The Alta Group & Nigel Jones bring Cal-Jamaican mains & rum punches to cool Caribbean digs.
"Kaya was a restaurant opened by Nigel Jones in 2018 as a partner with Alta Group. The restaurant was located in the former Market Street location of Alta but closed last week. Jones has filed a lawsuit accusing Daniel Patterson of not fulfilling some financial obligations in their partnership." - Ellen Fort
"Kaya, a Market Street restaurant partnership between chefs Nigel Jones (of Oakland’s Kingston 11) and Daniel Patterson’s Alta Group, has closed. The restaurant announced the news on its website, thanking customers for their patronage over the last year-and-a-half of business. Kaya replaced the original location of Patterson’s Alta restaurant, breathing fresh life into the space across from the Twitter building in a growing tech corridor." - Caleb Pershan
"Grab a plate of piri piri chicken or oxtail stew before the show at Kaya, the Jamaican restaurant helmed by chef Nigel Jones. Excellent tropical cocktails are particularly inviting, as is its location just blocks from the Orpheum theater and Bill Graham. I" - Ellen Fort
"Skip the expensive pre-fixe menus and head to Jamaican restaurant Kaya for its usual a la carte menu. Food will be served until 10 p.m. but the bar will be open until midnight with a DJ and Champagne toast. Reservations can be made via OpenTable here." - Janelle Bitker
"Pete Kane adds his review to the growing portfolio at Nigel Jones and Daniel Patterson’s much-discussed “bougie-fied” San Francisco version of Kingston 11. “Fun, approachable places have done best” in this little corner of Market Street, Kane says, and Kaya “continues the tradition.” Although the menu is “practically identical” Kingston 11, Kane chalks up the price increase to the inclusive-tipping policy, and is happy with the East Bay-West Bay translations. The salt fish fritters were “thoroughly excellent,” the caramelized carrots and squash were bursting with “exuberant personality,” and the pickled papaya salad was the perfect counterpoint “perfect counterpoint to all the Scotch Bonnet peppers.” All of it setting you up for the standouts: jerk chicken and the sticky but not-to-be-overlooked black pepper crab." - Andrew Dalton
