LISTEN UP...I usually don't post. The Senegalese Dibi was TERRIBLE! Why rob customers of their hard earn cash with a meal full of a bunch of grease & fat-bones? I'm so very dissatisfied and disappointed! The Plantains were greasy too!!! Very sweet, yet DEFINITELY not worth the hard earned $42 worth of pennies spent. There were huge portions of Rice and the Rice/Grilled vegs. had more flavor than the Meat! This not something I would chase down or buy again. Look at the pictures... the big piece one big hard bone! The other tiny pieces fat... bones!!!

I’ve been visiting KG’s for 4 years now and they have always been consistent with food both quality and taste, and service. If I could make one complaint I would say sometimes the lamb dibi (pictured) could be cooked a little longer. Other than that, it’s one of my favorite “hole in the wall” restaurants.

I rarely put a good review but this place is so good they deserve 5 stars . The staff were very nice and the place is clean and friendly. I had a goat stew with Fufu and it was very good. I will definitely come back again. Also it’s Halal ! 💯. Amazing place

Wow very impressed at a very reasonable price your going to get delicious food very very clean restaurant and amazing service highly recommend also get there homemade drinks they are all good definitely coming back!!!!

I wish I could post pictures of the food but unfortunately, the food was devoured before I could get pictures. Hands down, some of the best food I have ever eaten in my life. I ordered the Jerk Chicken with rice and beans and an order of plantains. The chicken was so tender, you didn't even need teeth to get it off the bone. It was spicy but addictively spicy and I kept wanting to go back for more. The plantains were a nice treat. Lightly sweet and tart with a savory note from the spices. Everything was seasoned generously and every bite was an explosion of delicious flavors. This is just straight up good cooking. No frills or gimmicks. I will be back to try more!

Great food at this little establishment. Absolutely delighted that we tried it. Tasty senegalese food, for a great price with big portions. The service was excellent, our server was so friendly and, although busy with takeout orders and other customers, kept checking on us to ensure we were taken care of. Will be back! Edit: I've gone back, and the food has continued to be amazing. The juices are made in house and are delicious. Portions are big, which is great for leftovers. Service was similarly excellent and I think I'll be adding this to my go to options for takeout. Keep it up!

The food was authentic and great! The customer service was warm and welcoming. Don’t expect to get in and out fast food style service. Though the wait time is not long, it is appropriate time to know that your food is prepared fresh. Everything tasted good. The Soup Kandja was my favorite. We requested our food to be in takeout containers but we did dine in and carry the some with us (the portions are plentiful).

This was my first visit! The food was delicious. I was looking for some more sauces and spices, but they do a good job making food that caters to the majority. The staff are helpful, kind, friendly, and accommodating. They really take care of their guest. I will definitely be back!

KG's menu features west African cuisine and includes options for Jamaican and American. They do a LOT of carry-out business. I ordered stewed goat w/rice & bean and plantains. It was served with a small dish of (very) tasty hot sauce. The meal arrived promptly and hot ... and was excellent. Was the stewed goat authentic Jamaican? I do not have a sufficient frame of reference, but it was tasty and I would indeed order it again ... but there are so many other things that I wish try. The dining room and men's room were both clean. The service was attentive without being obsequious. They allowed us to linger and catch-up. Will I return? Yes.

We went for the First Sunday of the Month Buffet and it was awesome. You walk in and pay first at the counter and it comes with a free lemonade. One thing we were not expecting was that you're not allowed to get your own food from the buffet. We grabbed plates and went for it, but they said they had to get everything for us. So it was a little weird because we all wanted to try a little of everything and they were giving us giant scoops so eventually we each just asked for a few things each and shared. It was all incredibly delicious. I really liked the fish especially. I'd go back for sure.

Food is damn good! I'm about to go there right now! The Food is for sure made with love.

I really enjoy KG's African American grill. I would say their menu is a combination of a variety of African and seemingly other cultural inspired cuisines. Meaning some was truly African American and some seemed more African and some seemed like other cultures too. Nevertheless, the food is quite tasty. My dining companion and I ordered the jerk salmon and really enjoyed it. We did not dine in as we took our order to fix but, the dining room seemed large and accommodating.

