On the Grid : Kimganae

"Who else can make a spicy bowl of ramen and rice cakes with American cheese slices? Kimganae is a no frills restaurant that serves traditional Korean comfort food with a twist. The staff here are the friendliest bunch — attentive and funny. We highly recommend cheese on everything and combing through their wide selection of kimbap and dukbokki. There's typically a wait during lunch and dinner, but they try to fit people in as much as possible, don't mind being elbow to elbow with strangers, it's worth a try." - QNS MADE

This place was recommended by a friend. She claimed that the food here was superb and at a low cost. Needless to say, she was not wrong! The prices were fair, especially given the portion size. I did not expect them to be as big as they were! So, if you plan on coming here, make sure you limit yourself a bit. All their rolls are delicious, but my favorite would be the Beef + Inari Roll. The roll is perfectly balanced, and the inari is a nice change of flavor to the seaweed. A highly recommended dish is the Kimchi Fried Rice! The rice is cooked perfectly, with a sunny side-up egg to give it some extra flavor. There is also a subtle spice from the kimchi mixed with the rice, making each bite as good as the last! Another highly recommended dish was the Cheese Ramyun. I was unable to try it last time, instead, ordered the Sliced Rice Cake Ramyun. The Sliced Rice Cake Ramyun was, of course, delicious, too. The ramyun was not too soft, but not too chewy. Even better, you can actually feel the spice as you eat the ramyun and rice cakes. If you are ever in the neighborhood, definitely come and try this place! Large Korean dishes that are tasty and at a low cost. A change of pace to the million other duplicate all-you-can-eat buffets surrounding the area.

I been coming here since 2017, I have brought my friends here and they love it too. They give you soup and kimchi while you order and are waiting for you food. They’re always so kind and nice. The food is so delicious, that’s why I been coming here for 8 years. Lucas, he was so nice and attentive. This is my fav place to go.

Google
Reminds me of the authentic donkatsu from Seoul Korea, not too spicy DdukBoki, Korean style Udon also very tasty

Google
Great service at this casual dining spot, with free refills of water and barley tea! We ordered the hamburger steak rice set, fish cake noodles, and beef kimbap, all of which were delicious and very filling. I would definitely return for their affordable lunch specials. Highly recommend!

Crabmeat triangle 5 stars, they were delicious, my family LOVED them! Shrimp triangle was good(only got 1 shrimp). Highly recommend triangles, cashier was friendly :) KimGaNae you have a new customer!

We stopped by because we were starving and didn’t want to walk any further in the cold! It turned out that the food was tasty and affordable, we only spent $23 on these meals. Would definitely come back to try another dish!

At the time of this review, this would be my 3rd visit to Kimganae, and each dine in visit has always been a delicious journey! Kimganae is located at the heart of Flushing where some of the best Korean restaurants can be found, and this one is definitely on this list. Every visit, I’m always greeted with the friendly staff and service. Of course the space itself can get fairly packed due to its limited seating, but it’s certainly not a dealbreaker. As for the food and prices, it’s fairly affordable depending on what you order, and the value of its meal and taste is worth the price! I always love their Light Western menu, and this time I decide to order the Kimganae Special which is a combo of their fish cutlet, Japanese pork cutlet, and hamburger steak. If you’re like me who is a big fan of any of those three items, then you’ll definitely love the Kimganae Special! The gravy is thick and rich, and it goes really well with the rice and meats. The fish cutlet is well fried with a zesty tartar sauce on top. Overall, this combo entree is probably the best highlight of their Light Western menu, and I highly recommend it. For the price, it’s a tasty dish that fills you up! My girlfriend orders the recommended Seafood Udon. The soup broth is what you expect with hints of shrimp, clam, and squid. The udon noodle is cooked just right. The seafood is somewhat overcooked especially the shrimp, yet enjoyable. Overall, Kimganae is a very good Korean restaurant that has a great variety of dishes with decent portions, fair prices, and delicious tastes. It’s a restaurant worth coming back to!

