The Best Restaurants and Bars Near Portland’s Providence Park | Eater Portland

"One of Portland’s favorite Irish pubs, Kells, also operates its own brewery, pouring nitro stouts to sip alongside bowls of lamb stew or shepherd’s pie. All of the restaurant’s lamb is raised in the Pacific Northwest, which graze freely on the owner’s very own farm. The pub serves customers seven days a week, on a sunny outdoor patio or within cozy wooden booths indoors." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

12 Hardcore Portland-Area Brewpubs | Eater Portland

"Kells was opened in downtown Portland in 1990 by Gerard and Lucille McAleese, but in 2012 they opened a second location in Northwest and began brewing their own beer. In 2015, they hired Irish chef Dawn Farley, who revamped the menu to include classic Irish dishes with local ingredients from the Northwest — think: Irish stew or shepherd’s pie alongside pints of Irish stout or red ale. The vibe is really something special, as it feels both lively and chill at the same time. Downstairs, Kells features a cozy cigar lounge with single malt whiskeys to pair with a full list of cigars in the humidor for sale." - Ron Scott

I absolutely love this pub. This is a perfect place to hunker down and have a beer and a sausage roll. Cozy vibes and amazing, friendly stuff. I will definitely be coming here when the fireplace is roaring in the winter.

Stopped in for a pint, ended up ordering a flight first to try their different flavors. I'm a red ale guy and theirs was fabulous, a slight bit of herb/flowery to it, but the flavor satisfied all the check marks. Ordered the shepherds pie to split, it was a bit small for 2, but presentation and taste was very enjoyed. Next time, I want to go with the fish and chips, saw it being taken to another table and it looked great too.

Google
The busboy I believe his name was Roman was excellent at providing the best service and looked very attractive as well which gave this place an automatic 5 stars. Looking forward to getting a slice of that guy every time I come in. Great food too.

Google
A great place to drop in - great good, beers, and our Friday evening visit had live music! If you just need to slow life down a little and enjoy the end of the day, Kell's is the place.

I was visiting my brother in Portland a month ago. I brought my fiance and kids and we all happened to walk by while looking for a place to eat. We all got the burgers and my sons ate fries and bacon. I have not stopped thinking about my perfectly cooked medium rare burger 🥲 I always ask for my burger more rare than I would like because no one gets it right. Ever. Well imagine my surprise when they handed me a perfectly cook, juicy, plump burger. This will be the only place that I will eat when I come to Portland from now on. Other than that the fries and fry sauce were bomb. Properly seasoned, Everyone liked their drinks. We were there around 5pm and there weren't many people inside but it had warm vibe with all of the dark wood and tall velvet curtains and leather seats. The staff were nice and not annoying. The bathroom was clean. Really, all of the things you would want as a knit picky mother of young children. I felt like I could really breath, enjoy my meal and my family.

Google
Good vibes on a karaoke night. Place was festive with the decorations. Fish tacos have great flavor with a nice crisp. The salsa has good spice and flavor. Burger wasn't rare enough for her, but she did like the flavor. Fries are decent. Chicken Wings were good

Google
Red ale and pretzel were great, the staff was nice, and the patio was a relaxing place to enjoy the day.

Google
What a fun pre/post game environment for the Timbers/Thorns games. Plenty of options on tap. Love the Guinness and cider. The food is yummy and the friendly bar and wait staff make it so enjoyable. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Steve and I went to Kells Brewery a while back and we enjoyed it considerably! We had some French fries that they had on their food menu and really liked those. The dipping sauces that went with them were very good as well. I had their Blood Orange Wheat Beer for what was on their beer menu and liked it. It was nice and light bodied which we desired on that day. Flavors to look for withthe beer are citrus, fruitiness, strong flavors in general and a kind of grainy kind of flavor. The beer was super refreshing as when we were out a day about it was very hot on the day we were visiting Portland breweries.

