On the Grid : Keys Cafe

"With more than 9 locations spanning the Twin Cities, you may have stumbled across a Keys Cafe before: but this is the original, my friends. If the huge portions don't keep you coming back, the waitresses (sure to call you "Honey") and classic diner atmosphere will." - Studio On Fire

The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"If you get one thing off of Keys’ classic diner-style breakfast menu, make it the chocolate chip banana pancakes. These cakes have the slightest hint of sugar in the batter, which allows the mellow sweetness of the banana slices to shine through — not to mention the chocolate chips, which take on a delicious, toffee-like char when they hit the griddle. The omelets, hashes, and pie are also great breakfast bets. Keep an eye on the restaurant’s homepage for updates. Online ordering is available." - Stacy Brooks

My family and I stopped at Keys for breakfast over Memorial Day weekend. There was no wait, but the place was busy! They were able to seat 5 of us right away and got our drink orders. They have an awesome little bakery counter and coolers with soups and take out hot dishes - we didn’t need any of this after our meals but it was nice to see. I ordered the Cajun Breakfast and the portion was huge and so so delicious. My fiancé ordered the biscuits and gravy and his brother got the Eggs Benedict. All delicious. Not pictured, but my daughters both got pancakes (shaped like Mickey Mouse) with whipped cream and m&ms and sides bacon. The pancakes are enormous and really really tasty! We highly recommend Keys to anyone and everyone! They also have meatless options.

Google
The food is super delicious. I truly love coming here. As a Georgia boy this place gives me a Lil piece of home. If you are ever on the fence about eating here. Don't be! For the portions and great food you get you can't beat the prices.

Google
My cousin and I had a delightful meal at Keys Cafe. Our server was phenomenal! The food was delicious. The bakery case looked amazing and the items we tried were quite tasty. The walkways between seats are a bit narrow. It would be tricky to navigate a wheelchair to the restroom or further into the restaurant. Otherwise it's a charming place. I'm looking forward to dining again. Thank you!

Google
Keys Cafe exceeded our expectations. The eggs benedict & large cinnamon role did not disappoint. Good portions and great prices, especially for the location. It was evident they have a loyal following.

Google
Keys Cafe is an iconic St Paul restaurant. I haven't been in any of their locations since 1992, when my mother's husband bought me breakfast at the Robert Street location. Though much has changed since then, from the prices on the menu to the grey hairs on my head. Other things, however, have not; like the quality of the food. The proprietors should be proud. We have dined at many places, from rubbing elbows at some local dives to raising our pinkies while we tip our cups with the upper crust. That menu I can say is good. Comfort food at its finest. The portions are spot on. Save us a table, we will be back.

So, lunch today was a real adventure. We strolled in around 11:30, and the place was jumpin'! Luckily, the hostess was a total rockstar and got us seated in no time. Our server was top-notch, and we chowed down on some seriously tasty grub, including a cinnamon roll that'll haunt my dreams. Those blueberry pancakes? Yeah, they were enormous. We'll be back, no question.

Google
Great food here and service too! Sometimes there is a bit of a wait and parking lot is busy. But worth the weight. Breakfast is amazing and always prepared perfectly and comes out fairly fast too . Wait staff are friendly and check in often. Good atmosphere too. Can be a bit loud but able to hear and talk with out raising the voice at least. Also the bakery and rolls are really good!!! Definitely worth checking out Key's has it right

Vivien

Google
A casual dining space with a relaxed atmosphere. We had hot chocolate and 2 types of pies which both tasted good. Price was reasonable. Will definitely pay another visit to try their breakfast and lunch menus. I know this franchise has few other locations around the twin cities.

Yelp
We are in town for a conference and just stumbled across this place and boy howdy are we glad we did. The food is fantastic and the service wonderful. I had spaghetti which was a special and really one of the best I've ever eaten. And the places isn't even Italian! Don't think of leaving until you tried some of delicious baked goods particularly the rhubarb cream cheese cake.

Yelp
I stopped in for my favorite eggs benedict at 9 am on a Wednesday at the Raymond Avenue shop. It wasn't busy at all and I seated myself. And then nothing, not a greeting, or asking if I wanted coffee to start, nothing. There appeared to be one server for about five or six tables and no one seated at the counter. My server walked by once or twice." Ten minutes later, still no one approched me. I left after stopping to tell and young lady at the check out what had (not) happened. Hey folks, I'm not coming back. Find some new help.

