The Best Restaurants and Bars in Hood River, Oregon | Eater Portland

"With its breezy, dog-friendly outdoor patio complete with a fire pit, Kickstand is a popular stop to come post-hike, bike ride, or other outdoor adventure. Owners Nick and Kim Hardin’s global travels as professional mountain bikers inspired the locally sourced menu, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options like honey fried chicken and waffles, street tacos filled with banh mi fixings, and shareable mole fries. Morning lattes and homemade donuts transition to draft beer and cocktails in the afternoon and evening to complement the all-day menu. The space hosts frequent live music shows and mountain-biking meet-ups." - Molly Allen

This is a versatile and fun place to enjoy a meal. The fried chicken is excellent whether it is served by itself or as a sandwich. The sauce and pickles and bun and greens are all spot on. Highly recommend. The "smash" burger I do have to take issue with. It does not seem to be a smash burger at all. In fact it seems like a prefab patty. If they had just not called it a smash burger I would give it a solid 4/5. All of the toppings were good, it was cooked perfectly, I love Cali gold style bbq sauce so it's a winner there, the bun is soft and delicious, greens are delicate and fresh, the bacon is thick and of great quality. It checks all of the boxes for a nice pub style burger but please don't feel the need to call it a smash burger because that, it most definitely is not. The fries here are also unique and good. Their shape makes me want to call them chips like in the British sense not Lays. They also gave us a house made bacon maple doughnut which I thought was cute. I've only been here a couple times but I am looking forward to trying the coffee and cocktails. I'm still giving 5 stars because I have so much respect for this establishment, but the nomenclature of the hamburger rubs me the wrong way.

Outstanding!! I've been looking for a truly excellent burger in Portland for some time. Tried so many places, lots of good burgers, but extraordinary until today. The BBQ smash burger just blew me away. So much flavor. Perfectly cooked. Great bun. It hit all the marks. And these French fry petal things? Never seems these before and loved them. Also, the Elote guacamole was excellent too. House-made chips, great avocados, chipotle sauce. So good. I can't wait to go back.

Great experience. The Ricky Bobby is the play. Bloody Mary, yess. A little more salt in the food but you can just add it. Drip coffee is legit. Dog friendly is solid. And we don’t even have a dog.

Google
Our go to lunch spot in hood river. The pork birria baos and thai salad with lemongrass chicken are my favorite on the menu. You have to get the burnt basque cheesecake!! The cheeseburger was ok. Although I loved the fresh greens on the burger it could’ve used a little bit more salt to balance out the flavors. Love that it’s dog friendly. Great indoor and outdoor seating.

Google
Mole chicken sandwich & fries?! Yes, please. And a delectable strawberry donut. Flavors were outstanding, very filling.

We stopped here for lunch on our way to Mount Hood after exploring the Columbia River Gorge. It was the perfect half way stop and we were blown away by the food. This was the first food we had during our vacation, and it held it's number one spot for us even after we dined our way through Portland. The Mexican Sopes were AMAZING and there were several other vegetarian options. The staff were helpful and the location was great with some outdoor seating. We keep talking about how we need to find a recipe to try to replicate their sopes at home because they were THAT good. The only downside is we wish we hadn't set the food bar so high with our first stop, because we compared everything else during our trip to this experience haha.

We were traveling and need lunch. Sat 11 of us. Food was exceptional, counter ordering with great dinning area.

Google
I got the omelet Mexicana. Wow it was so good. The pork was so good. They really loaded it on. Their sour cream was so good. Normally I just skip sour cream but wow that was good. The toast was great as well. It was garlic sourdough. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Our dear friend Rachel recommended this place and she is always right. Everything from the cocktails, starter, entrees and dessert were delicious. We are only in town for the long weekend and are already planning to come back for breakfast. Such a cool concept and our server Sophia was the best! We ordered: Spicy margarita (husband loved it) A cranberry Tito's cocktail (refreshing) Chicken wings, spicy bbq sauce was awesome Kid's cheeseburger with fun twisty Jo-Jo's Kid's fried chicken with the same fries Pork Sopes - SO good Banh Mi Street Tacos Basque cheesecake

Yelp
I have had Molé all over the map, this place makes some of the absolute best house made Molé ever! It's a brown Molé, smokey, salty, and spicy, I couldn't taste any hints of chocolate. I HIGHLY recommend the Molé fried chicken burger. The chicken is buttermilk fried chicken with fantastic crispiness. Service is excellent, everyone is friendly there. Easy going establishment where you seat yourself and order at the register. Outdoor seating is available too!

