Where to Get the Best Mooncakes in Los Angeles and Orange County | Eater LA

"I found Kee Wah's mooncakes come straight from Hong Kong, offering traditional mung bean and white lotus paste alongside modern options like mini mooncakes piped with custard or chocolate and flavors such as green tea, Earl Grey, and caramel sea salt coffee custard, all packaged with playful panda or emperor-themed designs." - Kristie Hang

Mom needed bread so we checked this place out. Located in the San Gabriel Square, this tiny store is packed with lots of goodies. I always buy their handmade almond cookies and red bean swirl bun, so I made sure I got some. They also have moon cakes. Inside, the store is well-lighted, with regular noise level. The breads and pastries were arranged neatly, but the aisles are tight, you can’t walk freely in case you bump into another customer or the food items. There is no dine-in section, so this is purely a to-go store. You pick up a tray and select your pastries then pay up front.

There's no real atmosphere because it's not a sit down place. It's a bakery where you pick up your items, pay, and leave. There are no tables and chairs to sit at. The bakery items are all Hong Kong style bakery items like pineapple buns, sponge cake wrapped in paper, breads, pastries, moon cakes, and other goodies.

I visited your store and made an effort to communicate in Mandarin, specifically saying the word “taro.” Unfortunately, my pronunciation wasn’t very clear and wrong” and I was mocked by several staff members. I found this behavior disrespectful and disappointing. Of all the Chinese establishments I’ve visited, this was by far the rudest service experience I’ve encountered—particularly surprising given that your bakery operates as a retail business and should prioritize customer service.

Limited selection of fresh baked goods on walk in, but lots available by special order. Thankfully they seem to always have the egg tarts, Portuguese included, available. Very well done. They also have a great selection of gift boxes of cookies and other treats.

Yelp
Delicious egg tarts done 3 ways. Park on the street or behind via Abbott Street. Service is quick as everything is grab and go.

Yelp
Stopped by to get some pastries for family. Parking is in the back with one way in. I would say it's moderately inconvenience. Walked in and looked around, they only have handful of pastries to choose from. I bought their moon cake gift box for $25, which comes with 4 small pieces. It was an unexpected stop and I had no time to go to other places so I had no choice but to buy it. Employee are nice but due to over priced items and limited selection, I would probably not come back.

Yelp
The hours are wrong on yelp. They close at 530pm daily and completely closed on Tuesdays. There is a small lot in the back of this small bakery. Then there is even more parking behind that lot from the plaza. I love their egg tarts and thats what I went to buy. They had different crusts so I got a flakey one and a not flakey one for their custard egg tarts. They also had some po tat, but theyre not my favorite. The ladies are nice and they also accept cash apps like venmo as a source of payment. I went on a Thursday afternoon and the vibe was quiet and chill. The ladies were really nice and welcoming. They also had other type of baked goods such as bread, cakes, and other Asian type pastries. I will be back!

Yelp
One of the OG bakeries in SGV, and they been at this location for so many years. They have a good selection of delicious Asian bakery items; my favorite classic here are their classic green onion buns, pineapple buns and sponge cakes. They also have some very pretty Asian cakes. I love coming here whenever I'm in the area. The staff are nice, and it's fun to practice using my Cantonese here. The only thing I didn't like is the pricing; it truly went up so my favorite pastries aren't the same price as before.

Yelp
Every year, I tell my sweet wife to get me a buttercream cake, and every year, she gets some variation of a butter cake. Basically, my wife got a cake that she would like. She asked for it not to be too sweet. I can't really complain too much, as it's my wife's fault, not the bakery's. However, it didn't taste like a buttercream cake regardless. I would not be in a rush to come back here for a birthday cake as a Susie Cake's Birthday Cake is about the same price. I will have to get myself a birthday cake myself next year.

Yelp
Love this bakery, located right across the street on Valley Blvd. The best thing here is their egg tarts!! Those are super good, made fresh daily and the crust is so buttery, golden and flaky!! Other items I tried and really like are the chicken pie, pineapple bun, butter cookies, and cream puffs. Parking is non-existent so you'd have to park at the Ranch 99 lot, unless you can find street parking. I just walk here since it's more convenient.

