Khatan Sushi - Review - Downtown Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Khatan Sushi in Downtown Oakland is a casual Japanese place serving maki, nigiri, donburi, and pan-fried Mongolian meat dumplings. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Was just okay, ordered the veggie tempura and the chicken teriyaki. The veggie tempura tastes not fresh and oil tasted burnt. The chicken teriyaki was nothing special. The dinners do not come with miso soup or salad. Not a lot of options for non seafood/fish eaters. The service was nice and the place was clean. Definitely not a traditional Japanese restaurant. I won’t be back.

Heard of this spot via word of mouth. Me a good friend went there and the food was amazing! A personal nitpick was it was too dim, but that’s just a personal preference. The food was fantastic, service was excellent as well, I forgot to ask the server’s name, but she went out of her way to fix our table that was wobbly. I remember she had a nose septum ring. Overall, fantastic sushi restaurant, highly recommend the Macha Tres Leche cake if you have room left!

From the moment we entered and sat down, it was clear in every detail on the table that this place knows what they’re doing. Thankfully we were in a group of 5 so we could try lots of things from the menu and each one was superb. Each roll is creative and perfectly executed. I was particularly impressed with the First Fridays: a caprese sneaking into a sushi roll, and it made total sense. Great service, fun music, elegant tableware. We were also surprised by the great value. Can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

Google
This place deserves to get more traffic honestly. Have visited twice and had very positive experiences. The omakase is not only delicious but also very affordable and comes beautifully presented on a beautiful platter with flowers. It’s a feast for the eyes! The Mongolian dumplings are another highlight dish for me, so juicy and flavorful. Highly recommend this spot!

Google
This is the most underrated restaurant in Oakland (prob because it’s new). Very high quality fish and great portion sizes. I go once a week and had the Japanese ribeye special last night. 🔥🔥🔥

Google
New favorite sushi spot in Oakland! The interior is super cute and food is excellent. We had the tempura, edamame and three rolls, the bacon of the sea, lake Merritt and seared bliss. The playlist was also excellent. Oakland should show this place some love!

Google
Very good, reasonably priced food. Great quality. Cute date spot, too.

Google
Sushi was surprisingly really good! Huge portion for hamachi Kama and hefty slices of sashimi. It’s also not too loud in there, which was great for conversation.

Yelp
Oh my goodness!! Some of the best sushi I've had in a LONG time!! Not to mention, the service was impeccable. It's a small family business with such a homey, comfortable ambience and the freshest fish! I started off with the 10 piece Nigiri omakase (chefs choice). Delicious!!! I then ordered the 'Bacon of the Sea' roll that has crispy salmon skin on top and it is to die for!! I was in such awe with everything that I had to order some more to go!! I went with the Oaktown and Samurai Rolls, chicken karaage, and of course had to try their house-made Mongolian dumplings. When I ate the to go at home I just wanted to drive right back and get some more!! Choose Khatan for your next birthday, dinner date, or even a night out on your own for the best bites!!

Yelp
Turns out there are now two great sushi spots downtown. Ordered the nigiri omakase with the added toro, had a spot of green tea on an exceptionally windy and wet day, and watched the people go by as I enjoyed my assortment of sushi. Rice was good, not dry, and the fish was fresh, flavorful, and appropriately tender. Service was nice, my server told me what everything on the platter was, some of which I retained! Presentation was lovely. Inside was nice, playlist was the usual "hip hop jams to study to" that seems to be pervasive everywhere. I'd come back and try some particularly enticing sounding rolls (bacon of the sea featuring salmon skin, cue Homer drool noise).

Yelp
I went to Khatan on a Sunday night on the strength of good reviews, and wow did it not live up to them. The restaurant itself is perfectly okay, and service was fairly quick and fine. We ordered the chicken karaage and Brussels sprouts to start, and this was okay. The karaage had too much batter, but no biggie. But the sushi was simply terrible, for sure the worst I've had in a long, long time. The rice was stale to the point of being worse than the sushi you grab from the refrigerator at the supermarket. The grains were dry, sharp, and tough, instead of plump and tender. Even worse was the fish, every single piece of which had started to go off. I'm guessing it was fresh on like Thursday, and here we were eating it on Sunday, by which time it had definitely acquired that distinctively bad fishy smell. I got a few standard nigiri and they were all off in thjs way. I also ordered the Alameda roll, which was atrocious: drowned in vinegar to the point of almost inedible bitterness, then showered in shitty Sysco crispy onion bits. While the puddles of vinegar almost made the roll fall apart, they weren't enough to hide the bad fish smell, unfortunately. The sushi here was simply a disgrace.

Yelp
Stahhhhp...omakase for under $50 and delectable rolls with fresh sushi atop rolls in bite sized perfection. Loved everything from the time we parked our car -- plenty of parking in the neighborhood, and we walked over and entered and the sweet melody of Jhene Aiko was coming through the speakers. I knew it was going to be a good night. The server did a great job of letting us know of tonight's specials. We opted for the omakase, rainbow roll, and Godzilla roll. I loved each morsel and was only disappointed in myself for not being able to fit anymore food in my stomach after a starter of sunomono salad and yakitori and the two rolls. My husband enjoyed the diversity of flavors. Arigato gozaimasu to the chef -- will tell our friends and family to come check yall out for sure!

