I Went on a Safari in Botswana With a Female Guide — Here’s Why It Made All the Difference

"Khwai Lediba is one of 17 camps from African Bush Camps (ABC), a safari company founded by Beks Ndlovu. The camp is part of ABC's efforts to empower women in the safari guide industry through their Female Guide Program. The program aims to graduate 25 female guides by 2025 and offers practical and theoretical training. The camp provides a unique and enriching safari experience, led by skilled guides like Sharon Mohlambi, who are breaking barriers and redefining the industry." - Sandra MacGregor

This is an amazing camp -- you are welcomed to the camp with a song sang by the staff and the hospitality continues throughout your stay. The staff will strive to meet all you needs. The tents are large with lots of storage space and nice bathrooms. A cold front came through while we were there so the mornings and evenings were cold but they provided many warm blankets and hot water bottles that keep you toasty during the night. The food was excellent and varied. And the guides were fantastic -- Our guide Phefo and trainee Jessica were the highlight of our trip. They found all the animals we wanted to see and then some! We saw leopards, cheetahs, lions and lion cubs, giraffes, elephants, zebra's etc. Highly recommend!

What a beautiful place! The rooms were luxurious, food was fantastic and the views and hippos were amazing. Our guide - Gordon was great about trying to find animals we hadn't seen on other safaris -- so we were lucky and saw the wild dogs and a couple of male lions. Of course we saw all the other beautiful animals - zebras, giraffes, hippos.... too. Had a wonderful time!

From the singing welcome when we arrived from the heliport, this camp was an incredible experience! The facilities are absolutely top-notch, but beyond that the staff is simply amazing. These are Botswanans who are happy to welcome each of us to their country and strive to provide the absolute best experience. The wonder of the bush is only surpassed by the genuineness and joy that each of them showed us. Spike our guide was an incredible resource—he was simply the best! Dictionary-like knowledge of birds, animals and the land, with a passion for the history of Botswana. Come visit this place! You will create more than memories—your experience will be forever imprinted into your soul.

Fantastic, Aubrey was a brilliant guide. The best guide we had over 4 different camps on our Safari. The area is obviously busier than private concessions but we had the best sightings by far on our trip. Our last day saw many lions, several leopards, wild dogs, hyena, elephant everywhere and a pels fishing owl. The staff were also the most friendly and genuine that we met, not over the top. Perfect.

From the moment you step in the lodge, you feel welcome. The staff is unbelievably friendly, yet professional. They are genuinely nice, we cannot thank them enough. It is not only the experience of the game drive, we enjoyed the experience of being with them, talking to them and laughing with them. |The room was clean, welcoming, well prepared and the bed so comfy. Be prepared for 5am wake up calls but at least you’ll wake up well rested. |Breakfast is served before the game drive, by the fire. The rest of the meals were absolutely delicious and even though I had particular food requirements, they were flexible and happy to cook special dishes. Incredible chefs !! |Thank you very much !

Stayed here for 4 nights after a 7 night stay in Zimbabwe. The tent is comfortable, staff are friendly and always eager to help (Eg. arranging our private dinners), food is extremely delicious (thanks to the 2 talented chef who can cook a wide variety of international dishes). We especially like is the beef fillet and the stir fried noodles at the end of our stay! :)). What didn’t work for us is the guiding experience/ game drives. It was as good as a “drive-through” the park, the guide didn’t seem to want to talk or engage with the group, no conversation on what we’re looking to experience for the drives , didn’t carry essential tools like binoculars, no shining of torch light or laser to point out animals - many times the animals were spotted by people in our vehicle), we had to ask to stop for photos (we’re reasonable and not asking to take photo of every bird) , we had only 2 sundowns on a 4 night stay, no bush walk/ night safari/ last drive in the morning, no tracking - as a group we relied on calls from other vehicles otherwise we won’t see lions or wild dogs (we were very lucky). We did have QnA and the answers were fine but nothing more than that. It was a disappointment as we didn’t feel like we gain much from the game drives and wanted to cut our stay short to 3 nights. We totally understand that we have to be at the right place and right time to view the animals and wilderness is unpredictable, but we believe our experience fell short due to lack of effort and sub-par credibility. We asked to visit the gift shop but our guide drove away at the time of our appointment without letting us know (waited for an hour and was cancelled). There was also an issue with our pick up to the airstrip - change of drivers last minute and it was a race to catch our flight. There seem to be miscommunication/ time mismanagement. Also note the tent can be very warm (direct west facing) during the day and very cold at night/ early morning. You can’t stay in the rooms during the day as it is oven baking warm. Wifi is only available at the lounge which is another challenging part of the stay - obviously you can’t walk around at night so you’ve to check your messages before heading back to tent or go early before the drives to access the wifi. Hence, despite the hospitable general staff and amazing food, this is 3 star at its best.

A mixed experience. Very welcoming and accommodating service. It's very hot in the rooms, with a fan that is effective only at night. There is no internet access in the rooms. The rooms are medium-sized. There is no shade on the patio, so the hammock is in full sun. The food is inexpertly prepared, though the menus are nicely designed and even creative at times. The safari guide was exceptional!

Cool place, nice well designed tents with beautiful bathrooms, outdoor showers, private deck and spectacular view of the marsh / river. Animal viewing right outside your door. ||Good was really great, and especially enjoyed the Boma dinner night. The lodge team entertained everyone with beautiful singing and dancing. ||The open feel of the common area was just like the pictures, very cool, well appointed and magical. ||Best part by far however was the entire staff. Genuinely made you feel welcome and part of their family. Especially a huge shout out to our Guide Gilbert and Selly the host. They made our vacation very, very special!