Google
First impression lasts! My first impression was that this restaurant is not a very friendly nor welcoming place. Would have gone to a different, more welcoming, Korean restaurant if it wasn’t for the rain. Upon entering this restaurant, the host/waiter is not very friendly nor welcoming and has an attitude. Indecisive about where to seat the customers. Very rude at first sight, and it definitely puts a damper on having or enjoying dinner here. Food is really below average. You can tell by the dishes served that there are NO love or passion put into their cooking. Preparations are rush from the non Korean kitchen staff to the table. It’s a cheap, non memorable Korean diner experience at best. Would not come back. 👎🏽

Yelp
Kimganae is a great place if you're looking for a quick and easy Korean meal. Ambiance: 5/5 The ambiance is good. The bathrooms are clean. The seating is comfortable. I can tell this place is pretty popular because the tables are mostly filled and people are getting takeout. Service: 5/5 The service is quick too. The food comes so fast. Btw---it's 8% off with cash! Food: 4/5 The actual food is pretty good too! I got the sweet potato cutlet. I LOVED the sweet potato mash on top. It was sweet and paired well with the savory cutlet. It's also a great price. I've tried the kimbaps before but I would recommend you get their cutlets instead.

Yelp
Good spot for fast Korean food. My partner and I were born to walk in and be seated quickly in a Saturday night, and the restaurant was pretty full. Everything is priced fairly, with large portion sizes. We ordered the ramyun tteokbokki and the seafood udon soup. It's not the best seafood udon soup that I've had (and definitely not like the spicy a seafood stew that I thought it maybe would be). It was still good, though the soup broth had a smoky taste that I am undecided on. The tteokbokki had a nice texture and was quite flavorful, though it is a bit sweet. Efficient and friendly service here, clean inside.

Yelp
"Fresh delicious honest" and "high quality casual Korean fusion food" are some text you'll find on the walls and boy are they accurate. Never been disappointed by the portions or quality of food and staff are friendly! The prices are incredible even in 2024; $14 or so for a big cutlet dish with rice and cabbage and you get some broth and kimchi radish with your meal. Portions are generous but also balanced, you'll notice my rice portion wasn't too heavy handed so that will be helpful if you're being mindful of carbs (delicious delicious carbs). My fried fish cutlet came out nice and hot and really really crispy Definitely recommend coming to visit if you're interested in something yummy and cheap!

Yelp
This stall is located outside the Hmart registers. There is plenty of seating in the area. The stall just opened when I went up. I must have looked like I was having a hard time reading the menu board. The lady behind the counter kindly handed me a menu. After some deliberation I decided on the bulgogi kimbap. After paying I sat at a table to wait. In less than 10 minutes my number was called. It didn't look very big but it was very filling. There were some preserved vegetables, herbs, egg, mushrooms, and lots of bulgogi. It was very fragrant. I wasn't sure what inside gave it a unique floral flavor. My daughter tried it but didn't like the mushrooms. My problem with it was something in the filling was very coarse and scratched my throat. Overall not bad but it wasn't my favorite

Yelp
Casual Korean restaurant in Flushing. Stopped by for lunch. Decided to go with the spicy seafood ramen and Kimganae special. Food was good and portions were generous. Great service; staff were nice and accommodating. I want to try their kimbaps next time.
google avatar

Fateha A.

Yelp
Got squid roll & spicy tuna roll ($9.50 each). Squid roll is always good, just wish the squid was a bit less rubbery. They don't give danmuji anymore with kimbap. Spicy tuna is good as usual. Hot broth is always appreciated, as well as the Kkaktugi.

Yelp
This is what I ordered. D1- mild ddukbokki (you can tell they just added lots of water because there's 0 flavor and it actually taste super watered down) C1- Kimganae Pork Cutlet (curry was very much watered down. Pork itself tasted more like F grade chicken) K7- Chicken Kimbap (bad. Really bad. "Chicken" actually looks and tastes like canned tuna) This was by far the absolute worst Korean food I've ever had. I mean, this is bad. I don't even know what else to say. I'm actually speechless. I called the restaurant to complain, and this lady answered in Korean and I asked for a manager. She replied, manager not here. On a Saturday at 6:30pm? Please shut down. Can't comment on the space. If it's clean or dirty since I ordered using Fantuan app and got it delivered.

