The 16 Best Hotels in Scotland

"The good life never looked better than it does at this impeccably renovated 16th-century farmhouse set on a 4,000-acre Highland estate near Kingussie, south of Inverness. There are four double rooms upstairs in the farmhouse, a hayloft above the steadings, and two self-catering cottages. Only one of the farmhouse rooms has an en suite bathroom, which, if nothing else, increases your sense of being at home rather than in a hotel—but all are decorated with great flair and subtlety. The style is a charming Scandi-Scot hybrid, combining sleek, angular, modern Danish design with a stodgy, four-square, Highland farmhouse vernacular. Hence you’ll find your Bamse chair sprouting a shaggy Shetland sheepskin, pale linen curtains framing your shuttered sash windows, and thickly knotted rugs in elegantly hushed tones to soften and warm the bare wooden floorboards. In short, not a trace of the usual Victorian tartan-and-antlers kitsch. Congratulations for which are due in large measure to Anne Holch Povlsen, the wife of Anders Holch Povlsen, a Danish billionaire and conservationist who, with various Wildland-branded properties (of which Killiehuntly is one), not long ago leapfrogged the Duke of Buccleuch to become the largest private landowner in Scotland." - Steve King

We had an absolutely brilliant stay at Killiehuntly - the Farmhouse was gorgeous and very thoughtfully designed - "quiet" luxe - Lorraine was a super helpful and friendly host, Duncan a brilliant chef. Aperitifs and quiet evenings reading by the fire were wonderful, dinners were brilliant. The estate itself was beautiful - Really enjoyed the walks. Ticked all boxes for a "disconnected" getaway. We look forward to returning.

We knew we were in for treat before we even arrived at this beautiful property - the drive from Edinburgh was superb and the setting is simply breathtaking.|We stayed in the main house - and the night we were there - we were the only guests - but no trouble was spared to make us feel welcome and completely at home.|The staff were charming , the walks magical and the food - simple , of high quality and good potion sizes.|We truly had a beautiful time and wished we could have stayed much longer! it is somewhere to take time, check out for a while and just soak in the natural beauty of a very special place.

It's very hard to fault this beautiful property and it's wonderful staff.||We stayed 3 nights for Hogmanay in this immaculate four bedroomed farmhouse, which is very Scandi in design... I think a nod to it's location in terms of furnishings/artwork should be considered.| |Pete cooked amazing evening meals/breakfasts and catered for all dietary requirements and there were plenty of beverage options. All 8 guests eat together, which was a first for us, their company was delightful.||Activities are mostly outdoors, if all you do is go for a walk then you will not be disappointed, this is a stunning landscape. ||I think what really makes this place special are it's staff - we were brilliantly looked after by Lorraine, Fe, Lesley & Nell - Thank you.

This place was terrific, I'm only sorry that we were there for only one night. Alex, a young Englishman, was a great host....greeted us upon arrival, showed us around the property, them served us tea and cake....the rooms were extremely cozy with understated Scandinavian elegance.....and Pete the chef cooked up a great dinner. ||I think the concept of sharing a house with just a few other travelers is a great one....my mom and I met two couples, one American the other German who were staying there the same time as we were and we had a good conversation over dinner and then breakfast the following day.

This was our second time visiting the farmhouse and it's still as amazing as ever. The staff are exceptional and take such great care of guests, especially our host Fiona! Tom's cooking is absolutely incredible, all of our meals were an absolute treat. We're already looking forward to our next visit!

Can’t fault killiehuntly. What a great team, can only speak of Duncan, Tom, Fi and Fiona all were super friendly and made us feel very welcome. The house is lovely as is the location. We walked, e mountain biked, golfed and enjoyed every minute. The decor is super cool and the food and service excellent. Might not be for your taste if you like a large hotel and a spa, but it’s not supposed to be!

We’d come back for Fiona and Cosmin alone! Killiehuntly is a stunning farmhouse and every room is impeccably decorated and furnished. The surrounding grounds are spectacular, vast and calming. The greenhouse was my favourite spot outside of the house to settle in with a tea and a book. What an absolute gem of a Chef Cosmin is; the food was impeccable and beautifully curated and presented at every meal. I love not having to think about picking from a menu and instead having someone showcase their love for the local ingredients—a joy to watch and to chat through the dishes. Fiona is the type of host that makes you evaluate all others as she raised the bar so high for anyone we’ll meet in the future. She is the perfect balance of knowledgeable, kind, friendly and attentive and she made our afternoons and evenings truly special and extra comfortable. For me personally this place is an experience that you can’t rate on the comfort of a bed or the spaciousness of a room alone as it’s so much more than just that. From the people you encounter and the spaces you settle in to the mouth watering smells from the kitchen and the crackling fire this place is a little nook of all things beautiful for the heart and the soul. A little shout out to Lucy, the most gorgeous and sweetest doggo we got to meet with her trusted companion Grant, the activity manager. And a thanks to Fi for looking after us at breakfast and keeping us caffeinated.

Yelp
A delightful, country/farmhouse bed and breakfast with charm and appeal. The main house and cottages have been wonderfully restored to give the best of old and new. There are four rooms in the mail n house where we stayed. Both dinner and hot breakfast is included, and they send you with a sack lunch to take with you. And of course there's afternoon treats. The staff there are all super helpful and friendly. You have great views from every side and window, including the rolling hills of the Highlands. They have a wood fireplace in a family room/den for to enjoy, along with individual fire places in many rooms. The food and meals are lovely and you will not walk away hungry. They include wine with dinner. And they have beverages available at other times at a nominal fee (beer, wine, sodas, tonics). It's a delightful country place to stay.
