Kilkea Castle

"This castle is old—so old that an Anglo-Norman lord built it in 1180. And throughout the centuries that followed, many sirs, dukes, wizards, explorers, lords, and ladies passed through before it became a hotel in the early 1960s. Today, the stony estate is home to Kilkea Castle Estate & Golf Club situated in Castledermot on 180 acres of its own land. Overlooking Killeshin Hills, a few minutes from the ancient Mullaghreelan Woods, Kilkea has 140 rooms—and guests can choose to stay in a castle, carriage, or lodge room. The decor is rich with plum, crushed velvet upholstered cushy armchairs, swirling floral wallpaper, and sunny yellow light fixtures. This is more than a gorgeous property, however: It also offers golf, tennis, equestrian activities, falconry, archery, off roading, whiskey and chocolate tasting, and fishing on the premises."

This castle is beautiful. The room was great. The bed was comfortable and we got a good nights sleep. The dinner was good. The grounds are beautiful, especially the gardens. We had drinks in the Rook Bar which was very cozy. The bartenders were very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Excellent wedding venue and stunning setting . A special special place. Beautiful golf course. Ideal for 2 day wedding. All the staff were amazing. Shannon , the wedding planner excellent. Lots of things happening at same time but staff never too busy or overwhelmed. Food and service were excellent . Staff all pleasant and so accommodating.

The most beautiful place I have ever stayed. We stayed in the castle which was magical. The breakfast is excellent. There is so much to do on the grounds. My kids love just playing on the extra large yard games. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and done perfectly. Highly recommend it. I will be coming back!

Was here a few days for a wedding and it was fantastic. We stayed in the carriage rooms that are a little off site from the main castle, but they were modern and provided a nice stay. The castle and the grounds were gorgeous!

We have stayed in quite a few castles in Ireland over the years. This one was the oldest, built in 1180. Our room was very comfortable but not the easiest to get to. They do have help together your luggage there. The part that we stayed in there wasn't an elevator(up and down many stairs. The grounds a vast and fun to explore. Staff was very friendly and efficient. My only complaint was that there was also a wedding going on and they took over the lounge area by the fireplace that guests could use if it wasn't so crowded with wedding guests.

Wonderful staff. Room was comfortable with excellent amenities. A quiet serene setting. Excellent meals. Very glad we choose to stay here. Spa:Excellent massage therapists. The thermal room was beautiful & relaxing way to prepare for the massage. The masseurs listened to our needs and have great massages. Loved the relaxation room. Would highly recommend for a truly revitalizing experience.

It's obvious from the website and the photos posted here by others that the castle is wonderfully charming and it is exactly as beautiful in real life as it appears. However, we stayed in a courtyard room and were quite disappointed with tiny size of it - just big enough for the bed essentially - and, more importantly, the total lack of any outdoor patio or sitting area. There is basically no place to sit outside the room or, indeed, anywhere on the property except for a few tables outside the bar where it's crowded by definition (no where else to go) and impossible to not overhear everyone else's posh conversations about their Lamborghinis. Consequently, the room feels like a prison cell where no one in their right mind would want to spend any time except for sleeping (only one chair wedged in a corner) and, surprisingly, there's hardly any place to go outside unless you want to stand. We did find a secret bench down by the river just outside the perimeter wall that was lovely, but some benches or sitting areas in the garden, just outside the rooms or elsewhere would I think be heartily welcomed by future guests.

Stayed here one night and enjoyed the experience greatly. The staff were super friendly, helpful, and fun. We did the escape room on premises (dungeon) and it was well run. Staying in the keep itself was a neat experience. The Keep bar has a neat patio, but perhaps the nearest section is the sitting area just inside reception. Dinner at the 1408 was amazing, and it was a neat way to wind down a long day of driving. The Keep was a convenient bar with great beer and wine options. Would recommend for a luxurious experience.