Yelp
Classic family owned restaurant. I visit this location the most, due to proximity to my house. Very satisfying food, reasonably priced. The decor is anything special - standard family diner stlye. But the service is always good and prompt, and the food hits the spot. Very reliable, if not spectacular. Solid, and would recommend. No complaints

Yelp
My fav all American homemade cooking from scratch from bread to cookies to turkey dinner to breakfast omelets. The best hash browns in the nation! They seem to be very busy at all hours but the food comes out piping hot everytime. I like they have butter cubes at the tables I usually get there very early for breakfast to avoid the long lines or an hour before they close for dinner. Anything in btwn is a really long wait. I like the big booths it feels very homey.
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
They're always busy during breakfast and lunch. Nice little eating place, more like your mom and Pop store. Always like their turkey dinner. Customer service is good. The place is a little bit crowd what is doable? Nice choice of manual where you can have breakfast throughout the day.

Yelp
It's a classic breakfast spot that you will want to come back every now and then. I like simple stuff like French toast, scrambled eggs that made right, this is the place to go. The staff are fast, humble and friendly. We grabbed a couple of scones on way out, yum yum, too good, when i remembered to take photos, they were all gone. Next time!

Yelp
Keys is great breakfast spot, although I'm not much of a breakfast person, my kids love it whether the Minneapolis, Saint Paul, or Roseville location. Ambiance 4/5 Average diner spot with open kitchen to look in on the cooks (Mpls location). The Roseville and Saint Paul location is a bit bigger than the Minneapolis location. If you like a cozy down home feel, the Minneapolis location for sure. It gives Roseanne bar and I'm here for it. Service 4/5 Average service, nothing to write home about, but will do. Food/Drinks 4/5 Very affordable and great meetup spot for anything to family outing to business meetups. Their mushroom omelet disappoints as there from the can, I feel shortchanged. Price: Affordable. I love they sell the Strawberry jam, its a staple of the restaurant. Great for toast and a light snack. Overall 4/5 parking for Roseville location can be frustrating due to the little parking lot. Don't come midday, that's forsure.

Yelp
Keys has been around since 1975 and remains a popular restaurant in a number of locations. Unfortunately, they closed the two locations that were closest to me, so it's been a minute since I've been to the one in Roseville. The place has an attractive and comfortable vibe to it and it's the kind of place you want to linger. We were there for breakfast, since I was craving an omelet and Keys does that particularly well. I was pleased that the waitress brought me a small pot of coffee, along with my coffee mug. This is increasingly rare, but appreciated, since I don't have to track down a waitress for a coffee refill. (The coffee was excellent, btw). My wife and I were there before 8 am, so we were able to get a table right away, although it was filling up fast. My omelet did NOT disappoint. It was exactly what I was craving. The "Build your own omelet" contains five ingredients of your choice. I chose onion, green pepper, ham, bacon, and cream cheese. The quality and quantity were spot-on and couldn't have asked for a better made omelet. It came with wheat toast and strawberry jam. I only finished it because I was so hungry. My wife had the scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. The eggs were well made and the hashbrowns were crispy on the top and bottom, soft inside. All around perfection. The only complaints I have is that the service was exceedingly slow. We were in no rush, so it didn't bother us, but it took well over 30 minutes to get our food from the time we ordered. The other issue was a surcharge for using a credit card, which I'm not a fan of. However, all in all, this was a solid four our of five stars and would have been five out of five except for the two issues I mentioned.

Yelp
I mean what's not to love? Great seating and atmosphere. Good service. Outstanding food! There's nothing here I've tried that I didn't like! From breakfast to kids meals to pasties and fish sandwiches. So good. Always a staple.

Yelp
Too early to pick up our eye glasses so we found Keys. Tiny wait, quick service, huge servings. I had biscuits and gravy (Yum!) and Hubby had chicken fried steak. Gosh they were good. So glad we found a Keys this morning!

Yelp
First time at this restaurant! Went this morning (8/6/24) Love the atmosphere in here! Great service by everyone very nice!! The pancakes here are huge the size of manhole covers!! Great bacon great everything!!! I would come back again for everything they have a lot to offer on their menu!! Love Keys Cafe!
google avatar

Yelp
Had brunch with the family and we are from out of town. So glad we had the opportunity to visit I'm still thinking about their pecan pie! The cinnamon rolls and all the cakes and pies make it hard to choose! I can say other family members got whole pies. Breakfast was so good everyone enjoyed their food. Large portions and all were full! We had a great server it was so busy but they handled it well and you can tell it's a family friendly place young and old enjoyed the place!