Yelp
Excellent bakery. Customer service is top-notch. The pineapple bun with butter is incredibly tasty. The options are so varied. Service is fast and courteous. Definitely will be back for more pineapple bun with butter if I am ever in the area again.

Yelp
On a Saturday morning in late April. I stopped by to buy mini chicken pies and coconut stuffed bread since I was in the area. It wasn't too crowded at all. Inside space is small and carries cute egg roll boxes, individual bagged breads, gift ideas, cakes, and hot pastries. Very good service and the ladies speak English.
google avatar

Charnie D.

Yelp
I am a big fan of Portuguese egg tarts because of the flaky crust and rich egg custard. This was hands down one of my favorite egg tart I tried. The crust was flaky and wasn't powdery/dry compare to other egg tarts. The custard was rich with a hint of sweetness to it. I went near closing so there were limited items but I can't wait to come back during opening/early afternoon.

Yelp
There are alot of good options in this place but it is very small and pricier than the usual bakery. The staff is very friendly but the only strange thing is when you sign up for their rewards you immediately start to get international spam calls.

Yelp
Growing up in Hong Kong, Kee Wah Bakery was a household name. I remember eating lots of their cakes and baked bread as a kid. Every time I'm in Los Angeles, I always try to pick up a few items before heading back to Sacramento. I really enjoy their handmade cookies, black sesame eggrolls (wafer rolls), and mango short cake. The hard part is not buying too much! The older ladies that work there are always friendly and chatty. Reminded me so much of Hong Kong! Parking can be tricky and limted in this area. I usually stay at Hilton San Gabriel across the street and walk over.

Yelp
Was in the area visiting for some work happened to be staying at a hotel across the road.....and got really excited when I first arrived and noticed this Kee Wah Bakery directly across the road! For me, I had always known Kee Wah for their moon cakes and that's it, but I heard that they made fresh egg tarts too, so there was no way I was going to pass up a good egg tart! And as luck would have it, they had three kinds! There was their Signature Egg Tarts, Portuguese Egg Tarts, and their Kee Wah Original Egg Tarts. The difference between the three are that the Signature egg tarts have a flaky crust and the Original egg tarts have more of a crusty cookie shellt. As for the egg fillings, both the Signature and Original have a glassy smooth finish, whereas the Portuguese egg tarts have a scorched carmelized finish. All equally yummy, all equally freshly baked hot, all so hard to stop eating! I thought these egg tarts were a bit sweeter than I prefer, so it really depends on your own individual preference. As for the store, the place looked really fun.....like a toy store with very colorful goodies surrounding you....everything was so tempting, but I tried hard to stay focused on what I came here for.....Egg Tarts! Very happy I got to come here today to try one of my all time favorite desserts.

Yelp
classic terrible service. better bakeries exist. save ya coin & take it somewhere where it's actually wanted. clearly they dont need the support cuz I was about to buy & pay for over 200+ breads (which they said they could do over the phone) but as soon as i arrived they ignored my existence :)

Yelp
The ladies are always nice when I visit and everything is good. I really like the curry bun, baked cha siu bao and pineapple custard buns especially. I've gotten the tins of shortbread cookies with various animals as gifts for my mom before. They're so cute. Had the best mooncake of my life here. Pretty expensive, I think it was $6 and was only about 3 bites! But wow, was it good and an adorable panda shape. It was strawberry yogurt filled. Perfect mini size as a small gift or to try various types.

Yelp
KEE WAH BAKERY is a cute little bakery found in a large shopping center on the northeast corner of Garvey and Atlantic. We didn't come to this center for the bakery, but while walking past, it seemed like the perfect place to buy our niangao ("tikoy" for the Flips) since everything looked so festive in here. Good thing we did too. They had a lot of different traditional New Year treats in here... AND they were packaged for Year of the Rabbit New Year celebrations! They also had these butter panda cookies that were sooo good. The niangao, btw, was perfect! Just the way remember from my childhood. Parking in the center on Lunar NYE was insane. On a side note, condolences to the families and communities affected by the fatal mass shooting on the eve of the Lunar New Year.

