Kerbey Lane Cafe Is Opening in San Marcos at the Texas State University | Eater Austin

"Expanding into San Marcos as part of Texas State University, the 24/7 diner chain will take over the Saltgrass Steakhouse space at 221 Sessom Drive under a ten-year lease approved by the university system's board; this will be the chain's second non‑Austin location after Round Rock. Founded in 1980 in a small house on Kerbey Lane, the family‑owned operation now runs eight Austin-area locations (many open 24 hours) and has adapted to coronavirus by temporarily closing dining rooms and shifting to drive‑thru, takeout, delivery, and mobile ordering where available." - Nadia Chaudhury

The location alone is reason enough to come here, perched above the spot where the springs lake falls down to begin the river below. Majestic pecan and cypress trees offer shade and the sound of the flowing water just plain makes everything better. And the restaurant itself is the same terrific establishment Kerbey Lane is known for. Bright and cheery inside, it offers tables with river views and booths inside or you can set out on the deck right by the falls. I’ve always loved the pancakes, so I ordered blueberry ones with 2 eggs and bacon, a perfect late lunch. Delicious. With the range of menu offerings, I could come here daily and not get bored. There is a full bar and I loved the choices of craft beer on tap.

Google
Kerby Lane is such a comfortable atmosphere to share a meal in! Attentive but not overwhelming service, great menu, good sized portions and Hella good views which chowing down! I love the fact they sell local art off their walls and support the arts community. Our table enjoyed one of their bennies and the pancake flight. Ate without snapping a photo of my plate.

Google
What an amazing restaurant! A true gem in San Marcos!! Located on the river, the views were beautiful and the inside was really wonderful with floor to ceiling windows. We sat right over the waterfall! We tried to get lunch during day 2 of move it but it was super busy so returned for a late breakfast after our hotel check out and had no wait! Our waitress, Riley, was fantastic! Super friendly and knowledgeable we ordered what she recommended and we're not disappointed!! The food was A+, the Crispy Chicken Benedict and the Peach Cobler pancakes were outstanding! It was so good when our daughter texted she and her new roommate were hungry, we left the restaurant, picked them up and drove right back so they too could enjoy what had!!

Google
Great experience from the second we walked in the door. Food was incredible and our server, Balinda was so accommodating!! She brought out 4 sauces for us to try with the migas and put the creamer for the cold brew on the side, knowing how particular people can be with their milk to cold brew ratios. She was awesome and the view above the waterfall at headwaters was gorgeous. 10/10 experience

Google
Awesome spot for brunch or comfort food. The pancakes are huge and delicious. Great patio with river views, so try to get a table outside or by the window. It's a fun, laid-back setting, and the whole menu is served all day. It's really busy on the weekends so service is a little slow and parking is scarce.

Natalie R.

Google
For our first visit to Kerbey Lane Cafe, we had breakfast out on the patio to enjoy the river view. All of our items tasted great, and we decided to visit the next day for brunch. Service was excellent both days, and both times there was no wait at all. We will definitely visit when we are back in town.

Google
I had the best time at this place. Let me start dating that the view to the river is majestic, my girlfriends and I sat outside with the best view and we had a blast! We had the steak and frites and it was the best I’ve had! I loved the chimichurri and the white sauce on it, I was so upset when I forgot my leftovers on the table. I had mimosas and my waitress was very kind and accommodating, I will definitely come back!

Google
My boyfriend and I come here pretty often and love it so so much! But today I especially was super pleased with our service from Jordan W! (I believe that was their name) Very attentive, kind and patient - and I loved their to go box note! Had a lovely brunch :)

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere, scenery and awesome people. Recommend taking friends and relatives so they can enjoy it too

Yelp
Long time Kerbey Lane customer and I love this location. It's closer to home for me, but the view is what makes it better than all the others. Its view of the falls and the beginning of the San Marcos River are gorgeous. The food is always great. It's one of my favorite places for pan seared salmon that doesn't break the bank. If you're stopping for lunch their grilled chicken pesto panini is a tasty option. The service is usually good at this location. Lots of students work there so the staff is always changing. On a whole, this location is one of our favorites. Plus their pancake specials make for a tasty dessert.

