This Dish Tells the Story of How COVID-19 Broke the Food System | Bon Appétit

"A seafood supplier that relied on restaurants for roughly 75 percent of its business; facing that loss, leadership pivoted to connect restaurant partners with other local producers such as farmers and butchers while handling delivery logistics so chefs can order directly from producers." - ByPriya Krishna

Stopped here after reading others' excellent reviews. It didn't disappoint. We got our fish fix, taking home multiple pieces to fix fresh and some for the freezer. Christopher was super friendly and gave these land-lubbers lots of advice on how to cook our pieces. Great selection! Thanks!

Google
Great everything. The employees are kind and extremely knowledgeable about the products sold. This great place does more than sell fresh seafood. There's a walk up taco stand with the best fish tacos/burritos I've ever had. Plus they supply the majority of top rated restaurants in the greater Seattle area and further. Your favorite dish at your favorite restaurant in the State of Washington most likely was made with ingredients supplied by Key City Fish Company. I'm hooked for life. Thank you, Key City.

My cardiac alert dog was denied access here , they do not care about ADA law tried to show an ADA card but wouldn't look at it and said my dog would get hair on their products. I'm very disappointed in this business. My mom got a crab but seemed over priced. Update: the owner has called me and apologized and has educated their staff on the ADA law and discrimination.

Google
This place is a gem! The staff is really helpful, lots of local seafood. We tried the spicy salmon dip (had to return for more the next day), a crab, steamers, bay scallops and the most delicious King salmon I’ve ever eaten. I will look forward to the opportunity to return.

Christopher is the main man here and he made my experience amazing! From out of state and he explained everything very well. Would recommend his help and this place has a lot of fresh seafood!!

Remember what it was like to have a corner store. Who knew you and your favorites? This is that place, and then some! I just enjoyed the best tuna steak of my life - for breakfast... 😋🥰

Google
They have lots of selections on seafood and local meat. No spot shrimp in April and the unfrozen Short's farm Steak is only during the summer. The live dungeness crab was not very big today. We also bought some wild boar bacon and Oregon beef. Mask is required as of 04-2021

Google
A true community institution selling extremely high quality fish and meat. Other small cities wish they had such a great meat and seafood shop!

Yelp
Special ordered an organic small Turkey for Thanksgiving, suppose to come thawed. Got just the opposite, my name was written on the free range Turkey list -- NOT the same and turkey NOT thawed, geeze! Yup, Counter folks at the time did seem random, confused, rushed and the obvious mistake by clerk who took order incorrectly made no effort to correct or apologize. Pfft.. Stick to fish maybe and use receipts on pre-ordered stuff. I will not be back.

Yelp
Got to enjoy oysters and muscles here! Yum! Lovely how all the muscles we cooked opened - means they are fresh!!!!

Yelp
Worst fish tacos ever. Terrible food, long wait, and bad customer service. Skip it and go somewhere else.

Yelp
Stopped in today to pick up two whole Washington Coho salmon to smoke, just $12.99/pound. Everything looked really fresh; can't wait to try it. They were really fresh and delicious; will definitely be back!

Yelp
Small selection of good quality fish. With the exception of the spot prawns everything was good. The fish tacos at the stand next to the market were OK but very expensive. Like $60 for 4 tacos. The woman there was very hard to understand and communicate with so there might have need a mistake on the bill.

Yelp
The driver was, cutting people off and driving like an idiot. And almost got us in a car accident. We called the number, and the person that answered acted nonchalant and cool about the whole thing. Which made us even more upset.