Yelp
We happened to stop by on St Patty's day to get some Irish food for lunch. We found great street parking nearby (free on Sundays) and we were excited to go because we were hungry after walking around the Japanese garden nearby. I was appalled at the mandatory $20 a person "cover charge" to get in. After hearing that, I wanted to go somewhere else but my bf had his heart on eating here so he paid for it. The cover charge did not include anything except coming in. I saw a lot of people turn around because they didn't want to pay either. That being said, the food and service was great. You have to find your own table and it took about 20 minutes until we found one that opened up. We got the fish and chips which was delicious. The fish was melt in your mouth and the fries hot and crispy. While the food and ambience was great, the cover charge turned me off. I won't be coming back here.

Yelp
This brewery/restaurant is exactly what I think of when I think of "Irish pub." Tucked into a corner, just off a busy street but with a neighborhood feel. A little dark, mirrors and wood paneling, a long bar, lots of whiskey, and traditional Irish food. The waiter and bartender were both terrific, offering great service in addition to friendly conversation. We enjoyed fish and chips and a burger, drank a few great beers, and even purchased some merch. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I came to know about this Irish pub in a ghost tour. I actually captured some orbs in a series of pictures I won't share because they're spooky. I came back with my partner for dinner and drinks and it was the best because of the live music and libations!!! Their beer selection is great. They have an array of each type of beer. I always go for Heffs and I was happy with my choices. Service takes a minute but be mindful of how there were only a couple servers for the entire first floor. I can't complain since you wait while jamming to the live band!!! As for the food it was great. I got the standard sausage and mashed potatoes which came with a delicious sauce and my favorite: PICKLES!!! Not sure if they make their own sausage but it didn't have that processed taste. Definitely ordering this again!!! My partner had the fish and chips and he was happy. It came with a generous amount of string cut fries and three thinly breaded fish fillets. I tried a bite and it was crispy and perfectly fishy. I highly recommend this Irish pub for the beer selection, live music and the food!!!

Yelp
Kells is located at a convenient location on 21st street. They have a couple nice TVs at the bar which is nice for sports fans. They do have a happy hour but the beers are not featured on it. Atmosphere has been pretty quiet the few times that I have been in but I believe they have music on weekends. Beers were a little pricey. Food menu featured some Irish grub although I didn't try it. Would probably come more if they had some cheap beer offerings

Yelp
First time here but already a fan. Excellent beer, whiskey, and wings. Love the vibe too. The whiskey wall is classy and gives you lots of options: whether Irish, Scotch, Japanese, Bourbon, or even some Taiwanese. Staff are very knowledgeable as well. It was fun to ask about different Irish Whiskeys and learn. Really enjoyed Green Spot which was more nuanced than Red Breast IMO. Wings were very flavorful. Stout was delicious and perfectly poured. Glad to find a great local spot.

Yelp
I came to Portland for 2 weeks, and I'm sad I didn't discover this place earlier. Kells reminds me of the grander Irish pubs back home in New England, except that the food here is better. Ambiance is classic Irish pub, with a fantastic array of scotch, old school decor. Gotta love the older Irish gents at nearby tables, gathered around their brews, laughing at jokes they've probably told each other at least 13 times, yet laugh like it's their first time hearing it. Have to give a fantastic shout out to their sausage roll (the gravy is such a magical touch), and the amazeballs bangers and mash. It's been a while since I've had bangers that taste like the old country, and Kells did the ancestors proud! It went perfectly with the Guinness stout I ordered. Looking forward to more visits upon my return to Portland!

Yelp
Cute place for sure but nothing super special unless you're really craving Irish vibes. Beer was good, food was good - it was nice for a quiet Sunday afternoon. I will say the boneless wings were randomly super good!
google avatar

Yelp
I would most definitely recommend this place the atmosphere with an Irish vibe. The food is outstanding we had some small plates and shared and they all were very tasty my favorite was the butternut squash soup. They also have live music every night.

