"Kennedy's takes the English concept of a typical pie and mash shop to another level. Not only do they serve fish & chips, the best being wing of skate and fish with a pickled cucumber, but you can also choose from steak and stilton pies, venison and red wine, and salmon and tarragon pasties."

Visited as part of a coach trip. Considering how many of us there were, the food was lovely. Hot and a good size portion. Not at all greasy. Would highly recommend

The Best fish and chips in angel area! They always fry their chips and fishes in the fresh oil. Fishes' batter wass crispy and thin, fish was cooked well done. The most important thing was fish and chips weren't like sponge 🧽 (it wasn't oily)

Got multiple items in the order wrong! That’s the main issue! Ordered through Deliveroo and the fish was not the fish I ordered. I ordered a regular haddock only to get what I believe was regular cod. Now, I’m not a fish expert, but I’ve had enough fish and chips over my time to be able, I believe, to tell the difference. Haddock usually has a slightly sweet taste and isn’t as flaky as cod. Cod tends to be more mild and breaks apart more easily. And what I got definitely seemed more like cod. To be fair to the restaurant, the price difference was nothing both cost £12.75 on Deliveroo and the quality, I thought, was decent. The fish was cooked perfectly, no complaints there. But still, I can’t give it top marks when it wasn’t the correct fish. Secondly, the gravy was very watery and also incorrect. I ordered onion gravy, not just gravy. And I received just standard gravy. Again, we’re talking about minor issues, but I think it matters. Unlike the fish, which had redeeming qualities (because it was cooked very well), the gravy was very basic. You could tell it wasn’t homemade very watery and probably from a packet or tub. Now, don’t get me wrong, the gravy wasn’t bad or unpleasant, but it was extremely watered down and clearly not homemade. Not worth £2.50 at all. Considering it wasn’t the best and wasn’t homemade, I’d say it was probably worth only £1 or £1.50 at most. £2.50 for this sort of gravy is simply overpriced. Then coming onto the chips but chips were good to a large extent but slightly, ever so slightly, on the hard side. Could’ve done with just 30–40 seconds more cooking time. But honestly, chips seemed like the best thing in the meal. My drink and peas were nothing amazing, but it was Coke and peas to be fair, I wouldn’t expect anything crazy there. Both perfectly fine and acceptable. Scores! Fish: Had I ordered the cod, I would’ve given it a 4.5/5 or close to a 5. It was cooked very nicely. But I didn’t order cod. I ordered haddock. That’s got to be at least 1 mark removed. So, 3.5 out of 5. Onion Gravy (main side/dipping sauce): Going to be harsh here but 2 out of 5. Not only wrong, but watery, and clearly not homemade. Chips: 4 out of 5. I think the chips were good and yes, could’ve done with that 30–40 seconds longer, but they were still nice, soft and fluffy with a good outer coating. Speed my order arrived: 3 out of 5. Food was prepared and got here quickly, but maybe too quick? Was it properly verified before being handed to the delivery partner? Clearly not, as the fish wasn’t what I ordered and the gravy was also wrong. And let’s say maybe the restaurant didn’t have the items in stock and that’s no excuse. No phone call was made by the restaurant to check if the substitutes were acceptable. I think that’s important because it shows a lack of care. What if I was allergic to cod? I’m not, but that’s not the point. People can be allergic to different things in food and in life in general, and it’s the restaurant’s duty to follow the order correctly and fulfil it correctly. If they can’t, then it’s their responsibility to either substitute correctly or check with the customer first. So that’s why I am giving that a 3 out of 5. Yes, it got to me quick, was warm and arrived in good condition, but I can’t ignore glaring issues. Overall these things knock it down a lot. Overall = 12.5 out of 20 Average = 3.1 out of 5 Not the worst experience, but definitely frustrating when basic order accuracy is missing. Could’ve been much better with just a little more care.

I’m so glad I stopped here! I had fish and chips and a meat pie left for my main English dishes I wanted to try, and this place popped up. I told the lady what I was looking for and she said she’d do the fish and chips and add what we meat pie I wanted. I asked for her suggestion and she said the minced meat and onion, and it sounded good to me. When the food came out, it looked amazing. The breading on the fish was light and crispy, and the fish was flaky and delicious. The chips (fries for my fellow Americans) were thick cut and crispy. The meat pie was my favorite. The way the bake it in the dough, and the perfect texture offset by the flavorful filling was just fantastic. I also ordered their baby squid as a recommended appetizer and it was meh. Not worth the price. Just chewy and flavorless. My main problem overall is the lack of seasoning. I think it’s a general English thing, but the food just doesn’t have seasoning on it. I was told later by a couple friends that you add your own salt and pepper to taste. I’m Hispanic and I’m used to the core 4 being in almost all dishes (aside from additional seasonings), onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. But the food was cooked to perfection and delicious (except the squid, not worth the cost). Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for meat pies or fish and chips!