Yelp
Came to pick up some food for dinner and was very disappointed. The fish all looked great and the selection was good. Unfortunately, the person working there was incredibly rude to us. We bought a piece of fish, some shrimp and some scallops. I asked for the fish first and after he wrapped it up, I let him know I wanted some other items and he sighed loudly and said "what do you want?" I asked the price of the prawns because there was none and he stared at me like I was being unreasonable before again sighing and telling us the price. Finally, I asked for three scallops but when we got home, we found two scallops and a scrap of a third. I say scrap because it was clearly a piece that had broken off from a scallop and was less than 1/4 of the size of the scallops. All in all just a bad experience.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this business has two sides and this review must look at each to be clear. The fish market is awesome! Lots of fresh caught fish, live shellfish, wonderful smoked salmon, and a great assortment of local cheeses. The staff was super friendly and the smoked salmon bellies were delicious. This part of the business would get a five star rating from me. Now, the not so good. "Tacos to Go" is a small, inefficiently run operation that causes huge delays in their ability to process orders. I arrived at 11:30 a.m., 30 minutes after they were supposed to open. But, there was a sign in the window indicationg that they would open at 11:45 that day due to a staffing issue. I decided to wait since it was only 15 minutes. Well, they finally opened at 11:50 and I was the first in line. I ordered six of their standard fish tacos, one of the taco specials, and one beef burrito. No, this was not all for me alone! I felt bad for the young lady opening the stand as she seemed overwhelmed. I gave her a $10 tip for her efforts. Luckily another worker joined her at that point to take orders from the growing line at the order window. Then the wait started. This is a taco stand, their "bread and butter" is tacos. Why did it take over 45 minutes to make seven tacos? I was watching the workers and there was a lot of hurry up and wait going on with the process. The tortillas were being heated in an oven and they had to open the oven, grab a hot tortilla, move it to the filling station, fill it, wrap it, and then start again. The tacos were pretty good and I would love to eat there again, but I cannot sink that much time into waiting for a taco order. Before you say, "well you should have oredered in advance online or by phone", nope. While waiting for my food, another guy walked up to collect the order that he had made over an hour ago. He was told that they had not even started on it and to come back in about 20 minutes. He took it well, but admitted that if he did not work just a few steps away, it would have been much more frustrating. So in the end, I love the fish / cheese market, enjoyed the tacos, but will likely never eat at Tacos to Go due to the excruciatingly slow service.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience at Key City Fish when I decided to try this market. I asked for 1.5 pounds of the $25-per-pound halibut, and said I would be cutting into pieces to cover with panko and pan fry, for three people. When I got home, I discovered that the almost $40 piece of fish had the bony ridge left running along the top of it! I had to cut that out, leaving me with about a third of the amount of fish I wanted. When I called to ask about this, I was told that that is normal, they don't bother to cut out the bony ridge--just include it and charge for it! Wow! :( Maybe that's okay for fish stew--but NOT for expensive halibut pieces I explained I wanted for guests. In future I will go to Port Hadlock QFC's fish counter where I have had outstanding experiences for years.

Yelp
My first time as just discovered this place !! Came here 7/2/23. Lots of options for local seafood including great selection of cheese, wine, and even butter available!! The store was set up so cute. The staff person was really helpful and facilitated one of the customers to assist me with info about steaming clams since she herself had never made them. I bought a pound of local clams and the directions were spot on...first time making them and were delicious and so fresh!! This place is now my favorite northwest seafood shop

Yelp
I chanced upon this hole in the wall taco/burrito stand almost by accident, having biked into town on the lovely dirt bike trail from the north ( definitely rideable in a skinny tire bike, And so much better than route 20). The people in line at 2 pm on a weekday caught my attention. The albacore tuna special reeled me in. I opted for the burrito while my biking friend got two tacos. Perfect size for biking, no rice and beans of gloppy stuff to slow you down. Lots of good and well prepared fish. If I lived in PT I'd definitely become a member, and take advantage of the 10% discount.

Rachel K.

Yelp
We came here for steaks and we're pleasantly surprised by the tacos to go. We got 2 ribeyes for dinner that were excellent. We then purchased 3 burritos (two pork, one bean) for lunch and were very happy. Burritos were large and tasty. The hot sauce is more like buffalo sauce which was interesting. Service was a little slow but we didn't have anywhere to be so it wasn't a problem.

Yelp
Great selection, helpful staff overall. We picked up some candied salmon and some garlic cheese. The salmon was phenomenal as was the cheese. Staff was super helpful and there were at least two people working the counter. Only 4 patrons can enter at a time. The fish shack next door smelled wonderful, we will hit that up next time.

Kenneth J.

Yelp
driver was cutting off people and riding peoples butts on road. and when we called the company they acted nonchalant and cool about it.

