It's great to have a local fish store. The assumption is that they do one thing (fish), and they do it well. Make no mistake. Kathleen's has great quality fish, much better than Kroger or Publix, and equal to Whole Foods or Fresh Market. The "catch" is that Kathleen's is better than the former, and more convenient than the latter - just around the corner. Pretty compelling, right? The problem is value, and we'll get to that later.
The store itself is clean and uncluttered. They could use a few more tables for those who might chose to eat in-store, IMOHO. KC has about a dozen varieties of fresh fish daily. The fish are presented in a nice way, on ice, in a rolling display case. Now the quality of the fish is first rate, and they receive shipments in daily, so you're pretty much assured of great quality. Unlike most fish mongers many of the fish are pre-portioned, some of them pre-cut by the packers. And that's where there's a problem.
So, we recently we're at KC's and bought Chilean Sea Bass, one of our faves. It's advertised as 5oz pre-portioned cuts of fish at $14.99 per piece. Check out the sales receipt attached and note the "5oz" statement. When the two purchased portions were placed on our home scale, each was short of 5 oz, and cumulatively the fillets measured only about 9.6oz (vs 10oz advertised). The undiscounted price was $29.98. Doing the math that comes out to a whopping $49.13 a pound. Compare that with Whole Foods who had the same fish for $29.99 a pound, $27.99 at Fresh Market, and you have a minimum savings opportunity of $19 a pound!!!
Ok, the sauteed Chilean Sea Bass dish I made was terrific (see the pics). The fish was top quality, moist and flavorful. But unlike the Milton MILFS that are all about the convenience over cost, well, I can't justify NOT driving to Whole Foods to save $19 a pound. Keep in mind the perspective here... When was the last time you heard that Whole Foods was a cost leader??? Nonetheless, that's the first world problem we have here in Milton.
Again, make no mistake. I want Kathleen's Catch to thrive here in Milton. I love fresh fish at least once a week, and KC has great fish. Plus they are a local business. I like that. But for long term success I am concerned that other customers will come to the same conclusion that I came to and make alternate fish store choices based on pricing. There's a cost-versus-value concern with KC's offerings, and I hope the marketplace will bring KC's pricing back in line with the other quality fish stores in the area.
Besides, I don't really want to drive the extra five minutes to Whole Foods. ; )