Yelp
This cafe had amazing coffee and awesome breakfast! The lattes were super creamy and delicious. My group got breakfast tacos, the Ricky Bobby, eggs Benedict, and avocado toast. All of our group was super satisfied. My breakfast tacos were two stuffed flour tortillas, with super well rendered bacon and the green chili salsa that came with it was flavorful. It was a great little breakfast spot for chill, indoor or outdoor dining. The mini-doughnuts at the front are also worth the stop alone!

Yelp
4 years after my first visit, still as amazing as I remember! Stand out items were the chicken sandwich + fries (holy moly the curly fries!!), the chicken wings (the sweet tangy sauce and tender chicken combo wow), and the fried chicken tacos (super innovative how they added the brussel sprouts in there!). Service is friendly and quick. Parking wasn't bad but we also came at 2pm on a Sunday. Come one, come all this place is super cute and food is delicious :)

Yelp
I've always had a great experience at kickstand. It's by go to when in hidden river. Great good, service, live music if you're lucky. Very nice space as well with open indoor seating and a patio. Good meat options for me and veggie for my wife. Love it.

B B.

Yelp
Nothing special; it's a little out of the way and so not worth it. This place has the audacity to feature $20 burritos with "seeded" avocados. Guess what ? No one leaves the pit in avocados and there are far better reasonably priced burritos in this town.

Yelp
Amazing! I wanted a healthy and filling breakfast after a long walk with the pup and this was the spot. I am gluten free and vegetarian PLUS wanted to eat indoors with my dog, and this place checked all boxes. I got the carmelized onion omelette with a side of gf garlic bread and fruit. Amazing! The sauce, onions, and cheese were fantastic and it was a large portion for the price. They also had a quality fruit bowl with berries and oranges, not all melon! The garlic bread was divine. My dog enjoyed a puppuccino with some little treats in it, so fun. You order at a bar and put your own dishes away, but the servers are still pretty cool. One server chatted with us and told us all the cool spots in the area we should check out. Great sense of community here, I loved how kind everyone was and how much love my dog got. This is a place I would come back to over and over again.

Yelp
The instructions here are grab a menu, grab a seat, but then order at the counter, so if you get up to order, you might lose your table. They offer a small but good variety on their menu. I ordered their breakfast tacos on corn tortillas with guac. It was good, but very messy and a bit on the spicy side. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Not much customer service, you see them when you order and drop off your food. Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Came here based on a local's recommendation during lunch time. When I arrived, I noticed the parking was limited and the coffee kitchen was actually connected to a bike shop. I walked through their open garage door, grabbed a menu, and sat down. Once I was ready to order, I went up to their bar to order all following their instructional sign. I ordered a lavender matcha latte and a banh mi street taco. The lavender matcha was well balanced and not too sweet, the way I like my drinks. The bank mi street tacos (2) was okay. Think they put a bit too much fish sauce on their chicken, and the pickled veggies want enough to balance the flavor. I still thought this was a nice establishment to check out for a quick work lunch or coffee.

Yelp
We loved kickstand! First time in Hood River, and we didn't know where to go to eat! We showed up to live music, and amazing food! Just what we needed

Lauren T.

Yelp
We came here for dinner and it was one of our favorite meals of the trip! Good service and a nice patio to eat outside. We got the Mexican food, and it was VERY good. My husband and I shared, and we still had leftovers to take home. Bonus points for the cool little local guidebooks at the tables. A very personal and interesting touch.
google avatar

Patty W.

Yelp
What a fun restaurant a bit tucked away into a neighborhood on the side of a (really cool) bike store. Good service, nice beer and mimosa, and inventive breakfast. I had the barbacoa Benedict, and my husband had something called Ricky Bobby (would love to know the story behind that name). Both were delicious with completely different flavor profiles from each other. I'd love to come back to try more than the brunch menu.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Stopped at this place on the way home because it looked really tasty. We had the burger and the chicken tacos. The place is super cute with a big bar and a big coffee drink selection and a neat bike shop right next door. The patio is huge and has heating. It was clean and the meals tasted really good; the cook cares about what they're putting in, and how it looks. I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
My husband and I will drive from Central Oregon just for Kickstand. It's that good. We crave it on the reg! Great vibes, service, + killer food options. The owners are always very friendly. I love all of the details they have focused on here. (especially the field guide books; really cool touch you all, well done ) Such a good local spot to come to. Well managed, ran and loved no doubt. Thanks to everyone here for always making it such a great experience when visiting!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
The Ricky Bobby is amazing! The spicy Bloody Mary is amazing too! I've had multiple meals here and ever single one has been fantastic. Highly recommend this hidden gem!

