I desperately wanted to come to KC Craft Ramen and bless it with my very own 10 star review, based on everything I had seen and heard of it! But, alas, reality had other plans...
TL;DR: overall, it's good, but not great.
We went early on a Saturday, as I had heard the place could STILL command quite a wait on weekends during prime time. We were able to get right in, and were seated promptly.
The dining room is tight, and the seating is less than comfortable. However, they move people through pretty darn quick, so you likely won't be here long enough for any real amount of discomfort to set in.
To the aforementioned point on "quickness": we were visited promptly after being seated by multiple staff, with freebies (popcorn!!) landing on the table, and our "waiter", if you can call it that, reviewing the menu with us first-timers, and taking our order.
On the plus side, our waiter did take a moment to go over the menu with us, answer our questions, and make recommendations. On the down side: he took payment immediately after placing the order, which became an issue because, as you would expect, the payment screen asked about a tip, prior to us actually getting to experience any actual "service", other than being seated and a quick review of the menu. Why does this matter? Well, because we never saw the guy again. Not for refills, not for serving our food, not for checking back on how the meal was progressing, not for asking about further food or dessert...nothing. So, if I could go back in time, the tip would be a hard ZERO for the service, and I feel completely duped for having to give and sign off on a tip, prior to the end of the dining experience. If they want payment for food immediately after ordering, that should not come with a tip screen included, before the dining experience and service has concluded.
As a team, they did a nice job of covering the minimal bases: serving the food, cleaning up our finished dishes, and seeing us out. Decently prompt and attentive, but relatively "cold" in overall approach.
On top of being tight, we found the dining room to be very uncomfortable from a climate perspective: warm and humid. You can tell that between the open kitchen steaming noodles and vegetables, and the warm temps outside being welcomed in every time the door (without enclosed foyer) opens, it's a major struggle to keep it comfortable on a warm day.
So, that's a LOT of talk about a restaurant before having said a word about the food! I know, I know...I'm sorry. Here's what you've all been waiting for --
The food was.........a bit lackluster, if I am completely honest. Good? Yes. Great? As much as I hate to say it, no, the food was not as great as I've heard. Maybe it's a case of oversold and underwhelmed, but, all three of us agreed that it WAS underwhelming, especially for all the hype we have heard for so long. The big positive here was that ALL the food came out extremely quickly! Like, possibly record-breaking quickly!
However, with the lackluster service and uncomfortable dining room, alongside the only-decent food, we'd be pretty hard-pressed to want to waste another "going out" evening here, unfortunately.
