NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"In Park Slope, Katsu is a Japanese spot that looks like a casual option for when you forget to buy groceries. The most expensive thing on the menu is an $18 grilled eel meal, and you can find all sorts of comforting food like katsu curry, or grilled mackerel on the menu." - will hartman

Would love to gate keep this place, but it’s too good not to be shared! The food is an extremely good price, especially for what you get! Great portions, amazing tasting food, and a very nice family owned and operated vibe! If you get the chance, check this place out! You seriously won’t regret it!

I am a bit torn writing this review. On the one hand, I selfishly hope Katsu remains a hidden gem. On the other, the kind owners, who I assume are the only employees, are certainly deserving of praise. I have never been to Japan and I can't say I am an expert in Japanese Katsu style dishes. What I do know is kind people, honest prices, and delicious food. You will find all three at Katsu on 5th Ave in Park Slope. I will be back in the near future, and I recommend you try it out for yourself.

Delicious food served by the sweetest owners. Consistent quality every time I have ordered. They take cash and credit at the same price with non minimum on credit. The only downside would be the ventilation system, which is non-existent it seems, so you will end up smelling like grease after dining in 😕

The chicken karaage don is my favorite! Really flavorful and tender and honestly better (and better priced) than some full-service Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. I never write reviews, but the folks there (maybe the owners?) are so kind, the food is incredible, and honestly they deserve all the business! You won’t be disappointed.

I got the chicken katsu curry. It was amazing value and they were very nice. Only $15 and it came with chicken, rice, gyoza, miso soup, curry, tomatoes, and cabbage. In a good portion size too. I was stuffed after. The lady also brought us our food and threw away the garbage which they don’t usually do at restaurants where you order at the counter. I definitely recommend trying this restaurant.

Google
Great space for a quick meal. The pork Katsu meal is delicious. The pork is nice and crispy, the breading is not as fluffy and light as some other places but I still enjoyed it. The staff are sweet and very friendly.

Yelp
I love this place for it's katsu but the Grilled Mackeral was overcooked or cooked frozen where it was spongey and tough. Sorry, but maybe stay away from the fish here if they aren't going to prepare it right. It's a shame because anyone looking for a good fish dinner not heavy fried food will have to skip this place. That staff are wonderful and the shared seating is a plenty. Just not sure why fish is on the menu...

Yelp
Taking up residence in the excellent but poorly attended Dragon is this new Japanese Katsu/curry spot. They've kept the interior the same which I loved, very pleased about that. The staff is lovely; super helpful and polite. Have tried a few things from here and it's very solid. Would especially recommend the chicken or shrimp Katsu sets, the curry is pretty delish. The pork was fine, a little on the fatty side. Really good miso soup and love the dressing with the cabbage. Gotta find a way for this spot to drum up clientele as, like dragon, it's usually fairly empty. Would def recommend.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! The food is really tasty and affordable. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. My kids -- who can be a little picky at times -- loved it. The chicken Katsu was a generous portion and the curry sauce was warming and delicious.

Yelp
It's a very affordable and great quality spot. Amazing lunch special especially the bento box . rare find not sure why it's not more popular.