Yelp
Five stars all the way. I found that they have a waitlist if you call in advance or go online. I had a seasonal treat, Migas with pumpkin French toast...so-so-so good! Nina was our server, somehow for the second time, she is the greatest!
google avatar

Drew T.

Yelp
Been here quite often, always a great spot for brunch. The migas, chilaquiles, pancakes, chicken & waffles, hash, etc are delicious, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. There's a bit of wait at times but is definitely worth the wait. The staff is friendly and willing to recommend a dish if you're undecided or simply torn on which to eat. Has great seating, indoors, outdoors with a nice river view, and a bar if you prefer to eat there while enjoying a delicious Bloody Mary or mimosas. This is a must come when in San Marcos.

Yelp
Really beautiful! Good and friendly service and environment. The food was really good we got a shrimp/pineapple/thai salad thing and it was beautiful and tasty and they had one of the best matcha lattes ive had. Definitely would recommend

Yelp
I haven't been to kerbey lane care in years since I was last in Austin. So glad we could stop by this location on our way home from new braunfels. We got seated within 5 minutes on a Sunday early afternoon, which is a miracle. Made up for the parking situation as we were going in circles waiting for a spot to open up. The space is huge, with lots of seating. Even though there were so many people, it didn't feel crammed. Our server was a young college student, and she took great care of us. Super sweet and helpful. I got the Paris Texas platter, so it came with the Migas and French toast. The migas was DELICIOUS. Next time, I would get the queso on top of the migas. The French toast was dense and fluffy, and I enjoyed it, but after trying my friend's blueberry pancakes, that topped the charts for me.

Yelp
I am a big fan of Kerbey Lane Cafe, and I had a great experience with its breakfast. I was so surprised when I saw some of the not so positive reviews, but there is no surprise anymore because I visited there to eat dinner. It was not a busy nite as we walked in around 9 pm. I was super happy to show visiting friend the local Austin restaurant. Ambiance was empty. While there was only one another table was dining. It took them quite while to sit us. We order the as soon as waitered show up. Nothing fancy. Food was terrible. It was cold. Literally cold. Meat was sad. Fries were crying . It took around 30 minutes food to arrive fyi. I did not see the waiter since initial order btw. Our drinks were empty. The entire dinner was a terrible experience and I asked for the check then i realized we also ordered the chocolate cake which never arrived. After today's experience I dont think I will ever eat dinner here again. I hope someone does something to fix this location. It is a quite a bit disappointment to see. They need some adult supervision here before this place goes out of business, and it will be a shame.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots to visit while in the Austin area! This particular location is right by the river which makes for a nice view while eating! Their staff is usually friendly and efficient, the food is always good too! Definitely recommend any of their locations!
google avatar

Sabine F.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. I had the salmon and my husband the steak. The flavors were indescribable. Never tasted the Asian flare they added to the dish. The presentation was very stunning. The staff was very welcoming and attentive.
google avatar

Kevin E.

Yelp
Service was not as good as the last location in Austin I stopped at, but the food was on point. And you cannot beat that river view right over the old mill's falls! The Butter Coffee was a pancake in a mug and I could have had at least 2 more. The Med salad was well made and had generous portions. This will definitely be one of our fave new spots in town.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
The first time I had been here we ordered chicken and pancakes and an omelette. The chicken and pancakes came with a spicy maple buffalo sauce. I ordered this on the side and loved the dish without it, but made use of it with the omelette which was delicious! This visit we weren't as impressed. The service was nice and of course beautiful views. However the sauce ordered with the sandwich was more of a vinaigrette taste and the chicken has a bland flavor.