The food is wonderful. The clientele and the staff are cordial . Eating there is a wonderful experience.

I got out of work early, hubby and I decided to go out for lunch. So we took out our Samsung Phones, ran the app and saw this spot has been bookmarked. It's also a plus that it's not too far from where I work. After choosing a table, we scanned the menu and we ended up with these two choices. Maffeh: Lamb meat, stewed in a peanut butter sauce that gives it the rich and savory taste that I adore. Pair it up with regular white rice and go to town on it. It was so good,, I had to force myself to stop eating so I can at least pack some home. I'd totally order this again. Thiebu Yapp: Slowly simmered tender lamb and vegetables over a bed of fried rice. Move over pot roast, I would totally choose this dish over it. So many amazing flavors all at once. Yes I would definitely order this again. Both dishes were absolutely amazing. I can totally say that both dishes are pretty much Senegalese Comfort Food. Next time, I'll be looking forward to trying out some other dishes. The place is pretty nice. It's clean orderly and definitely a cozy spot. If you're looking for posh atmosphere, you've clearly come to the wrong place. This is my kind of spot. This is some of the most filling, flavorful food in the metro Detroit area. Definitely worth going out of your way for, super authentic, and a top tier meal.

My boyfriend recommended this place after trying it a few weeks ago, so I was excited when we ordered our food for lunch. We ordered the curry chicken entree, oxtail entree, and red snapper entree with a side of djollof rice and fufu. Every plate was full of distict seasoning and flavor. The red snapper was DELICIOUS! After filling up on yummy African cuisine, we were both happy and satisfied.

Food was excellent. We had Jerk Chicken. We really enjoyed the cabbage/vegetables that were on the side. Fast service. Diner type ambience.

I come to Detroit once a year and this is where I go as soon as I get off the plane. Always great food and pleasant staff. I have tried several dishes with no disappointments. They have a first Sunday buffet that I have never to, but it looks fabulous.

The food is amazing! So flavorful and well cooked. I've been a few times and its always consistent and delicious!

I've been dying to try this place and my girlfriend was visiting with me and she said she was too so we decided this was as good a time as any. We walked in no greeting sat down at a booth started looking at the menu my friend had to use the restroom so she did that still no acknowledgment that we were there so we decided to take our business elsewhere...... Went to the soul food restaurant on Cherry Hill... Where we were greeted when we walked in enjoyed the food immensely and we both agreed that we would go back. The macaroni and cheese is to die for I had rib tips next time I'll try the fried chicken and I also had collard greens which I didn't care for I never had them before so was curious. Oh and the yams were Ok.....I've read the reviews, I'm impressed sooo will try again maybe for the Sunday buffet!

I got Egusi stew with fufu plantain and chicken empanada. Rice included. I have been wanting to try African food for a while, especially Fufu. The food was fresh and so good. So many flavors and so filling. Can't wait to come back and try more.

The food was horrible! The meat was not tender or cooked. The whole crowd down graded the food. Its not like its my first time having KGs.