Yelp
Tiny bakery with lots of cute desserts and even cuter packaging. So many reviews raving about this place that I feel bad giving it one star. I came in half hour before closing and while their packaged sweets looked adorable, their fresh baked goods honestly looked a little sad. That should've been my out but I had a long day of running errands, its raining, I didn't want to make another stop. I just wanted to treat myself to something sweet as a little pick me up. I ended up purchasing a small Napoleon cake. Got home and couldn't wait to try a piece. IT WAS SO DISAPPOINTING !! Nothing but a dry sponge cake with NO frosting in between and some wafers to give it a little texture. After the first bite I thought to myself this can't be right. So I gave it another shot and got a spoonful right in the middle. Same thing. The layers were all so dry and lacked the buttery richness I expected. In the trash it went. Won't be coming back to try other items.

Yelp
Came in on a weekday afternoon to purchase pastries and some of their famous egg tarts and pineapple buns. The store only had 1 other customer in there at the time and things started off well with the pleasant employee. However things took a turn for the worse when the store manager became involved. She seemed annoyed that I was speaking in English and had a really bad attitude when I asked her any questions about the pastries. For example, since I was also making a HK milk tea purchase, I asked about the milk tea& pineapple bun promotional poster ad outside. She quickly shot me down and said that it has butter inside but is NOT a pineapple bun, and doesn't qualify. Excuse me, but I've ordered that last year and it was clearly a pineapple bun with the addition of butter! I was spending about $50 in pastries, and this lady was annoyed that I was asking about a money saving combo. I was shocked that she was so rude about it! The milk tea was super watered down by the way, so such a disappointment and I can't recommend wasting money on that. Additionally, the kind employee there told her that because I purchased so much, that she included a broken egg tart for me as a gesture of goodwill. The manager lady was obviously irritated and annoyed by that, based on her nasty snickering and attitude. And if that wasn't enough, after I finished paying for everything and they were still bundling up my purchases at the counter, the manager told the worker in Mandarin to make sure I grabbed the appropriate bags and not any of the pastries lying out on the counter. Can you believe the nerve? She was speaking to me in English the entire time, then switched over to Chinese, assuming that I would steal! This lady needs a serious attitude adjustment and overhaul. I feel bad for the employees there, and felt incredibly discriminated against for not being a native chinese speaker. It's obvious that she only caters to her demographic. Just shameful. Pastries unfortunately were just OK. Nothing special, but the trauma of the experience ensures I won't step foot in here again.

Yelp
Whenever I visit SGV I come here just for the egg tarts. The crust is flaky and the egg tart is so soft. Price is fair. Great value!

Yelp
Jim's closed today. Came here around 2:30pm and all their breads were sold out. We got curry puff and bbq pork pastries. The crust is perfection. It's flakey and buttery and everything good. Their fillings need more flavor. That is all.

Yelp
Wonderful service!!! The two kind ladies that works in the small place at the front are actually nice and very friendly!! They have a lot different kinds of sweets and breads to choose from!! The menu prices are really reasonable too!! I definitely will come back over there again when I'm in San Gabriel!! Thank you all so much for everything!!! Five stars is exactly my total rating!!!!

Yelp
Cute little bakery with lots of fun snacks! I went about 2ish weeks ago to get mooncakes for mid autumn moon festival and was not disappointed! Got a mini lotus moon cake with one yolk and pineapple bread with custard and they were both so yummy! Not too sweet and just a bit salty Service was quick! I was in and out fast! will come back when I'm craving moon cake again!

Yelp
Last thrusday, we ordered a black forest 8 inch cake by phone and said we will pick it up on Saturday 11/4. At that morning, we did call again and ask for opening hours and tell them we will pick it up around 5pm. We show up at 5, and then... THEY TOLD US THEY GAVE OUR CAKE TO ANOTHER CUSTOMER BY ACCIDENT!!! I was like wth?? Are you serious?? This cake is for 2 people birthday and both of them love black forest cake! We would like to suprise them but Kee Wah staff ruin everything and they can't solve the problem and dont even act like its their fault too. End up we went to Sunny barkey which is the closer barkey shop to get a chocolate cake instead. Lucky they still have chocolate cake even it's not a black forest.