Yelp
Okay I'm ready to review... I've been here twice. Once for brunch on a Sunday and now dinner on a Thursday. First let me say their breakfast/brunch menu was outstanding! So much so that we had to come back and try the dinner menu which also looked outstanding. Oh and I brought 7 of my best friends with me for cocktails before we had dinner. We sat outside on the screened in patio which we all loved! The cocktails were just okay. The server did not know the difference between grapefruit juice and Deep Eddy Grapefruit vodka. Drinks were watered down so that's a no go for dinner drinks unless you get beer of which their selection is limited. No lite beers. Friends were Disappointed. Now the drinks on the breakfast menu were okay bc how bad can you screw up a mimosa or wine? As far as food was concerned breakfast/brunch menu was what brought us back to try the dinner menu. So I'm a super fan for brunch! Dinner was just okay. Most of our friends got a burger to which they replied was just okay. Kind of dry. I had steak frites which was cooked to a med rare, but under seasoned. I had the chimichuri on the side which was definitely needed for flavor. Had to add salt. No biggies, right? The wagu meatloaf wrapped in bacon was worth the $ and the chicken was ordered from the GF menu, but came out with pita bread instead of veggies. They did correct it. Chicken was a little dry. All in all, something was off between brunch service and dinner service. The wait staff was not busy at all, but they could not seem to get it together to take an order correctly and certainly did not know the menu or the difference between an adult beverage and juice. We will go back for the outdoor ambiance and brunch, but dinner still needs lots of work.

Yelp
i have eaten here many times for brunch, and I have loved it each time. To me, weather permitting, it's wonderful to sit on the patio. There is such a beautiful view of the San Marcos river and the waterfall. Historically, this used to be a grist mill. There is ample parking and interior seating. The restaurant is much larger than one would imagine. Be prepared, if here on a Sunday afternoon church hours, you can plan on a wait. But, waiting usually means the food is worth the visit. I have had so many different entrees, and each were wonderful.

Yelp
Great Patio Views of the San Marcos River Come for the food...stay for the views! We came here for the first time and had great food, excellent service from Our waitress Kegan and amazing views!

Yelp
I visited this location on a Saturday around noon and the parking was not ideal. Definitely had to circle the parking lot a few times to find a spot. However, the tranquil view from the table made it all worth while. The food was excellent. Definitely enjoyed my experience here over the other locations I have visited in the past. As even though it was busy, my server kept my tea full and checked in regularly.

Jessica H.

Yelp
The food is so good! The views are so nice. Once we sat right by the huge windows by the water and bird watches while eating
google avatar

Riley S.

Yelp
Was in town for a wedding and a bunch of my friends and I decided that this was the best sounding place to go to for brunch on a beautiful Saturday. Think all of San Marcos had the same idea too!! Our group was quite large so unfortunately we waited 45+ minutes and they do not take reservations, so if you are planning to come here, go early! I am glad we stayed in spite of the long wait time as the food and ambiance was great! The servers and hostess were all very nice and accommodating to our large group. Everything my friends got was amazing, they said. I am a brunch girl so had to get a breakfast item and am so glad I did. I had the HARDEST time picking what to eat. Their online menu has images of everything which is super awesome. I landed on the baked potato omelet and it was delicious. Very well seasoned potatoes and great flavors in the omelet with a great potion size as well, the sides are huge!!!My friends all got lunch items instead of breakfast and everyone raved about what they ordered as well. My only complaints were the very long wait time which exceeded what they had told us and the women's bathroom didn't smell so great. This place is definitely worth checking out and if you get there early enough you can eat outside by the river which is so fun!
google avatar

Sheri M.

Yelp
Food is great, reasonably priced for what it is, but plan to spend time looking for parking. The lot holds less than 50 cars and the restaurant probably holds 400 people. There is absolutely no nearby parking areas. Also the bathrooms are tiny, 3 stalls for the women. Booths need new seats, the vinyl is all cracked. Otherwise this place is cool. Indoor and outdoor seating options and private rooms for parties.
google avatar

Vince G.