My employer gave us an extra PTO day this year as a Cultural Exploration Day. Being a fan of history, travel, and good food, my goal was to combine them all together and celebrate something outside of my normal comfort zone and WASPy upbringing. After researching various African holidays, I settled on Day of the Women from Namibia, which celebrates an important date in that nation's move toward independence, where women protested relocations that had been forced on their community by apartheid-era South African administrators. However, when I searched for a Namibian restaurant, I was disappointed to discover that NYC was my best bet. Undaunted, I turned to Yelp for help in finding a Sub-Saharan African restaurant, and it recommended KG's African-American Grill in Garden City. Sure, others might have been intimidated by the idea of driving 90 minutes one-way for lunch, but I figured that was a heck of a lot better than 9 hours to New York! Arriving long after the lunch rush was over, on entering the restaurant I walked up the counter and asked if I could still dine-in for lunch (with COVID staff and supply shortages, it is never safe to assume these days). The smiling young woman looked bemused by my question when she replied "of course!" and then invited me to peruse the menu. Excited by all the possibilities I could try, I carefully read over the full menu before settling on Thiebu Djeun, the Senegalese national dish. When she asked what I wanted to drink and I answered a fountain soda, one of the cooks piped up with a beautiful lilt to her voice and a big smile, that I should get one of the exotic juices which they make fresh on-site: ginger, sorrel, and baobab. Loving fresh ginger, I immediately requested the ginger, but the cook insisted that I try all three. As the woman behind the counter poured three sample-sized cups, I asked which one she preferred, and she said the baobab was her favourite. After trying them all, I agreed and requested a bottle. My order placed, I proceeded to a comfortable booth to take in the restaurant while awaiting my food. The establishment itself appeared to have upper and lower dining areas, with the upper being currently closed. The lower area was made up predominantly of comfortable booths plus a smattering of tables. The walls were decorated with beautiful paintings and pictures from Africa, while exotic music softly wafted out from hidden speakers (I fully expected to hear Georges Collinet narrating between songs!). As others have noted in their reviews, the entire restaurant was immaculately clean down to the finest detail, with not even the corner of a single drinking straw wrapper hiding under a table. In short order my food was delivered to my table, and it looked fantastic! The Thiebu Djeun was generously sized, and it tasted absolutely amazing! The rice had a rich, umami flavour from the fish stew, while the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. While I am not entirely sure what all the vegetables were (plantain? yam? carrot?), they were all perfectly cooked and tasted delicious, especially the cabbage (which is saying something, as I am not normally a huge cabbage fan). Throughout the course of my meal, the friendly staff checked in on me several times, always with warm friendly smiles. PROS: fantastic food, friendly staff, fastidiously clean restaurant CONS: None, other than I wish I lived about 90 minutes closer! Overall I rate KG's African-American Grill as being Excellent, and cannot wait to go back!

KG's African American Grill came to my job trough Fooda. I have had other African, Ethiopian & Jamaican food before and was really looking forward to a new restaurant for lunch. When the food is good I buy lunch & dinner. Not today... I ordered the Oxtail Stew: it came with 2 thin oxtails 1 potato and 1 lima bean. I chose red beans & rice which I was charged $1.00 extra. The food taste was just ordinary nothing to scream about and the rice was old. I was very upset because it cost $10.00 & tax. However I only payed $7.60. My job gives us a $3.00 subsidy just to make-up for the cafeteria closing due to C-19. So we try all these restaurants the good one come back, I hope not this one. Lunch is between 11:30 - 1:30pm, my bill was ranged up at 12:30pm. The server defiantly was rationing out the food. They were not prepared for that amount of people, but still serve the people in front of you. I started to say I changed my mind when I asked, "you only get 2 oxtails...". He just looked at me and didn't say anything because the man behind me wasn't our cousins. I use to live in Westland, Romulus & Canton and I know where this place is so I will give them another try. But not trough Fooda.

The oxtail dinner was very tuff and the curry goat was not goat meat at all tasty like beef and not cooked long enough. I will not be coming back there the last 2 time was bad not again.

So my daughter and her friends found some dishes they wanted to try from tick tock(i know lol) so they searched my yelp until they found exactly what they were looking for. So it was a mom with teenagers kinda trip. The place was empty except for the million pick up orders and grub hub pick ups. This place is obviously super popular and it is definitely because of the food and service. We had a young women who was waiting on us walk us through the menu. We had a great lunch! Everything we tried we loved especially all the appetizers.. which we were mostly full from but pushed through it lol. The kids had fun and we tried something new! Looks like they prolly usually have a buffet set up but prolly aren't using it during covid! If your looking for something new id definitely check this place out!

No meat on the oxtails just bones in my order, the Fufu was cold the macaroni was decent. I will try them again but if they actually sell me some oxtails with meat on them. It seems as if they intentionally giving out the thinnest oxtails to keep the thick ones for themselves lol . The restaurant is not a fancy place but it's more like an pick up and leave restaurant. The ambiance is so basic and not interesting to me at all it's giving hurry up and buy something then leave.

Open for dine-in! This is one of my favorite restaurants. I was so excited to find out that this outstanding Senegalese restaurant is open for dine-in again. I always enjoy conversing in French with the owners, and the food is consistently "top notch". In my opinion, it is "hands-down" one of the best restaurants in metro Detrot. My wife and I started off with beef and fish (mix of mackerel and red snapper) fattayas - "Senegalese empanada). Both were great. And I had Soup Kandja (okra stew with fish, Senegalese spices and palm oil) , which is served with white rice) and my wife had the grilled red snapper with jollof rice. Our dinners were outstanding! So happy to visit this restaurant again. Cannot wait to return to try another dish of this underrepresented cuisine, which makes this restaurant so special.

