Kimchi Pop Rogers Park - Review - Rogers Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"With three and a half Starbucks locations, it’s easy to find mermaid-branded coffee in Rogers Park. Classic Korean dishes, less so. Unless you know about Kimchi Pop, a tiny spot on a quiet strip of Glenwood that’s making delicious stews, bulgogi, and kimchi pancakes. The soondubu is packed with umami, a little spice, and silky tofu—the perfect remedy for a gloomy day (or hangover). We also like their kimchi fried rice with spam, as well as the ddeokbokki. There isn’t a lot of room in their space filled with Thomas Kincade-esque paintings and colorful paper lanterns, so it’s common to get food to go. But a seat comes with unlimited access to their self-serve table with excellent banchan. Food Rundown photo credit: John Ringor Soondubu This tofu soup is one of the best things on the menu. You can get it with beef, pork, chicken, or kimchi, but our favorite is the seafood. The little shrimp and mussels swimming in the bubbling red broth give the whole soup another level of richness. It also comes with a fresh egg to crack into it—you’ll have to wait for it to cook, but hey, good things take time. photo credit: John Ringor Ddeokbokki This is a great starter—chewy rice cakes, strips of tofu skin, onions, and hard-boiled eggs all swimming in an excellent sweet and spicy red sauce. photo credit: John Ringor Scallion Pancake With Kimchi Another good idea for a starter. It’s salty, crispy, and gets a bit of funk from the kimchi. photo credit: John Ringor Kimchi Fried Rice When we’re not in a soup-eating mood (a rarity), we like to get this. The kimchi juices and gochujang ensure that each grain of rice is loaded with flavor, and the little bits of Spam give each bite a salty punch." - John Ringor

Wow! The food was so delicious and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. They don’t use nuts in the kitchen, so it’s safe to eat here if you have a nut allergy! Will definitely come back.

Amazing Korean food! We had kimchi soup, kimchi stew, bulgogi beef soup, and kpop friend chicken! Everything was excellent. The soup was my favorite and was just the right spicy. Definitely recommended and I would come back!

Our first visit to Kimchi Pop was spectacular, and some of the best Korean food I've ever had! Chef Som was incredibly inviting, the menu was just the right size, and the sides were all fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend the No. 2 - it was warm, savory, and sweet. If you get the dumplings, use them to scoop up your extra sauce and veggies! Chef Som and his team were also incredibly accommodating, and walked over to check on us and offer Choco Pies for clean plates! Highly recommend, and we'll be back.

Absolutely delicious Korean comfort food, the guy running the place is so sweet and kind. Must visit if you’re in the neighborhood.

Incredible soondubu jigae and veggie kimbap. Very authentic tasting and filling portions. Friendly service. I’ll definitely be back! Small recommendations: would be nice to have purple rice, metal chopsticks, and hot tea for the full authentic experience. :)

Google
The cutest owner ever. She is so amazing to be running the entire place by herself. Tip her generously! Kimchi fried rice with bulgogi was really delicious. 감사합니다! 맛있었어요.

Google
Small spot for super fresh home-style Korean food. The owner/chef was very nice and welcoming, and the food was delicious! Clearly labeled dietary restriction options for vegetarian/vegan/gluten free, and multiple protein options for different dishes (including veg/tofu). The bibimbap and japchae came piping hot from the pan to our table. Be back soon to try the kimbap and pajeon!

Yelp
Visited Kimchi Pop twice now as I am a RoPa local and loved both visits! Both times my bf and I ordered the musubi and the scallion pancakes and were so good! The musubi was well-balanced and the pancakes had so much flavor, we ordered them w extra gochujang. First time I got a spicy tofu soup and this last time I got the dumpling soup, which had to be my favorite!!! The dumplings were savory and loved the delicate broth. My bf ordered the japchae both times it was just that good!! I'm excited this place is a few blocks away from home, we will be back! I also want to add that the service has been wonderful both times. The restaurant itself is very humble and minimal, and the staff is so hospitable and nice! The owner checked in on us too!

Yelp
Excellent casual setting for really good Korean food. Back in the day there was a restaurant at the same location called Pusan House serving inexpensive Korean food to hungry locals. This is an evolved version with a more expansive menu and higher quality ingredients. The open kitchen works great for a small space, though getting rid of the giant TV menu in front of it would be a huge improvement. Perfectly cooked veggies and egg on the bibimbap, tender bulgogi, spicy teobokki--all stood up compared to the food we find in Korea Town, LA. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Chef Son's third location of Kimchi Pop opened up next door and I'm so excited I finally got to try it. It's a small location but it definitely gives a homey vibe. The decor is modest but chill while they play k-pop and j-pop music. The big visual menu will be helpful for those that need assistance. In terms of food - I got the stone bowl bibimbap. I haven't had a sizzling stone bowl in a while and it was perfect for a 30 degree night. Just the sizzling as Chef Son brought it to my table, it smelled so good! I chose beef for my protein and I chose to add extra spam. I also ordered a side of kimchi and banchan is self serve on the side. Although it is an expensive order for myself, it's definitely worth it but I think my extra orders like kimchi and spam add ons plus Diet Coke made the price go up. I didn't notice the water on the side near the banchan. In general - food, service, and vibes 5/5! Shoutout Chef Son!

Yelp
Great new location for Kimchi Pop (after Soon Hee Lee's retirement ("Susie" of Noon Hour Grill that was at this location.) Small spot but abbreviated menu for now of the other established Kimchi Pop locations. Convenient for staying in the neighborhood. Fast service. Little chilly for the winter near the front - so dress warmly. A focused curated menu with self-serve banchan (four kinds). Hot/cold water dispenser available. Keep an eye out...as far as I can tell, the other locations do have some differences to their menu when I browse their online ordering menu. Same may come to the RP location. Chef Son was there to welcome us at the restaurant.

Yelp
Went for a late dinner with a friend and the food was delicious. Great selection of modern and traditional Korean fare. Great for takeout and solo dining as well, you order at the kiosk. Not the most fashionable restaurant by any stretch, but it's comfortable and homey. If you're in the neighborhood, give it a shot! Goes great with drinks from the nearby Rogers Park Social

Yelp
Just tried for the first time and it was incredible! The vegan ddeobokki was delicious and service was fast and so very friendly :).
