small scoop but it’s rich. The cookie dough one oddly had a very light and fluffy consistency compared to the other flavors which were more dense. I like most of the flavors they have tho. Only thing I think needs help is the waffle dish. It’s too thick and doesn’t have much flavor or fragrance. This place is Definitely worth a try tho in my opinion!

Google
This vegan ice cream is absolutely fabulous!! My little Midwest heart skipped a beat when I saw they had Blue Moon as a vegan special of the month. It’s so nice to see so many different and fun flavors!! Favorite ice cream shop in Portland so far 🙌

Sarah

Google
Such a cute ice cream spot! The ice cream is yummy and the people are really nice. I tried the waffle bowl and while it’s a little hard to eat, it was still good. The ube ice cream is definitely my favorite!

Google
Fantastic seasonal flavors like peach pie and I tried the key lime and dad loved the peanut brittle. They opened just last year. Server was as sweet as the ice cream 😄

Google
Incredible! The fancy brownie chocolate (vegan and gluten free) withe a small scoop of blanched almond rose water ice cream are a match made for this planet.

Google
Super good vegan ice cream. The employee with the neck tattoos was very nice and helpful. I wish they had ice cream cake by the slice.

Yelp
Coming from Austin and not being vegan, I wasn't familiar with Kate's, but the ice cream here is genuinely great. I tried a seasonal sweet potato pie flavor and an ube flavor. Both were delicious and had clean, sweet flavors without any strong aftertaste, which can happen sometimes with vegan ice creams. The waffle cone is vegan too, and while bottom tip of the cone became more hard than crispy, I would still get the waffle cone again. They give free samples, and I love the double-sided sample spoons because it makes you feel less guilty about trying two flavors at once. The person who helped me was incredibly friendly and walked me through each flavor while I sampled. He explained the ingredients, what made each one unique, and which ones were seasonal. I ordered a split scoop in a waffle cone, and the portion felt close to a double scoop. Your mileage may vary, but if you're stuck between one scoop or two, consider the split scoop. A couple small tables inside and free self-serve water, although when I was there, most customers were taking their ice cream to walk with. Fantastic service, great flavors, and a fully vegan menu that even non-vegans will love.

Yelp
Kate's Ice Cream is a plant-based and fully vegan Portland-based ice cream chain that was once voted the best vegan ice cream in the entire nation! This location is in Northwest Portland where there is street parking all around the area. Inside, they have a nice and cozy setup with a couple tables for seating. For their menu, they have a unique selection of different ice cream flavors to choose from. Wifey ended up getting the Marionberry Cobbler and I got the Orange Creamsicle. All of the staff very friendly and accommodating here. This is definitely one of the best ice cream shops in PDX!

Yelp
Terrific, esp love the option of the small scoop. Proud to say I've been to all three locations. Great atmosphere and good for the planet.
google avatar

Linnea E.

Yelp
Dairy free ice cream? Yes please! My lactose intolerance thanks you Kate. I visited in the summer and got to try the range of seasonal flavors before opting with to go with the peach crisp which I highly recommend! Light and fruity with a nice mix of oat crumble. And of course I couldn't say no to a fresh waffle cone!

Yelp
This was my first time trying this ice cream shop, and it was great! The staff was friendly and offered me and my friends plenty of samples to try. Also inside is very cute with not a lot of seatings. I've heard Kate ice cream is known for their plant based ice cream flavors, and I was really impressed. They also use a lot of local ingredients, which is a great touch. Everything I tried was delicious, and I ended up going with the sweet corn and blueberry jam flavor. It was great although I did find it a bit too sweet after a while. Still, I'll definitely stop by again if I'm ever in the area!

Yelp
Who knew plant-based and gluten free ice cream can be so good? The family stopped by after dinner for some ice cream. The staff were friendly and encouraged is to try different flavors. My kids opted for a scoop each of the triple chocolate brownie and cookie monster. My weakness is a good floral flavor ice cream and the rose water cardamom hit the spot. You can order your scoops by the flight, mini scoop, single scoop, solid scoop, double scoop, or triple scoop. You could also grab a point if your favorite flavor here too to bring home.
google avatar

Jed R.

Yelp
It's vegan. Make sure you read that before going in (I know I did). I tried the ube and it was good but I landed on just what I wanted...the vanilla. You could kinda taste the difference but it was still pretty solid overall. The service was pretty quick. The kicker...they have flights!!!
google avatar

Tram D.