Yelp
Not terrible but not great. Came here on a Wednesday evening with 2 other friends about an hour before closing. There were a couple groups ahead of us when we arrived but we got seated within 20 minutes or so. I ordered the Curry Donkatsu which was just fine. My friends each got the Cheese Donkatsu and the Dumpling Ramyun and they seemed equally whelmed by their meals. We also shared a Dukbokki which was on par with everything else. The one great thing is that the portions were pretty generous, especially for the donkatsu.
google avatar

Elsie W.

Yelp
I love this place. I've only ordered delivery though. Their katsu fish is my fave. Also kimbaps! The hamburger steak is amazinggggg. Love their udon too. Pretty much just get everything here.
google avatar

Yelp
I was surprised by the huge food portion; I took leftovers to go and made a second meal out of it. The Spicy Chicken Over Rice had plenty of vegetables, but I wish there was more chicken. The staff was attentive, and this seemed like a laid back and casual spot to grab food. It was pretty quiet here when we stopped by mid-day on a weekend.
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
I haven't been here I a while so it's a bit weird That OG nostalgic feeling is gone also the food tasted different. However besides that the food was still good and service was really nice and fast. Nice quiet and quick place to eat when ur in for some Korean food.
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
Huge portions! We went on a rainy day on a weekend and it was packed. Since it's a little crowded it was loud but one of those uplifting loud spaces, people laughing, enjoying their food. Food was pretty amazing and very fresh. I thought the jolmyun would come with cucumbers but it was straight noodles and an egg. Good nonetheless. Definitely depends on your preference. We got 3 meals thinking it would be small, so we definitely left with more than full stomachs and leftovers.

Yelp
Our go to spot for quick Korean bites. Portions are big and can even be good for sharing. Price is affordavle for a Korean restaurant. If it's your first time here, the curry pork cutlet is a must try! (I know it's not Korean BUT, trust me, it's a winner.). My kids love the triangle (onigiri) with spam filling. I personally love their seafood soondubu - they dont skimp on the seafood. The place gets packed easily and very popular on peak hours (lunch and dinner). Staff is always courteous and quick to assist/serve. Of the many times I have frequented this place, I have never seen the place in disarray. They keep the place clean. Ambience is casual/laidback, non-pretentious. You go here for the food, dine, and go.
google avatar

Yelp
Still a 10/10 and I will always be coming back for the sweet potato tonkatsu because I don't know any other restaurant that has this on their menu. The hamburger steak however was lacking in meat flavor. Didn't taste the protein and the color was a bit off. Honestly tasted very breaded and more like a meatball than hamburger patty. Their complimentary radish and pepper soup will always be inhaled completely.
google avatar

Sandy D.

Yelp
Nothing beats fresh kimbap! We got the Beef Roll ($9.50) and Chicken Kimbap ($8.50). The Chicken Kimbap was better than the Beef, as it wasn't as dry and had more fitting ingredients. The cozy restaurant was pretty busy when I went. They take card! Kimganae is a neighborhood staple, good for quick Korean comfort meals.
google avatar

Fennie W.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with getting food from Kimganae. For the amount of food you get with the price you pay, amazing. I usually order the kimchi fried rice, a variety of dukbokki, and my fave - spicy tuna roll. So much foooood!! I leave with my belly round and have leftovers too. Gotta say, the dukbokki is spicyyyyy (or I'm just weak sauce heh). Staff is great, they're all so friendly and welcoming! Nothing crazy about the ambiance aka not really fancy, but food is delish and worth it! Have been back multiple times ~
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
Food was quick and service was good however the food wasn't very flavorful. Not the best Korean food option, but a good option for a quick meal.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Most of the food here is just okay - it's on part with cafeteria food imo. There is a LOT of variety which is usually an indicator of no one dish is all that good. Kimbap - these are probably the best to get to go from here. Omurice - they top this with a very salty gravy which pretty much ruins the dish. The egg is cooked well - very thin yet great texture. However the rice underneath is almost all rice with some ketchup and not much else. I'd rather they give me a smaller portion with a better rice to other ingredient ratio. Tteobeokki - overcooked rice cakes. way too sweet. Just rather subpar. Didn't even eat more than a few bites. They do start you off with a nice fish cake soup which I thought was very lovely especially on a cold morning.
google avatar

Kann T.