Yelp
Two tacos for two people $30.33. This would even be ok if it was more than cabbage and soggy corn tacos. This place can do much better. We will not be back until they can find the fish!!! Trying to support local businesses, but this is a rip off. Get real people.

Yelp
We are so fortunate to have this fantastic fish market in Port Townsend. Our family has been shopping here for years and have never been disappointed with the outstanding selection of meat, fish, wine, and delicious deli items. The taco stand is fantastic and located next door. All of the service people are helpful and efficient. We are appreciative of this exceptional business, especially during these challenging times.

Yelp
Spent over $70 for crab that was smelly, tasteless and full of water. Was like eating a sponge. Called them to complain about it and was told no receipt, can't help you. We weren't given a receipt in the first place. There was no sign that said previously frozen..or we wouldn't have bought it had we known that.. Told him I wouldn't shop there any more. His response.. sorry to hear that...have a nice day.

Yelp
I just had to leave this review. I rarely do this but in this case it is so well deserved. My wife made me deal yesterday, she would make Oysters Rockefeller if I'd go to pick them up. So she ordered 18 medium size oyster. The counterman said they would arrive later that day and to pick them up at 4:00pm. Well when I arrived the guy looked at me with a puzzled expression and went into the back and spoke with the guy in charge. A minute later he comes back with the order. I pay much less than I thought they would cost and leave. When I got home the oysters were very large and absolutely delicious. I'm guessing the medium oysters had not yet arrived or were back ordered, so the boss gave us the large oysters at the cost of the medium oysters. The product was exceptional and that kind of service just outstanding. You guys just made a life long customer.

Yelp
This is one of the best places to get beef or seafood. It's a small shop with fantastic quality and even better prices. I just found out they will even deliver to Seattle. I'm more then hooked. I'll be ordering regularly as the places that can compete with the quality in Seattle are twice the price.

Yelp
I was on an abbreviated lunch break from a massage class. So, I decided to try the Taco window instead of going inside to the market/restaurant. After I stood at the window for about 5 minutes, a young man stepped up and asked if I was waiting for food. When I explained that I was waiting to order, he instructed to move over to another window. I took one lateral step to position myself in front of the adjoining window. There, I waited another 5 minutes before being asked for my order, one of their two specials: Cajun, blackened sockeye salmon burrito. The burrito was mediocre at best. The salmon did not appear or taste "blackened". It was not very big in comparison to either taco truck or most of the corporate taco chain products. Finally, none of the sauces or relishes encases in the tortilla with the fish were particularly noteworthy. Several other reviewers indicate that this place allegedly serves commercially caught wild steelhead. None of them claimed to have substantiated this allegation. So, I have not factored this into my scoring. Next time I'm in town I'll give the market/restaurant a shot...

Yelp
I had to stop eating my oysters at the Pourhouse to write this. Seriously the best customer service I have ever received from Dylan behind the fish counter. He had greatest recommendations for the oysters, cheese, and crackers we order. It was extremely pleasant working with him and even more happy about the outcome. I have come here times before, but this was the best experience. Will always recommend.

Yelp
Great service and even better crab! We came in shopping for crab legs to make dinner for four. One of the guys was quick to recommend a less expensive option of fresh packaged crab meat. We were weary at first, the container seemed small, so we opted for two containers and were on our way. Later that night we had more than enough meat and it was delicious! Plus he saved us the trouble of having to crack the legs and the cleanup! I loved this market, they had a great selection of all sorts of seafood and made sure the busy line moved steadily.

Yelp
Visiting from Cal. Friendly service and great selection. Ended up getting 4lbs of fresh line-caught King Salmon. Best salmon I've had in a long time.
google avatar

Roya J.

Yelp
The run down shack is hiding a diamond when it comes to food and friendly service. Seafood chowder was the best, even better than the 10-year running winner of the Monterey Bay chowder. Smoked salmon and fish tacos were phenomenal. It took a little bit to get our order, but from experience I know one has to wait for good fresh food.