My husband wanted to try this place and so we did for some late lunch. The place was empty but was around 4pm. People were coming in for take out. The place was clean but very outdated. But I never judge a book by its cover. So when we walked in a woman had seated us. She later came over to ask for our drink orders. We looked through the menu not knowing what most of the stuff was but had description of food. My husband ended up getting the Maffuh and I ended up ordering the Thiebu yapp. We sat there conversating and listening to the music trying to figure out what kind of music and language it was. When the food came it looked and smelled so good. We were both hungry and dove right into the food. It was delicious and had enough food to take home. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try.

This has become my go-to location for authentic African(west African particularly) cuisine. Their food is delicious. My faves are the jhollof rice, plantains. Oxtail stew, cabbage and snapper. The owners and staff are extremely kind, professional and accommodating. I highly recommend them. I wish I had some pix. I'll update the review the next time I go.

Myself, and two other ladies from church went on the first Sunday of the month when they have the all you can eat buffet, and we really enjoyed it. The food and service was amazing and they had a large selection of vegan options. It's was worth every cent that I paid!

Well. This place is a gem. I was tired of eating the same stuff.. chicken, seafood, turkey, seafood, an occasional red meat. So I went to YELP! Where else right?! So I was just browsing, nothing caught my eye until I seen the "close to you" and KGs african cuisine popped up. And of course I had to find out what other yelpers said. And I TOTALLY AGREE with my comrades! This place ROCKS! The meat was so tender that it melted in your mouth, I ordered oxtail and lamb with vegetables and cabbage because I don't eat rice. But I was NOT disappointed. The cabbage was crunchy yet soft (huh?) Yes it was BOTH. And very flavorful not at all salty. So hard NOT to make it salty. And I was surprised that the mixed vegetables also had flavor, usually people just blanch or stem vegetables with no seasoning but not here. Nothing but flavor. And I was surprised that the vegetables weren't the prepackaged corn, greenbeans carrots mixture, but actually real vegetables. (Even though it was a green beans and carrot mixture with other vegetables (LOL). I will definitely make that 35 minute trip there. Oh and I got a boaba(?) Drink. I still dont know what's in it but it's DELISH, it's sweet and creamy, but not to sweet which is good due to my being on keto, but I will keep ordering it until I figure it out and no I'm not going to ask what's in it, where's the fun in that?! Lol. Another thing I enjoyed was how CLEAN it is. They have plastic on the tables to keep the table clothes clean. They even have clean seats, a pet peeve of mine is when restaurants wipe the food off the table onto the seats and expect us to sit on dirty seats. Smh. But I digress, They do have a buffet but it's only offered on Sundays( call for availability) But this place is so quaint and the staff is so nice and cheerfull.. please enjoy my friends, and I hope I will find my fellow yelpers there soon!! First African Buffet and was very excited that I went 30 min ahead and rushed in as soon the clock ticked 1pm. Me and My friend are the first people so got the freedom to choose our table and the waitress Nay was friendly and explained about all the dishes. Started with Chicken stew which was amazing and everything right after that was awesome. Especially "Maffe" curry is top notch. Lamb rice, fish were my other favorites. Buffet costs $15.99 Pros : -------- Amazing Food Friendly Staff Decent Ambience Free Parking Clean restroom Cons: ------- They should start the buffet on Saturday too. I will return for sure.