Yelp
Food was really great quality for the price! The atmosphere was nice. Although there were some visible cobwebs that were pretty thick, it was really clean in the important areas. Service was quick and it was worth the wait. The view at this particular location is also very cool, with lots of water and trees, and tables where you can sit right at the window. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Kerbey Lane Cafe is the go-to restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with over 8 pet friendly locations in the Austin-area. We visited the SAN MARCOS, TX location and were able to walk through the restaurant to the outdoor patio! The patio is screened-in and covered by a roof overlooking Spring Lake. They have a huge American food menu and full bar and are famous for their pancakes and queso! Items are clearly marked if you're looking for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free items. The vegan queso was amazing and we could eat it non-stop. It is a popular place and you can add your name to the waitlist on their website and even request the outdoor location. These locations also have a pet friendly patio: Central Austin South Austin Northwest Austin Southwest Austin Westlake Austin Mueller Austin Round Rock

Yelp
I love that you can look over the river while you eat! Unfortunately, if you sit by the huge window with the great view be prepared to get HOT! I have been to multiple locations of Kerbey Lane and this one is my favorite. The summer menu is "muh" the lemon poppy French toast was dry and I didn't waste the calories on it. Everything else on the Pairs Platter was amazing! Will hit this location again if we are in the area!
google avatar

Eagle E.

Yelp
Food was excellent. More so than the food being great my server Alexia was over the top at providing excellent service. That's all you can ask for and is so nice when you get both. GREAT JOB!!!
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Great little spot with a cool view of the river. My son and I meet here periodically for breakfast / brunch as he is in school at TXST. Reasonable prices, great selections.

Samera W.

Yelp
love that it is breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day. outside seating is beautiful with the waterfall, albeit a little cold. would come again when i'm in the area next
google avatar

Yelp
Love this restuarant! We have had brunch here several times and enjoyed all of our plates. The salmon was amazing. We enjoying sitting on the patio overooking the water. The wait staff is attentive, and they are dog freindly. Hightly recommend!
google avatar

Kenzie J.

Yelp
I loved this place so much! it was so chill and relaxing, our waiter, Major was SUPER kind and chill. The food was sooo delicious, i got the chicken pesto panini and oh my golly geee it was so good. The vibes of the restaurant were also so aesthetically pleasing!! If i lived in texas i would come as much as possible
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Ariella was an amazing waitress! She made us feel so welcome. Our bachelorette party had a great end of night adventure. The food was amazing. Lots of us got the Chicken Fried Platter! She even made us a root beer float! 10/10 would recommend! Came back for breakfast! Pike was a great server! Very sweet! Recommended the Maple Latte Iced! Yum! 10/10 breakfast

Yelp
Kerby Lane was a great spot to hit up after the Texas Smoke softball game. Party of 6. Plenty of room. Very nice staff, great atmosphere. Menu is very impressive making it hard to pick what you want as it all sounds good. I landed on the Howdy burger and everything in the burger was great. It can use some improvements. 1. Bun was cold- just hit that brioche on the grill for a minute or so and it would be so much better. 2. standard fries come with the the burger and they were so boring!!! Come on your place is the jam and you serve up these wimpy fries with no flavor. Only way to improve that is to upgrade to another option, however I worry a bit that option may fall flat. Worth a visit will come back and order something without fires. The view of the river is very nice too.
google avatar

Yelp
I had an average experience at Kerbey Lane, but the highlight of my visit was the beautiful view of the San Marcos River from the restaurant. The service at Kerbey Lane was great and our server was attentive and quick. Greek Chicken - The chicken was tender, but the flavors were underwhelming. It wasn't very authentic, but what do you expect from Kerbey Lane? The spinach underneath the chicken tasted surprisingly good and flavorful. This dish overall wasn't very memorable. Overall, Kerbey Lane to me is like any other American brunch restaurant. I would probably stick to breakfast/brunch food because that's what they're known for.
google avatar

JimBob C.