Yelp
The food is basic, classic Korean food. The creamy spicy rice cake is just okay, I like the sweet potato katsu more. The service is a bit slow, it's hard to get the attention of the worker. The place is clean and basic.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Kimganae. Their menu offers a wide range of options, from ramen and rice dishes to traditional Korean fare. However, they're best known for their gimbap, also known as Korean rolls. Made fresh right in front of you, it's both delicious and filling--and very affordable!
google avatar

Bellody C.

Yelp
This used to be my go to spot for Korean food in flushing. I used to thet the baby octopus over rice which made me scream because of how spicy it was. However, the quality of the food definitely went down. I still have it a 4 because at least the prices aren't as high as other Korean places. You pay for the quality you get. I got the sweet potato cheese pork cutlet which is one of their newer dishes. The flavors didn't mesh well. Maybe if the cheese and sweet potato mixed together and the cheese was more in the melting phase it'd taste better. Then you have the red tomato sauce at the bottom which did not go with the sweet potato no matter how you ate it. It was just a mess of flavors. The complimentary kimchi was good but the soup was filled with very strong MSG- it got really salty after a few spoons. I probably won't be coming here again,
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
Food was alright but the customer service was terrible and ruined it for me. I ordered via DoorDash and noticed mustard was in the riceball so I called them immediately and requested to remove the mustard. The man who answered the call was rude, talked over me and didn't even let me speak. His exact words were "I don't know what you're talking about. It's a triangle." I'm aware it's a triangle and I'm calling to confirm the condiments included in the riceball because this is for a toddler. He finally let me finished and said "only mayo" and then hung up. I don't see myself returning here.

Yelp
I was craving Kimbap after watching K-dramas and discovered this gem. Honestly, I have been here many times but always forgot to leave a review. Tip: pay with cash! Food: 5/5 I have ordered kimbaps and multiple noodle soups which were all amazing. My favorite dishes are the beef kimbap with Inari combo and cold noodles! I spend around $35 for 2 people, which is so hard to come by today! Service: 5/5 This place is very korean so, please do not come here with a western sense of service. They sit you down, you order, then they leave you alone until you are ready to leave. This may come off as strange, but it is quick typical in Asia restaurants. If you need something, just flag someone down. All in all, I love this place. The price, quality of food, and service are top notch. It can get quite packed so, I recommend doing take out if you can.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Food was piping hot and delicious. The waitstaff were ver friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
Whenever we are in Queens, we come here to pick up some kimbap for takeout. Service is polite and efficient. We tend to over order since the portions are a good size, 4 rolls more than enough for two adults plus a toddler. Kid approves the beef kimbap and inhales all the accompanying yellow pickled radish. We also are a fan of the chicken (spicy), the spicy tuna. The pork cutlet is decent too. We had enough leftover (an entire roll) to eat the next day and it still tasted great from the fridge.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
it was pretty busy when we went but we were seated pretty quickly and servers were nice. the cream dukbokki was too watery and sweet, i wasn't a fan. the kimganae pork cutlet and japanese cutlet were both pretty good and nicely crispy. we also had the spicy tuna roll and the inari special, both of which id order again!
google avatar

Mari T.

Yelp
It is still one of my favorite spots in Flushing. They are known for the kimbap rolls. Their restaurant is small and cozy. I have been going to this place since I was in college. I'm so glad they are doing well and upgraded their interior. Their dishes always have a good amount of portions.
google avatar

Dominic E.

