Where to Find Chicago’s Best Paczki | Eater Chicago

"This Polish market with suburban locations in Schaumburg, Schiller Park, Crystal Lake, Mount Prospect, and Wheeling skews toward the traditional end of fillings with rosehip, plum butter, and raspberry for their equally traditional fried-in-lard preparation. Place orders online for a minimum of a dozen before the deadline cutoff (Tuesday, February 25 for Fat Thursday or Sunday, March 2 for Fat Tuesday). Paczki in-store pick-up is available at 4 a.m. on Fat Thursday and 6 a.m. on Fat Tuesday." - Lisa Shames

Google
Visited KD Market on June 6th, National Donut Day, while searching for Polish paczki in the area. I called about an hour before closing to check if they had any left. A very sweet elderly Polish woman from the bakery answered, clearly listed the remaining flavors, and confirmed they were made fresh that day. When we arrived, the paczki were large, soft, and fresh. Each was slightly bigger than the size of a palm. We picked up a dozen (apricot, black currant, and plum) for $24, which was a fair price for the quality. The filling was generous but not too sweet. Apricot was our favorite. We were hoping to try the vanilla cream ones too, so we’ll be back. Solid option for traditional Polish donuts.

I head a very pleasant experience at this store, I’ve have shopped here for a few years now and the selections is some of the best in terms of Polish food in the surrounding suburbs, I would highly recommend this for someone looking to dip in to Polish or Eastern European Cuisine in general as the selection and quality is top notch.

Google
KD Market is fantastic! They have the best paczki, always fresh and delicious. Their deli meats are top-quality and sliced perfectly. The staff is super friendly and helpful, making every visit a breeze. Great selection of fresh produce and other essentials. Highly recommend!

Google
I love getting the fresh bakery sweet rolls (the blueberry filled or the apple ones, all are delicious) and paczki! Specifically come to this location every year for fat Thursday as the paczki are to die for. They are fluffy and melt in your mouth amazing! This year also did not disappoint, highly recommend 👌

Google
The food and produce are top-notch. Unfortunately, male cashier D. added items to my receipt on more than 3 separate occasions. I am not going to examine the receipt every time after I do the shopping to point out what was rang incorrectly, again. Regretably, I have switched to Deli4you, even though it is not as conveniently located for me.

After 25 years of marriage. I'm learning to get along on my own My wife passed away a few months go and she was about to turn 50. After all of her hard work I figured she deserved A celebration. So I called up everyone I knew and invited the whole family. My wife comes from A town in poland called krakow So I wanted to Plan some authentic Polish food. But where to get it? I get pizza Chinese even Mediterranean, but not sure where to get. The European cuisine. Then I remember a coworker suggesting Christina's deli he gets lunch there all the time. And loves the food. So I took a chance. Met a real nice guy named Casper. We went over the menu. And in the end it didn't hurt too bad. The food was excellent. Everybody enjoyed it. And there was so much I sent people home with food and still have leftovers needless to say I'll be enjoying. All the delectables. For the rest of the week mashed potatoes Pierogi, stuffed cabbage. Chicken, pork. Oh, boy. I worked all winter on this summer body. It looks like I'll be walking the park well into June. So if you're looking for some good Polish cuisine at a fair price prepared by people who know what they're doing. Head over to KD market. And hook up some Christina's deli. For any occasion. Yes, even celebrating. A birthday. For loved ones who have passed... If that's not too strange. What am I saying? It's 20:24 anything goes.

Yelp
Love this store! Their deli is one of the best great prices and already good deals! Love their weekly deals and their produce is always fresh! It's clean! The staff is mostly very friendly :)

Yelp
went to KD to check out their meats and bakery. I found a tube of meat spread and went to the meat counter to ask if the spread was like liverwurst. She told me she didn't speak English. Then I asked if anyone else spoke English and she said no. I left the store angry. People immigrate to the US, they should learn English! After all they are moving to a country where people speak English. I also think that the women behind the counter was rude. Her service to me sucked. If she was trying to pressure me into speak Polish, it will never happen! She moved here, she can learn English or move back.

