I want to first say that I have never written a bad review in my life, but I had an experience at this location so terrible that I need to report it.
I came into the store on Valentine's day because I wanted to get my partner some sponge candy, and thought Kilwins might have some. I have been to other Kilwins locations, but never this one. No one greeted me when I came in, even though there was a large group of employees near the back just standing around. I found a candy called 'seafoam' that seemed to be what I was looking for, based on the ingredients. I realize there are many regional differences in what candies are called. For instance, my partner calls this same candy 'honeycomb.' I waited at the counter for a moment before a young cashier came running out from the back, and then I asked them if 'seafoam' was the same candy as honeycomb or sponge candy. They said they didn't know, so they called over another, more senior employee from the group of 3 or 4 standing in the back.
The cashier repeated my question to this other employee. Now here is where I am still so confused -- why did this employee pull out her phone and ask CHATGPT to describe seafoam candy??? She took out her phone and held it up to my ear as it read out a robotic response. This was a horrifying customer service experience. I expect an employee at a store like this to have specialized knowledge about a gourmet product--better knowledge about your product than an LLM ever could, which is only parroting other sources on the internet. If I wanted to ask CHATGPT I would have done so myself. And even if an LLM is capable of a nicer sounding answer, what does that say about your training? What happened to human connection? I don't expect perfection from customer service employees at ALL, but that's exactly why I don't need a robot advising me on what kind of chocolate to buy.
I looked up a photo of 'honeycomb' and said "does it look like this?" and got my answer. I work in retail, and I would never treat a customer with this total lack of care and product knowledge.
I am sure the chocolate was delicious, and the cashier who rang me up was a sweetheart. I hate to be this person, but I just left feeling discouraged and disgusted. Please be advised: you may get some AI with your chocolate.
