Badmaash to Open Indian Chinese Restaurant Hakka Hakka Next - Eater LA

"The Badmaash boys are hosting a series of pop-ups called Hakka Hakka serving an Indian Chinese menu. These pop-ups will recommence in January 2024 on Monday evenings. Chef Pawan Mahendro and his sons, Arjun and Nakul, are behind this venture and eventually plan to open a restaurant specializing in Indian Chinese cuisine in Los Angeles." - Matthew Kang

Didn’t have the best expectations given what the store looked like, but I’m so glad I came here! The food is made to order so it tastes super fresh when they bring it to you. It’s very hot and steamy when you first get it and I love eating fresh food like that! The food is also bursting with flavor, which I really appreciate since sometimes “spicy” isn’t actually spicy, but you can trust their spice guides here! I got the chilli chicken lunch deal with fried rice, the fried rice could be a little better since there wasn’t much to it, but the chilli chicken was very flavourful and had so much garlic, which I love but also it was a little too much. The portion size is very big for only $12 as a lunch special!! You can’t find prices like that at restaurants nowadays. Honestly I really recommend this place if you just want a cheap simple lunch.

Tried the Paneer Manchurian + Fried Rice combo at Khao Hakka, and I have to say—absolutely impressed! The taste was spot on—flavorful, well-balanced, and had just the right kick you’d expect from good Indo-Chinese. The paneer was soft and perfectly coated, and the fried rice was not oily or bland like many places—just delicious. Service was quick and polite, and the staff seemed genuinely attentive. Also, great quantity for the price—definitely felt like good value. Would definitely go back and try more from the menu!

The value is outstanding. I am always made to feel welcome and given food that is beyond my expectations. The food is made to order and always fresh. Prices are super affordable, especially their lunch deals, and the flavours are beyond words. 10/10 recommendation

I used to like this place since 3 yrs ago and ordered frequently from here but hadn't ordered in a long time. Ordered today and was extremely disappointed immediately after receiving the order. I had heard from another person that their quality went down but I decided to give it another shot. I ordered the Chilly Chicken and egg fried rice combo worth $29!! Sure enough the egg fried rice is a joke. It came with 3 pieces of eggs, white rice, some carrots and onions. What a daylight robbery!! $14.50 for plain white rice? No garnish, no spring onions, no EGGS. Such a turn off that I haven't even opened the chilly chicken yet. Acts like these make the restaurants go extinct. Guaranteed I will not be ordering from here ever again unless the quality changes for better. Edit: The owner has responded to my review and instead of taking ownership for their own low quality, robbing methods; complained about other restaurants charging way more than $14.50 for food that the restaurants buy pre-made. I know taking a real review and not such a positive review can be hard but hey you know you are trying to sell low quality with higher prices. Peak sarcasm and another way to say we are sorry you were not impressed by our low quality high prices but it is what it is and that's what the market is offering. Thank you, owner, you just made my point clear that the egg fried rice was low quality and did not justify the price at all by explaining and comparing to other low quality restaurants. Thanks, barred this restaurant off the list. Albeit, a very happy new year to you. Wasn't hoping to start off with a tiff.

First time coming here and have low expectations since almost all the best Hakka places are in Scarborough. After trying the food here, all I can say is that I was really impressed with how good the food is and the fact that they don't skimp on ingredients/sauces unlike other places. They have lunch specials with a choice of pop or bottled water and we tried both of them. First thing we tried is their Chicken Hakka Noodles. I love this noodles - flavourful and juicy chicken, crunchy vegetables, just the right spiciness and umami sauce drench noodles, what's not to love about this dish? The second lunch special is the Chef's Special Fried Rice with a choice of either Sweet & Sour Chicken or Chilli Chicken. Opted for the latter and it tasted like your favourite Chinese fried rice but more spicier and savoury. Combined with the soft and succulent pieces of the Chilli Chicken, this dish is so good, full of flavours and deliciousness! The food are made to order so it's always fresh and you have to wait longer. But the result is worth waiting for. Adding this place on my rotation of best cheap places to eat in Toronto.

It's ok if you manage your expectations. The food could be better but acceptable for the price. Noodle dishes are not bad, I suggest you skip the fried rice though. The dining room is very basic so the take out is your best bet.

Ordered take out for a staff meeting dinner. The delivery gentleman Rishi was extremely sweet and helpful. Prior to my food being delivered I called last minute to add another protein and without hesitation they added it (despise the 24 hour time limit). The food was also delicious! Enjoyed by all.

Yelp
Delicious Indo-Chinese wok noodle and fried rice lunch specials with lots of lengthy complementary menu. Tofu and Paneer options for vegetarians. Open kitchen. Limited seating and beverage options. Friendly service. Just a 6-7 min walk from the St Lawrence Market. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Khao Hakka serves the normal favorites expected of a Hakka (Chinese-Indian fusion cuisine), with some variations not normally found. An example would include the burnt garlic fried rice. A simple, yet potent addition of charred garlic if you're into the flavor, with the choice of protein, just to take fried rice game up by a notch. I didn't care too much for the vegetarian version of their Manchurian starter as I felt it was a bit dense and not bursting with flavor as expected. The chili chicken though was tender, spicy and a great accompiment to fried rice.

Yelp
No need to go to Scarbs to have the best Hakka Chili Chicken any more. Nothing special about egg fried rice but it was still a good base for killer gravy. Spicy level was just right ( even tho I could go a bit more spicy ) Highly recommend this place and gravy is THE MUST!!! Dined in. You order from the counter and pay, they bring the food to the table. Plates & cutleries are all plastic/disposable. Meal for two people was actually for three people. Leftover is always delightful!