Yelp
Food was diverse and tasty. Had little grand daughters, granddaughter, wife in attendance. Service was a little slow, but not bad. Food was warm and good. Getting a check took a bit longer than expected. Will return
google avatar

Bruh M.

Yelp
Nice riverside view. The chicken and pancakes I ordered filled me right up. Overall 5 stars nice little restaurant
google avatar

Laramie S.

Yelp
Always great food when coming here. Service is always great. Normally a wait during brunch hours but it passes but quickly.

Paco P.

Yelp
Got an omelette and paid extra to get a side of French toast. Did not get the French toast. Would've rated 1 star but the omelette was really good despite having a questionable amount of sour cream

Dave W.

Yelp
Jake C (the tall one) was a great server! He recommended some lovely cocktails (even though he doesn't drink [proud of you Jakey]) and he made sure to stray us from the dishes he hadn't heard great feedback from. I was one thirsty boy but luckily he kept that thang on him (pitcher) and kept my water topped and my smile wide :))) Would totally come back here and drink seven more flatliners before I flatline at Sewell. #HAGS

Yelp
My wife and I go for breakfast 3-4 times a month. Service is always top notch and food is consistently good.

Mason R.

Yelp
Where to start where to start. I walked in this restaraunt because I had seen the view from the street. I was expecting nice ambiance and a nice brunch with my girlfriend. I got that but what stood out was the service. My server Brighton greeted me with a smile and that was just the start. From great recommendations to perfect service, I will be coming back and I will be asking for her again. I felt appreciated when the manager, Val came over and asked if everything was alright. But if you want the best service at this establishment, Brighton is your gal!

Yelp
Kerbey Lane was cute! My friend and I were drenched from the rain upon entering and were looking to grab a quick coffee and the host was the sweetest. She sat us at one of the two person tables next to the window with an overlook of the famous Kerbey Lane swimming area which was a joy. We ended up getting a pumpkin spice coffee and some chocolate pancakes. The coffee was pretty "mid" as the kids say, and didn't taste all that good. The pancakes were better. The marketing was definitely strange, as it's called "Kerbey Lane Cafe" but most of the people there were ordering full meals and our server looked at us weird when we didn't do the same. My main qualm with Kerbey Lane (aside from the lackluster Pumpkin Spice) was the interior design. The unique architecture of the building and the beautiful view had so much potential, but instead they just stuffed it with a ton of unimaginative decor (we're 35 miles and a whole county away from Austin, people, why are all the wall paintings Austin themed?) and blah seating and lighting. I think they have a lot of the way to go, but I see the concept!

Stella J.

Yelp
Had a nice Saturday lunch, not overly crowded, just short wait which was nice. Our waitress was great. We shared a California Omelet that was delicious. The eggs were cooked just right, the avocado and olives gave it good flavor, and the green sauce was smooth and creamy with a little bite to it. Unfortunately the sides were not so great. We chose bacon and a biscuit. The bacon was way undercooked and the biscuit was dry and hard! Come on Kerbey Lane, we expected better. Kerbey Lane is a unique restaurant and will always be a favorite, maybe they were just having an off day.
google avatar

Stacey Q.

Yelp
Terrific service, great food, love the ambiance! All the Benedict's are delicious, and get the fried green tomatoes!
google avatar

Parker A.

Yelp
Food was great. Good atmosphere for breakfast. Very popular spot, but that makes sense after visiting.

Don C.

Yelp
We enjoyed an excellent seasonal Thai salad, avocado toast & draft craft beers while sitting at a window table overlooking the roaring waterfall flowing into the clean San Marcos river populated with several swimmers including one happy dog. Fine service by our waiter Jordan, so I made a point of telling that to Lui the manager. The chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream topped off our relaxing mid-afternoon meal.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
Yummy food (as always), nice staff, and beautiful view of the river! Definitely if you're down south and looking for a classic Austin breakfast while not in Austin, then this is the perfect mix of atx and smtx.