I am always on the lookout for that unique food experience. Something that will blow away my culinary senses. KG's African - American Grill has done it. When we walked into this restaurant we were graciously greeted by one of the owners. It felt like she was inviting us into her home. She walked us through the menu and answered all of our questions. We started with the Fataya( deep-fried empanada/pasty-like ). We ordered beef and fish. My kids devoured the beef ones. The dipping sauce was very good. It came in both mild and hot. The hot sauce made you sweat a little. In both sauces, a little fish sauce was added. Not too much. It gave it a good background flavor without being overpowering. My wife had the Curry goat. Excellent. Reminded me of St. Tomas Virgin Islands. I had the Maffeh( Peanut butter stew with lamb, spices and tomatoes ). It was good. My wife loved it. She loved the added fish sauce. For my son, I ordered him the Senegalese grilled chicken. Spices were most excellent ! We all sampled it until my son protested. My daughter wanted the kids menu. She ordered a hamburger with Sweet potato fries. She said the burger was good. The sweet potato fries were spot on. With one of the dishes came an Onion sauce. Wow! What a taste trip. I love it. Another dish came with fried Plantains. Good, very good. My daughter wrapped up her meal with Apple pie. She said it was the best that she ever had. For those of you that don't like such cuisine, they have an American menu also. We were told on Sundays that they have a buffet. Yep. We will be there this Sunday !

Enjoyed the fried red snapper, lamb chops and curry chicken. Jollof rice was good too. Fufu was good but I couldn't get pass the texture. Overall great food, seasoned well. Will go back

I wanted to try African food and this restaurant had great reviews. I especially wanted to try fufu. I was happy this place had that on the menu and had two different kinds (yam and plantation). I got the plantation with okra soup and oxtail stew. The fufu and oxtail was good. The oxtail was tender and flavorful. The stew came with either rice or fufu. The okra soup was a little different for me but I was happy to have the experience. The cashier was really nice and helpful.

Really good food and friendly service. Portions are a good size. We ordered the Flauta for appetizer, Yassa Djeun for our meal and Thiakri for dessert. You can choose between Red Snapper or Tilapia for the meal.

My food was thrown on my porch and upside down!! Never even knocked on my door!!! My food is in shambles and cold from sitting outside in the snow and ice!!!! Also the fountain pop that is being charged $2 is being sold in a can.

Ordered through Grub Hub, and food was piping hot . First time trying African/Jamaican cuisine and it was EVERYTHING. Very flavorful; the meats were juicy and tender. The jerk chicken had a slow heat. Didn't seem spicy on the first bite, but it started to bite back after awhile lol. First time trying goat; very similar to lamb but lean/much less fat. Very delicious. My choice of side was the plantain fufu [for fufu, there was a choice between yam and plantain]. Didn't each much of the fufu and would order the curry goat again with plain rice; it comes with lots of "gravy". The Fatayas [beef patties] were SO GOOD. Overall, very good. Would definitely order again.

Look. I don't have any pictures because I murdered it okay ?! THIS PLACE IS PHENOMENAL! I had to call the manager myself and tell them. I had the oxtail sauce with vermicelli, fish fataya, lamb dibi with rice and peas and plantains. I ordered on DoorDash the food took about 30 mins and it was STILL PIPPING HOT when I got it. I mean the flavors of every single meal! The brown onion sauce is something crazy. They also have this red pepper sauce that they give on the side and and baby!.. Just go order from them. I'll upload some pictures when I order again. Which I will be.

What a gem to experience authentic Senegal dishes in Metro-Detroit! We ordered takeout through GrubHub. The yassa poultry was exquisite. The chicken so tender and the sauce with the caramelized onions was amazing, definitely order again. The thiebu djeun with fresh tomato fried rice served was so delicious, can see why this is a beloved national dish. We also most enjoyed a side of amazing jollof rice and fufu. Everything was SO delicious. Would definitely go back again and try more dishes.

I come from a family of Lebanese West Africans. We grew up in Sierra Leone for a good chunk of my life, and my mother still makes us the food that reminds us of our old home. I've been to a handful of restaurants in the metro Detroit area that serve dishes from that region, but I haven't quite been able to find that perfect restaurant to satisfy my cravings in between special occasions. When my mother decides to make our beloved pamay or granat soup, it's always a cause for celebration. Today I decided to give KG's a try, and I truly believe I found my go to spot. The owners are Senegalese, so the cuisine isn't too far off from what I'm used to. I ordered their fish soup, which they served with a copious amount of rice and drenched in palm oil (as it should). It tasted almost exactly like what my mom makes at home, and the spice is just right. It's also worth noting that they serve Caribbean food as well as American food for those who aren't as adventurous. Even though this is my first time here, I will be returning to try other menu items and I am confident they will be delicious. It really brought me to a happy place and I wish the family who owns the establishment continued success.