Yelp
We went here recently and the service was actually unbelievable. We stood waiting to be helped while there were 2 ladies working. One of them standing at the counter chatting with a customer while looking at things on the customers phone. The second employee was helping then ringing up a customer who had a large order - slowly separating items and repacking them into different and separate boxes & bags. We stood behind this customer waiting to be helped as next in line. It took an unusually long time which was fine but as soon as the employee was free she called the customer that arrived after us that was standing in the middle of the store...we were flabbergasted. Meanwhile the other employee is STILL talking to the customer looking at stuff on her phone... Insanely unprofessional and disrespectful behaviour. My husband wanted to leave but I didn't want to create sour vibes since we were with my mom. An extra star because the baked goods are yummy but we will never be back to this location.

Yelp
First time here to buy mooncake They are the only one that sell mix nuts & ham mooncake which I love. The store front is very small, filled with all their products, not much room to move around. I bought 2 of the mooncake together with a bag of crispy egg rolls with cashews nuts ( which is imported from China) probably not make fresh there, not sure of the moon cakes either, I cut one of the mooncake after eating it I found something looks like a string of thread kind of hard (see the pic below) After paying $16 each I expect the best. That's why I gave them 3 stars

Yelp
We stopped here to grab some baked goods to take to my father in law in hospital. The ladies working here are kind generous and funny. I'm very white, my husband is very Asian, they would switch easily between mandarin and English when speaking to either of us. We got 6 egg custards, a few baked buns and a a milk tea. Everything was delicious.

Yelp
Premiere Chinese bakery that has been known for probably three generations and maybe more. From their Hong Kong roots to here they make some of the best Chinese pastries that many try to imitate. From popular favorites like the Egg Tarts to hard-to-find Curry Pork Pastries, there is something for everyone here. There are also seasonal favorites such as Moon Cakes, and special occasion items for holidays and Social events. Sign up for their frequent flyer program and let the points get you freebies.

Yelp
I never heard of Kee Wah before and only stopped by out of curiosity. Little did I know, their Bolo breads would become the best I've had in the States! I highly recommend the Bolo with milk powder fill. You get the delicious crust on a fluffy bread with this delicious filling. I don't really know how to describe the filling besides it being pasty (which makes it sound gross, but that's the furthest from the truth). Their version had a strong vanilla flavor that I've never noticed from other bakeries. Another popular item is their Bolo bread with butter. This is hard to eat by yourself because it's just a giant slab of butter in the middle. But the warm bread contrasting with the cold butter is so good. Just share with a friend! There was a slight language barrier and she charged me for two items when I only ordered one. I let her know the mistake and she refunded me, no hassle. Glad to know that they have multiple locations! Makes for a great quick and easy breakfast when you're on the go.

Yelp
Came here around noon on Sunday, a few days before autumn festival day and OMG that line is so long. Not only is it long, it was very slow moving as well. I wanted some pastries for breakfast, so I stayed in line. I got a crispy egg tart, Portuguese egg tart, pineapple bun, bbq pork pie, and curry pork pie. Crispy egg tart 3/5: it was okay. The crust wasn't what I expected and the egg tart wasn't eggy enough for me. Portuguese egg tart 5/5: this was so good. I only wished I ordered more! The crust was flaky and the egg was the right sweetness and I love the caramelization on top. Pineapple bun 3/5: it was pretty decent. If it was a little airier then it would be even better. Bbq pork pie 5/5: the crust was very flaky and crispy. So good! The bbq pork had just enough flavor. If only there was a little more sauce to give it the savoriness it would be even better but if it was the crust may not be as flaky and crispy. Curry pork pie 4/5: crust was harder and less flaky then the bbq pork pie, but it had a good curry flavor and very filling and great for a lunch pastry.

Yelp
Popular items are egg tart and pineapple bun. The egg tart is very good! They have portuguese and traditional version. Both are delicious but the hubby prefers the portuguese version, like many other people. The pineapple bun is good too, crispy top! They don't have that many selection and option for savory is just like hot dog bread which is pretty average. Their store is small but nicely set up. Packed with goodies and they have nice gift baskets for if you want to give people. It's located across from the 99 ranch plaza, next to Tea Station. Parking is a little tight and they don't have thru street. So if you can't find parking until the end, you'll have to make a high-effort u-turn.

Koesen L.