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop on 23rd. For vegan ice cream, it was really smooth and creamy. The cookie monster flavor has a light coconut flavor to it as does the ube! The coconut flavor pairs really well with the ube. While good, I do think it's a little expensive. I got the mini scoop and it was $5.25. My friends got the split scoop for $6 something which was a better deal as the scoops were a lot bigger and fairer.
google avatar

Nina J.

Yelp
Amazing vegan ice cream! They use coconut milk based for their ice cream. The texture is incredible and if I were blindfolded I wouldn't be able to tell it's vegan ice cream! The Cookie Monster flavor is great, but the Ube is by far my favorite. It's super rich and has a strong flavor. To get your money's worth, I recommend the split scoop for $6.25 which was basically two whole scoops. The mini scoop is very very small compared to the single scoop size.

Yelp
Yummy and always a treat. It's fanciful and fun - a special place especially if you've known Kate's since it was a cart and pop up.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Wonderful place with some of the best plant based ice cream I've had! Servers are pleasant and welcoming. They let you take your time tasting the flavors. The seasonal flavors are creative and reflect what's fresh. They had a peach crumble, key lime pie and sweet corn with blueberry jam when we went in July. It's a clean space with a few seats indoors and lots of people enjoying their treats outside as well. Even if you don't have to have plant based, you should try it. May change your mind about how good it can be!
google avatar

Yelp
i'm your biggest fan, i'll always stop by when i'm in the neighborhood, somehow my stomach always makes space, (even when i'm stuffed) plant-based, gluten-free, it's always a treat, you're bound to love, always so friendly and welcoming, (even when i'm absolutely nonplussed as to the flavor i'm feeling) samoa, butterscotch toffee, santa's cookies, peach are just some of my seasonal faves, cozy indoor seating, water, pints to go, ice cream sandwiches, pick up a pin while you're at it, thank you, Kate's, c ya next time!
google avatar

Jas L.

Yelp
During my Portland foodie tour, I stopped by Kate's Ice Cream and it was everything a dairy-free dessert lover could want! This airy, modern spot serves up plant-based & gluten-free ice cream that doesn't compromise on flavor or texture. As an ice cream lover, I was delightfully surprised! I went for a small scoop of the Strawberry--a classic done right, made with coconut cream and swirled with housemade Oregon strawberry jam. The flavor was perfectly balanced--creamy, slightly tangy, and naturally sweet, with real fruit shining through. The shop itself was bright, welcoming, and perfect for a casual treat. Whether you're dairy-free, gluten-free, or just looking for amazing ice cream to try, Kate's is a must-visit in PDX!

Yelp
Such an adorable 100 plant based ice cream shop, the ambiance entering it makes you instantly smile. The ascetics of the shop are inviting, the colors of the shop are warm and welcoming. The staff is very friendly. I ordered pistachio and it was delicious and the pistachio kick after is really nice. CC accepted.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
I think I'm not the target audience for vegan ice cream- I find that it's very hard to achieve the right textural consistency with them and they often end up all being too sweet for me, but the creative flavors at Kate's were worth a shot, and the staff are very friendly! The sweet corn and blueberry was nice for the summer, and marionberry is always lovely as a flavor of anything. It's definitely very expensive ice cream and you get tiny little scoops. I'd recommend it to my friends who have dietary restrictions but not necessarily those to have access to dairy based desserts.
google avatar

Elizabeth Q.

Yelp
Craving some yummy dairy-free ice cream that still tastes like real ice cream? You've found the right place! Food: I was drawn in by the seasonal Van Gogh flavor with "golden honeecomb stars" and ended up landing on the pistachio. I really appreciated the texture and consistency of the ice cream - it had the density of a typical ice cream but without the stereotypical vegan coconut milk flavor. I'd come back for this! Service: generous samples and super kind staff! Great experience. Ambiance: limited bench seating with 2 tables and 2 chairs. Nice to sit on the bench for a bit! Really simple cute vibe here. There's also a water jug and a bathroom!
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
So yummy and service was friendly! So many great flavors to try and I love that you can split a one scoop. Inside was small but roomy, there was a lot of seating for how small the space is- there is also more seating outside.
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
So good! Tastes just like regular ice cream, if not better! The servers are all super sweet and patient and the ambiance is so cute and bright!
google avatar

Jasmine F.