Yelp
After visiting Ireland, this was a pleasant treat to enjoy some traditional Irish fare. Love the ambiance, staff was accommodating, and food was delicious. Will definitely be back for another bowl of Lamb stew. Warms the soul and makes those cold days even better.

Yelp
I have been coming to Kells for years and it's always been a phenomenal bar with amazing food. However, I ordered the wedge salad today and it compelled me to redownload this app and give Kells a 5 star rating. Perfect portion size with fresh and delicious ingredients. Also must try the BBQ wings and the Kells Reuben. Insanely good food with impeccable service. You can tell the people who work here genuinely care about the business and it shows in the way they stop to chat with you and be friendly. Also a great spot pre or post Timbers match. Keep doing you Kells!

Yelp
Dropped in for a quick drink and to catch some premier league soccer. Looks like their draft beer is home-grown from Kells Brewery itself! Very cool selection, and not just a whole assortment of the mainstream beers you see around the area. Bartender was super chill and made for good service overall. Looks like they have an outdoor seating area out back, but the inside was fairly spacious, and nice to be in on those drizzly days!

Tom S.

Yelp
we went for an early lunch and was just given a one page menu. had to ask for the main menu. I ordered the bangers with hash browns it was awful as the hash browns came with green peppers and onions and I dislike them both and the menu did say it came that way. very sad.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Came in the day after the blizzard of '23.... Roads are iced but this place was open and I enjoyed my time here. Bartenders are chill and professional. Love the atmosphere and selection. Thank you for the hospitality...

Michelle B.

Yelp
Great fish and fries. Very decent price too. We only stopped for takeout. No regrets . We will be back to try other selections

Yelp
After getting reconnected to Kell's at a Yelp event, met friends here one night for happy hour. Since they are beer drinkers, this was the perfect place to have a few beers (them) and watch a game. I went with the cider on tap which was crisp and dry. We all got burgers and man, were they good! The large patty was juicy and cooked to perfection. Fries were crispy and plentiful. I'll be back just for that! One of my friends got the bangers and mash and said they were outstanding, the sausage had that outside crisp that makes it next level. The inside is old school pub with lots nooks and various seating arrangements, even a cozy fireplace. The bar is towards the back and there are about a dozen barstools there. Small free parking lot next door if you are lucky to get a spot otherwise street parking is available; download Parking Kitty for an easier experience.

Yelp
The BoH knocked it out of the park, and FoH was super pleasant to talk to. Ambiance was outstanding as always, and food was spectacular.

Yelp
I don't make it out to Kell's (any of their locations) as much as I'd like. This particular Kell's, out in NW off 21st street, is my wife's favorite go-to location for St. Patrick's Day festivities, which is a bit of a double-edged sword. As expected for their showcase holiday event, it was packed to the gills, even though we're just coming out of mask mandates, so the experience comes with some...inherent risks. That said, we're about as prepared as anyone can be, immunology-wise, and it's about time we started returning to normal. If we don't, we never will. The $20 cover netted us entry, plus a couple of sweet Kell's t-shirts. The 21st avenue location features a covered auxiliary tent for capacity spillover, meaning the main dining area is pretty much standing room only, and barely that. We wanted to enjoy the live music (a staple at Kell's, even during regular weekdays and weekends), so we waded into the throng, hoping to find a place to sit...a tall order, in and of itself! Snagging a table during a premier event requires vigilance, patience and assertiveness, but after about an hour, we managed to grab one, and ordered food and drinks. It's a foregone conclusion that my wife will order the Corned Beef & Cabbage on St. Patty's, and myself, having had some for lunch, pivoted to my other perennial favorite, the Shepherd's Pie. Incredibly, despite the overwhelming mass of humanity ordering food and drinks at the same time, our entire order manifested at our table within 15 minutes. A jealousy-inspiring portion of corned beef landed, hot and fresh, in front of my wife, but my Shepherd's Pie was satisfying enough to keep me from stealing more than a bite or two (at least until she became full, at which time, it became ALL MINE)! Two-for-one! Heck yes! There were, of course, a few nitpicks here and there: the mashed potatoes in my Shepherd's Pie seemed a little on the cold and hard side, likely having sat idle for a while before being utilized. Considering the amount they must have had to make to prepare for their most popular holiday, that's not surprising. I'd also say that the cocktails I ordered were a tad on the anemic side, but that is also not normal, and likely a result of the event. Knocking even one star off of Kell's rating, because of a couple minor hiccups, due to the swarming chaos of their St. Patty's Day event, would be unjust. Any day of the week, this is a four-clover, five star pub, and being able to pull of such an overwhelming event as successfully as they have, requires a degree of skill (and luck) that only the Irish possess!

