Kazan - Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Kazan is a Mission sushi restaurant with an even mix of straightforward maki and specialty rolls topped with torched hamachi and soft shell crab. There’s also a long list of Japanese small plates including okonomiyaki and ika-geso along with a tight selection of donburi and noodles." - Patrick Wong

SF’s Best Casual Neighborhood Sushi Spots - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Kazan is the best sushi in this part of the Mission. The sashimi and the kazan roll with hamachi, avocado, asparagus, and green onion are what you want here. On weekends, the place feels like a party, and the kitchen gets pretty generous in sending out free green tea ice cream or cheesecake desserts." - Taylor Abrams, Will Kamensky

This place is wonderful! Service was impeccable. Everything came quickly and exactly as we asked for. The atmosphere was quaint and comfortable - made you want to sink back and enjoy the experience of eating here. My daughter and I had rolls - they were definitely straight from the kitchen and high quality, fresh ingredients. But the highlight was the Okonomiyaki (kimchee pancakes) my girlfriend ordered. I couldn’t take my eyes off of this dish - it almost looked like it was dancing:) so beyond mesmerizing - and a dish she absolutely loved. I can’t explain and give it justice - you’ll just have to try it!! If you like kimchee, try this unique dish! But honestly, you can’t go wrong - everything we ordered was high quality, authentic and delicious!

Kazan is a hidden gem that deserves to be packed with lines out the door. I couldn't believe I was able to just stroll in, pick my seat, and enjoy such an amazing meal. Their rolls are extremely unique and bursting with flavor. The service? Next level. I loved the miso soup and house salad—they really nailed the accompaniments. Fantastic value for the price too! Oh, and the fried chicken skewers? Absolutely banging. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Highly recommend getting hot wings, fried squid tentacles, ikura. Do not recommend getting oysters. Fresh, but overwhelmed with sauce.

The salmon and tuna were standouts here. All the fried dishes (spicy popcorn chicken, the mushroom fries, and the katsu with chicken) were pretty mediocre. Heavy, not good meat. The menu was confusing, we wanted chicken katsu but misread and got a chicken egg over rice dish instead. Luckily, the staff was accommodating of our mistake and swapped out the dish.

Google
Enjoyed a wonderful meal! Loved the wakame, the pride roll, and the green tea ice cream (large scoop!). Also got a roll I think was called the last samurai- it was too big and the filling was too rich for my liking (but the menu did say XXL, so I was warned). Good quality house sake. Walls are painted black so it’s a very dim, ambient space. Overall great experience.

Google
I had a truly excellent meal here. The sushi is very fresh, obviously expertly selected by the chef and exquisitely prepared. Each piece was more delightful than the last! The menu of Nigri is really exciting (multiple kinds of toro!). I loved being able to taste multiple cuts of the same fish & compare them. Nice selection of sake as well. Service was excellent, attentive & helpful. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but it's in line with the quality delivered, without question. If you're looking for an elevated sushi experience, Kazan is your destination.

Google
Food: 3/5 Service: 3.5/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 Overall: Food was pretty standard fare in my opinion. The extended review... Food: Beef Gyoza - 3/5 - A good amount of filling and a good crispy texture. Overall it was standard fare. Unagi Kabayaki - 3/5 - I always am curious to see how big a portion every restaurant serves. This portion was sort of small in my opinion. The flavor was decent. Service: 3.5/5 - Friendly service. Ambiance: 3.5/5 - A nice ambiance overall.

Come back to us Kazan. You were my favorite sushi place in sf, and the remodel has been going on too long. I miss the great portions, fun menu, and chill atmosphere.

Yelp
Great ambiance and even better service! And the sushi.... so good!! We were 17 girls celebrating a birthday and were so happy this restaurant was able to accommodate. Sushi came out so quick and so well done and presented. We definitely enjoyed ourselves and the food.. great portions.

