15 Places to Try Tea in NYC

"Kettl brings the rarest of Japanese teas to a spacious and sunny Greenpoint shop. After a stint at Ito En, owner Zach Mangan cultivated years-long relationships with rural farmers to develop a menu that includes about 30 sencha and matcha varietals as well as 10 kinds of labor-intensive gyokuro (sheets are manually hung and adjusted to maximize sweetness), two pan-fried kamairichas sans bitterness, and a Yumewakaba black tea that releases a floral scent and sweet flavor. Each tea here is served in a pot or as part of a must-try tea tasting." - Caroline Shin

The Best Socially Conscious Sources for Coffee and Tea - Eater

"Through its unique relationships with tea growers in Japan, Kettl has become the go-to for restaurants and Japanese tea lovers for the freshness and quality of its teas, which, because of supply chains, would not otherwise be available in the U.S. It has a small brick-and-mortar storefront in Manhattan but ships its shincha, matcha, genmaicha, rare Japanese oolong and black tea, and sobacha nationwide." - Katie Okamoto

I was so disappointed in the taste. I got the cocoa nutty matcha and it tasted very light in flavor. I also tried my friends floral one and that was even lighter. Mine also had lumps in it sadly. It’s a nice color though. Wish there was a place to sit.

A hit or miss experience depending on whoever is making your latte. The photos of the matcha without a lid and with a lid were from two separate visits. I came when there was zero line, not busy (so the barista had no reason to rush), and the matcha I received was super clumpy. However the matcha powder has reliably been high quality and there are different variations. They have simple syrup and honey you can add after receiving your drink. You can also buy matcha tins and snacks.

If you’re a matcha enthusiast, you’ll love the quality and variety of their matcha. They don’t fool you with all different fruity variations or visuals. They are as good as matcha as it is. The only downside is that they don’t have a seat, but with the quality, it is totally okay.

Kettl Tea House is a tea house without the “house” part—just a walk-up window inside Bowery Market. No seating, no indoor space, just matcha drinks. The matcha is legit, smooth and well-crafted, but expect a bit of a wait. Would be nice if they had a space for tastings, especially with their range of green teas.

My $10 matcha was clumpy and not fully whisked properly. The ratio of milk/water/matcha was fine but I got weird standoffish vibes from the barista as well… not going back due to inconsistency of the product

Had a nice experience last week and went a couple of times. Polite cashier named Helen … and perfect matcha (with great matcha art). Amazing how small that space is for everyone working. Impressive that they are there all day in that small space. Cute window. Great Matcha.

Kettl probably has the best matcha in the U.S. Every tea they have is excellent and decadent. You can taste the quality in every sip. The bowery location falls a bit flat, though. They took away the only seating area they had and I sometimes have had my matcha very clumpy at the bottom.

I went into this with high expectations which is probably my own fault. The matcha was watery and not flavorful at all. It was also a bit bitter, which was especially apparent without any added sweetness. The preparation was bad (under whisked, boiling water instead of warm) and ultimately resulted in a very weak latte. I saw the clumps and grains of powder in my latte the moment it was handed to me, and I knew it wasn’t going to taste good. I will say the actual store was cute, and the staff were nice. The matcha powder also seems to be quite high quality (excellent color and scent), but everything else was subpar. I believe if they teach their baristas how to better make matcha, Kettl could be great.