Yelp
Small Polish market that is just different enough from local competitors like Garden Fresh and Fresh International Market to stand out. Parking isn't too difficult here as it's generally not super busy and the size of the store is convenient for getting in and out rather quickly, though this does sacrifice some of the selection you'd get. However, it makes up for this by having a fairly comprehensive section of baked goods, hot foods, and cakes. Prices are in general low, though not the lowest on all goods. Presentation overall is nice, particularly in how organized the produce section is. It's also nice to see a low percentage of bruised or bad looking fruits or vegetables. There's not too much in terms of organic selection here, though this is likely due to a limit of the store size. Where this store really shines is in its selection of international items such as yogurt, cheese, butter, meats, sauces, and cookies. I also like the meat quality offered here and its generally good presentation. There's a very nice selection of fresh baked bread, and paczki from Racine Bakery. These are offered at very good prices. The cake selection is also quite competitive and offers a nice change-of-pace from the standard buttercream options you'll find at Jewel or Marianos. The prepared food is also competitively priced, with daily meal deals. Here are some quick thoughts on different items I tried: Potato pancake: Seasoned nicely with crispy edges. Meat eggroll: Fluffy and light with a generous amount of ground meat Mushroom & sauerkraut eggroll: Nice addictive flavor in the mix of mushroom and sauerkraut -- nice and tender texture. Orange chicken: Seems to be made from breast meat instead of dark meat, I do like the flavor of the fried batter though it's not really similar to the Americanized Chinese style Mixed veggies: Nice and flavorful. Contains carrots, eggplant, onions, and other vegetables which are herbed and seasoned nicely. Fried rice: Nice amount of peppers. The rice was overly soft though and lacked "wok hay". Eclair: Nice puff pastry with a good bready flavor. Smooth and fluffy cream which is very flavorful with a nice light chocolate layer on top. Cream puff: Delicious cream filling in a nice light shell. Very well done. Rum ball: Great rum flavor, very aromatic especially with the coconut exterior. I liked the chopped hazelnut and overall pleasant mouthfeel of everything when combined. Pink napoleon: Filling is a lot like marshmallow. Overall a nice flaky pastry. Fruit tart: Super cream, thick tasty cream. The crust is nice and crumbly. The fresh fruit is held together nicely by a flavorful gelatin. Well done both in terms of flavor and presentation. Overall, I do like the convenience of a market this size with a good selection of Polish and other international goods. Checkout is very fast with minimal waiting, and it's fun to shop in a nicely decorated and managed store with friendly staff.

Yelp
I'm really loving this store!!! Always clean and have fresh produce/products. Their buns are always fresh and HOT! This is our go to store for a lot of our items.

Yelp
THE BEST PIEROGIS on the planet!! Food from KD makes our holidays that much more special. Potato and sauerkraut pierogis are the best we've ever had. Wonderful dough and filling that is unparalleled. Tried the duck prepared with dried fruits for the first time at Easter and all I can say is WOW. Yummmmmm. Highly recommend. P.S. The rabbit pate was loved by all who ate!

Yelp
The best homemade soups in the world) We moved to another state and our family miss them greatly( Dear owners, take over the whole US, pls)

Yelp
After deli4you has become a walmart, i much more often find myself going to Krystynas. Krystynas flaczki and soups are way more delicious, without all that pepper (everyone has pepper at home, you can always add it, but you can't take it out and they deli4you really overpower the entire soup with pepper). KD hot foods went up a dollar, but at deli4you its now way more expensive. $9.99 for horrible, dried out fish? I will stick with fish from Krystynas. I am not impressed with d4u "Improvements" at all. Krystynas is now the best. Thank you KD Market Your deli has gotten better too. Some older woman still tried to sell you the old stuff. I try to avoid her.

Alan K.

Yelp
The people are really nice that work there it's just that before you get something you have to check the date and the price because the due dates are already bad and the food is really expensive!

