On the Grid : Kensington Fruit Market

"It’s hard to miss this place. This prominent grocer, right on the busy corner of Kensington and St. Andrew, has the best produce value in the neighbourhood, with prices low enough to ruin you for chain grocers. When you walk inside, you’re treated to a well-organized and colorful grocery shop. In the summer, they also have small planters perfect for the home. This is a convenient grocer to visit when doing any complementary grocery shopping in Chinatown nearby." - Charles Lim aka Ched

Love this store! Growing up Kensington had so Many produce stands and this is the last of them. Pricing is great and their quality is amazing. They go to the Ontario Food Terminal every morning at 4am to select the best produce. Local Asparagus just arrived for the season! Let’s support these folks over the chains!

I really enjoyed browsing through this market and checking out the different fruits and vegetables they offer. I picked up an orange watermelon and it was really good! I will definitely be returning.

Google

Came for tomatoe plants for my small garden. Limited supply, but lots of good options. Very reasonably priced

This fruit shop serves very fresh goods and fruits. Reasonable prices, polite sales staff. The store is very spacious and easy to choose fruits. Great.

Haven’t been since they re-opened but previously they had a good selection of fruit and veggies, and I found it was the best quality for price in Kensington.

Yelp
This is clearly the best spot to grab your veg and fruit. They also have a nice impulse selection of fresh herbs. Plenty of selection with some at rock bottom prices where the incentive is to move their product, rather than to maximize a profit. That's appreciated when you just need to cook and are not in the market for tourist activities. It's right across from Essence on the corner of Kensington beside rasta pasta. No need to go anywhere else, as they 'have it all'. Cash only.

Yelp
This is the best produce store in Kensington. They have particularly good greens with lots of variety: lettuce, kale, chard, collards, endive, escarole, cabbage, bok choy, spinach, arugula, herbs. Lots of different kinds of peppers, too. And in the summer they have very inexpensive vegetable and herb plants. I know it all comes from the food terminal but a good produce store will choose the freshest produce and get rid of over ripe stuff quickly.

Yelp
Always busy here, but the produce is often very fresh and usually cheaper than their competition in the area. Since the location is usually busy, the stock gets replenished frequently and they never run out of any items, at least not during the times I have visited. Plus during the warmer months there's an abundance of fresh produce and herbs to purchase for your own indoor/outdoor gardens at home. It seemed like the whole outside of the store is lined with mini containers screaming take me home, take me home and pick me, pick me. I'm always tempted to buy some as it'll be convenient to have freshly available produce at home, but just haven't taken the bait yet since I like coming to the market. The selection of fruits and vegetables may seem overwhelming, but everything is neatly organized and labeled well for easy identification and pricing. Whatever I'm looking for or want, they seem to have at any given time. They even have fiddleheads which not many places in the market carries. Overall, a good place to pick up fresh produce without paying too much and one of my go-to places in the market.

Yelp
How have I not already reviewed this Kensington Market gem? This place has hands-down the best produce in Kensington. Not only is the produce very high-quality, but it is reasonably priced. I'm always thrilled when I fill a full bag of fruits and veggies and don't even hit the $8 debit card minimum. It's also a lot of fun to imagine how much more the same items would cost at Loblaws (usually triple or more). A few tips: --It's best to go on a weekday. Weekends can get pretty busy. You'll have to practice your best shopping while in line. --Cash and debit only...debit minimum is $8. --Take a look at the "bargain bins" outside. Perfect if you're making soups/stews that don't need the prettiest veggies.

Yelp
Best produce market in Kensington. Includes refrigerated section for salad kits (preparing food for one, these are ideal). Always fresh good quality produce on main area though there is a section of discounted stuff, past its prime but good for cooking.

Yelp
Always great here. The best produce in Kensington hands down. Also, great prices. You really can't go wrong. A pack of mixed mushrooms for under $2... organic fresh asparagus at $4 a bunch in the summer .... you get the picture. It's the closest best thing if you can't get to your farmers market for the week.

Yelp
Things I like to buy here: Broccoli Apples Blueberries Kale Spinach Strawberries Asparagus Tomatoes Yes, that is a list of fruits and vegetables. No, they are not as good as pizza but they are good for you. And guess what?! If you buy all of those above things at this location it comes in under $15. It pays to eat well.

Yelp
Great store. Always had nice produce, and a good selection of fresh herbs (cilantro, basil, mint, parsley, dill, etc(

Yelp
I just purchased a water melon at Kesington Fruit market for $12.99. Most of the grocery stores around our area, including Whole Foods, sell the water melon at this time of year at approximately $5.95 to $6.95. When I called the clerk to inquire about the high cost, she was rude and non-cooperative. I go to Kesington district because of the lower cost of produce and their freshness. This is not the case at the Kesington Fruit Market on St. Andrew St. It is also incredibly hurtful when a clerk is so rude when all you are doing is inquiring about a product. I will never shop there again.