Yelp
Great beer! Wonderful Irish pub feel. Welcoming service. And classic Irish food. A welcome neighborhood haunt.

Yelp
Only had drinks Four stars for ambiance and cool bartender waitress this evening - 'the closer'. Irish coffee was ok No sugar rim Irish lager is a favorite of someone in our group. Holiday decor and big fireplace makes this place a solid four for me Way better than the seattle market Kells. Still in the family though ...

Yelp
I always enjoy coming to Kell's. It's a special treat to relax and partake in Irish food with a Guinness or as yummy cocktail. Kell's is pretty consistent and one of my go-to places for comfort food. It's usually pretty fast to get a seat and, though the service wasn't great this last time, it's usually pretty good. As a pescatarian, I normally gravitate toward the fish and chips (though I do with this location had the Irish nachos like the one on 2nd because those are amazing) and I enjoy a Kell's Old Fashioned. This time I went with a whiskey and ginger beer drink from their specials that I can't remember the name of. While it was good, I'll stick to my usual next time. It's a great place to get drinks with friends, have a relaxing night out, or if there's a game going they can put it up on the TVs so you can watch and sip a beer. I'll definitely be back and I recommend you check it out too!
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
I came here to drink their beer. I DID. it was all good to OK.... nothing was mind blowing in the beer front but nothing was bad either. The service was great and fast... thank you! Environment was Celtic bar so lots of wood and a whiskey wall, which is nice. Overall it's a nice spot. When i return, I'll focus on whiskey drinks!

Yelp
It's been some time since I had been to an indoor dining establishment that has had live music. It feels like it's been years. Oh yeah.... It has :( It was a busy night on this Friday evening. Guitarist at the stage and a line at the bar. It took a few minutes to get sat as there wasn't a sign if we were suppose to wait or seat ourselves. When we were finally sat it took several more minutes to get a menu. This is where the 1 star was lost. Outside of that the food was great. My wife and I had a fish and chips and an corned beef stew and 2 beers. The food was the right amount of comfort. The meat was tender and the potatoes were solid.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Had to go in since I love beer and the wife's name is Kelley. Wish they did flights of beer but 2 half pours did the trick. Daughter like the sour, I enjoyed the fresh hop ipa and tropical hazy ipa. Great experience and enjoyed snagging some branded items to take home.

Diane W.

Yelp
Love the sausage roll. Tried the whiskey wings this time and they were great. Always great food with fair portions and very friendly staff. A must stop if I'm in town.

Yelp
What a top notch place to come to enjoy the Semi Finals World Cup Soccer match. The wait staff was awesome. You never had to ask for anything they just knew what you needed. There for every little detail. The Pilsner and stouts were cold, the burgers juicy and HUGE! I never saw so much protein packed into a burger. Plus fresh veggies and delicious soft buns. Oh did I mention the two orders of sweet potato fries we devoured? There are TVs set up at every angle of the bar so no one is cranking their necks to watch the match. I highly recommend Kells on 23rd. Great neighborhood sports bar.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Solid Irish pub with your basic bar and bottles of hard alcohol. There was a Notre Dame football game being shown on the televisions. Great vibe and the staff was very attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
First time at Kell's and I will definitely be back! Service was friendly and fast and food was delicious and arrived quickly. I ordered the wild caught salmon which was delish and perfectly cooked. It was also beautifully plated as Tina, the bartender promised it would be. Mango & guava sour was also yummy.
google avatar

Courtney A.