Yelp
Moving up to SF from the South Bay, I struggled to find a sushi roll place in the city that really hits the mark in terms of quality and quantity that you'd typically find everywhere else in the Bay Area with SF sushi scene truly about nigiri, omakase, and sashimi quality. I'm confident to say after a year of being here that I have found the best sushi rolls in the city at Kazan in the mission. I typically get the Last Samurai (XXL) and the 49er roll. When I eat sushi, I love to binge so I'm trying to find the biggest rolls you can possibly get, which is what Kazan is all about and you'd honestly just need one roll to get completely stuffed. The Last Samurai is big enough to be two rolls in one with tons of spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and crab meat and the 49er roll is salmon sashimi on top of oversized California rolls, a staple I get at any sushi restaurant that has it. The first time I ordered here, I didn't realize on DoorDash you had to tab on utensils and condiments to get them. The second time I ordered, they called to make sure I wanted it so I didn't not have them again. They also were super polite about it, even when I was pretty mad that they didn't include it the first time (being a mistake on my side). If you're looking for the best sushi rolls in SF, you'll find it at Kazan.

Yelp
First of all, I was pleasantly surprised by how clean & cute it was inside. A little gem on 24th. Got takoyaki, the threesome roll, & the 24th st roll. All were very good! The takoyaki was solid, but I wouldn't have been too sad without it. Typically I like sashimi/nigiri, but the balance of flavors and sauces on each were great and the fish cuts were thick. Everything tasted fresh. And it wasn't too expensive either!

Yelp
Tasty and fresh sushi set in a dim, intimate atmosphere. Space is small but nice with very friendly service. Weekend visit during early evening for a group of 3 as a walk in. Only a couple other diners and we were sat right away. Pride (Rainbow) Roll - crab and avocado topped with tuna, salmon, hamachi, green onion. Good balance of fishes with creaminess and sweetness from avocado and crab respectively. Shishito Fries - tempura battered and fried shishito pepper. Crispy and not oily which made them enjoyable to eat.

Yelp
You'll often find a tradeoff between price and quality for Bay Area sushi, but I believe this to be a false dichotomy. Because if you know where to look, you'll find gems like Kazan which excel in both. Kazan's nestled in an unassuming, smaller space on the 24th street stretch. But, do notes: big things come in small packages. My date suggested this place (he's a frequent patron), so he pretty much ordered our spread. Not too peckish, we had two nigiri samplers, calamari, and an a la carte otoro nigiri. The attention to detail with the miscellaneous garnishes and blow torch finishes on every nigiri seemed straight out of your average upscale sushi experience, yet Kazan's dishes come at a fraction of the price. Factoring in the sheer quality, the sushi is pretty darn good, but when additionally factoring in the cost, my God, the sushi is a godsend. Our waitress was also attentive, ensuring to bring out chilled glasses for our beer to share. It's dispiriting to dine at Kazan, only to head back to the sushi desert that is Danville, but I guess that just means I'll have to make the trek out for another visit.

Yelp
Quality fish! Big portions for an appropriate price! I can't speak to service or ambiance because I order their food over a delivery service, but I was very impressed by the quality of their dishes. The Sashimi Don (although branded as small) were the perfect size. The slices of salmon were large and super fresh (there was no fishy taste or smell). I would definitely come here to dine in to try their other dishes from the expansive menu.

Yelp
Wow what a hidden gem! I was honestly blown away by Kazan. Service was excellent and food came out SO fast! Every dish we had was delicious, we had the 24th st, threesome, last samurai, and the salmon carpaccio. My favs were the 24th st and the last samurai but everything was amazing!! I highly highly recommend coming here. This will now be my go to stop for sushi in SF!

Yelp
I love the sushi from Kazan! They really pack the rolls with a lot of fish and it was very fresh. I also really enjoyed the sashimi salad. It had a lot of good flavor and it was packed with fish. The service was good. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
GOOD but pricey. Stumbled upon this little Izakaya/sushi spot while trying to get a drink in the mission area. I had a good experience, but man oh man, this place is a little pricey. The bluefin tuna sampler was my favorite thing that we ordered. Each cut was super thick, and it came with 8 total pieces beginning with the leaner cut and progressing towards the rich and buttery otoro. UGH so good but damn $48. I thought the third cut of tuna, the chutoro, actually tasted better than the otoro because it wasn't overwhelmingly rich. Still, all very tasty and served with grated wasabi and a wasabi relish. The mushroom fries and the shishito fries were also very good, nice and crispy and costs $11 and $10, which wasn't terrible. The spicy salmon kama had a nice kick to it, seared perfectly and still very juicy, not overcooked at all. $16 for kama is pretty standard. And lastly we ordered a bottle of kikusui sake at $69/bottle and that definitely set our bill higher than expected, but you can't have fried tapas without sake. It's the cherry on top. Overall, I would definitely come here again, but would be a little more careful on picking the expensive items on the menu. Although I'd say their fish quality is pretty great.