Tiff A.

Yelp
We can only speak to our experience ordering take out! I'm gluten free/vegan and the kickstand burger was AMAZING. They sub for beyond which is great and have gluten free bread. The fries are yummy yummy. I cannot speak to the place itself because we didn't dine in but when we went to pick up the people there were very kind
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I'd like to start with the donut. Yes I had the mole chilaquiles and they were wonderful. Yes he had something else, no I can't remember, yes he did love it. But the special little pre meal treat was that chocolate donut. Most perfect. This is our second time here and always when we are passing through. It won't be our last visit, nor last donut to enjoy.
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Really yummy spot! A little high in pricing but large portions and really good flavor. Outdoor seating is cute, it was a nice sunny day so we took advantage. We came for breakfast but missed out cause it's over at 11am and we got there at 12. All the food looked good looking around at other people's plates. Coffee was also very good!
google avatar

Chanel T.

Yelp
Another neat spot to checkout in Hood River for brunch. Iced coffee was delicious. Service unfortunately was slow but they were packed and it was Father's Day. We didn't mind hanging out and catching up with family. Food was tasty, different and we will be back! No pictures because we ate EVERY LAST BITE!

Yelp
Kickstand came highly recommended to us by several people, so we thought it would be a great place to grab breakfast after our morning hike. The atmosphere is cute and casual, lots of places to sit both indoor and outdoor, and the ordering process was quick and easy. I was excited because breakfast on a Saturday can sometimes be quite hectic. Service was fast, and the people were fine... efficient. Now onto the food -- my husband ordered the Ricky Bobby, and I got the Breakfast Burrito with chorizo. The presentation was promising, but we were astonished that both of our meals had absolutely 0 flavor. The chorizo gravy on his dish didn't even seem to have salt on it, and the fried chicken had absolutely no flavor! It was mind boggling... My breakfast burrito was filled to the brim with flavorless rice, no pico, no beans, no cheese, no potatoes, just some eggs and the smallest amount of the driest, flavorless chorizo... truly astonished! Thank god for the green salsa the burrito came with, but we both didn't even finish half of our meals. For $50 for 2 people to have breakfast and a coffee... we will not be giving it a second chance. And i'm seriously so confused as to why people are obsessed with this place. Maybe we came on an off day? No clue. I would expect so much more for a place that does Mexican breakfast! Where is the flavor! Ah!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
This place is so awesome! We were hoping to catch breakfast because the reviews and photos of the breakfast sandwiches are absolutely out of this world! That's OK we will definitely be back during breakfast hours. The cocktails are awesome! Funny we came for breakfast and ended up getting cocktails and a burger. I absolutely love the way they cut the fries so fun and so thick. The fries are nice and fluffy and for being fried food they feel light which is always really nice. The burger was so flavorful! Definitely recommend getting extra pickles. I do believe they are made in house! Being gluten-free I was a little nervous about the gluten-free bun because this can definitely be a hit or miss. Sometimes it's just better to get the burger wrapped in lettuce. I did not feel that way. The gluten-free bun was actually really good! I love that there are so many gluten-free options at this place , and I cannot wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice, hip coffee and food spot. Very good coffee. Best I have had in the area. You order everything at the counter. Good lunch options but they made a few minor mistakes with our order. The service was very good though they promptly fixed the issue and apologized. Unique flavors, amazing fries. Coming back tomorrow for breakfast!

Grace M.

Yelp
Delicious! The burger was cooked to liking and the flavors went well together, had a little bit of spice. The fries were crispy and soft.

Yelp
Wondering what took us so long to hit up Kickstand... For years we've passed by this amazing place, on our way to and from other spots in HR. Today we finally stopped in for lunch and are so glad we did. The Owner greeted us and was welcoming and we immediately felt at home. The decor and aesthetic is so Hood River and we loved all of the personal touches. Two of us ordered their burger and one of us had an avocado poke. Two of us also had their Bacon Bloody Mary and it was amazing. The burgers were fresh and delicious. Not greasy, at all and super tasty. The tuna avocado poke was also well received. I think the thing that hit home most was the hospitality and we can't wait to come back for breakfast and will visit again when we are in the Hood! Thank you!
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Rrally enjoyed the breakfast sope with beyond sausage patty and the mole Chilaquiles. The mole had a nice smoky and sweet flavor. Bloody Mary was a flavor bomb, a bit intense for me, but I could see others liking it. Stop by and give them a try!

