The Best Restaurants Near Union Square

"Think of Kazunori as Sugarfish’s fast casual cousin. Just like its predecessor, Kazunori usually has a line, but it moves quickly, and once you’re inside you can be in and out in 30 minutes. Unlike Sugarfish, this place does handrolls, and they do them very well, overflowing with fatty tuna or buttery scallop. There are no waiters—just a long bar and paper slips where you check off what you want with a pencil—but it’s still perfect for a quick date night with someone you already know everything about, or a weeknight meal with a friend. KazuNori Union Square - Review - Union Square - New York - The Infatuation

"The Union Square outpost of KazuNori does hand rolls, and they do them very well. They do them so well, in fact, that if you order takeout, they won’t do them, because apparently the time in transport would ruin their perfection. (You can get a great dinner set of cut rolls for takeout instead). This place doesn’t do reservations either, and there’s always a line, but it moves quickly. Sit at the long curving bar and try the $29 set menu with five hand rolls: squares of nori, filled with things like fatty toro, and buttery scallops. KazuNori is great for a quick, casual date night that’s still candlelit, or a quick weeknight meal with a friend, when you both want sushi near a train that will get you home and into your pajamas as soon as possible." - Willa Moore

Stopped by KazuNori for lunch on a Wednesday around noon, and it was such a nice mid-day break! 🍣✨ There was no wait when I got there, and I was able to sit right at the bar, which was perfect. It did start to fill up quickly, so I’d say get there early if you’re coming for lunch. I ordered the three-hand roll set, which came with salmon, baby scallop, and crab rolls for $20, and it was totally worth it. Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented 😋. Service was friendly and attentive, and the whole experience felt smooth and relaxed. Great spot for a quick but high-quality sushi lunch! 💯🍱

I tried the $35 six-piece set at Kazunori: The Hand Roll Bar, and it was a great experience overall. The vibe of the restaurant is sleek and minimal, with a strong focus on freshness and speed. Each hand roll was made right in front of me and served immediately, which kept the seaweed crisp and the flavors clean. The highlights were definitely the toro and the scallop rolls – buttery, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. I also appreciated how the rice was slightly warm, which really brought out the flavor of the fish. Portion-wise, it’s not super filling if you’re very hungry, but the quality makes it worthwhile. If you want a quick, premium sushi fix in a casual setting, Kazunori is a solid choice. I’d definitely come back or maybe go for the larger set next time!

Stopped by for an early dinner and was lucky enough to get seated fairly quickly since it was not busy yet. I got the 6 hand roll set which was delicious. Will definitely be going back to try some more. One of the most positive things about my experience there was the hospitality, attentiveness and atmosphere provided by Jason, who I believe is the assistant manager. He knows how to run a smooth ship with a smile. My favorite bite of the night was the Toro hand roll I ended up offering extra!

KazuNori offers a quick and clean hand-roll experience with fresh fish and nicely seasoned rice. The concept is smart — counter seating, efficient service, and made-to-order rolls that come one at a time. That said, it feels a bit more casual and systemized than I expected. It’s great for a fast, light meal, but not somewhere you linger or get a deep sushi experience. Overall, it’s a good spot for fresh, simple hand rolls when you’re nearby — reliable and easy, just not particularly memorable.

Got the set of six handles. Overall quality was OK, but the construction left something to be desired. They were rolled in cylinders as opposed to cones, which meant that the last bite usually ended up either exploding or with food fallen off the edge.

1 star due to a disturbing incident that occurred during a recent dinner. The food was wonderful (as always) and staff was kind, but the incident was not handled safely or effectively. My party was 4 visibly queer guests, myself included, out for a rare night off work. The straight couple seated next to us started glancing judgmentally in our direction and whispering to each other shortly after they were seated. I admit that we were dressed flamboyantly, although still very much appropriately for the venue and weather. We were minding our own business and talking quietly. The couple next to us gradually escalated over the course of dinner: whispering more obviously, giggling when we spoke, rolling their eyes and pointedly sipping their drinks whenever one of us got up to use the restroom, etc. This culminated in them taking pictures and very obviously filming us. I do not make that accusation lightly. The woman's phone was quite literally pointed directly at us and moving incrementally to catch our faces. She had to place it at a very awkward angle to do so as well. When I stared at her to see if I truly was being filmed, she tried to cover it by talking loudly about showing her partner something on the screen. His expression once he looked at the screen told me all I needed to know. He glanced at it, glanced up at me, made direct eye contact, and smirked disdainfully. They were absolutely filming. I quickly went to the host stand and spoke to the staff about this, and they were very kind, but took no action. It took them a while to get a manager, who said he would keep an eye on the situation and hurry the couple out ASAP. Meanwhile, the rest of my party was still being harassed. Finally, the couple was delivered their bill without any chance to order anything more, but there were no repercussions and no words said to them about inappropriate behavior. It took upwards of 20 - 30 minutes of them obviously filming for this to happen, so easily half of our dinner service. Again, staff was kind, so I don't want to place any blame there, but this should have been handled much differently. That couple should have been asked to leave immediately and/or banned from returning to any Kazunori locations. I've been back as a solo diner a couple of times since, but the rest of my party feels too unsafe to return. We absolutely love the food here, and it was heartbreaking to realize that we were not worth protecting from targeted, likely bigoted harassment. I will remain a loyal lunch customer regardless, but I can no longer recommend Kazunori to other LGBTQ people in good faith.

We stopped in here for a hand roll snack randomly one afternoon and we were so pleasantly surprised! Quick service, delicious handrolls (I had the cucumber, my friend had an assortment), and loved the sushi bar seating. The vibe is relaxed and soothing. The value was really great, too. Highly recommend!

Would eat here every week if I could. Best quality for the price rolls. About $20-25 per person and can get about 3 rolls. Each roll tasted distinct and the rice and seaweed were so well flavored. My favorite was the eel roll. Out of this world. The wait can get long so would recommend coming off-peak hours.