Yelp
The service was terrible. We waited 10 minutes for our water, watched the waitress take orders from 2 tables that sat down after us. When this was pointed out to the waitress she made an excuse. Forgot a side of toast and clearly doesnt know the meaning of customer service
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
Visited for lunch. Always good food at Keys. Very busy, as always, do we had to wait a few minutes but not bad. Efficient professional servers. They are taking care of a bunch of tables but didn't neglect any a sex far as I could see. Had the grilled BLT which was great! Other orders at the table were chicken salad sandwich, turkey dinner, corn beef hash breakfast and all were reported as fantastic. Never had disappointing food here. Very generous servings. Cafe atmosphere.

Yelp
A Friday noon lunch; busy with a wait however went by quickly & we enjoyed the waiting area though a bit cramped...made for time to look at baked goods, the menu, & people watch. Server was attentive and informative. Partner had a Rachel with thick sliced roasted turkey. I had the white chicken chili & a cold meatloaf sandwich - tasty. The chili was a cup portion; was so good I should have ordered the bowl.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Our server was nice. Food took a long time to get, and others who ordered after us got theirs before us. The kids meal was very disappointing. I asked what the koala cake was and was told it was just a pancake. However, it comes piled with whipped cream and candy. For a kid with food sensitivities, this was unexpected. The food didn't taste good and he didn't eat it. My toast, potatoes, and eggs were all DRY!

Sheldon W.

Yelp
We often go during the lunch period, but have experienced no undue delay in ordering or delivery of our meals. It seems a bit crowded, but it's quiet enough for conversing without raising our voices. My favorite is the chicken Philly. Serving sizes are more than adequate, and we always have leftovers to enjoy again later.

Yelp
I stopped by here for a team breakfast for work and it was exactly what you would expect from this type of restaurant. It has very strong suburban diner vibes with somewhat retro/outdated decor, a big old pastry display in the front, and a huge menu. I ordered a raspberry iced tea and corned beef hash. The raspberry iced tea was a classic soda fountain one, not fresh which is okay, but it was separated from the fountain drinks so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. As for the corned beef hash, it was good but nothing special. They sort of just plopped some on my plate and called it a day as you can see in the photo. The portion was a great size and I had leftovers for lunch, but it was missing something, maybe eggs or something of the sort. I am sure it could be added but as one of the more expensive entrees on the menu, I was hoping for a more complete meal. Looking around at all the other tables and talking to my teammates after the meal, people seemed to all agree just a good, average place that can accommodate a large group.
google avatar

Jerry H.

Yelp
In the past we ordered from forest lake, Woodbury or white bear key's never had a problem unfortunately some of the key's don't offer this service anymore. So we tried Roseville 2nd year in a row we ordered the Thanksgiving take out meal for six. NEVER AGAIN. Turkey, Stuffing were so dried out and was terrible. I was really embarrassing to have company over for food to taste like this.

Yelp
I have been in Minnesota for 10 days. I have tried different places to eat while in this state. Let me tell you this place is absolutely amazing. Clean, old fashion welcoming atmosphere. The waitress/waiters are attentive and for the volume of people the food came hot and In reasonable time. Don't let me tell you about the portions!! They are not stingy with their portions. The best!!! Love it!!

Carol Ann K.

Yelp
Seven in our group, mid afternoon on a Saturday. We were able to sit together! Food is very yummy and service good.

Jane H.

Yelp
Best place to eat in Twin Cities. All meals are made from scratch and are delicious. Love the service, the friendly atmosphere and the quality of staff.
google avatar

Yelp
My family and I stopped in for breakfast early Saturday morning. The staff was friendly and the place was packed but they found us a table for 5 quickly. Our drinks came out fast and our waitress made sure that our kids meals came out very quickly so they didn't have to wait. She made great recommendations from the menu and always had a smile on her face. The food was fresh, hot and had great flavor. We will be back again and again.

Greg P.

Yelp
Farmers omelette is the best. Ask for their homemade bread. You will probably be taking home a Fido bag. . What a combo. !
google avatar

Yelp
it was my first time in Minnesota and i wanted to support a local spot, so happy i found this place! we went around brunch time, it was very busy, and rightfully so! amazing, kind servers and hosts/hostesses, fantastic food, cute "home" feeling decor. loved the family owned aspect! definitely a place i would recommend, i ordered the fried fish sandwich and loved it. my grandma said that hers might have been the best rueben she's ever had!
google avatar

Kathleen K.

Yelp
I had the BEST omelette at Keys this morning. The diner vibes were top notch. Excellent server and hostess and a short wait to get in. It was bustling! I really enjoyed the homemade bread and jam -- great coffee as well. Very fast service and it looked like they had loads of doordash orders going out. Lots of parking in the shopping center area. Close to bus lines on Lexington.

Senaida A.