Yelp
After a thoroughly good time shredding the local brown pow, we were hungry for some apres before hitting the road. We found KickStand on Yelp and decided it was the one. We ended up getting take out so that we could do some driving in the remaining daylight. We ordered: Kickstand Cheeseburger - SP Provisions beef, cheddar cheese, housemade pickles, pickled red onion, garlic aioli, mixed greens, poppy seed bun & fries House Garden Salad - organic mixed greens, pickled carrot & daikon, pickled red onion, cucumber, house vinaigrette Kid's Fried Chicken Plate - crispy fried organic chicken & fries I love a good fried chicken, and theirs is tender, juicy and flavorful. My second favorite was the house garden salad. I'm biased towards colorful salads full of crunchy veggies. When in doubt, order the burger! We visited during the pandemic, so important things to mention are: Outdoor seating Take-out bag is stapled shut for food safety/security Clean restrooms Drinking water available while we waited for our food Looking forward to dining in and enjoying some beers next time we're in Hood River!
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Came here after a couple of hours of shopping at the farmers market for breakfast. You order what you want at the counter, food and drinks, then they bring it to your table. It's a cute place with some fun art work. Yummy organic food.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Large outdoor patio with a hard to warm up to fire pit. Tables need a good scrub down & rinse. Pup friendly. Service ~ meh. Almost self-serve everything besides the food brought out to you. All the staff needs to do at this point is welcome guests and a simple smile. Not performed. Interesting menu ~ Indian flair, good solid kick of spice. The value ~ sandwich came with 2 fries, pizza palm sized. A spot or two for parking? Will have to park a block away off the street for most. Neighborhood chill joint, great for a beer after a hike.
google avatar

Jason O.

Yelp
Kickstand Coffee & Kitchen was a hit for me and my friends, we wanted somewhere to eat after hiking and saw they had a cheeseburger with onion bacon jam & goat cheese that we needed to try & it was bomb! The meat was perfect and all the tastes flowed perfectly, the fries were very filling & they had 2 kinds of aioli to dip in and both options were delicious! For appetizer we got the guacamole trio and it came with 3 guac flavors and seasoned tostada shells that were delicious! We were to full for desert but next time I'm out that way I'll definitely give the cheesecake a try.
google avatar

Rick W.

Yelp
We stopped for a quick bite and an and we're super impressed with the speed and quality of the food. What was the best thing? Hard to say between a crispy chicken sandwich, poke, and mole fries that were all delicious. Can talk about their fries? They were the most innovative fries in we've seen, part steak fry and part curly fry. On our list of places to visit next time we pass through.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and drinks are tasty. Table service would take this place to the next level and make it more personable
google avatar

Yelp
We walked to this off the beaten path Hood River gem following a leisurely day of pub crawling through town. We were not disappointed. We sat outside and enjoyed the great ambiance and cool breeze. All of our food was excellent and the selection of beer and wine was wonderful. Our server Sierra was knowledgeable and helpful with dining selections as well as the surrounding area. We will certainly return next time we are in town. Just a few blocks west of the Oak Street Hotel!
google avatar

Harold H.

Yelp
My wife, Daughter, and I were very impressed by this place! The food was absolutely delicious! My daughter and I had the kickstand cheeseburger with bacon and my wife had the buttermilk fried Chicken. All of our plates were properly cooked and well prepared with great presentation! The service is great and friendly. A bit different as you walk in grab a menu sit down to decide what you want. Get up go to the counter order what you want. pretty simple. And then they bring it to you. Plenty of seating indoors or outdoors with a clean environment. Highly recommended after a long hike, bike ride, mountain biking or just a day out with love ones enjoying the afternoon outdoors. This place is great!

Yelp
Overall: This place offers a little bit of everything. Coffee? They've got it! Beer, wine, cocktails, ciders? Got it all. Breakfast menu? Yes! Lunch and dinner? Of course! Burritos? Tostadas? Sandwiches? Burgers? Naan Pizza? Poke? A little bit of an identity crisis? I think so. Ambiance: Indoor and outdoor seating. Connected to Evo repair shop. Kind of cold, but fun decorations and there's nothing like sitting between a cocktail bar and a coffee bar. Food: They have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. When we got there it was their lunch menu. Naughty Naan pizza: Tikka Masala is the theme for this pizza. We got it with chicken and it was pretty good. It was odd biting into a pizza and tasting curry flavors, but it worked. Buttermilk Fried Chicken: Comes with two giant pieces of chicken that are friend and topped with sweet honey. Comes with vinegar pickles and fries. Absolutely loved this dish and would recommend. The chicken was crispy, the pickles were crispy. And it comes with their garlic aioli, which was a banger. Very good. Bacon Jam Burger: The combination of flavors for this burger worked well. The smoked bacon with the onion jam, goat cheese and garlic aioli was added a variety of depth of flavors. They all worked well together. The beef itself was also cooked perfect. Would recommend.