Lord! It's not fair! This is just not fair Sir! That was my response to the owner when he asked me how my food was. It's not fair that this djollof rice is this good, that the yams are soaked through with the djollof juices, that the red snapper is cooked to perfection, not a minute too long. It's not fair that I've been craving a spicy ginger drink in months and this is the closest I've gotten to my family's back home. It's just not fair! Beyond how delicious the food is, the place was clean clean clean & the service was spectacular. My only regret is not coming here sooner. I'll be making it my business to return.

What an experience!! As we entered the establishment after driving over an hour just to get there we were warmly greeted by one of the owners.We had already been studying the menu so 5 out of the 6 of us knew what we wanted. We did however learn of the exotic juices, the Hibiscus a red beverage and (guessing at the spelling) Baoba juice ( more of a milky consistency) slightly sweet. I had the yapp lamb which came with more rice than I could eat. Nice portions for all of our entrees. My lamb was tasty I just wished there was a lil gravy on it. The jerk chicken was my 2nd favorite really good n tender nicely seasoned (2 thighs 2 legs) and the djollof rice was good and spicy. The dibi was one of my favorites of all of the entrees with a tangy garlic sauce, so good. The thiou with fufu was good n had a nice flavor to it. My daughter loved it n felt hers was the best out of 6 dishes. My daughters which had the fish entree was tasty with a kick of spice but felt like she would've enjoyed it more with some type of gravy. All in all everyone was very satisfied with their selected entrees and enjoyed the family experience. We will be returning.

Absolutely Amazing and Delicious Food! I drive 3 hours just to eat here! The staff is friendly and helpful if you don't know what to get. Quick service and beautiful decor and ambiance. This will remain my "go-to" spot when I'm in Michigan.

One day i was searching for african food and found this place. Funny that i drive past it often and never knew it was even there. Ive only had one dish here so take this review with a grain of salt. I tried the maffeh based on the other reviews, and was not disappointed. I think i was expecting a sweeter taste because it was being referred to as a peanut butter stew, but i honestly didn't taste peanuts at all, it tasted almost like a lamb vindaloo with a thick tomato sauce. Very good, good portions, prices are pretty reasonable. Wasnt all that spicy, they do have a hot oil they can give you with your food but that wasn't all that spicy either, but no biggie. The service was great, the two women that were there were very nice and courteous. The decor inside is also a lot nicer than what you'd expect from the outside, but i always say don't judge a restaurant by the look anyway, that's where most people go wrong and miss out on the best food. You're there to eat, not sightsee! Place is clean and well kept. Definitely looking forward to coming back when I'm in the area again, the fried fish looks awesome and im excited to try the buffet on sunday. Also very glad to have an african place around Detroit, unfortunately there are way too few African and Caribbean restaurants around.

First of all the aromas of the spices from the kitchen was in indication that this was gonna be a good meal from the get go. I ordered the Yassa Red Snapper because I was craving seafood and it really hit the spot. It was a whole red snapper that was fried topped with Senegalese spices and their mustard onion sauce and it was incredible! Also don't miss out on their flavored juices, the hibiscus one was very delicious and not too sweet. The ambiance is nice and the owner is very welcoming. Can't wait to come back and try more from this place

The food is always delicious. I've had the curry chicken, goat curry and believe it or not their NY style burger is sooo good.

I have been craving Jollof Rice and Plantains and I found KG's! Both were yummy and I just picked up my second order this week.

This place is everything. Everything was delicious and cooked to ordered. Being that this was my 2nd time eating African food. This took it over the top for me. When I say everything was flavorful and hot and good I definitely meant it. The service was top chef and the food was affordable. I tried the jerk chicken meal, red snapper meal, a side of veggies, and the lamb chop meal. The veggies were crunchy and seasoned. The best meal had to be the red snapper even though the jerk chicken was a close 2nd. I'm not into spicy but the snapper was spicy enough and just so damn good. I definitely enjoyed myself and over ate too. I will most definitely be back it no place like it.

Greeted with huge smiles and enthusiastic hellos from the cooks and our waitress. The food was ssssssooooooo good and fresh and hot. Our waitress was soooooo kind. The servings were so big for a reasonable price. I will be back very soon.