Yelp
I went recently and found most of Polish items I was in need of. I couldn't get over how friendly people there are. It too small in some areas so if crowded it hard to shop. But overall I was impressed with the deli items and bakery items I bought. Prices are high everywhere now so if you looking for economical you can find great items here at similar costs elsewhere. I think you come for the taste and outstanding flavor. But I think you don't have to be polish to find some other variety here. It has something for all. Even in the regular produce and food aisles. Thank you!

Yelp
For the BEST selection and value for Polish groceries in No CHicago, go to KD market. Their meat and cheese selection are fantastic and the service was the best--very friendly and patient. Sausage and cheese, and all kinds of Polish foods are available here. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
I enjoy coming to this grocery store... I visit here quite often, store is always clean, produce always fresh, staff super friendly. The deli is awesome and so is the Bakery. Everything is freshly made and you can buy ready to go food if you don't feel like cooking sometimes lol. Small aisles but has essentials and lots of imported products which I very much like. This is more of a Polish store keep on mind lots of the staff speak Polish if you speak it and if you don't then don't worry they also speak English. Prices are reasonable and if you like shopping here make sure you enroll in their rewards program to save a few dollars every time you shop. Parking is not the best which I most say it needs improvement but the store itself I enjoy coming here.

Yelp
I love this Polish store. It's always clean. Customer service is great. I do not speak Polish. When I start to speak they revert to English or get someone who does. Unlike some of the other ethnic stores in town. If you want a great home cooked meal, try their $5.99 special. It includes a main dish and 2 sides for carry out. There is so much food, you need 2 hands to hold the container. For an extra $1 (I think) you can get homemade soup. Yummy. And this easily can feed 2 people. Everything is so fresh. The deli counter has a wonderful assortment of sausages, meats, and cheeses. The home baked breads are really good. Clean store , very fresh yummy food, and wonderful customer service. Who could ask for more?

Yelp
I love that store. A big variety of Eastern European products with the same taste that I know and remember from my childhood. Plus a good chance to practice my Polish language knowledge :)) The deli meats are the best. Period. After this you forget about Osco and Meier forever. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Shopped at KD's the first time today. Two staffers were not wearing their masks properly. When I approached the manager's office to advise them, two people in the office were standing right next to each other, and neither were masked at all. The office is right next to check-out. Another staff person declined to help me when I had a question about baked goods. She declined to help me even when I asked her to direct me to someone who speaks English. KD's has some nice product selection but I won't be returning, even after the pandemic. There are plenty of other Polish butcher/bakeries in Chicagoland. I will find one that follows both the letter and the spirit of the law on things like health guidelines.

Yelp
I had a meal with sweetened sauerkraut and I got very sick I will not go their again. The best thing about the store was the service

Yelp
I like KD and it's the best in my area. I have a couple other favorites for certain items but much further away. All in all, there are some great deli items here. I think a lot of the groceries are over priced but i don't have much comparison for the specialty items. They also have a sushi roller on site so they have fresh rolls. I'll return for some stuff, like soups, but i also live so close

Yelp
So I was trying to get to Jimenez for some dried chilis to make some Authentic tex-mex. I had no idea where it was, and then saw a sign for a grocery.... It was a Polish grocer/deli. At that point, I decided that I will just use the chili powder I have at home (plus the jalopeno I bought here) and go inside for some Polish food. Bigos, cabanos, gypsy bacon (offensive and delicious), pierogi, other dumplings, and Pączki. Holy Sh#t I just died and went to fat boy heaven. They lost a point because there were only frozen pierogi and the brocoli in the produce section was already wilted.

Yelp
Tasty selection of Polish/Russian groceries and deli. Lots of eastern European products. Good selection of fresh and frozen pierogi. Good pierogi ruskie available at the hot counter, and a good selection of fresh kielbasa hanging behind the meat counter.

Yelp
Really good hot bar and deli! I always leave with more food than I intended to buy because I want to try everything. Good selection of beers too!

Yelp
Service was a little discriminatory because I didn't look Polish even tho I was standing in line forever with my pink ticket number in hand... Anyway, a sweet Polish lady behind me saw my plight and spoke up to the rude counter girls and said Hey, take care of this gentleman next! So I got my pounds of pork butt, sausages, and ham. Then I got several quarts of the best homemade bean soup for $1.80 each. I'd like to come back but do those rude bitches deserve my return business? We'll see Stash, we'll see...