Yelp
Service was ok but never came back to refill water. The mu kimchi banchan was delicious. The Kimchi Dumpling Soup was fantastic (despite the dumplings having a mealy texture); the soup broth was rich and had a creamy consistency due to the stirred in egg. The kimchi kimbap was terrible. It contained a Vienna sausage like sausage (if it wasn't just straight up a Vienna sausage) that tasted terribly. The kimchi tasted very, very fermented, and did not see fresh. I would definitely come back for soup. But I would not order any other kimbap from here.
google avatar

Shashi R.

Yelp
Great fish katsu, pork katsu, and burger. You can get all three in the Kimganae Special. The inari special has excellent spicy tuna rolls. I was surprised by how good the kimchi Dumpling Soup is! It doesn't look sexy but it tastes great.
google avatar

Tunaidi A.

Yelp
Kimgane offers up a plethora of Korean staples/street food. The kimbap, tteokbokki, and cutlets seem to be the most popular dishes here. Prices are reasonable, service is quick. Kind of no-frills and when you're craving this type of food, it hits the spot.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Dined here for early dinner. I would say the spicy tuna kimbap and the cheese pork cutlet were delicious. The spicy tofu soup isn't your typical kind. More so watery and spicy like a sweet ramen taste. The seafood udon was decent. Big portions here!

Chancy M.

Yelp
Service was awesome food was made in no time however my seafood was a little tough and got a sandy bite with my clam
google avatar

Ange C.

Yelp
I didn't get pictures of everything because: 1) service was so fast! 2) I was very hungry 3) the place was very busy, so I felt like I shouldn't be putzing around. I got the seafood rice cake and it definitely hit the spot- enough of a spicy kick and slight sweetness. I ordered a spicy salmon roll as well. We were a party of four, in and out in about 45 minutes. Everyone liked what they got, again, totally got in the rush of chowing down on my meal and forgot to take more pics- means I have to go back soon again!
google avatar

Nhi V.

Yelp
quality has gone way down. the flavors are lacking big time and it truly tastes average. same can be said about the service, big downgrade.
google avatar

Yingxin Y.

Yelp
I used to really love this restaurant, the tuna roll is my favorite. And then I brought my friend yesterday . We also multiple roll(Kimbap) but then I realized the rest rolls are so awful, except the tuna roll. My friend ordered an eel roll, because eel is expensive and they don't want the roll become too small, so they added a crab meat inside, which took the flavor of eel, and is no longer taste like a eel roll. And we also order a cheese rice cake, it's not spicy and it's too light, I would expect much stronger than it was. Pork cutlet is also very light. I expected much more than that. I will only come back for the tuna roll.
google avatar

Eunice B.

Yelp
When you want a Korean lunch, you have to come here. They have a variety of dishes you can choose from kimbap to different platters! The menu can be a bit overwhelming if you can't decide what you want. As soon as i sat down, water, soup ( not sure what kind) and radish kimchi appeared on my table. I really want the dukkbokki special but thought that would be waaay too much food for one person. The waiter said it was really good so I said okay. It was a lot of food but I was craving it and must have been super hungry because I pretty much finished the entire bowl. Lol
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
if ur looking for no frills korean food with options this is the place to find it. they dont have anything fancy but the dukbokki, ramyun, fried rice, and kimbap have so many variations that are all definitely solid. portions were filling but i wasnt impressed by the taste. the kimganae roll was suprisingly half egg but i didnt mind.
google avatar

Crystal Q.

Yelp
I was a regular here in 2015-2019 and happy to say that their service and food is still up to par when I came back 5 years later, still offering free radish kimchi sides and soup. The restaurant is rather small but has a warm cozy ambiance. During this visit I ordered the kimganae pork special and ramen dukbokki. The bread coating on the pork had a delicious crunch and pork eas not dry. Corn was buttery and sweet. The rice cakes in the dukbokki was perfectly chewy and delicious.