Yelp
If you're looking for dry ice in Port Townsend, don't. It's not a "dry" town, and no one, including the Key City Fish Company had any. But, having said that, this place was a real find. Went in for dry ice, came out 30 minutes later with some of the most delicious lamb jerky I've ever tasted. Perfect balance of salt, smoke, and a mild mustard flavor that really accentuated the lamb. Their pepper jerky and beef jerky were also delicious, but the lamb jerky was truly extraordinary. The other major surprise was the amazing assortment of meats they had, everything from wonderfully fresh seafood to beautiful cut meats - from the normal choices of beef and pork to esoterics like pheasant breast. It truly made us wish were staying a couple more days... and had a kitchen! Plus, the reason we spent 30 minutes in there was that the two guys who worked there were really cool and fun to talk with. Of course, they went to the "wrong" high school (go Chimacum Cowboys!) but were otherwise quite decent folks. I think the thing I liked the most was that the service was actually friendly even when they didn't think they had anything to sell me. They were very good about brainstorming all the other places in town we might find dry ice before reluctantly concluding we were out of luck; they did give us several ice packs even though we didn't spend much money (after all, though the jerky was delicious, there's only so much lamby goodness one can eat at one time!)

Michael R.

Yelp
Great fresh fish selection and very friendly and helpful staff. I will make this fish market my first choice when it comes to fresh fish and I live over thirty miles away.

Yelp
We got fresh fish here twice while we were on vacation in Kingston. Both times, the staff were incredibly helpful in selecting the right fish, potions, cut and cooking tips. They clearly have a great relationship with the locals, but were awesome with us too! Great selection of fresh seafood plus local cheeses and other extras to help throw together a quick feast. We will miss this!

Randall L.

Yelp
Waited for a long time, then they swrved someone behind me. The nachos were congealed, chips burnt. Tacos were surprizingly tasteless.
google avatar

Carol T.

Yelp
This was the best Fish Mkt. By far! The fish was very fresh, prices lower than other places and the help was great. We purchased clams, mussels, scallops and a piece of sturgeon. We will be back!
google avatar

Laurie H.

Yelp
We are from out of town and found this place through yelp. The owner and all the employees were so helpful and cheerful. We got 3 cooked Dungeness crabs which they cleaned for us. Also bought fresh oysters and they instructed us how to cook on barbecue. You might have to wait awhile to get served, but it is worth it! They also have a taco shop with fish chowder, fish and chips, etc.
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
Their selection is outstanding and their staff is even better. My only difficulty when going in is not buying everything they have. Great quality and great prices. This is a must stop whenever we are up in Port Townsend and even by itself warrants the drive up.
google avatar

Lee B.

Yelp
After nearly being run down in the crosswalk by their red light running delivery truck I'm not a fan. Though that's based only on my experience with their truck.
google avatar

Sandra J.

Yelp
Based on the reviews of others I came here with my group with high hopes for lunch. This was not a destination I recommend or would return to. Our lunch took roughly 30 minutes prep for a taco to-go window. And then when it came it was nothing exciting. I appreciate that they use quality ingredients and the service was kind, but the consensus of my the group (from Texas, Seattle Utah and NorCal) is that this lunch counter is clearly for locals only.

Fyodor K.

Yelp
Oh, my goodness! We bought rib roast and when in oven we smell fish cooking! They must keep beef in where fish is! The only reason we paid crazy price there on beef is because neighbor tells us very good. Not! Also very bad help. They ignored us for maybe 5 minutes why they cutting up fish and they watch us!terrible place!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is busy! But they're the best. Put aside you're supermarket notions of grab and go, prepackaged fish from some country a thousand miles from here, or cheap questionably farm raised environmentally damaging products and be prepared to pay out a bit more in patience as well as your pocket book. Take a number, then contemplate the fresh product around you. Key city gets the best local, off the boat that day seafood. They also have access to great nw pasture raised meats and sausages. Sure.....you might have to wait, and yes they don't compete with Safeway or Qfc. But really...is this why you stepped through the door of such a tiny, off the beaten track store? Trust their recommendations. Let them guide you to the finest quality fresh local seafood and meat in the area.