Yelp
10/10. I went to Kazan for a birthday lunch & it was surprisingly RLY GOOD. It was EMPTY when we came in on a Thursday around 130pm so we were a bit sus about if we came into a mid restaurant. Naaaaahhhhh Once the food came out LEMME TELL U, it was so good. I got the lion king roll (my FAVORITE - 10/10), firecracker roll (9/10), threesome roll (8/10). I also got the Chirashi bowl which was pretty good-- really fresh & filling. But i honestly liked the rolls better. I wouldn't say it's a place for a fancy meal- i think it's more fitting to come in for casual vibes. The lighting was really dark but we got seated near a window so it was okk. Would def recommend & come again. Another plus- it's dog friendly!

Yelp
Decent spot to get Japanese food in the Mission. The restaurant was not busy and the server was able to seat my boyfriend and I promptly. Once we ordered, the food came out swiftly one by one and this was great since we were both famished. Highlights: Beef Teriyaki- the beef was cooked to perfection and was succulent. The oils of the beef coated the rice nicely with each bite I had. The teriyaki sauce was a perfect balance of salty and umami. Salmon toro nigiri- lightly seared just for the oils to seep out and coat the outer layer of the fish. The ikura was slightly briny which elevated the delicate flavor of the salmon belly. Delicious. Anago- my boyfriend really enjoyed how fresh the Anago was and it wasn't masked with an abundance of sauce. Unfortunately the real crab roll fell short which was disappointing since the California roll wasn't too bad. The crab was not fully defrosted, felt cold and lacked flavor depth. The California roll, on the other hand, was great and had the perfect rice to filling ratio. The only thing I would've loved more is if there was a bit more mayo to give it a creamier taste. The Kazan roll wasn't bad but was hidden underneath a bed of salad. I did like the unique crunch that the carrots within the roll gave and the seared tuna on top was delicious. Popcorn chicken was not what I was expecting. The outer layer was perfectly crisp but the chicken itself was a bit dry. The spicy sauce was great though but definitely be careful if you can't handle spicy food. Overall great experience and will be back to try their other options.

Yelp
Came here for sushi and ended up getting far more than we expected, as everything on the menu was appealing. All of the food we ordered was made fresh with quality ingredients, so much that we could taste the difference in comparison to other similar places. We loved every single dish we got... the lion king roll, three some roll, new england clam chowder croquette, tonkatsu ramen soup, and tuna and hamachi toro (it was all so good, the leftovers were minimal). We also received quick and attentive service, the one employee taking care of all the tables was super friendly and made us feel welcome. The restaurant was clean and inviting, with simple and charming decor and lighting creating a great ambience for date night... or any night! :)

Yelp
You know that scene at the end of Ratatouille where the guy has the food that just feeds his soul? This was that for me today. My compliments to the chef! I had been craving sushi, probably because I'm playing a video game right now where you regain health by eating sushi. I knew I'd be in SF today with time for lunch, and most of the other sushi places in the Mission are only open for dinner. I wanted chirashi, but it was a little out of my budget, so I went for the sashimi salad, and it was exactly what I didn't know I needed. Crunchy topping, fresh fish, citrus, a well balanced light dressing, and tomato slices made this much more interesting and satisfying than I expected. Ambiance was quiet with upbeat music, which I initially thought was too much, but the food cheered me up to the point where I was enjoying it. Would definitely go out of my way to come back for this dish, and to try other things on the menu. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Stopped by for an early dinner on the weekend and was seated immediately (party of 2). We got a roll and sashimi deluxe to share. The roll itself was solid and tasted pretty good. Not too much rice either which I appreciated. However, I did feel that they went kind of overboard with the toppings. The veggies were fine but I feel like there was more than necessary. Moving onto the sashimi plate, this was a mixed bag. I would say half of the fish selection was good while the other half was either ok or didn't taste that great. The main pieces like salmon, tuna, and yellowtail tasted good though so I was happy with that at least. Overall, had a good experience though and would definitely just stick to nigiri/sashimi that you're familiar with and enjoy or rolls.