Google
Valued for the money. I think it's an underrated fish and chips restaurant. One of my favourite in the area! They have a proper sitting area and music licence. Tasty food and very good prices! Highly recommended.

Google
I love everything about this place. I was looking specifically for GOOD fish and chips and I got GREAT fish and chips. The service was fantastic and the restaurant itself was super cute on the inside. This is definitely getting logged in the “go to” places for London. My husband loved the burger as well.

Freshly cooked seafood with nice dips. Service is warm and quick. Vibe is very homey and you can see customers are local which is a good sign.

Google
I have been coming to this place for a long time. They serve some of the best fish and chips in London in my opinion! You can sit in, takeaway or get a delivery. The restaurant is lovely to sit in, though it can get very busy with coach tours and cab drivers. The staff are lovely, the food is really nice and the portions are generous. I visit regularly and I still love it though there has been some changes to the menu and some of my favourite dishes are no longer there. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
No wonder this is a locals hang out. Fish and chips are an art form here. Best I've ever had. The beans and pickles were just right as a compliment to everything. So good!

Yelp
Awesome wings and Irish stew!!! One evening we stopped by for a pint and there was live music which was great!!

Yelp
The fried fish here is good. It's lightly battered and the fish flesh falls off in chunks. I honestly wasn't a fan of their chips.... It was different compared to what I'm normally used to, but couldn't put my finger on what was different. The steak and onions pie was ok. So stick with the fried fish. Overall, 3.5, fish alone is 4 stars.

Yelp
Kennedy's, which is established 1877, was recommended to me and my friend by someone who has been here before and let me tell you - it did not disappoint. Just the opposite - the food and service is simply amazing here. The restaurant is relatively small. Right next to it is the cafe - to-go part where you just order for to go from practically the same menu. But I recommend you sit in the restaurant area. It is air conditioned and the place is nice and cozy. I ordered the Sea Bream from their Grilled Fresh seafood menu. Also I ordered the twist potato. My friend ordered the sea bass. Both plates also came with regular fries (chips) and a salad. The fish was freshly made on the grill and tasted amazing. I tried both dishes. The potatoes were fresh too, and tasted great. I highly recommend the grilled sea food here. It's simply amazing. This is fish and chips the way it's supposed to be!

Yelp
Went there with colleagues and had a good time. The food was delicious and service was good. I had the cod and chips, the sauces were good too. Will come back to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
We enjoyed our delicious, generous, reasonably price, with great service at this place, All the seafood dishes we tried were delicious. The interesting is although they were fried, they tasted healthy and no oily fried taste at all.

Yelp
Fish cod is fresh, but batter bland and chips soggy. Note two adjoining takeaway outlet with single small table, and dine-in outlet with accompanying VAT.

Yelp
This place was fabulous! Best food we've had our entire stay in Paris and Lindon. Huge portions, excellent service, and reasonably priced. The service by Elsa was so personable I even remembered her name! We rented a place upstairs and ate there 4 times. We had the fish and chips, steak, and fish plate. Ask for your steak rare if you are wanting medium rare though. The waitress even helped us find a cab. You have to try their home made tarter sauce. Delicious!

Yelp
Wow. This is one of the best fish and chips in LONDON--possibly the world! It is at least the best fish and chips that I have ever had. My husband came home with a craving for fish and chips and I knew immediately where to take him. I have visited the takeaway shop a few times, but this was my first visit to the restaurant. The restaurant is very laid back and has an East London feel--despite being in Central. It was quite busy when we were there (Friday evening), but we were seated immediately. The space is quite small so the tables are small and jammed together. This isn't exactly a romantic restaurant, but that was fine with us. It was VERY loud as they had the sound on the TV on plus all the other dinners. However, the food made up for all the decor flaws. For 10GBP you get a beautifully fried fish and chips. We ordered a few sides: gherkins, coleslaw, pickled onions. It was all very good. You have to order tartar sauce, which is helpful to know before ordering as I had expected it to be included. Overall, the food was mind-blowingly good and all at a great price.

