If this was a run of the mill restaurant with a lower priced menu, it would probably get a higher rating for the review, but since this is advertised as an "upscale steakhouse", the standards are high where they need to perform in atmosphere, service, and food quality. Had an experience the other night that had some missteps and gets an overall "meh" from me, and worse (for being a local resident), probably the lack of any return visits for fear we have a repeat of our $200+ dining experience.
Service - friendly indeed, but attention to detail was off. Our side of mushrooms meant to be shared by the table during the steak course was extremely late (about 2/3 of our steaks were consumed by the time it finally arrived). There may have been a problem in the kitchen, these things do happen, but no one came to our table to let us know there was a delay, so we kept wondering when it was going to finally arrive, and I even tried to flag down our server to find out (unsuccessfully as he was tending to other tables). A heads up that the item was going to be delayed would have been a big service help and not plant in our collective minds that we had been forgotten. On the plus side, the manager comped the mushrooms so we didn't have to pay for them, but that's not really the point here is it? Especially for a "upscale steakhouse".
Food - we ordered 2 NY Strips, the 12oz Filet, and Salmon. Salmon was reported as excellent. The filet was ordered medium rare, came out more on the medium side. Again, hoping to catch the attention of our server, couldn't do so immediately, and our table mate was hungry so he dove into the steak knowing he'd have to wait another 15-20 minutes to get a new one. Our NYs were cooked properly but had way too much fat on the strip, a cut of meat I would expect at a diner and not somewhere I'm paying almost $40 for the steak.
Atmosphere - a nice dining room, although our table was up against the kitchen. It wasn't that bad, but certainly another table would have been much better (and we saw several tables that were open and available as we were taken to this one to be seated). Started the evening with an "oh well" instead of excitement for an upcoming great dining experience.
This is our 2nd time to KC Prime - when you're spending a lot of money for a dining experience, your expectations are high, and well, the restaurant failed to deliver on that experience when we went. It was far from bad, the server was extremely friendly and helpful, and I'm sure some of the missteps were out of his control. My steak was just OK - but when you're paying top dollar, you expect more than "just OK". We live a couple of miles from this restaurant having moved to the area just a few months ago. This would have been our special occasion go-to place that would have prompted 4-6 visits per year, but to be honest, this last visit left a sting that would probably make me search out somewhere else. I'd like to treat our experience the other night as a "one-off", but hate to invest another $200+ to try again to see if the high level value and service is in fact in place here.
YMMV, just reporting our experience, up to the reader to take what they will from it.