Yelp
Dogs inside barking and jumping which violates Oregon statute OAR 333-150-0000, Chapter 6-501.115. Coffee was marginal, food was fine. As long as you don't mind dining next to large, loud dogs jumping around. Dogs were INSIDE the restaurant longer than it took for us to order & eat our meal. Maybe you'll like it if you like unruly pets (not service animals) and restaurants that violate Oregon code. People working there were nice, service was ok. Overall, a disappointing experience.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
Kickstand has been a great restaurant for years, if you don't like dogs. don't come here and you're from Vancouver stay in your own state. We don't want you here anyway stay out of Hood River.
google avatar

Monalisa H.

Yelp
A wonderful selection of cocktails! Don't miss the chance to try the espresso martini when you visit Hood River.

Cheyanne H.

Yelp
My fiancé and I just ate dinner here and I just had the best meal I've had in a long time followed by an absolutely astonishingly delicious dessert. I'm not a review person but I had to download the yelp app just to leave this one because the food was that good.
google avatar

Bree H.

Yelp
Love this spot! Amazing food and love that it's dog and family friendly! Everyone is always so helpful when we stop by and haven't been disappointed in any of their menu items. Can't wait for next time!

Kyle P.

Yelp
Such good food and drinks! Also plenty of vegan and gluten free options, which are clearly labeled. The drinks were super good and the outdoor patio has a cute vibe! Got the banh mi tacos and Thai salad. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Jenna M.

Yelp
I didn't check the yelp reviews before I got here but I went to "Yelp" about this place and you guys nailed it five stars all the way!! I don't need to type much, but I completely agree with the other yelpers, and I found out when we came here that the owners of this place are very involved with the community which makes this place even more awesome! The menu is very good. We did not have any alcohol. We stopped in for coffee to go and then decided to chow down. Check out my pictures. Jennifer our server was lovely
google avatar

Anneliese D.

Yelp
It was a fabulous place! Loved the food, coffee, staff working were super friendly! Will be coming back.
google avatar

Roberta L.

Yelp
Came here for lunch while on a daytrip. They have a nice outdoor patio and a small lot and overflow parking at the park next door. We got the tuna tostada which had tons of fish and fresh with a nice sauce. I got the fish and chips which was... Unseasoned. I really depended on the sauce that came with it. But it was crunchy and decently sized and the curly fries were fresh too.
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Another great dinner at KickStand! I went for the regular chicken sandwich, and it was delicious! A big, perfectly crispy and juicy fillet on a fluffy poppyseed bun. Love the chipotle aioli on the sandwich. Fries were hot and the right level of crispy! Also enjoyed the elderberry rose kombucha on tap. Happy to have yet another great meal here!
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Good fast food but expensive. The service is good but when you're tipping 15%+ I'd expect a little better attenuation
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Omg ... so good! In Hood River for a special occasion and the 2 places we wanted to eat dinner ahead of Kickstand we're closed on Sunday's. So we settled on Kickstand. And man we were lucky. So good! While the buns and salad were very good, the fried chicken hit the spot for me. So crunchy. And flavorful. And the honey! Oh my. I filled myself while there, but my mouth is watering thinking back to their chicken! It was a hot day but the patio had plenty of space. And our server was super friendly. 10/10 experience! Oh yea ... the drinks hit the spot as well.

Kaveena R.

Yelp
The food was delicious, however the reason for the 3 stars is we were charged way extra. We visited KickStand yesterday and we ordered a classic eggs Benedict, which is $16.95 and a ricky bobby, which is $19.95. The total for this should have come to 36.90, however after we came home, I noticed we were charged $46.68. This is not what we agreed to pay and I did not leave a tip so I am not sure why I was charged an extra $10.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
My three positives and a negative because the world needs more positivity: + I appreciated the unique flavors on the menu. I enjoyed my tikka chicken sandwich. Hubby his quinoa veggie burger. The fries that came with were hot and had a delightful twist shape + hubby gave two enthusiastic thumbs up to the local beer + dogs, dogs, dogs. The place was busy with a small band on the patio. Best of all, everywhere were friendly dogs happy to have a pat - service was just ok. Ordering at the bar was straightforward except I had to get my own utensils and a refill
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Great service and tasty food - stopped in for a quick breakfast and enjoyed a Chai and the outdoor patio/views!