Yelp
Haven't eaten fish and chips in London for ages and came here randomly with colleagues after work as we wanted to try something more simple, cheap and quick The place itself is quite plain inside but we liked the simplicity of the place. It's lively and the staff are very helpful, so what else could you ask for after work I ordered the cod and chips which is the standard fare. It again did the job. Good value for money for £9.95, fresh, tasty, massive portion and not greasy or soggy....perfect fish and chips which satisfys your mind when it says "I fancy fish and chips tonight" If you want simple fish and chips which is good quality without paying Gastropub prices, this place is perfect. A Good place to take friends from overseas to try traditional good quality British fish and chips

Yelp
Their fish and chips are excellent! Some of the best we've had in London! Very reasonable prices, too!

Yelp
Food is always great. NEVER disappointed. Tonight Just Eat kept me waiting for a long time but the restaurant called me and came to me (disabled) themselves. Absolutely BRILLIANT!

Yelp
We are visiting London, and staying here in the Shoreditch area. With two teenaged sons in tow, finding a place that suits us all is rare - and frankly, we're tired of dining out every night (especially the kids). We found Kennedy's last night. There is a sit down restaurant on the left, and a take-out shop on the right. The service in the take-out shop was fabulous. We arrived around 19:00 and they were out of a lot of the pies, but we grabbed a couple of Chicken and Mushroom pies and they were really good - and only £3.20 each! They did not have salmon on their take-out menu, but we saw it on their dine-in menu and asked if they could make a grilled salmon with chips to go - the answer was YES! Finally, we ordered the steak (again with chips). Total bill - £25. Give this place a visit if you're here in the area. We highly recommend it, especially for families.

Yelp
Having read Dos Hermanos' review of Kennedy's in February, I was understandably sceptical about the quality of food they serve from their credit-crunch busting £5 lunch menu. But hunger normally overrides my doubts so I was easily persuaded to try it last Monday. I am glad I did, for this is the bargain of the year. Five English pounds will not only get you a humongous cod and chips but a cup of tea or glass of house wine to boot. I think someone at Kennedy's has a keen eye for blog rants, as all of the problems the Iberian duo identified had been addressed. Cod was deliciously flaky and succulent, with light, crispy and bubbly batter. Chips were chunky and well cooked, with almost no residual grease. If fish and chips can ever be the healthy option, Kennedy's are pioneers in the field. The restaurant is modern and simple and service was efficient and friendly. Although Kennedy's have stiff competition locally - from the Golden Fish Bar and the Fryers Delight to name a few - the £5 menu is not to be sniffed at. I left feeling full and flush; just the start to a new week in the City.

Yelp
My no. 1 address for authentic Fish & Chips!!!! Very friendly staff and fair prices for their huge portion of fish and chips! Tip: If you're a party of two, share the fish and chips and an order of the grilled baby squid!

Yelp
Gorgeous fish and chips ! Terrific takeaway service Great food and a excellent service. Some days it is really crazy in there but well worth the wait . I had skate with a mega portion of chips and it was YUM!

Yelp
Probably the best fried fish I've had (cod), but the chips are a little hit or miss. They get a little soggy in the bag.. Service is quick and helpful.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Maybe I'm not a fish and chips kind of guy, but wasn't blown away by Kennedy's. Friendly service, moist large hunk of cod, but found my fish and chips meal expensive for what I got. Chips were overly oily and soggy. My search for tasty fish and chips in London goes on!

Yelp
Craving fish n chips whilst back in London for a holiday, choose this place over the street food that on offer on a Friday lunchtime, cod and chips was quite ok but ordered calamari for my son, was very overcooked, hard greasy and calamari looked freezer burnt. Coleslaw only £1, mayo overload! Weird thing was that I ordered a cider, then told they were out of that brand, opted for a beer which was delivered warm, as I was paying for the meal I noticed the fridge was stocked with the cider I asked for in the first place. Maybe they were super busy, staff were nice enough but was a joke trying to pay the bill? Maybe I should have gone for a pie, but not what I came for....

Lynn S.

Yelp
We went for early dinner last Tuesday night. We were the only people in the restaurant. I ordered the barbecue chicken with potatoes and salad. First the waitress acted like we were a bother and basically only took our order and served our food. My meal was a dry piece of chicken with no sauce of any kind, over boiled potatoes and shaved lettuce. It was inedible. Probably the worst meal I have had in years.

Yelp
Good quality fish and chips. Always fresh, real chips and good mushy peas. Grilled fish available plus a good selection of other classic fish. Take away or eat in pleasant suroundings pleasant service.

Yelp
As other people have said, this place is seriously cheap. My children and I decided to check it out after a recommendation from a friend who eats there at least twice a week. Kennedy's offers both a take away counter section and a sit-down restaurant with daily specials and we chose the latter. For £6 (at lunch), you get a huge piece of cod, massive pile of chips, and mushy peas. The food is delicious and the fish stayed crisp even after I topped it with copious amounts of malt vinegar. While known as a fish & chips place, they also offer meat pies and other items and have a kids' menu (a London rarity).

