The Essential Guide to Kyoto, Japan

"Preserved as the home, workshop, and kiln of potter Kawai Kanjiro, this site is not a conventional museum but the actual place where he lived and worked, and walking through his living spaces lets me immerse myself in his humble lifestyle and see authentic examples of his natural-glaze work. Love the place, I bet it’s every artists’ dream to have a house & atelier like this. The cat is also very lovely. However I was very worried that there is a lily flower on the second floor when the cat is just roaming around the house freely. Lilies are highly toxic to cats and can cause severe kidney damage or even death simply being in the same room. Please I beg you to search for non-toxic flowers and plants for cats and replace them. Tulips and Lilies are the worst for cats. The cat is super friendly, an exeptional host. Other than the flower, the place is so aesthetically pleasing and has rich history. The work of the artist is really beautiful.

Kawai Kanjuro’s House in Kyoto is an absolute must-visit. The atmosphere and energy are incredible, offering a deep sense of serenity and tranquility. The artist’s works are stunning—especially the climbing kiln (noborigama), which every ceramic art enthusiast should see. Entrance fee: ¥900

Nice place to visit to see how a pottery craftsman lived years ago. True Japanese style home, but a bit larger than average home would be. Maybe a bit expensive for what you see, but the experience is worth a little more too. 900yen for 12 and older. 500 yen if students have school ID with them.

Kawai Kanjiro’s house is a delight to visit and I recommend it to all lovers of architecture, pottery handicrafts (or even cats). The ticket is only 900yen and allows entry to the house and gallery spaces. The traditional Japanese courtyard house holds quite a few surprises such as the kilns and showcases a high degree of craftsmanship in all facets of the experience. I imagine for most people about 1 hour will be sufficient to see everything and relax a little bit too.

A really beautiful house and history. 900 yen to enter. There are slippers provided for you. The kiln is amazing to walk around and through, the kitchen set up is super impressive. Can’t imagine how awesome it would be to have an apparatus like that in my daily life. There is a Cute and friendly house cat everyone seems to fall in love with

A great opportunity to see a unique Kyoto town house filled with unique works of art and antique furniture. The kiln in the back is amazing to see, as well as snippets of the process of ceramic making in Kyoto. There is also a cat, which I would add an extra star for, if I could.

A truly beautiful and spacious house filled with the works of the artist. It offers a unique glimpse into the architecture and lifestyle of that era, allowing you to step back in time and experience the traditional Japanese way of life. As a bonus, the resident cat adds a warm, welcoming touch, making the visit even more memorable.