Yelp
Today I went to keys cafe for breakfast, I ordered a hot chocolate with whip cream and marshmallows . the Waitress at the Roseville location put's a dirty spoon in my hot chocolate and served it to me. I didn't see how dirty the spoon was until I took it out of my mouth. I asked to speak to the manager. The kitchen manager comes out and I tell him what happened and he's laughing about it so I said I wanted to speak to the owner. I didn't Order any food. I ended up walking out of the restaurant. The spoon had dried up food and who know what else on it.

Todd O.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the service 100% awesome I enjoy coming here on a weekly base with my family of five We come here every Sunday after church and even during the middle of the week That's how much we like this family diner,

Don B.

Yelp
Food: Worse experience ever. Bacon burned. Pancakes rubbery and tough. Hashbrowns sloppy. Eggs. Were just ok. Service: Good. Ambiance: Bad. Too crowded. Too many tables.
google avatar

Cristina T.

Yelp
We have ordered family style Thanksgiving dinners from several places around the twin city's. We chose Key's in Roseville for our dinner yesterday. The entire meal was excellent! The staff really knew what they were doing; picking it up in the back of the restaurant while staying in our vehicle was very efficient. We did choose to go inside and pick up more potatoes and gravy. It was very busy, but every staff member was very friendly and helpful. Thank you Key's for an excellent Thanksgiving dinner!
google avatar

Emilie L.

Yelp
We love the food at Keys every time we are there! There is a laid back atmosphere, a full menu (without overdoing it), and it's usually busy, but you can still get a table. The 4 stars is because I've had 2 or 3 experiences where the wait staff was inattentive or unavailable. Overall - well worth it!!
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
I appreciate the Roseville Keys for their fast service, seating both inside and out, and delicious menu. I've never experienced the team "short-staffed" like many businesses recently but even if they were, I can't tell. The experience is always a pleasant one whether I'm dining in or doing take out. I highly recommend a slice or two of the house cake - it is to DIE for. Thanks for always making each trip fantastic!
google avatar

Luis E C.

Yelp
Recommend by good friends the portion are very good more food then plates!! Pancakes bigger then the plate. When you order coffee they leave you the pitcher. Chairs are comfy me being a bigger dude looks like the booths have movable tables. Food had great flavors and plenty of condiments on the table as well. Very family oriented atmosphere great people too.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service and food . Greeted and seated in a very sort time. Staff is courteous and friendly. Don't miss this restaurant

Samuel B.

Yelp
I just moved into the area and eat out often. i tip generally 20$ when i order an inexpensive meal by myself. I have eaten at this restaurant 4 times and 3 of the 4 times something went wrong. This time I ordered a chicken caeser salad. I got a salad with chicken and Italian dressing. no croutons and no egg like the menu suggests. I ate the chicken and black olives. told the server and I ordered scrambled eggs bacon and potatoes. she took my plate, agreed that there are no croutons on the salad and then charged me full price. 17.00$. I paid 40$ plus a 20$ tip = 60$ for scrambled eggs, order of bacon, potatoes and a piece of chicken. I believe a piece of chicken on the ala carte menu is 2.50$ or something. there are many places to eat in the city, there is no need to stop at Keys. Samuel

Greg G.

Yelp
On the plus side, the portions at Key's are very generous, so much so that even if you have a healthy appetite and are very hungry you'll be lucky if you finish half your meal. (Even the pancakes fill an entire plate to the point where they'll hang over the side of the plate.) Also, the wait staff provides good service and is attentive, even when busy. On the not-so-plus side, with the exception of the salmon benedict, the food is mediocre and not very flavorful. (We were tempted to ask our server to send it back to the kitchen and tell the cook to put some flavor on it.) The hash browns weren't crispy like they should be and even a small milk is grossly overpriced. Lastly, don't they ever bother to wipe clean the outside of the syrup bottles? No matter where we touched it, the outside of the bottles were sticky. During the course of our meal, we had to wash our hands twice after using the syrup just to get all the stickiness off. If others order a meal that requires syrup, perhaps it's advisable to bring some wet wipes with you. Key's offers standard cafe/diner fare, but there's really nothing exceptional about it no matter how many years it's been in business.