Yelp
Great unique flavors of ice cream. We got the orange Creamsicle. It definitely taste like orange Creamsicle probably my favorite. reasonable prices. Yelp
Vegan and delicious. My non vegan family members are always happy to try Kate's favors. I keep missing the taco days!!!!

Yelp
Kate's Ice Cream is ranked the best ice cream in Portland for a reason! Walking in the store I was nervous since I had high hopes and medium expectations. I went with a friend who knew more about the establishment and assured me the ice cream was just as good as everyone says. After looking at the options for a bit, the worker, who was genuinely so kind and helpful gave me some samples and aided me in selecting the perfect flavor for that moment. I took my first few bites of ice cream and I was sold. What a delicious and exciting scoop of ice cream that was. In addition to the delicious flavors in my mouth the space was cute, welcoming and appropriate for the amount and kinds of clientele who visited the store during my visit. Although it was such good ice cream I do try and limit myself to just a few visits per month since it feels more like a special experience than a casual spot. Thank you Kate!

Yelp
Kate's Ice Cream has two locations, and this is their location on 23rd. Walking into it, it's a very bright and cute ice cream shop. The staff working there when I came was extremely friendly, good at conversation, and super helpful. He explained many of the different ice cream flavors and the ice cream making process, which was really interesting as all of the ice creams were vegan! We ultimately got the cookie monster flavor, but everything that we tried was delicious. Super delicious, friendly workers, and lots of fun flavors. Support this local business!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
If you gave Kate's ice cream to someone and didn't tell them it was vegan...they'd never know. Not only is it vegan, but it's also some of the best ice cream I've ever had. I've had a bunch of different flavors including chocolate brownie, orange creamsicle, strawberry, mint chip, and lemon blueberry....ALL 100% PURE SLAPPERS.
google avatar

Kayla V.

Yelp
has fun flavors that i enjoy every time. and not only is it accessible to nearly everyone being dairy- and gluten-free, but they also mark other ingredients that people could be sensitive to, especially important when people with one sensitivity often have others workers are always super friendly too
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
Perhaps the best vegan ice cream I've had. They do multiple split scoops, and the service is great!

Dianiia R.

Yelp
Loved it, I will come again, I got Marionberry Cobbler and Strawberry at the bottom in a waffle cone, just delicious!
google avatar

Stacie M.

Yelp
Wow. I have not stopped raving about this ice cream since I ate at Kate's last week. Every flavor I tried was delicious! So creamy and flavorful. I just wish there was one in San Diego!
google avatar

Dee G.

Yelp
It's non-dairy ice cream that actually taste good! Cute shop, nice staff, free samples and great flavor options. Decor is fun & trendy.
google avatar

Dookie G.

Yelp
It's so good I had to write another review! Kates ice cream is right down the street from I work. I have began taking all my clients there during work breaks. The look on there faces after trying samples is amazing! Keep it coming Kate!
google avatar

Yelp
Well, Google maps brought us to you, we happened to stumble on this unique ice cream shop when we were drive back to Washington from Hillsboro, taking the back way. Staff were very friendly, the place was clean and the ice cream was on point. Had no idea it was plant based until we walked in, totally love the flavors offered and enjoyed every bite as we sampled many of the offerings! We are totally stoked we stumbled on your place! Look forward to a return visit the next time through.

Yelp
Extremely friendly service, inventive delicious flavors... what more could you ask for?! You will not miss the dairy!!
google avatar

Katy L.

Yelp
Best ice cream in town! And I'm not a vegan Servers are always friendly and will always pass out a taste to be sure you get what you want. I like the "split" single cup if you can't make up your mind! Not a lot of seating but easy to stroll with a cup or a cone.
google avatar

Fannie H.

Yelp
A Vegan Ice Cream shop, yes please! This place is so pretty and bright and filled with options that can make anyone's day. I chose the Mint Chocolate Chip and it was so good! The Cookie Monster was also a nice follow up! Look forward to going back for more choices!
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Some of the best vegan ice cream I've had! Super creamy, great flavors and a super friendly server! I had the pistachio and the rose water cardamom almond. Both were great!

Hitesh P.

Yelp
Came with a group including both my family and another couple. Nice ambiance and amazing plant based ice cream! Our friend couple who lives nearby recommended coming and this place did not disappoint! Our older child has a dairy allergy and the wide selection of ice cream was fantastic! All of us had different flavors and everyone was very pleased with their choices! Will definitely stop by the next time we visit Portland!