Yelp
Great place to have my first fish and chips. Paired with a brew and it was tasty. Sit by the windows and people watch as well. Downside? Service wasn't fast or that friendly, bummer.

Yelp
Great value lunchtime deals quality batter on fresh fish and perfect chips. Oh and a glass of vino. Superb place to get your fix far superior to flyers delight based on my most recent visits

Yelp
First of all, this is place is seriously cheap - in a good way of course! The amount of food you get for the price you pay is insane for London standards! The restaurant has a great bustling vibe with a little outdoor seating area, which is great for people watching at the markets! There are always a number of staff on hand so they're never swamped (which is perfect as this place gets pretty busy!) The food is pretty good and just like mum and dad used to make it! Very rustic, very tasty, very affordable!

Yelp
Big fan. Family of five and everyone walked away happy; from the seafood averse to the very picky, to the omnivores in our household. Great for kids - comes with desert and the service was very friendly. Reasonably priced; a big plus in this town. The best fish and chips I've had so far in London.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Much cheaper than the fish and chips offered in other restaurants, very suitable for those having a budget. The quality is very good too. Highly recommended.

Yelp
At the corner of Goswell and Lever Street (just look for sea of the black cabs parked out front), Kennedy's has only been around a relatively short while, but the space had been a fish and chip shop under different ownership for years before. A takeaway entrance and a spacious dining room with fairly friendly table service provide opportunities for a mad dash (there always seems to be a takeaway queue anytime of the day but it does move quickly) or a proper sit down. And with forearm sized portions of fish, platefuls of whitebait and plenty of other London caff and chippy menu options, it's a good place to consider when you want to linger over some old school comfort food, eavesdrop on cabbie convos and pretend the gentrified parallel street (and universe) of St John Street doesn't exist.

Yelp
Had dinner here with a friend who has relocated to London while I was visiting for business. Got the classic Cod fish and chips, with mushy peas. I thought it tasted great and the portion was enormous. We came a little early for London - a little before 6pm, but we had a quiet table all to ourselves until almost 8 on a Wednesday night which was great.

Sarah R.

Yelp
The food was very good. We ate in the restaurant (as opposed to getting the food to go). My husband and I split the cod and chips. Our friends split the haddock and chips. The portions were plenty to feed two people. We were there for lunch but they serve dinner as well. The service was good also.

Qype User (jayint…)

Yelp
Easily some of the best fish and chips in east london! They have a takeaway counter service so you can walk in to grab some quick dinner to take home... or there is a lovely restaurant for them next door which the old bill love to frequent, scary the first time you see a riot van outside... now it more giving a friendly wave! Great food and a good service, however 6pm on a Friday night there will more than likely be a queue out the door!

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
I studied abroad in London in the spring and lived down the block of Kennedy's and always saw it crowded so I decided to give it a try one day and I'm so glad I did. The cod is juicy and flaky- not dry like some other places. Also, the size of the fish is quite large, and they provide an ample amount of chips too! The prices are really affordable, especially with the quantity of food they provide. The lunch specials are SUPERB, five pounds includes a choice from a LONG LIST of entrees and a drink! I strongly recommend the pies as well, the meat is tender, and the gravy is oh so delicious. I returned many a times after my first for more Kennedy's!

Yelp
Love, love , love this place! The staff greet you and seat you straight away. The food can't be beaten and the prices are even better! Very exstensive menu aswell so something for everyone.

Yelp
We are in the white cross restaurant. Worst food ever had to wait 30 mins for fish and chips and chicken casserole was awful. This consisted of 3 measly pieces of chicken with 3 little carrots and 2 shrivelled olives. Staff rude and unhelpful too. Poor value for money. Avoid.
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
My first impression is very good it had a nice decoration but the toilets are a bit dirty. The fish was crispy and the chips are so tasty they are not french fries!!

Jane E.

Yelp
Very sceptical since I've been disappointed many times with different 'fish and chips' elsewhere. This is the best I have ever had, apart from my dear mum's. Chips were made of real potato, hunky sized, piping hot and crispy. Loads of them too. A large was enough for 3 of us. The cod was succulent with a crispy light batter - no soggy white goo inside. £18 for the 3 of us to have a real hearty fish and chips. Service with a smile topped it for me. Thank you Kennedy's.

Vivienne G.

Yelp
the restaurant is opposite to my office, not big but very nice. easy to reach from Angel station. Food is great and not expensive. btw, there is a very nice bar not far away from the Kennedy's, if you keep walking down the road on the left hand side.
