Got a reco on this place from someone on NextDoor. They raved about it. So, on Sunday of a 3-day weekend, I decided to try chicken and waffles for dinner. We tried a representative mix of the offerings. We would have gotten the peach cobbler - made from fresh peaches, if you believe their menu board. None was available.
Chicken is the star of the show here. I mean really good, old-school, little bit greasy but delicious chicken. The crust is outstanding. Not too much breading, not fatty, very moist. All of it: breast, thigh, leg and wings. The spice mix is unique, not overly spicy, just a nice hearty mix: salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, some chili powder. Not sure of what else. I could eat a lot of this chicken, it's less filling - and better tasting than most. Easy on the breading, strong on flavor, and nailing the moisture and crispness.
Other items are less successful. All meal orders get a free side, and cornbread muffins. The cornbread muffins are a bought out bagged mix. Made with water. Tasteless, dry... toss it. Nothings going to save it. The beans and rice... ok, not great. White rice and decently spiced chili-like beans. The collards are I think vegetarian - no bacon or lard or other down-South flavorings. Cooked to absolute tenderness, and held in a steamtable for longer than I want to think about. Somebody didn't get the memo on washing collards. So I got a few nice bites of sand in the greens. The waffle - we got a Red Velvet Waffle. The flavor was ok. More like a soft bread, or a cake with lots of pressed nooks and crannies. Not even a hint of crispy. The place is bordered by two auto-body shops and a taco place next door. Not a destination exactly. But that chicken.
