The 27 Best Restaurants in Nagoya, Japan | Eater

"Among the first establishments in Nagoya to earn a Michelin star, Kato specializes in gleaming-white, hand-cut udon. Start with the seasonal tempura, which emerges piping-hot with a quick sprinkle of flaky sea salt. Then inquire about the restaurant’s selection of local and regional sake. Order a chilled bottle and drink it over ice for a nice contrast to the steamy fried food. Finish with a bowl of udon, either barely submerged in subtly briny dashi or crowned with niku miso, a paste of wagyu beef and the region’s famed red miso. [$$]" - Nina Li Coomes

Great place, very cozy, friendly and nice. They had English menu for foreigners. The flavor and consistency of the udon noodles was perfect. Best I had in my life. The prices were good too. One thing you have to eat udon if you don’t want them to charge you for not eating lmao 👌 totally worth the 30 hour I walked there from my hotel. You have to have the tempura veggies.

I visited lunchtime. As usual, there was a long line of customers waiting outside the shop. Since I had some extra time, I decided to join the queue. The young staff members, both in the kitchen and on the floor, demonstrated remarkable coordination. I chose the refreshing "Cold Raw Soy Sauce Udon" and was recommended to try it with "Sudachi" citrus. I also ordered a side of crispy tempura with three types of vegetables. It became clear that the popularity of this place is well-deserved and goes beyond mere trendiness. I was truly impressed and felt that it was worth making time to visit.

I went there for lunch, lovely place. I had the season tempura (scallop), the vegetables tempura (carrot, pumpkin and onion) and the shoyu udon. The tempura is fried very nicely and it’s crispy outside and soft inside. The udon is nicely chewy and good quality (from Kagawa prefecture). The broth is particularly tasty. The prices are high, but the quality is there - I paid 2,020 yen for the 3 items. It does take some time for the food to be handed, so go there with calm and time in your hands.

Had a nice experience of getting their Zaru Udon with dipping sauce as well as a side of their Oden. The Oden for us was surprisingly the star and something not to be missed. The udon was well cooked and the dipping sauce taste was good as well. For foreigners there is an English menu available.

It was my first time trying cold soba and it's something I'd never do again but this is more of just prererence as I've soon tried my wife's hot beef udon then my opinion changed for all the better. It was heavenly especially combined with the shrimp tempura.

The experience from the start was outstanding from the wonderful service to the amazing food. The lineup queue to get into this restaurant is well worth the wait.

It’s a straightforward place - sells udon (hot and cold) and tempura. There’s an English menu with vegetable, prawn and/or chicken tempura options. Batter was light and kids loved the chicken. Noodles were humongous portion so we each had to downgrade to the small portion. But it is pretty good! Chewy and I slurped up my whole plate of cold udon, the kake soup udon is also good , very light, my 1/4/7 year olds shaved off their portions. NOTE each person (including kids) must order one order of udon set. The tempura isn’t counted. I think I knocked off one star for that reason. Otherwise a good option to tick off lunch when in the area. Wouldn’t make a long trip just for this.