Yelp
Khatan Sushi recently opened so we came to check it out on a Friday evening. There was no one else eating in, so the servers were very attentive. As for the food, I enjoyed their nigiris the most, they were very fresh. I wish we would have tried the omakase set. We ordered the Lake Merritt roll which was solid but not outstanding and then asked for a tuna maki which ended up being a regular roll. The Mongolian dumplings were not the most flavorful and a bit of an odd addition to the mostly Japanese menu. Lastly, they had decent sake offerings which were a good pairing to our meal.

Yelp
New sushi spot that replaced Elephant Sushi on the corner of 14th and Webster! I came in with my partner on a Monday night and was immediately sat. The interior was dimly lit and pretty intimate which made it an ideal weekday date night spot. Service was okay - had to ask for our waters to be refilled despite being the only ones dining later in the evening. We ordered the Khatan Roll, Lake Merritt Roll, and Omakase to share. I preferred the Khatan roll over the Lake Merritt roll - it was a light balance of sweet and umami with the mango and unagi sauce. The Lake Merritt roll was just a bit too sour for me. Omakase was a decent size with 10 pieces. Nothing stand out, but sushi was fresh. Heads up - they do charge a ~5% "convenience fee" applied to the subtotal before tax is applied.

Yelp
This place doesn't look like much. It is. Got the omakase and was surprised by the quality of the fish across the board. Usually you get 70% good maybe 30% whatever for an omakase. Every piece was quality. Salmon belly melted like butter. Toppings for the nigiri complemented the fish very well. On top of all of this wasn't even that expensive. I would drive to visit this place. Luckily it just opened in my neighborhood.

Yelp
Happy that there's a sushi restaurant that serves affordable omakase walking distance from me in downtown Oakland. I ordered the 10pc omakase which was only $49, and came with some premium bites like hotate scallop and toro. The most unique bite for me was the beet cured salmon, vibrant color but you can actually taste the beet flavor as well. Highly recommend if you want to scratch that itch for some premium sushi on this side of the bay.

Yelp
While we were sad that elephant sushi had closed we were very pleased with this new sushi spot. We had miso soup, a few rolls, the salmon skin with ponzu was the best one. The omakase was the highlight. Each piece seemed thoughtfully prepared. We look forward to going back!

Yelp
So far... amazing! Everyone was so kind. Would be such a cute date spot. We had the spicy miso cucumber and the karage with Brussels sprouts! Delicious. Highly recommend supporting this newer business

Yelp
First time trying raw sushi and it was great and as usual the cooked sushi was good. Dumplings were amazing but be careful they are HOT. Service and Ambiance was 10/10

Yelp
Great service, great food!! Portions were also pleasing everything was made with love including the chocolate at the end!!! Will be back

Yelp
The food was amazing especially the Matcha Tres Leches and Atlas Roll. Definitely recommend the Lion King roll for your final roll as it is the most rich in flavor! The handmade Mongolian Dumplings are a must try for an appetizer!!

Jenn K.

Yelp
Khatan Sushi is a gem in Downtown Oakland! The fish was fresh while offering up some of the most unique and creative rolls playing off their Japanese & Italian cultures! A must try for a most enjoyable night out!

Yelp
Very delicious karage appetizer! Sushi was really good. Appreciate the real crab instead of imitation. I don't know any other sushi places that do that. Did not like that the roll came with soy sauce on it already. Make sure to ask for that to not happen if you like to add your own.

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! Staff was so nice and every roll I had was so yummy. This place is super cute make sure you check it out if you get the chance!

Yelp
We ordered a mix of nigiri, sashimi, and some rolls and everything we had was SO delicious. I couldn't even get pictures of the food because of how excited I was. Every bite of sushi we took was such an incredible experience. The unagi and walu sashimi instantly melted in my mouth. The flavors in the hotate took me on a journey of various flavors. And to top it off, the staff was so kind and attentive! It was honestly such an amazing experience and I highly recommend this place. It's a gem!

Yelp
A warm and welcoming place. I was sad to see Elephant Sushi was gone when I stopped by but decided to try Khatan anyways and glad I did! Delicious food ( had sushi, nigiri, and dumplings) and good vibes. Always appreciate supporting small businesses in Oakland and this one deserves it. Highly reccomend!

Yelp
had a great dining experience at Khatan Sushi! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was also so good, nothing stayed on the plate for more than like 3 minutes, fish was really fresh. Definitely recommend trying it out if you haven't yet, will be coming back soon :) We also had the dumplings which were soo good, devoured before we got to take a picture tho

Anika G.

Yelp
Amazing service and amazing sushi. Absolutely loved coming here. The Mongolian dumplings are so yummy and a cool edition to the menu besides just sushi. Overall I would give this place a 10/10 in all aspects! I hope to come back soon

Yelp
Great quality, service and ambiance. A perfect place for date night and intimate dinners. Sushi was fresh, delicious, and top quality! And the deserts are a must!

Yelp
I was excited to learn about this new sushi restaurant right down town. The owner, Gabriele and his team are a top-notch, class act using super high quality ingredients, ie: no artificial crab, etc. Gabriele was totally willing to work with us to create a last minute b-day lunch, coming to check on us and serving delicious green tea ice cream to top it off. The tempura was a step above, light, crispy, not too doughy with fresh veggies and shrimp. The avocado rolls (my kid's favorite) were fresh. My family really enjoyed the Lake Merrit and Dragon rolls. We are going to be using them for a big family event this weekend. It always feel good to support Oakland's local restaurants and nurture culture, cuisine, and community.