Yelp
Checked this place out last week because I'm always on the hunt for a new great sushi spot, and I'm glad I did! We arrived around 8pm on a Wednesday night, no reservation, and were seated indoors immediately. We tried: 24th st roll, Kazan roll, Lion King roll, and sexy sexy roll. While they are definitely not the best sushi I've had in the city, the rolls had great flavor, and they are HUGE. Definitely over ordered, haha. It's nowhere near the best sushi I've had in the city, but I do think it's a solid option for the location, and satisfies the sushi craving. A lot of their appetizers looked and sounded good - I would consider coming back here to try some more of the menu! Ambiance was also great, music was not too loud, and service was attentive. I've noted some reviews to mention the opposite so perhaps they've taken the feedback.

Yelp
My friend ordered the omakase nigiri, and she pointed out that it was very fresh and the presentation was on point. She also order the lion kill roll for us to share. Now, I never had sushi before nor do I want to because of it being ya know, raw, but my friend told me to try the lion king roll since the salmon is baked. I ate it and almost gag because of the creaminess from the overall sushi. Sorry, but it's gonna be a no for me. For my appetizers, I got the curry sweet potato fries which comes with aioli sauce. The strong curry powder mix with the sweetness of the potato goes really well together. I also got the grilled chicken teriyaki w/ green onion & onion which comes with rice, salad, miso soup as my main dish. Everything tasted really good! As for our drinks, my friend got their homemade honey ginger iced tea. I saw that they had a matcha cream stout beer on their menu, which I was really intrigued. At first sip, you can really taste the chocolate while the aftertaste is more matcha-like. It wasn't bad at all. My friend tried it, and she said it tasted like tobacco lol.

Yelp
Get the Hawaiian Poke! Super fresh salmon and ahi tuna in a light delicious soy sauce and mixed greens. It's the perfect light lunch.

Yelp
this place used to be very good. ita still very good but I feel like they can do better work on the rolls. I really like the omelet roll that they serve in the morning, I used to finish it in the car already

Yelp
Went on a Friday evening and there was no wait. We were sat right away. Tried the Threesome Roll and 24th Street Roll and they were both delicious. The rolls are large and the amount of fish is plentiful. They also put a lot of sauce which I enjoyed. Great place that I would highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was super good! The sashimi pieces were huge and everything was a great portion. The service was great and the food came out really quick. I also really loved the ambiance of the restaurant and all the food was super delicious! My favorite was definitely the three some roll or the last samurai! Also the hamachi sashimi was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Favorite sushi spot in the Mission for the price to quality value. I love their selection of nigiri and the hot dishes offer some variety from other sushi appetizers. It's my go-to spot for a casual sushi dinner and better for small groups. It's a smaller dining area that's very lively and intimate. The owners are always super friendly and service is quick and helpful. What to order: *Kazan roll - my favorite roll! Best if you like seared hamachi and the sauce is very refreshing and savory. A little on the saltier side but this is what makes it tasty! *Sake toro hand roll - the BEST hand roll with generous slices of avocado and thick seared salmon belly. It's smoky and rich. I love that you can turn almost any nigiri on the menu into a handroll upon request. The hot dishes are pretty good but I would skip the mushroom fries as the breading slid off the oyster mushrooms. It was like eating a mozzarella stick without the cheese because it fell out. Tasted good but would've preferred breading and mushroom to stick together.

