9 Best Local Eats in Singapore | Condé Nast Traveler

"This two-unit shophouse along the historical Katong stretch is a veritable Peranakan heritage center. Downstairs is a restaurant serving traditional Nonya dishes—and there are better places to sample Nonya food, sweets and pastries (like at Glory Catering a few doors down), but Kim Choo's Nonya kueh zhang (rice dumplings) are the best in town. They're triangular-shaped glutinous rice dumplings tinged a lovely shade of blue with butterfly pea flowers; stuffed with a filling of minced pork, mushrooms, and candied winter melon stewed in dark soy sauce; and wrapped in bamboo leaves that lend the dumplings a distinct fragrance. This is where to go for the best of them." - Annette Tan

This shop is the original one, not sure how the two stores are related now since their plastic bag did list the other store as well… Got some classic kuehs like ondeh ondeh and mixed kueh. All pretty good but not exceptional. Rice dumplings were also average. Not the best nor the worst. Maybe we didn’t pick the right ones to get. The only auntie at the cashier was not friendly. We asked what fillings were inside the dumplings on the counter and she said it so quickly that we couldn’t catch what she said at all.

This is my best favourite Nyonya bak chang ( kueh chang babi). It got solid filling with delicious taste of the chang, i have eaten since as a kid and till today is the best 👍👍👍 😋😀 This is a real original Peranakan chang 😀

Must try for kueh lovers - best variety I encountered in Singapore, everything was fresh and tasty. Aunty very friendly and recommended some sweet options I was after. Will be back on my next visit!

The stall front was pure nostalgia, from the old-school cookies, cakes, and desserts to the friendly counter lady who looked like she had been serving generations of customers. We bought ten mini dumplings, and she kindly let us mix and match between the Nyonya and traditional versions. At home, we reheated them as instructed, and the rice layer was bouncy and firm, infused with a fragrant pandan aroma, especially if you let it rest in its pandan wrapping for a minute after heating. Would love for the meat filling to be a little sweeter and more generous, but overall, a fantastic dumpling worth revisiting.

First time trying and indeed it is one if the nicer Bak Chang (Rice Dumpling) in Singapore!! Yumny and Worth a try! However location isn't convinient to visit and price of food items isn't cheap. Minus Star. Do note at second floor of the store is a small simple peranakan museum, visitors just enter the store and proceed level 2.

I love the Nonya dumplings and Nonya kuehs they offer here. You can get a nice snack here if you are feeling peckish. One advice: you have to eat them the same day. They don’t taste as good the next day.

Best nonya bazhang / bak zhang :) Only this and the outlet on East Coast Rd are the real deal yuh. Oh and I wouldn’t pay for the blue pea one as we got some and it tastes the same but costs a lil more.

Been supporting them for more than 25 years. Monthly will come buy for factory teabreak. One of the oldest and best bakzhang in Singapore. Now 2025 into their 80th year, ran by the 3rd generation. Good and friendly service by the cashier today.

Yelp
First time trying, we ordered 2 mini Nyonya Chang & 2 traditional salty Chang Taste 1/1* Both tasted absolutely amazing!! Definitely one of the best Zhong we've ever had, and we've had lots Value 1/1* $5.50 for a Zhong is definitely on the expensive side, but the taste makes it worth it Service 1/1* Had a little bit of an attitude Presentation 1/1* Presentation on point, always appreciate being able to eat with eyes first, they were easy to open and stayed in shape Overall/Revisit 1/1* Would definitely revisit Above and beyond? 0/+1*

Yelp
Really good and interesting candies. A gift store with beautiful souvenirs. Plus a museum upstairs. This place is a little bit of everything! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This morning 2 June 2019, I bought nonya pork bak chang & 1 mini bak chang, 2pcs of kee chang from Kim Choo's shop at East Coast Road. The 7 pcs of nonya pork bak chang were very good but I was very disappointed with kee chang. Lucky, I bought only 2 pcs to try. When I reached home then I realized one of the kee chang very... light and is out of shape. I even took photo of it so that if have the chance to go back to their shop to show their staff. They should quality check all dumplings before selling to their customers. Especially if it is to tourists, it will leave a very bad impression.

Yelp
Little packages of delicious savory goodness wrapped in fragrant pandan leaves. They are called dumplings here, which can be confusing for non locals. They are steamed sticky rice packages filled with savory, sweet mixture. The nonya small comes with 10 small dumplings in a box. $12. The smaller sized dumplings are great for snacking. You're going to want to pop a few at a time. The larger ones are more meal sized. Not as fun for snacking. Get them in the morning while they are still freshly steams.

Yelp
The five-star ratings must be from family members. I find the dumplings to be too sweet. I had to throw away all the kuehs that I bought because they use artificial sugar to sweeten the kuehs. The fake sugar taste was just horrible. Never come back again, ever.

Yelp
Being a rather small eater, I can never finish 1 Bak Chang by myself as I find it too much to handle with the glutinous rice and filling. So, I love the mini Chang (dumplings) at Kim Choo so that I am not overwhelmed. They do have many different type of changs too but usually the hot favorite is the nonya chang. The nonya chang you find here are fully packed with the sweet meat fillings. The mini changs come in a box of 20s. Good snackable size for the rest of the family. Aside from bak chengs, they also dish out pretty good nonya kuehs and chinese goodies for sale.

Yelp
I have been a regular customer because I particularly like their Ang ku kueh, which, at SGD1.00 a piece is reasonable. However, on my visit to the shop today, the price has increased to SGD1.20 a piece, ie a whopping 20% increase! What is the justification? To me, this is another instance of businesses contributing to Singapore maintaining its most expensive city in the world rating. Needless to say, my patronage of Kim Choo ends today. I'm disgusted at their avarice.

Yelp
I love Kim Choo's Bak Chang rice dumplings but I'm not here to talk about them today. Instead, I want to share with you my favorite item here -- Ang ku kueh! They are small sweet kuehs with a red glutinous outer layer and either bean or peanut fillings inside. It's quite a secret that Kim Choo makes very good Ang ku kuehs -- the best in Singapore IMO! Very thin and soft skin and fillings that are not overly sweet. Remember to come early for some, they make a limited number everyday and sell out quickly.
