Overall, I had a great stay at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, but a few details about my trip in specific
The good:
-The location is excellent, the grounds are excellent, and the access to biking/hiking/ORV trails are great.
-The cabin was clean, it got pretty cold during my stay but the cabin stayed at a very comfortable temperature.
-After check in, the service from the KML staff was great. They were very helpful with directing me towards things to visit that I wasn't already aware of during my previous copper harbor visits.
The OK
-The wood provided in my fireplace was wet. It hissed loudly and released large amounts of steam/smoke for over an hour while it was burning. This also meant that it didn't burn that hot (not good for me trying to dry out gear)
-The café on site is really slow, and if you're getting anything other than the complimentary breakfast burrito then the prices are steep.
-The restaurant and bar in the lodge appears to be closed. Going out for a drink in town and finding a ride back up to the cabin can be a challenge, and its a ~3 mile walk in the woods to get to town so that isn't an option. Dinner is $100/head at the lodge, but you have to reserve it weeks in advance.
-The Wi-Fi is incredibly slow. I suspect this is by design (KML uses starlink, a friend that didn't stay at KML had pretty fast starlink in copper harbor at their campsite). It wasn't stable enough for me to call home, I had to visit the mariner in town to make a phone call.
-The road on the property is too tight to fit anything bigger than an F-150, so don't plan to bring your camper van or other larger vehicle to get a break from camping for a couple nights.
The Bad:
-My cabin had burn marks from coals on the carpet, there was a hole in the shower wall, and the toilet seat/lid wasn't actually fastened to the toilet (despite there being grip bars all over the bathroom, but it had an ADA hazard like the toilet seat). For $270/night or whatever I paid, I'd expect the cabin to be taken care of a bit better.
-Someone, either a malicious actor on site or the KML Wi-Fi owner, was trying to steal credentials from my phone during my entire stay. I kept getting alerts about websites receiving incorrect SSL certificates, which is a tell tale sign of a Man in the Middle attack. My first night here, I had to drive up brockway mountain to get cell signal to change passwords because someone started triggering MFA requests by logging in to various sites with my real credentials from Pakistan. Don't trust the Wi-Fi here.
-The owner, before I verified that I was renting a cabin, can only described as "hostile". They greeted me in the parking lot by aggressively approaching my vehicle before I even stepped out and asking if I was there for check in. After I verified what cabin I was staying in and for what days, their attitude did a 180 and they were very friendly. The whole interaction was very bizarre. I watched them do this to several other people who didn't have a rental booked, and turn them away before they could ask about renting a cabin, which was an interesting choice since the resort felt empty while I was there. My first 2 days staying here, I only saw 2 other cars at the ~20 cabins.
-According to the locals in town, KML is the reason why no new MTB trails have been developed in the past ~8 years and several trails have been closed to biking. Unfortunately, when the county was going bankrupt and sold KML, a ton of the surrounding mountain and forest went with it, and KML doesn't seem to want people biking on their property.
My stay ended up being pretty good, the weather didn't cooperate at all (1.5 days of rain on my 4 day trip), but that's not on KML. It is worth noting while you're here that KML can be reasonably clear weather, but the town can have like 100ft visibility at the same time. Everything around here gets extremely slippery when the fog rolls in.
I visited with a group, which worked out fine, but I don't think I'd stay here as a solo traveler due to the price and abundance of extremely cheap camping nearby.