Yelp
Very cute place and friendly service. Went on a week night for my boyfriend's birthday. Food was delicious! Service was quick and timely. Very helpful staff. Picked a few rolls and had tonkatsu with a side of curry. They provided croquet as well. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This was my third visit, and their Threesome roll continues to amaze me! The quality of their sushi and sashimi is absolutely outstanding. I will definitely be coming back again!
google avatar

Yelp
Kazan is a very solid spot for sushi, with quick service, and pleasant (yet a bit dark) interior, and many options. However, as someone who really loved sushi, I was a bit surprised at their quality for the price. This sushi is far from the best I've ever had, and the price was unfortunately a bit higher than I expected. I tried the Chef's sushi platter, and most of the fish felt hard and rubbery, and did not reflect the price tag for this amount of sushi. I unfortunately would not return to this location for sushi.
google avatar

Shelley P.

Yelp
The salmon sashimi don had a generous amount of thick sliced buttery fresh salmon, and some avocado on the side - good and satisfying. We also tried a roll that was solid but not super memorable. Unfortunately my lasting impression is mostly from the ambiance which was not the most comfy due to harsh cool-toned lightbulbs and blasting EDM remixes (which can sometimes be a vibe but didn't seem to fit a quiet Sunday night)!
google avatar

Yelp
So funny, I thought I reviewed this restaurant already. Apparently not. Thanks @Yelp for reminding me. If you have a craving for delicious sashimi omakase, this is the place you should consider. The atmosphere is cozy, woody, and great for a single eater (like me). I love eating, and enjoying food by myself. I can eat however I want and however much I want without adjusting my mood to others accordingly. My first experience was 4 stars great, quiet, tasty treat. The staff left me alone after introducing the food. Attentive, unlike others had reviewed. My second visit was on a blind date. I tipped the host some coin so she could leave out the window seat for us. It could get really crowded at night (and noisy too). The food was delicious as usual. My date was impressed of course. The kind host went to say hi to us couple of times and even treated me with a complimentary drink knowing this was my blind date. Sweet. Overall, a beautiful experience. Very well-trained host. Lovely chef. Xoxo

Yelp
This is my new favorite sushi spot. The rolls were delicious! We got the bluefin tuna sashimi appetizer. It was very fresh & delicate. The 24th St. roll was my favorite, and the T. Dragon was also very good. I think the best part about this place is the chefs and waitress were so nice and incredibly accommodating. If you have allergens this is definitely the spot to go. My friend has an allergen where he's allergic to salmon but not tuna and loves sushi. We called a few places where they mentioned they use the same board for all the rolls so there would be cross contamination. This place however was so kind, attentive, and made sure to use a clean board/knife. They even let us take out things from a roll if it was a risk. We appreciated it so much and props to the female waitress. She was very friendly, on top of it, and knowledgeable. My friend felt his allergens were taken seriously and that he could enjoy eating sushi!
google avatar

Lulu S.

Yelp
I asked if the "Spicy salmon Kama" could be made not too spicy, and she said yes. When we got it, it was one of the spiciest things I've ever tasted, and all my friends who like spicy foods also said it was way too spicy to eat. When I asked the waitress about it, she insisted it wasn't spicy and said "but I'm Korean so maybe it's not spicy to me." She was argumentative and I felt very uncomfortable here. She ultimately offered a replacement, but I would not come back. The garlic edamame and hot sake was good though.
google avatar

Sophia B.

Yelp
Don't usually see sashimi bibimbap on the menu, so when I saw it, I had to order it. Bowl of rice, salad, and sashimi with gochujang sauce you can mix in. Uneven cuts of fish, but it was still delicious. Also liked their Last Samurai roll. Their spicy tuna had the perfect level of spiciness. They weren't kidding when they said it's an XXL roll. Each piece required two bites. Decent sushi, but slightly overpriced. Might come back just for their sashimi bibimbap though.
google avatar

Yelp
Actually pretty good! We came by on a Friday evening without any rezzie and were seated right away by the entrance. The ambiance of the restaurant doesn't feel like a sushi restaurant but rather more like a karaoke bar because of loud music and strobe lights lol so -1 for that. Service: Our waiters were quick, friendly, and attentive. So happy a few of them came by to check in on us! Food: Expensive but the quality, taste, and texture made up for $$$. Spicy squid - Served piping hot on a hot plate! Pretty spicy but more onions than actual squid. Threesome roll - Surprisingly good (I won't ruin it for you) and not spicy. Omakase nigiri - All the fish in this were fresh and delicious. Each had their own distinctive flavor and we really liked how they served toro, chu-toro, and o-toro lol. Would come back here again!

