"The history of this magnificent country mansion overlooking the Idrijca river valley dates back to the 14C. Today, the building houses a warm and elegant restaurant, with stylish rooms for winter dining and a beautiful terrace for the summer. The cuisine is traditional and full of authentic flavours, featuring two tasting menus – Katarina (fish) and Jakob (meat). We recommend the latter, especially if it includes the delicious “bati and bakalca” (steamed bread dough and lamb goulash). The entire wine list is dedicated to Slovenia, with all wines available by the glass – the Štemberger Malvazija is particularly good. Charming guestrooms complete the picture." - Michelin Inspector

MICHELIN Guide Slovenia : Boutique hotels with top-notch restaurants

"An attractive 5-star hotel done out in traditional style with a romantic atmosphere, this former Kendov family stronghold built circa 1377 pairs nostalgic charm with bespoke service and a restaurant that anchors the experience. I arrive to a picturesque barn and a charming painted house, then take in garden views over Idrija framed by the Alps and the limestone rocks of the Karst Plateau; inside, an old suit of armour, sepia photographs, lace doilies, and a low-ceilinged hiša living room with a green-tiled stove, old benches, and waxed floorboards set a warm, classical tone that continues upstairs in guestrooms with solid wood furniture, oriental rugs, and Murano glass chandeliers. In the light-filled dining room, long-time chefs Franci Pivk and Klavdij Pirih respectfully treat local culinary traditions while reinterpreting them, sourcing vegetables from the hotel garden, fruit from the orchard, cheese from the nearby Poljanska Valley, trout from the Trebuščica River, and valley-raised meats—especially lamb—reflecting their early embrace of slow food. Signature dishes include žlikrofi (pasta filled with potato and bacon), bakalca (lamb shoulder cooked with diced vegetables and white wine), ajmoht (a broth with white meat), and the famous štruklji; the menu changes daily for hotel guests, and the wine list showcases Slovenian bottles from Primorska, the Vipava Valley, and Goriška Brda alongside local craft beers, a rich variety that never fails to delight when dining here." - Le Guide MICHELIN

Hotel Kendov Dvorec (Spodnja Idrija, Goriška) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"You’re not going to just happen across the 12th-century Slovene village of Spodnja Idrija, but it’s worth going out of your way when you know a hotel like Kendov Dvorec awaits at the end of the road. In its early days — records go back to 1377 — it was a country manor, and though the village has filled in around it, it still feels splendidly secluded, surrounded by gardens, lawns, and apple trees. Today it’s a classic small luxury hotel, with an old-world atmosphere that feels untouched by the passage of centuries, and an elegant restaurant that specializes in Idrija’s local culinary traditions, including trout from the Trebušica river." - Tablet Hotels

My wife loved this hotel, finding it warm and charming. I thought it needed some updating/renovations as it seemed a bit tired. Friendly staff, good breakfast buffet. To me, a very good 4 star hotel, not my type of 5 star hotel.

Wonderful hotel in a beautiful small town. The dinner was absolutely exceptional. We loved the Slovenian wines. Would love to return again some day.

Wonderful picturesque place to stay in, great view from a large room! The breakfast and dinner are also equally fantastic. Would love to be back someday.

We stayed here for 5 nights as a base to explore the region, but unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. • Our attic room had a lovely view of the village, but it was dark and poorly designed. The air conditioning unit was placed right under the window, making it impossible to use it without keeping the curtains open, not ideal during hot summer days. • The bathroom roof window had a curtain that fell down daily, which became annoying. • There was no kettle or coffee/tea setup in the room, you have to order tea via room service. • Service throughout our stay felt indifferent and uninterested. Despite it being included in our booking confirmation, no welcome drink was offered. • Breakfast was minimal and repetitive every day: standard croissants with powdered sugar, no local touches or variation. The only highlight was a small jar of what seemed to be local honey. • The room had cookies, but they weren’t local or organic, a missed opportunity for something authentic or thoughtful. • We chose not to dine at the hotel due to the underwhelming breakfast and lack of attention to detail. Overall, the hotel lacks passion and hospitality. For €190 per night, we expected a much higher standard and a more welcoming experience. Sadly, we wouldn’t recommend it.

We stayed two nights at this beautiful property. The first night we had a great dinner, attentive service, and the nice touch of a turndown service in the room. The next night we didn’t have dinner and it felt like a different experience. When we got back to the hotel after a long day away, there had been no turndown service and we found it difficult to get the attention of any staff to get a drink. Even staff we’d chatted with the previous day didn’t acknowledge us. It felt a little awkward. When we checked out no one asked us about our stay, but we did leave feeling glad to have spent time here even if we might have preferred just one night with dinner.

Staying at Kendov Dvorec felt like living in a fairytale. The service was warm and attentive, the room elegant and comfortable, and dinner was outstanding, especially with the local wine. A truly unforgettable experience!

We were able to enjoy a wonderful and heartwarming stay at Kendov Dvorec. Very emotional was our dog's last night on earth. She was very ill and we went there for a cozy and quiet atmosphere. She visited us during our fine dinner and was happy to get a little bit of the delicacies. A huge thank you to the whole team, it will remain in our hearts as a unforgettable farewell.