Yelp
For what it is, this is a delightful little Polish deli/grocery. If you're looking for American products or any other ethnic tidbits, you're out of luck. There's a smattering of familar items but the majority is Eastern European. The produce section is small but high quality and I found some excellent deals, like a huge pineapple for $1.49. I also got 3 lbs of Empress apples for a buck...not bagged apples, but beautiful, red, hard, crisp apples. Everything looked fresh and crisp, the store itself is spotless and is designed like an outdoor market, with a cobblestone path and faux brick buildings. The meat counter was passed by ...it was gorgeous, if you only want pork. I don't recall seeing fresh chicken or beef. The deli had a huge assortment of sausages and other meats but again, not much I was familiar with. Same with the hot, premade dishes. The bread section was good, everything was very fresh, and reasonable. There's a little alcohol section off to the left but I didn't have time to check it out. I'll come back here for the produce if the prices continue to hold up, it was worth it, but I'm not much for Eastern Europeam ethnic products.

Yelp
I like the hot food bar and I would give it a 5 star if they would cut the salt a little. I do like salt in my food, and I'm not a health nut, but I can only eat a small amount before the salt starts getting to me. Please review the salt in the meals! ty :)

Yelp
Not happy about the deli , meat and deli personel very slow and understaffed that seems to speak Russian only , they use the same gloves to cut meat and cheese and same machines also, pretty expensive here in the suburbs .I've returned old and bad products numerous times.

Yelp
I bought their saussage home made last year, it was almost without bones and delicious, my daughter told me couple weeks ago that their home made polish saussage is not like before, acctually I went and bought some at their place in Schaumburg and I'm afraid my daughter was right, so I went yesterday to wheeling to visit someone and stoped at their place their and bought home made polish saussage it's the same filled with bones and other stuff. Is it because they got bigger, usually that's the way it works in every business, I am an ex chef cook and I have experienced these thinks with Restaurant that I worked!!!!

Yelp
Last week, I went to Krystyna's Deli in Wheeling hearing that it opened very recently. I was excited to go but it was a horrible mistake. I walked in and saw displays showing items for $0.99 only knowing that by the time I payed for them at the register they were double in price. Not only that, I went to the deli to see that there were only two sausages hanging on the hooks behind the counter. Besides the fact that they had a very little amount, the sausages looked like they were hanging there for weeks. To add the cherry on top, I bought some tradition polish Krakus ham from the deli lady (who was very rude and pushy) which I later found out when I got home that it was spioled. I was relieved to know that Krystyna's wasn't the only near by place that sold liquor. The prices at Krystyna's compared to the local liquor store were much higher. I should've known not to shop there when I pulled in the parking lot to see that there were no cars-ghost town.

Yelp
Good selection of deli meats. Like the store, since it's close to my house but lately not happy with few findings. The imported products from Poland that I really enjoy, happened to be expired and still in the shelves. Need to watch those dates carefully. And the prepackaged meats... watch the dates and quality of the meat. No one wants to get sick. Still going to this store, but just being more careful checking on the quality of stuff I need.

Karen G.

Yelp
This place is super cute on the inside, if anything, go in to take a look at the decor. The produce is very fresh, and the deli area employees are very attentive. The Deli section is also fresh and my fiance really likes the meat selection. If you like eastern european cuisine then this is the place for you. This isn't a restaurant- it's more of a grocery store.

Crystal S.

Yelp
My mom and I decided to go to this grocery store since it was very close to our house. I'm not to happy about the service or the workers there. They ignored us and spoke to us in polish only knowing we didn't speak polish. They gave us dirty stares as well. I believe everyone should be treated fairly. I don't tolerate well with racism nor ignorance. No wonder they barely get any business. I will stick to other grocery stores. They need better staff.

Natalia J.

Yelp
One of my favorite delis in the area! I love their meats, their breads, hot dishes and everything in between. Their 'jagodzianki' and 'paczki' are to die for - just like in the old country!