Yelp
Such a great place to grab a bite to eat and relax. Great bloody Mary's too. Service can be really great or (at times) non-existent but the atmosphere and food make up for it.

Emme D.

Yelp
We had a great time at Kells! The food was killer and the vibes were awesome. What really sold us was Jake, our waiter, who was super helpful, informative and fun! We were a large group, but he managed us well. I would definitely recommend! 10/10

Fatima S.

Yelp
My favorite place to take friends visiting Portland. Highly recommend coming on a Friday evening because they have life karaoke as well. The food is really good and the staff is very kind.

Yelp
So we were downtown and found the bigger Kelly's there was closed. So we made the short drive to the uptown location. Parking can be an issue if you are a visitor (park around the corner at Fred Myers). This place is small but has an amazing bar inside and great seating outside. Beers were so good Irish Red Ale amazing. Food off the charts good. They put a lot of effort into the food. I was nervous at first as there was only one person working as hostess and server. She was so attentive and gave us great selections on our meals. We would highly recommend this place.

Patricia A.

Yelp
I was in Kells on 21st on September 29 had a medical incident and the staff treated me with arrogance , disrespect and unethically. I was banned from the restaurant. What they did was completely wrong. Needless to say my friends and I will not set foot in their establishment.
google avatar

Mason B.

Yelp
Best customer service in Portland! Stopped in for a bite to eat and a beer and was delighted with the whole place. This place has the aesthetic of a classic Irish pub, lots of outdoor seating and great food and great beer. I tried the fries and the sausage roll and both were delicious and perfect portion size. I also tried out the Kells Lager, which will bite you a little at first but it makes up for it later, and the Kells Red which was soooo good. The bartender was charming and efficient and the experience overall was great. Definitely worth a stop and definitely worth coming back!
google avatar

Glyde H.

Yelp
I came at the crack of noon to watch a Champions League game. Was able to teach my last class of the day remotely from my table, while watching the game. Sweet potato fries were yummy and I took some home for later. Gas fire was blazing. Very cozy and welcoming. Highly recommend. Wish they opened earlier for EPL games!

Brittany S.

Yelp
I went here with my partner the other day. We had a service dog with us and chose to sit outside. The staff at Kells made us feel so welcome, we felt at home. The service, food and drinks are exceptional! We will definitely be back. Thank you for being so kind to those with disabilities.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't wait to return to Kell's Brewery for a complete meal an grog! Their amber ale is outstanding and will pair perfectly with Bangers or Shepherd's Pie, which they serve both, but I have yet to try. I attended a special event and both hubby and I enjoyed all we tasted. We'll be back!

fdsfgsg d.

Yelp
Best place for Guinness and fish and chips. If you love fried fish and McDonald fries, this is the place!
google avatar

Ellen M.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Irish food! I highly recommend the corned beef and cabbage! Fun atmosphere too.

Yelp
It was nice and quiet.... More guys here than females ‍ had the blood orange ale and it was good
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
This is our go-to place for a burger. Ok, sometimes for Irish stew or shepherd's pie, too. But our standard is the burger w/ sweet potato fries. Always pleasant waitstaff, lovely fireplace, big-screen tv if you like that sorta thing (we watched the tributes to Franco Harris today, which was moving). Sorry I can't help y'all w/ reviews of beer or whiskey. And sorry I didn't post a pic of the burger, but we were hungry.
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
Definitely recommend. Came in the day after Christmas, one rockstar lady working the bar and I have to say, she was amazing - she managed front of house with apparent ease - taking food orders, drink orders, delivering food to tables etc. We stopped by early afternoon, ordered a couple pints of Guinness, some sweet potato fries and the sausage rolls. Food came out in decent time and was tasty, beers were delish, atmosphere was good. They have an open fireplace which at the moment is perfection.
google avatar

Paula S.