Yelp
Keys Cafe & Bakery is well known in my community for having a wide variety of meal options, large portions and a home cooked taste. We were greeted by Tammy, the best server I have ever experienced in this lifetime. I ordered the Chicken Wild Rice Soup, which has been a recent craving of mine and NO OTHER location chain in Minnesota makes it as good as the Roseville location. I also ordered the meatloaf dinner, which wasn't my favorite but I could see how it's an award winning meatloaf and one of their best sellers. Because I did not enjoy the meatloaf dinner, Tammy removed it from our bill and I greatly appreciate that. There was a gnat that landed on my peas (that were cold when they arrived to the table) and crawled thru them which was, disgusting to say the least and it made me paranoid about the remaining food we had on the table. I didn't mention it but just asked Tammy to remove the plate from our presence. My friend ordered the Avocado Burger with waffle fries and they def enjoyed their meal, though they mentioned they wished the presentation was more "stacked" for the $17 price. I absolutely love Keys and all they have to offer. From T-Shirts & Sweatshirts, to frozen take and bakes, an amazing bakery and wide menu, this is such a great place to meat and enjoy friends and family, or just a quiet meal alone. The staff is phenomenal. Warm greetings, smiles and a family feel. I love how it feels like everyone is enjoying their work and doing it with love. Very seldomly do I feel like they fall short, which is why I didn't complain. This was the first time I've ever had a flawed experience with Keys. Tammy, if you ever get the chance to see this review, we send prayers to you and your family. May God continue to bless your sweet mother with good health and I pray that you all have the chance to celebrate her birthday in February. 83 is a big deal! Thanks for sharing with us and providing such a phenomenal experience. Your kindness, professionalism and joyous heart was the highlight of my day. Thanks for being who you are, and putting a genuine effort into ensuring a quality experience while dining. Keys Cafe in Roseville has a very special place in my heart. Even with the mishaps of my last visit, 10/10 I will always recommend.

Anthony P.

Yelp
"Menu card price $1.85"? We buy $$$$'s in gift cards. Never seen this before and they don't tell you about the charge.

Yelp
Quick, friendly, and delicious! I was seated right way. Ordered a hot caramel latte, the cinnamon French Toast with sausage links, and a slice of banana cream pie. Everything was really good! The pie slice is huge, I couldn't finish it myself. I'll definitely be back.

Isabel G.

Yelp
Food was fantastic! Friendly people with great customer service. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
I didn't make any reservations for a busy Saturday but was happy they got us seated fairly quick. The staff were nice and friendly. The soup was delicious and satisfying for a cold winter day. My table and I didn't feel pressured to leave since we only ordered light meals.

Leo M.

Yelp
Great service great food and the best hospitality, they are the best and the restaurant is beautiful the ambiance is the best

Yelp
I usually eat breakfast here. It's always good. I'm not sure about lunch or dinner from here but I'm sure it's good as well. They have tasty cakes and pastries here as well. I ordered my nephews birthday cake from here last minute. They were so helpful and got it done nicely especially for it to have been so short notice.

Chloe B.

Yelp
sending lots of love to everything you do!! keep it up. turkey for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
They have a chicken tender sandwich that is very good. The rest of the dishes like the meatloaf and Cajun breakfast were edible but I would never order them again. Hometown Perkins with some extra frills.

Valerie C.

Yelp
Strolled into Keys on a Thursday night at 7:15 pm, completely unaware that they closed at 7:30. The staff was perfectly accommodating, never mentioning that they were ready to close. As usual, the food was GREAT and the service impeccable. Never tried to "hurry us up." I appreciate their attitude and great customer service. Next time I'm there - which will be soon - I'm going to leave a bigger tip! THANK YOU
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast, but their lunches! A great place to eat! Food is constantly good-always hot with a good selection. Staff is great, service is quick and coffee is hot (with a pot on the table).

Yelp
We went to Keys Cafe in Blaine, MN and found out that they closed the business. Then Yelp led us to this location. Same food, same service. We had driven quite a ways for breakfast at Keys. We were not disappointed. We ordered omelette, no carbs and coffee. I wish I had taken a picture to share. Some other time.

Yelp
This is a cute little bakery. I expected it to be old and dingy but it was updated and modern. I really liked that they had blackboards and games on the walls for kids to play as well as lots of coloring materials. My first impression was kind of not the best. The girl that sat us had a sweatshirt on for keys that on the the back says "why are you following me" I know its supposed to be cute and funny however I felt like that was a weird thing to put on the hostess sweatshirt. I also found it weird that they all had sweatshirts on for their uniform but quickly learned why. It was FREEZING in there. We got the hot turkey sandwich and the grilled cheese with a bowl of tomato soup. None of our food was very hot which I don't really understand since it wasn't that busy and we were near the kitchen. The turkey was really good on the turkey sandwich. The tomato soup is sweeter than most and has tomato chunks in it. The waitress had persuaded me to get the more expensive sandwich and soup option because I got a cookie with it, which she wasn't going to give me and I had to ask for. I got the sugar cookie, its good but not anything spectacular. Overall, we didn't really love key's but aren't opposed to trying it again sometime with different items.