Yelp
Not at all happy with Key Fish. Called a week in advance to feel the place out, find out what products were available and whether I needed to order in advance. Talked to a very informative and well versed man named Paul. He took the time to go over all the fish and seafood that would be available and the price of all the items. Here's where it goes askew: Hey Paul, should I place an order for next week? We will be on a family vacation at a resort in the area for three days and my mother, who is footing the bill, wants nothing more than fresh steamed mussels and clams in white wine, tomatoes, and parsley. Oh no Doug, says Paul. We will have all the pre mention crustaceans, no need for an advanced order. Really are you sure? You come we'll have it. Show up a week later... No clams, 1lb of mussels and and only 4 crabs left in the store. Got the obligatory oh we're sooo sorry, you should have put in an order over the phone in advance. Where's Paul? Not on the premise! Two QFC's and a Safeway later we fulfilled moms request. As a side note the clams were cheaper by a buck a lb. at QFC. I will give Key another go round next year, but only if they take my seafood request in advance to assure I get what, and all I want.

Yelp
Friendly staff and fresh fish. What more can you ask for? We bought a couple of live dungenous crabs for $7.50 a pound (came out to $17 a crab) and a halibut steak for dinner. Yummy! The live crabs are very lively so I don't think they are old. Easy to find and lots of parking. Check it out!
google avatar

Janelle S.

Yelp
We came in here for fresh crabs and were not disappointed! The staff was very friendly and helpful with our purchase. We told the man behind the counter that we were walking back to the ferry, so he helped us construct handles for the crab box out of tape! We briefly took our crabs to the bar for a quick drink, so on our way past the store and back to the ferry, the same guy came out to make sure we were doing ok. Great customer service!

Yelp
This was a great stop. Loved all the smoked fish we tried and brought. The oysters where so good too.

Yelp
We went in search of a seafood market, having rented a beach house for a few days near Port Ludlow. We ended up in Port Townsend in search of a grocery store and yelped a seafood market. I would have thought we'd find one on every block, but that's not the case. We found Key City and came out with steamers!! They were the best clams we've had in years!!! Friendly staff, clean store... Yummy clams, happy, happy tastebuds!!

Skittles G.

Yelp
I'd give zero stars if possible. This place claims to be a seafood/butcher store. They have a live crab tank and yet if you go in for a live one, you don't only get weird-beard "Casey". ( (Total rude attitude,) but an equally weird lecture about he "possibly couldn't determine a life" when we asked him to get up a live crab , meanwhile surrounded by dead things and offered to sell us an already cooked crab. Why be in crab business? Alarmingly, I discovered he's a co-manager to boot! Will NEVER be back.
google avatar

Debbie J.

Yelp
Wow recommended by a local and & not disappointed! Came out smiling $63 lots later. Great selection & service "to go" only. They carry live crab, all sorts of fresh seafood & fish, smoked salmon & tuna, etc., poultry, sausages, good/cool assortment of hard ciders, wine, crackers, cheeses. We wound up w lots including the fresh sole he stuffed w his house made crab cake @ no extra charge & suggestion how to bake it w wine, butter & parm. Also got smoked fishes, cheese, currant cider. They even had suggestions on which smoked fishes to grab for gifts plus us. It all sounded yummy and I wasn't even hungry :-). They own a local restaurant(s) too don't remember the name. Right up there w memorable places in Alaska & Maine. We'll be back!

Paul W.

Yelp
Great place, I'm stuck here in Port Townsend waiting for ACI marine to pull their heads out and fix my boat. Key city fish was great they took my Halibut, vacuum packed froze it and shipped it to my Hone in Arizona.
google avatar

Laurel M.

Yelp
The staff is awesome! They were very helpful and fun. We picked up some Halibut and Salmon for the grill, as well as the Seaweed Salad. The food was amazing! Loved it.
google avatar

Dennis B.

Yelp
Best place for meat and seafood in PT. Knowledgeable staff , fresh fish!
google avatar

Patricia T.

Yelp
The best place to get scallops. And the best customer service to boot... Thank you for all of you helpful information.

Paul C.

Yelp
Dungeness crab was most definitely not fresh. Smelt strongly of ammonia -- haven't had this problem with seafood in years. Owner had attitude & was aggressive.

Chris M.

Yelp
I hope this is the right place. We heard that the fish company by Blue Moose has the best clam chowder in PT. We went in there but they were all busy.

Diane S.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS THE BEST fish/meat store I've ever been in. The prices are great, the fish is fresh, and the staff is helpful and always excellent.
