Flightpath Coffee Sells Low-Cost Grocery Items to Laid-Off Austin Workers | Eater Austin

"A separate effort called Kristin’s Commissary was created to sell extra produce specifically to people who had lost jobs, supplying neighbors via Nextdoor with at-cost oats, rice, and other essentials at the actual cost with no markup; when neighbors began donating money to the cause, donations often dropped prices to essentially free (one $50 donation could buy a case of eggs, a 50-pound sack of pinto beans, and rice). Prices fluctuated with daily costs—at one point flour was 45 cents per pint, oats 72 cents, and eggs $1.98 a dozen—and the program runs on an honor system (no proof of job loss required) with the edict “take as much as you need, and leave the rest for the person behind you.” The commissary has been winding down as people obtained unemployment benefits and stimulus checks." - Nina Hernandez

If you are in the keys, come here to get your groceries! Great deal on meat, and look for the specials and their generic brand. They will be cheaper than outside. Also, short walk from hotel and rv park, so we brought our wagon and walked!

A great place to buy groceries at a reasonable price. Good selection of produce and meats. Nice quality steaks. For a smaller commissary, it has a lot to offer. Shout out to LaSonya, who always had a big smile and made me feel welcome.

Love this little shop...wonderful for gifts and anything else. Enjoyed shopping at the vegetables section. Prices weren't as high as it looks. Grab a complimentary chocolate sample 😋

Fantastic commissary. It is ob the smaller side, but is well stocked with a wide variety. Better than some of the larger commissaries I have been in.

Older lady with long dreads not friendly at all. First and last time going through her line.

BEAUTIFUL Customer Service A ++ • Lines are never too long. • Greets and smiles (not always but most of the time.) • SUPER Helpful employees •Always seeing employees put carts away • Environment clean & neat Downfall: Runs out of stock real fast (ground turkey) & close a wee bit early. Over all- Thank-You for giving us a warm welcome to Key West! ♡

Google
Great commissary, they had most of my favorite products. I was hoping for a little more vegan/ plant based options but they had enough that I would definitely come back. The customer service was excellent , very friendly staff.

It has the basics. Produce has always been fresh. Store is clean. The frozen food section is my least favorite part, always low on selection, variety, and never fully stocked. Shelves are often bare. Staff is friendly too.

Yelp
Four stars instead of five only because this commissary is very, very small. It has the basics, but lacks gourmet and specialty items (e.g., the most exotic mustard option is Grey Poupon), any fresh fish, a deli, etc. The produce is OK, but generally not as fresh as the local grocery stores. Sometimes the store randomly runs out of staples, like milk and chicken. On the plus side: the meat department is a standout. You can't get a decent steak to save your life in either of the local grocery chains, but you can (at least sometimes -- selection varies) get great ones at the commissary. The staff is friendly and efficient. Acres of free parking, of course. And, you just can't beat the prices. A great local resource for the military community. Please remember to tip the hard working baggers.

Yelp
This is a great commissary! It's very clean, never crowded, and for being as far from the mainland as it is, there's lots of selection. Great selection of fruits and veggies. I will concede that the meat selection isn't as vast as other local grocers and the seafood selection is non-existent unless you are good with frozen, name-brand fish. The employees are very polite and friendly, which is not the norm for DoD commissaries. The commissary is located less than a block from the on base lodging at Dredgers Key. Plenty of parking and right next to the PX/NEX.

Yelp
I am giving this little store 5 stars because: A. The store its self is small but packs a punch when it comes to variety. B. While organic choices are at best minimal, the have been trying to encorporate more organic items, however, if people don't purchase then they cannot justify more organic. C. Bravo to whoever is in charge of the meat department. For a long time I was purchasing meat that was at expiration or very close, now meat is plenty fresh, good quality meat that is mostly well within expiration. The steaks are as superior Angus cuts and are much cheaper that Winn Dixie or Publix. D. The store is very clean and well spaced for a store of it's size, the cashiers are friendly and only work for tips! It just dawned sp. on me that I need to up my tips as I tipped the last time what I use to tip ten years ago.....yikes! I am truly greatful to have this store as they provide most of the necessities that my family need, for orgnanic I can purchase elsewhere. Living in the keys, we need to save every penny we can and thanks to our local commissary we can do just that!

Yelp
This commissary is of decent size to serve the military patrons and visitors with ID in Key West. We found most of the items we came for, except there were no reduced fat choices for sliced cheese and few choices for diet sodas. The produce section was small and not all items looked fresh. But the prices were fair, so we stocked up for our two week Florida Keys vacation. Right next door is the Navy Exchange, which had the other items we needed: a cheap Styrofoam cooler we could use and then leave behind (no room on our flight home), freezer packs (although we also used frozen water bottles) to keep the food cold, and a useful variety of other things for our vacation.

Yelp
Cheaper than out in town by atleast 30%! I shop here all the time. Support your troops :). Small but has what I need.