Yelp
My chosen fam loves frequents this place so I was excited to check it out with them! Wait or reservation: They don't take reservations but you can call ahead. We had a late night craving so they didn't have a wait around 9p on a Sunday ;) Parking: They have their own lot! Location: Somewhere in fabulous San Marcos! Vibe: There is one! It's giving me industrial farm house. Lots of windows and light (well imagine since I was there at night), high ceilings and beams, wood floors. My friend told me it was built on a cave and it's on the water! Service: Fabulous! The server was kind and attentive. She even made an exception for me to order off menu! Food: Ready to fly back for this. Kerbey Lane has it all! We went for the pancakes and that's what we got. Being gluten mindful I went for GF pancakes. When they came out I asked if they were actually GF because they were giant and fluffy and I was amazed. Why didn't I document?! The chocolate chips just added even more to the deliciousness. Obvi had a side of bacon and they didn't skimp. Also why do some places give one piece of bacon and call it a side? No. I want like 4-6 pieces thank you. The bacon was not too crispy! And my special request was a tiny sample of queso because yes they have breakfast and queso. Like all my dreams come true. Perfection! Pricing: Great! Reasonable. Gluten Free and Nonalcoholic: Loads of GF options that are fun and not just an egg or something. They have a whole cafe menu and grapefruit juice which is always a yassssss in my book Pro tip: Kids eat feee on Tuesdays

Yelp
The service was amazing our waiter Julian was very attentive and he made sure our experience was great. Julian also made sure our food was done fast and good. He gave us recommendations on what we can get and answer all our questions. He deserves a raise!! The food was so delicious and the pancakes were so fluffy and good. The Mac and cheese was to die for and its a big plate so your getting your moneys worth. The place felt so cozy and beautiful. I was sitting at the booth and I can still see natural light shining through. Overall definitely recommend and I will be coming back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Met there for brunch. Nice scenery, looked clean and the waitress was informative about suggesting certain items. First plate had hair on side and the food that was suggested had no flavor. Service was semi slow and the host didn't appear to be friendly at all and looked to be having a bad morning. Think I'll try another place next time.

Gracie N.

Yelp
I had the texas waygu meatloaf and the mimosa tower, and wow!! The food was amazing but the service was even better! If you come recommend Ella, she is the sweetest server I've ever had
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
Queso for breakfast hits different HA! We don't do that in Maryland. It was delicious. Good mimosas- very strong though! Could have a bit more juice. I had the French toast platter which didn't stand out as anything special compared to many other meals I had during my time in Texas. Eggs were pretty bland. My boyfriend had the migas which he really enjoyed. They had shirts for sale in the front and you can look at the designs while you are waiting to be seated. Unfortunately, when you actually inquire about buying a shirt, no one seems to know what you are talking about and they don't have shirts in stock which is strange. Views of the river are beautiful. Place seems very clean!

Yelp
My husband and I heard good things about Kerbey Lane but were both sorely disappointed!! We went for lunch around 1:30 pm during the week - not a lot of people were there. We ordered 2 plates of the meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Both plates came out cold and the food tasted absolutely horrible. The food looked dried up and old like it had been on the plate for awhile under a heat lamp. The potatoes had hard crusty cheese on top and the meatloaf had a dried up regurgitated-looking yellow sauce that not only didn't go with meatloaf it also tasted gross! I actually had severe digestive problems through the night and get nauseous just thinking about it. My body just totally rejected this food! I called the manager the next day and he was seemingly nice and said he would call back. But he never did call. Guess they just don't give a poop about their customers. The only bright spot was our waiter. He was great - we gave him a tip but felt sorry that he had to work at such a bad restaurant. We will never eat there again!! We suggest you find somewhere else to go. Eating out is so expensive these days - eating at Kerbey Lane is like flushing your money down the toilet - literally.