Yelp
Food: 3.5 Stars Service: 4 Stars Ambience: 3.5 Stars Fill Factor: Filling I came here for lunch and ordered the chilli chicken lunch special. The staff member was courteous and the food did not take very long to be ready. The food was solid and I especially liked the fried rice that accompanied the chilli chicken. I really enjoyed the fact that they used Basmati rice which for some reason I found really tasty. The chicken was juicy and was slightly saltier than I prefer but was not enough for me to not order it again in the future. Is it the most amazing food you will ever have? Probably not but if you are in the area looking for a quick bite Khao Hakka Refresh is a solid choice and provides good value for what you get.

Yelp
Really mediocre Hakka. We didn't expect to be blown away but we weren't expecting such mediocre food either. The chilli chicken was ok. The vegetarian rice that you order with it was really bad. We ordered on skip the dishes and it added extra $3 for really bad veg fried rice. You have almost raw diced onion and raw carrots in basmati rice with no flavor. I hope they improve and make it better.

Yelp
Service is friendly. Food is hit and miss. Schezuan sauce and preparation is great. Manchurian tastes sour. Burnt garlic rice is great. Hakka noodles tasted like they were cooked in a dirty pan.

Yelp
incredibly overpriced for the portion sizes, slow and made me sick to my stomach all night. Do not recommend at all

Yelp
Hakka Khao was newly opened. The exterior boasts a modern design which will sure to draw in customers. The menu was very basic, choose a protein, and a sauce. No customization for the type of ingredients that goes into the dish. They offer 3 primary types of dishes, stir fry, fried rice, or fried noodles. We got the stir fry with the hot garlic. The dish itself was lacklustre, offering a few pieces of protein with even less pieces of vegetables. The sauce was actually quite good, but there was just too much of it. We felt like it was more like a rice with soup rather than a stir fry. Also beware, the spice level is no joke here. However, I think the worse offender was the mushy steamed rice that we got with our dish, it could've been a bad batch, but it should be something that is perfect each time. Service was friendly, but they did not offer cup of water when we asked. I think this restaurant have potential. We'll be back to try the other dishes and hopefully they'll delight us more!

Yelp
This place isn't bad. I actually enjoy their food and have gotten plenty of take out. For example the vegetarian fried rice, vegetable dumplings, chili paneer, vegetables in schezwan and the vegetarian noodles. I like how they can customize the food for you and you can choose the type of sauce you want. I will definitely be coming back for more take out. The place seems clean and the customer service is friendly.

Yelp
Cheap, cheerful, and delicious. Really great as a basic Hakka spot. Lots of options for simple Hakka dishes, for example, many different styles of noodles, like Hakka, Delhi, Singapore, etc. Be warned though, even their base level of spice is SPICY. Definitely communicate your intentions on how much spice you can handle.

Yelp
This place is pretty awful. Ingredients are not fresh and portions are not big enough (way too much noodle/rice ratio to actual meat or veggies). Pay the same and get much more from a place like thai express. The flavour doesn't even taste Hakka

Yelp
Always order take out, but I am obsessed with their manchurian veggie balls, machurian chicken and prawn fried rice. It has become a weekly ritual, as well as my go-to when I want to indulge myself. It is the best Hakka place I have found downtown!

Yelp
Came in on a Friday evening few weeks ago with wife to try and support the neighbourhood food scene however..... Ordered - "chilli chicken" on rice + hakka fried noodles w/ beef The noodles were quite bland and tasteless, the rice had only a few pieces of chicken in it and overall tasted like watered down instant flavouring bot from TNT paid overall $27 + $1 tip because we ate in, considering the small portions and quality, would have been better off with food court chinese 2 item combos

Yelp
I don't know what Hakka is but thought I'd try the place on my way back. I ordered shrimp noddle Hakka and just like the other reviewer the noodle is bland so all you taste is an oily mush. It says not spicy but it's actually a bit spicy. Sadly I'm not coming back.

Yelp
They had a great Cyber Monday deal on a food delivery app, so I gave it a go despite the negative reviews, and my partner and I were both pleasantly surprised. Good food, delivered hot, clearly labelled for my vegan GF - I will order from them again.

Yelp
Tried it once. In short I would describe it as average food court food. On the plus side the staff was friendly.

Jamie C.

Yelp
Likeky the worst food I have ever had. No taste to this precooked mashup with nothing but mouth burning chilly. Terrible

Ruhul H.

Yelp
One of the worst hakka place i have been to.. the vegetables were literally raw... need to improve their menu and cooking as they have a good location and should make use of that...

Ray S.

Yelp
I work in the area and go here often for lunch. I always get the Manchurian style lunch special noodles, lots of chicken and big portion with a drink included. The other flavours are good too, just a bit more spicy but delicious. If you want great value, this is the place to go for lunch.

Yelp
This place is a hidden jem! I first discovered this place through Ritual and I've been coming here often for lunch during my work hours. The owner and staffs are very kind and personable! The food is really yummy as well. I highly recommend their fried rice!

Yelp
My wife and I visited with no idea what Hakka is. She ordered a chicken Hakka noodle dish and I (vegetarian) had a tofu one. Since we were there late for lunch but early for dinner, there was no wait at all. Staff were friendly and patient as we puzzled over the options. The dishes were very tasty. The Hakka sauce had a nice vinegar/ginger/soy balance. There were other sauce options, all of which are vegetarian, so there are good options for vegetarians as well as people who don't like the vinegar/ginger bite of Hakka sauce. I loved it, so I would get that again for sure.