Yelp
Recently Kee Wah had a promo where for $20 purchase you get a free sesame palmier. Went on a Sun morning and they ran out. Spent over $32! Very disappointed to say the least. Following Sunday at another location, I checked before purchasing and same response was given. Very dishonest to send out emails of the offer every week and not have enough of the product to give out. There are so many other bakeries to visit and satisfy my sweet tooth. You got me once, but not a second time!

Yelp
Yelp Reviews: Quarantine Edition #7 I love Kee Wah Bakery. Before 85 Degrees, before the anti-gluten movement, before Instagram-friendly bake off champs, Kee Wah's been delivering on looks AND taste for SGV gourmands as long as I can remember. The San Gabriel Plaza location is probably easier to access by foot, given how crowded parking can be in the main 99 Ranch Market area, but once you step foot inside you will be greeted by wall-to-wall classic Chinese bakery delights. Whether you stop by for Lunar New Year, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any random occasion for carbs, Kee Wah has you covered! Everyone has their favorites here, as befitting an OG bakery with all the goods, from cookies, to cakes, to mooncakes. But if I had to single out a specialty item to highlight, it has to be the CHICKEN PIE! These round, flaky vehicles of deliciousness sit hot and toasty in that little oven right next to the cashier, just waiting to be plucked out by one of the nice aunties running the store and carefully placed into cute Kee Wah Bakery branded boxes for enjoyment at home. Just the thought of the chicken pies has my stomach growling... flaky, buttery crust wrapped around a savory, flavorful chicken meatball. It's like a Vietnamese Pate Chaud, but with more HK/Cantonese seasonings. Make sure you grab one (or five) the next time you're here!

Yelp
Didn't realize they have one in San Gabriel Valley which I was excited to see since I had it in Hong Kong. I got the classics like egg tart, char Siu pork bun and pineapple bun. All good, slightly pricy but cute store where it was fully stocked.

John H.

Yelp
this is a food rating on the regular HK-style egg tart. It was surprisingly very bad. I bought a batch of a few and I think the egg custard was very inconsistent in that either the flavor was off (did not taste buttery or like vanilla). Some of them just tasted like straight up egg. You combine this with a bland pie crust and it really doesn't taste good! I hardly come here for egg tarts but I really hope that was just a bad batch or whoever prepared them that day did a bad job.
google avatar

Winn H.

Yelp
I stopped by Kee Wah while browsing the next door plaza. Haven't had pineapple buns, I stopped by for one to relieve nostalgia. The staff were nice and friendly thought not welcoming. It was an awkward experience walking in - maybe because they weren't sure if they should use English or Chinese. I eventually ordered in Cantonese, and everything was smooth sailing from there. I have to admit, though, the pineapple bun has me in a twist. The roasted pineapple top was crumbly, sweet, and tasty. However, the bread part tasted a bit stale or flaky - not something I enjoy too much.

Yelp
I came here to use the gift certificate that my mom got from her friend and every time I came, it was closed. I believe it was due to covid. Currently theyre open so you grab and go. They posted a big sign outside the store which is practically the menu with the price. You go in, theres also a smaller version (printer paper size) posted by the register and you just order verbally. Then the ladies working there will grab and ring you up. I didnt get the egg tarts because my mom didnt want any but she chose to get almost every one off the menu. Price is very reasonable, if not wrong, much cheaper than 85° or Sunmerry. Their selections are rather traditional picks over new/trendy pieces. My mom said she likes the bread here because its larger and cheaper, haha. I tried the pineapple bun and that big loaf of bread which I cant recall its name. It was pretty classic and satisfied my appetite. It definitely wasnt anything to wow but it met the standards. It was weird though because they rang up my mom's bread and it was below the gift certificate amount and they didnt even tell us that we can grab more. They said we just forfeit the rest of the amount and I was like what? So then later she let me grab more to meet/use everything that was left on the certificate. So note that you have to use ALL AT ONCE IN ONE TRANSACTION. Other than that, everything was fine.

Yelp
I love this bakery. The employees are really nice and the pastries are authentic like the ones in Hong Kong. I have tried a lot of the items here, but never tried their cakes. I come often to buy a few baked goods each time. They are made fresh everyday. It looks like there are more sweet options than savory. I haven't had any bad experiences. I was never a fan of moon cakes, but after hearing about the popularity of the mooncakes here, I decided to give it a try. That was when I realized mooncakes are not so bad after all. I think the ones that I tried are white lotus seed and red bean. Unfortunately, the inside is quite small and there is not much space to walk around. When mooncake season comes around, it can get very crowded and you will have to push pass people.