Yelp
The place is clean but a bit dark and has about 12 tables for two and the bar seating. The service is good and it wasn't busy on sat lunch time. The prices are pretty fair. The parking was okay that day, not sure about other times. The food was very good, the fish was very fresh. The kazan was my favorite roll, threesome was good as well and these two had different fish. I love when they torch the top, and it gives that smokey flavor. The flavors were balanced and everything went well with each other. I actually enjoyed the little salad that came with kazan haha I ate it all.
google avatar

Yelp
It was my first time ordering here. We got omakase nigiri and Sashimi Deluxe togo. Everything was so fresh. Definitely would like to go back again.

Yelp
Kazan looks tempting from their pinned photos on Yelp, but this is the loud music, dim interior, strobe lights type of Japanese restaurant. We came on a Saturday around 5:45pm, and the restaurant was empty except for 1 other table. Their nigiri and sashimi are decently expensive ($90+ for chef's sashimi platter, and a la carte nigiri was $10+ per piece for some fish), so we opted for some rolls instead. The rolls were good and decently sized, but the rice was cold and hard, and the shrimp tempura was soggy. We also ordered the mushroom fries, which was 1 oyster mushroom sliced up, battered, and fried. As the night went on, Kazan became increasingly busy, so my guess is this is the type of place you might come later in the evening, maybe to pregame, maybe for drunchies. We also got a small hot sake, which was enough for 4 pours. Definitely not a freshly ground wasabi-type of place, and I had stomach problems the following morning.

Yelp
24th Street is a busy street, but when you walk into Kazan, it's quiet, cozy, and quaint. I came here a few times for lunch back in 2018 and loved their curry dishes. This time round, my sister picked out some of her favorite dishes for us to try. I just had my wisdom teeth removed so I needed some softer foods, but the pain went out the door once I tasted everything, haha. We ordered: 1. Curry Sweet Potato Fries with a light spicy aoili - very unique; I enjoyed this a lot because it was lightly crispy, sweet and the aoili complimented the curry and sweet potato very well 2. Pride (aka Rainbow) crab & avocado; top: tuna, salmon, hamachi & green onion - fish was fresh, great cut and portion size, and the base of the roll was nicely seasoned 3. Buta (Pork) Kimchee & Age-Tofu - this was my favorite dish today. I ate that plate clean! The silken tofu was fried evenly crispy, but there's something about their kimchi... it was gently sour and cooked to a point where it tasted sweet like it was caramelized. This all paired so well with the pork belly slices cooked with the kimchi. 4. Katsu Pork Don - huge bowl of curry! I love saucy curry and it's just as big as I remember it from 2018. 5. Threesome Roll - so funny that the menu description says "don't ask, just try it". If you like spicy tuna and salmon, highly recommend. I loved it. Some places make their spicy tuna too spicy and sometimes the fattiness of the tuna is lost in the sauce/seasoning. Kazan hit this one on the mark.

Yelp
Kazan is the spot to be if you're craving sushi that delights your taste buds and sense of humor! This neighborhood gem serves up some of the freshest and highest-quality sushi in San Franciso. The atmosphere? Vibrant, lively, and infectious. You can feel the buzz in the air as patrons laugh, chat, and savor every bite. The staff at Kazan is friendly and welcoming. Now, let's talk about the sushi rolls. While they're all delicious, the names are a conversation starter. "Threesome," "Pride Roll," and "Sexy Sexy" not only roll off the tongue but are packed with flavors that will have you coming back for more. To sum it up, Kazan is a must-visit if you're in the mood for excellent quality sushi in a fun and welcoming setting--I'm already planning my next visit!

Yelp
Kazan's located in the mission. The street is pretty dark and the front of the restaurant is pretty dark. It has a Japanese curtain outside. Once we came in the restaurant it was pretty dark inside too. We parked in a loading zone at 535p so my husband was concerned that he may be towed. The server reassured us that the likeliness of being towed is low, but they do have the parking people that ticket. We were seated at the window so my husband can still see the car. We ordered agedashi tofu, garlic edemame, spider role, samurai. The agedashi tofu was nice and hot, and the tofu was silky. The rolls were really yummy. We were overall very happy with the food. I know it's good when my husband continues to rave about it for days. Another one is, he did not complain about the price of the rolls.
google avatar

Celie H.