Yelp
We sat at the very impressive bar and enjoyed a beer. I had the Pilsner, which was somewhat different but very good. It tasted mildly nutty -- hazelnut maybe? B had a fresh hop IPA which he pronounced excellent. We didn't eat here, but the menu looks like great pub food. Another time, perhaps.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
3 of us went and LOVED it. The shepherds pie is PERFECT! Going back just for that! The lamb stew was OK, more more soup than stew since it had more of a broth base. We had an apple crumble that was completely smothered in cream, so it lost its "crumble", but it tasted good. We had some warm conversation with the the owner's son (I think he said his father opened the place or one in Seattle?). Staff was also super friendly.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I've been here a few times but probably don't come here as often as I would like. I enjoy the atmosphere which is pretty chill. The service is friendly and super available. I love how cozy the place is and the great decor. Their beer is great. I'm one of those hop heads that has hopped himself almost into oblivion, and I was suspect I would find beer here that I would like. However, I regained my romance with the ESB and stout here. Their ESB is especially amazing. Best craft US one I've had! I didn't really like their fresh Hop one but had it anyway due to my fresh hop fanaticism. They generally have good food, though I've only had an appetizer and a soup. Both were tasty though! Worth checking out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
This is a very cool Irish Brewery and Pub. I came in here during happy hour and enjoyed a couple of lagers and some eats. I had the boneless whiskey wings for $5 and the Irish nachos at $5 as well if I remember correctly. The crisp lagers were only $4 a pop. The lager was quite refreshing on the warm evening I visited, and the boneless wings tasty. They were a little over sauced for my taste, but the whiskey sauce was very good. The white chicken meat inside was tender and the breading crunchy. The Irish nachos were not what I actually expected, being that they were house made potato chips rather than potato skins, but they were tasty. The chips were well made and seasoned. They had a good crispiness about them. They came topped with sour cream, black olives, chopped tomatoes, green onions, melted cheese, and red onions. The only thing missing from these chips were some chopped bacon! Where's was the bacon peeps? I recommend they put some on. Service was pretty standard. It was friendly and not rushed, but I did have to flag down the fellow to pay our bill which was no big issue.

Yelp
A gem! So many places in Portland to grab a beer, but none quite like this authentic Irish Pub with its low key, warm and friendly, relaxing vibes. The crowd is always just enough and great, and the service is excellent. And while they are famed for their brews (this location being the actual brewery), they also have an excellent selection of irish whiskey and last but not least - amazing food. A short but carefully selected list of appetizers, mains and sandwiches - we've pretty much tried everything here and the food is the biggest triumph calling us back here time and time again. The Reuben, the Mama Mac, the BLTC, the Curry ... And yes, even the burger - all so good! Definitely our favorite spot here in the city!

Regan P.

Yelp
This is a great spot. I like the vibes and location amazing drinks good company. Not super upscale place but cool enough to enjoy myself and not a dump or dive either. Recommend it.

Randy E.

Yelp
Loved the cocktails made with the house liquors (McMenimans). Great service and good food. We liked the atmosphere, smelled like they had a real wood fireplace or something going on, and the chairs were comfortable!

Yelp
My friend who was visiting from out of town was craving beef stew after being out in the cold rain all day. I wasn't sure where we could go but she found this location and so we decided to check it out. We called in the order while driving in and when we got there we just had a few more minutes to wait. We spoke to the owner who was incredibly nice. The inside of this location was decorated for Christmas and it was so super pretty! I felt like I was in a Hallmark movie. It was well done and not cheesy at all. I ended up ordering the shepherds pie. We took them home to enjoy with beers we already had on hand. Both my friend and I were more than pleased with our orders. I definitely could use that again on a snowy day like today! Additionally if you're looking to eat out, they had a little tent area set up outside so that would be a great spot to check out! I knew this location existed down near the waterfront but had no idea about this other location. I'd definitely come back here!