Yelp
So cute inside and yummy pastries. We had coconut cream bread and light bread cakes. So yummy

Yelp
When it comes to Chinese sweets and egg tarts, Kee Wah has been my go-to for many years. How many places out there offer not one, but three different varieties of egg tarts?! Besides their original egg tart, they also offer their signature crispy egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts. While I'm impartial to the original, the latter two are both so good you simply can't just order one. I've tried some of their breads such as the pineapple bun but none of them were all too memorable. From their bread section, the only repeat item I usually grab is their sponge cake which you can't go wrong with at a Chinese bakery. However, the cakes here at Kee Wah are delicious, especially their buttercream cake which comes with various choices of toppings such as sprinkles, nuts and other goodies. Due to pandemic times, they're currently only offering whole cakes or roll cakes but hopefully, they bring the cake slices back soon. Until then, since Christmas is around the corner, and with large gatherings restricted for the time being, it's the perfect excuse to order a whole Yule log cake all to yourself anyways. Kidding...or not.

Sabrina L.

Yelp
Great egg tarts here as well as baked goods. The bread is light and fluffy rather than dense and heavy. Staff was very friendly as well!

Yelp
First and last time buying cake here. Tried placing an order online for a Black Forest Cake. If you subscribe to their website, you get a 10% off promo code. We tried using the 10% off online but it wouldn't take the promo code so we called the store and they said to come in to redeem. We arrive to the store later that night. The cake was ready but they were unable to honor the promo code. No matter what we said, they wouldn't take it and the lady seemed like she might burst into tears so we said forget it. It wasn't worth the argument. To make matters worse, the cake sucked. It looked nothing like the picture (see my attached picture). Inside, there was hard cherry jello instead of cherries and the sponge was very dry and hard. I hated the cake. Sorry, you lost me a customer.

Yelp
They may have variety of sweets but I only come for egg tart! Wickedly delicious egg tart to your heart's content. They're even better after short few seconds in the oven toaster!

Yelp
Cute panda tote bags! My friend saw a photo of the cute panda tote bags that I bought from the Monterey Park location and asked me to get her one. Yes, I don't blame her... the bag is really cute. I gave one to my sister for Christmas! Other than that, the Chinese pastries here are just ok. I've had better Don tat (custard tarts). However, if I had to pick one of the three varieties of Don tat, I'd get the one with the crispy crust. The cute panda cookies were not remarkable in flavor. I guess that the other designs (dolphin, koala, and penguin) would taste the same. I would come back if I needed a quick snack if I were in the area. There was free parking on the street right in the front of the shop. The service was efficient and satisfactory. Nothing very memorable... just the panda tote bag and panda luggage tags!

Yelp
Pretty cheap for the bread (which isn't good), and pretty expensive for the packaged cookies and other non-bread (which weren't impressive). I heard from my Asian colleagues this place had very good egg tarts. They're okay, but I would pay almost the same for an egg tart from Paderia and get so much more buttery, flakey, and bigger tart.

Yelp
Came here to pick up some egg tarts for the fam. They have 3 variations. Im not a huge fan of sweets but I'd have to say their Portuguese egg tarts were pretty good. It wasn't overwhelmingly sweet or too eggy in flavor (in a bad sorta way). Didn't leave a bad aftertaste. Not bad for $2 a piece since they're pretty big, around 3in in diameter. The crust gave more of a light crunch (a little more dense) like a biscuit or soft cookie. It wasn't flaky and crumbly like the traditional chinese egg tarts.

Yelp
My family and I always struggle to find a birthday cake that we all love-- and I think I found our new regular spot. We got the 6" taro crispy cake and it was more than enough for 7 people. The taro layer was SO GOOD and the cake wasn't overly sweet. They also had a nice variety of fruit to top off the cake. Customer service was great-- I ordered the cake on Wednesday and picked it up on Thursday. The woman that helped me was also super friendly. Can't wait to come back and try their other cakes