Yelp
We planned to be in the area for some shopping & wanted to try something different found this place on Yelp & figured why not. We came in early Saturday afternoon & had to wait 15-20 minutes for a table, small location so expect to wait unless it's empty. Once seated got some Water, Drinks Green & Citron Tea both cold not bad. They start u off w Miso soup tasty & very soothing along w kimchi combined both & it was very good. Not much on apps it seems? We had the Fried Pork Dumplings they were very good. On the Food Hamburger steak, didn't like this too much meat tasted like frozen meatballs. The Pork w the whipped sweet potatoes was interesting odd combo but tasted good. Also tried the Omelette rice this was the better of the dishes, tasty rice & sauce along w the cabbage salad & corn, seems like those 2 items come w a lot of the dishes. All sauces look the same but tasted slightly different. Would have been nice if waiter had mentioned the dishes are pretty big, we were starving & sharing our dishes why we got 3 but no need & ended up taking a lot home. This was definitely something different to try, prices were reasonable, service was good.

Yelp
Solid place to grab quickie but well prepared comfort Korean food. Large variety of kimbop, dukbokki, dumpling noodle/soups etc. This place transports me to distant memories of my youth in Korea when I thought a plate of saucy katsu, scoop of macaroni and a scoop of rice was the height of western fine dining - they have that here (with cheese on top!) :-)

Steve K.

Yelp
Popular spot and it's busy. The people there are professionals and focused on processing the customers. Food is good and packaging for take away is great. Great place for bunshik food in DT Flushing
google avatar

Yao Han B.

Yelp
Excellent food at a reasonable price. Best of all you get 8% off when you use cash. All restaurants should do this to prevent a world wide digital cashless system. A global digital cashless system is part of a broader "globalist" agenda aimed at centralizing power and stealing away your freedoms. A digital cashless system could give governments or central authorities too much control over individuals' financial activities. The ability to track and potentially restrict transactions could be seen as a tool for enforcing compliance or suppressing dissent.

Yelp
a typical Korean restaurant servicing kimbap and traditional Korean dishes. good service and the food comes out quick. love all their kimbaps!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Sooo good. I got the spicy rice cake with a side of fried seaweed rolls because I've been craving it!! I've never tried this spot before and it's perfection. I love how they add fish cakes and veggies to the spicy rice cake!! Service was also quick. The girl at the register does so much at once and was still able to greet and give guests food with a smile is amazing lol
google avatar

Lise H.

Yelp
Kimganae is an awesome Korean joint that serves a mix of traditional Korean food (think dubboki, kimbap.. etc). It is less of a family style meal, but one with many tasty options to satisfy your Korean cravings. We came on a Saturday night for dinner - we had to wait a bit for a table. The wait was worth the food. They give complimentary radish kimchi and soup to accompany your meal. My friend got the spicy pork rice which was super flavorful. I myself got the sweet potato pork chop dish which comes with corn, lettuce, and some sweet potato puree on top of my pork chop. The pork chop was a bit hard to cut with my knife, but was quite tasty with the sweet potato. Presentation wise, my dish also looked fantastic! Drop by Kimganae for a large choice of tasty dishes! Note the portion sizes are rather generous, so come with an appetite.
google avatar

Hansen T.

Yelp
the food was really nice here, we got served complementary miso soup and pickled radish. the food came out fast and was hot and yummy. i got beef kimchi fried rice, and 2 rolls of kimbap: beef and squid. the only thing i'd say is they didn't serve as many side dishes as other korean places, only had pickled radish. the restaurant was small but it had a nice and clean vibe to it.
google avatar

Joanne H.

Yelp
it's a great place for a quick bite, everything comes out very fast! the food: donkatsu was my favorite by far!!!! it's hard to find korean style donkatsu and the sauce is a delicious thick gravy. the ddukbokki was ok and the kimbap was good! i would say i wouldn't come back for the other things though, but def the donkatsu!! the space: decent amount of seating inside the service: very quick!
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Tasty and filling. I had the baby octopus, it was a little on the chewier side for me but was still enjoyable. I would come back and try more items on their menu.

Yelp
I came here in my high-school days because it was affordable. Coming back here, nothing really has changed except. Everything is still affordable. A date would pay an average of 20-40$ after tax and tip. Portion size is pretty good. The staffs are attentive. Food is still amazing. Happy new years everyone.
