"Gretna’s Kim Son Vietnamese restaurant will close after 30 years in business because the lease is up and the longtime chef is seriously ill. The menu at Kim Son predates New Orleans’ love affair with Vietnamese cooking. Since many people in New Orleans weren’t familiar with the cuisine, the owners rounded out the huge menu with more immediately recognizable dishes from the Chinese-American genre of cooking. This mix made it easier for newcomers to sample the cuisine, and many locals can trace their first tastes of Vietnamese cooking to its tables." - Stephanie Carter

Lots of better places for both Vietnamese and Chinese. Just ok in my book.

Great place and great food. Was the first vietnamese restaurant on the West Bank or close to it. 30 year business, same lady and cook for all 30 years. She just alerted people she will be closing for retirement. A loss for all but well wishes to her and their family and staff for years of service.

I'm not sure where to begin. The high ranking this place has is extremely misleading. I should've been scared off from just parking my car. The parking lot is one giant pothole and the outside of the building looked like it should be condemned. The service is poor, there is no ac so you sweat as soon as you enter, the food was disgusting, and the place smelled like piss. We sat for almost ten mins before anyone came over to ask if we'd like something to drink. I ordered manadrin chicken and my husband ordered chicken and broccoli. What were served will forever be a mystery. I was given fried chicken drowning in a greyish gravy. My husband had three prices of chicken some broccoli and it was also drowned in another yellow looking gravy. I took one bite and almost threw up. I can't describe the taste because I have nothing to compare it to. My husband bravely switched plates with me because he can stomach difficult foods better than myself. He made it to two bites before he placed his napkin over the plate. I'm extremely dissatisfied and should have just walked out. NEVER EAT HERE!!!!!!

Been eating there for many, many years, since before Tina's son Andy was born. Food is delicious, and Tina and staff are great. Heartbreaking news that Kim Son will soon be closing.

yum! Always fresh, hot, and delicious! Mandarin chicken is the best. The quality is excellent. Love this place for lunch. The male waiters are excellent. I go for the great food, and quick service!

I usually eat charcoal broiled pork over rice. As for a fit person, I didn't like too much carbs and do like vegetables. My plate came out too much rice with only a little charcoal broiled pork to finish half of the rice. It's serves with a few thin slices of sour carrots and few slices of cucumber. They could add some lettuce and some chilly slice too. I'm a spicy eater, they don't have any spicy spice here. I usually mistaken this place with 9 Rose, 9 Rose has better quality charcoal broiled pork. This time I write a review to leave my mark so next time I don't mistaken going back here. Since I don't eat out too much and when I do I just google up between 9 Rose and Kim Son and didn't remember which place was the worse one. Usually I order with side sunny side up egg and bi but I wasn't sure if this was the place that make your plate the same size when you order extra sides and charge you more but your main plate is the same size. So I pay more but still can't fill my stomach. In example you order a double cheese burger only you'll get a double cheese burger. But if you add fries and onion rings. Basically they down grade your burger to a cheese burger with fries and onion ring so it all fit on their plate. Instead of using a bigger plate and put the double cheese burger there with extra fries and onion ring. This is just ridiculous and cheap!

The exterior and interior look as though they may have been spruced up as recently as 1982. I ordered the lunch special Sweet & Sour Pork, which came with a crunchy egg roll, that rivaled the ones at Fong's in Kenner (which has the best egg rolls in the New Orleans area). The fried rice and pork was piping hot and delicious, and nothing was greasy. I'd like to go back and check out their Vietnamese offerings. RJT

Sorry that Kim Son is closing on June 15th, we've enjoyed every meal there for the past 30 years. Get there while you can for a "last meal".