Yelp
Worst sushi I have had in SF. The California and anything with crab is made with so much mayonnaise, that's all you can taste. The dragon role was inedible, absolutely swimming in honey and mustard; that's all you could taste! Even the miso soup just tasted like saltwater. No tofu or seaweed. Do not recommend. Skip this place.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Freshness: 3.75/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: warm, casual Ordered the Last Samurai, Threesome, Dragon roll, Uni hot plate, garlic edamame, and spam fries. My favorite dish was the uni hot plate. If you're a fan of rolls, their rolls have a ton of flavor and sauce. However I felt as if their nigiri was not as fresh as compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to in a similar price range. I always benchmark with O Toro and their O Toro was not as good as others. Overall, I'd come back for the rolls and dishes.

Yelp
One of the best spots for sushi in the city. Their food is always consistent. Rolls are perfect sizes and can we get to the customer service. I emailed Kazan regarding a catering menu. They replied back the very next day'! No catering menu, but if you order from the menu ( I chose a few rolls) they are able to customize it into a tray for you. So generous of them and pick up was a breeze! The family loved the tray I brought home :) Inside the restaurant is dim lighted and pretty romantical. I would recommend it as a date spot for the night

Yelp
After seeing my friend try Kazan and reading amazing reviews about this place, I decided to give this place a try. I came here on a Saturday around noon and made a reservation for three without any issues. The restaurant wasn't quite busy just yet, but I'd definitely make a reservation for dinner time. We tried the agedashi tofu and calamari-both were pretty standard and delicious! It's hard to mess these two up in my opinion. The broth for the agedashi tofu was a nice balance between sweet and savory. Calamari was addicting with every bite. We ordered three rolls (24th street, salmon three way, and Kazan roll) and the sashimi deluxe. The sushi rolls are the way to go! They were all definitely creative and different from typical rolls you'd find at other sushi places. My favorite was the Kazan and salmon three way: neither one were too saucy or too plain. If I do come back, I think I'd pass on the sashimi deluxe. We honestly ordered too much to begin with, but I felt that the amount of sashimi included was overwhelming in flavors (maybe a good thing if you order the sashimi and a single roll). The salmon belly in particular was tasty in the beginning but had a very strange and fishy aftertaste... Kazan is an awesome sushi bar everyone should visit! Don't pass up on their rolls. :)

Yelp
Small n cozy sushi spot, the service here is amazing. It's a little tight inside because of how small it is but it's nice. We ordered spicy popcorn chicken, okonomiyaki, and curry sweet potato fries as appetizers. The server told us the spicy popcorn chicken was really spicy, so we got the sauce on the side and she was definitely right lol. My friends with high spice tolerances couldn't even coat a whole piece of chicken in the sauce. The okonomiyaki was huge n delicious, but I might pass on the fries next time. I can't recall the names of the rolls we we got but they were what they were and they seem to use high quality fish. The nigiri was a little more expensive than what I'm used to, they're also sold one by one too so we passed. Just FYI The nigiri options aren't on the menu we were given, we had to ask and were given a chalkboard w the options that was on display!

Yelp
Sushi in the mission is not the move! Their house Kazan roll was probably my favorite. Seared tuna on top was perfect along with hamachi on the inside and a whole lot of toppings. Can never go wrong with Otoro and butter fish nigiri. They just melt in your mouth. Threeesome: Wasn't really a fan of their description which was "don't ask just try" and I really wish I asked. Didn't blow my mind away but still decent however. Oysters were not good. They put a lot of toppings on it to mask the taste which still didn't taste fresh and had more of a fishy smell.