Bria ..

Yelp
For me it's not as good as everyone says. I honestly don't understand the hype and am not sure what I'm missing. I WANT to like this place more -- I absolutely love that it is a 100% vegan ice cream shop -- but I always walk out disappointed. I keep trying and hoping for it to be better because as I said, I want to like this place so much. The flavors aren't that exciting or strong/flavorful, and the ice cream is a tad sugary for me. The texture is decent. Fifty Licks' vegan ice cream is MUCH better, though unfortunately they are not an all vegan shop.
google avatar

Nadia M.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Delicious and doesn't even taste dairy or gluten free. We tried the Marionberry cobbler - WOW. The crispy walnut / oat bits nestled within the fresh Marionberry ribbons was seriously to die for. Husband had the ice cream sandwich peach crisp cookie. YUM. This is hands down the best ice cream shop I've ever experienced. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to Kate's.
google avatar

Craig L.

Yelp
Great quick service. Java chip, peach crisp, Ube. All ice cream made w coconut cream so all flavors have a coconut taste. 100% vegan.
google avatar

T C.

Yelp
I had the Orange Creamsicle ice cream and it was DELICIOUS! The folks working there were super nice and let me be a little indecisive. The shop is very clean and cute, and love all the pics of the dogs on the wall. Really looking forward to going back to try more flavors, and I really want to get an ice cream cake from here for my bday.
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
Just wanted to add something to my previously posted review; it just so happened I was jones-in' for some ice cream and this just really hit the spot! It was a Marion Berry flavor, and, I was told all ingredients are local (I DO hope, well, except for the coconut milk ; ) it's made locally too I think they said which makes it even better! I didn't feel bloated or overly full aft eating it which was also a huge plus ( I feel pretty bad aft eating dairy ice cream these days)! So was very pleased to leave feeling satisfied and full and not a bit of discomfort. Yay!
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
We love this place!! Invited a couple friends over to Kate's and we had a lovely time sitting inside this cute little spot. We hadn't found a brand of ice cream that wasn't inflammatory in some way until Kate's. It's the best gluten free and vegan ice cream we've ever had, and we'll definitely keep coming back. Next time we'll take a Tun with us to go because we've been craving it ever since.

Nicole A.

Yelp
They have a delicious pup cup here. The only problem is now my dog will only take walks past Kate's. They're human ice cream is really good too
google avatar

malia s.

Yelp
I finally made it to a Kate's ice cream!! The server was super friendly and the ice cream was SO good, honestly I didn't realize how good dairy free could be. Don't miss it. It was cold and rainy and made the day better.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Congratulations on the second location. It's awesome to have two locations to choose from. To have a gluten free and vegan ice cream parlor is pretty rad. Highly recommend. Delicious ice cream and great staff. Highly recommend anyone that loves ice cream to check Kate's out.
google avatar

Frank R.

Yelp
Ice cream was creamy and delicious ! Lots of great flavors. A little pricey but it's worth it! All you need is one small scoop to satisfy that craving.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic ice cream! Only downfall is we are from Vegas and won't get it unless we ever visit Portland again.
google avatar

Kate J.

Yelp
Just discovered this location on 23rd Ave! Wow all of the flavor options with none of the cholesterol! I tried the coffee ice cream "java chip"(?) It was spectacular, I happen to have just started a 2 month carb restriction diet otherwise I'd try every flavor and come here every work day for lunch! The ambience is magical, clean and cheerfull, with soft pastels as a pallette. The young gentleman behind the counter was super friendly, attentive and communicative. I'd give this place a score of 10 out of 10, the only thing that would make it any better is if they offered the coffee ice cream in a sugar free version so that I could eat it everyday for lunch, perhaps just sweetened with a scant amount of real maple syrup for the paleo-vegan crowd! Anyhoo, yes...a vegan ice cream lovers dream come true! I hope they get tons of support so that they can stay open!

Eddie G.

Yelp
I'm not a vegan by far but some of the best ice cream I've had, service was great , gave us a few flavors to try the caramel was amazing my wife had the banana flavored wich was amazing as well great neighborhood place

Scotty M.

Yelp
Best vegan ice cream ever. You have to go!! Awesome service and ambiance. Awesome music and selection of grab and go!! Try ube w marionberry cobbler!