Yelp
Best Sushi spot in all of SF for value, taste and quality. I've been here 3x and always order the sashimi omakase because it's just the best in town. Honestly they ruined other sushi or omakase for me in SF. Anytime I try new spots for omakase, it was disappointing or did not hit the mark compared to Kazan. They set the bar extremely high. The omakase sashimi not only dazzling to the eyes and the over the top serving with a raw tuna head was shocking striking the first time. After a few minutes after you get a chance to admire the fish, they will take it back to the kitchen and grill the best fish head you will ever have. Especially the cheeks. Every pieces were fantastic and my favorite was is otoro. The omakase nigiri was very impressive too. My fav piece was their uni. It was an ocean of umami's in a delicate bit size that I order another piece separately just to get that same rush. I wish I know where they source their products. AAA IN QUALITY. I can't wait to go back again!

Yelp
Located in the Mission with the mix of unassuming outside mixed with loud flashing lights, which kind of explains the entirety of the place. Came in for a weekday dinner and was seated immediately. A louder ambiance with the mix of hipster and you know, Japanese looking decor. FOOD: Nigiri Sampler. Not the reason you come here, I know, but I kind of just wanted to try it, and not the most unreasonably priced nigiri sampler. The rice was sub-par at best. The fish was, also... sub-par for San Francisco. Pretty easy to tell that this was not the greatest quality of fish. It works fine for rolls, but not for nigiri. I honestly would not recommend getting this. They put in the effort to make it look palatable, but not great, even for the price. I guess Tuesdays aren't the best day to get fresh fish though. Spicy Chicken Wings. Good crunch, and decently juicy wings, but the sauce was a bit salty. I usually love things on the saltier side. Big spicy too, which was what I was looking for. But sweet, tangy, too salty, and good spicy. Not sure I would recommend. John's Spicy Cold Ramen. Honestly pretty good. Ramen on a bed of greens, with a nice tangy spicy sauce. A good combination of textures with bright flavors. This is probably the best thing I ate there, and would recommend. Last Samurai Roll. Standard mayo based tuna/salmon roll with spicy tuna. Nothing special, can easily find rolls like this elsewhere, but they still did a good job with. Had that crunchy inside and soft creamy flavors to go with the fish. Solid. Overall, unimpressed. I'd say probably a regular place if you're looking for some simple rolls and maybe some apps. The cold ramen was pretty cool to try. Based on a SINGLE try on a Tuesday, the fish was not up to par, which maybe coming in on a Tuesday for fresh fish was the problem, but I'll pretty much only come back if I'm craving that cold ramen.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night for a party of 3 around 6pm and we were seated immediately without a reservation. The host/waitress was great! We ordered: -Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi Sampler (5/5): came with 8 thick pieces of sashimi. Fresh and flavor of the cuts were decent for what it was worth! I believe it was around $42. The speciality wasabi also tasted really good! -Green Dragon Roll (5/5): a standard roll but delicious! -Okonomiyaki (5/5): never tried an okonomiyaki with kimchi in it. It was interesting but somehow good? Definitely tasted the kimchi and also gave the okonomiyaki a little crunch -Agedashi tofu (4/5): came with 3 pieces of tofu. The tofu was okay but the tsuyu sauce was a little too light for my liking. Overall, I would come back again :)

Yelp
everything was good and fresh but kind of expensive for the experience/quality... not sure if i'd come back, i'd just go somewhere cheaper w similar vibes or spring for somewhere more elevated.

Yelp
I recently came to Kazan again, and have to say that they surpassed all of my expectations. The sashimi here is really fresh and delicious. I also got their oysters which did not disappoint. I once again ordered their otoro along with the threesome roll. Something new that I tried was their lion king roll. Everything was really delicious. This will definitely become my new go to spot for sushi!

Yelp

Yelp
Ordered 5 different dishes and all of them were horrible. Seems like this place is buying reviews or something because it was not a 4.5 star experience. First of all there wasn't enough salt on the chicken dishes. Both the chicken teriyaki and popcorn chicken had a distinct lack of salt. The sauces for the popcorn chicken were off and not what you would normally expect from a Japanese restaurant. The sashimi was gross, it wasn't bad but clearly was not fresh, likely defrosted. There were pizza boxes sitting on some barstools (not a good sign from a sushi restaurant) The menu has a wide range of items, if they had a good head chef the menu would be much smaller with less ingredients so they could execute on their offerings well. I got a bad vibe when I entered and should have listened to that and left versus getting food there.
