Kimpton Aluna Resort Tulum (Tulum, Riviera Maya) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"If ever there were a destination that was fated to have a Kimpton hotel, it’s Tulum, where the prevailing style has always been one part boutique style and one part accessible, approachable warmth. Unusually, the Kimpton Aluna Tulum is set not on the beach or downtown but in between, in Aldea Zama; the result is convenient enough to both the town and the coast while offering a welcome measure of seclusion." - Tablet Hotels

The rooms are large and comfortable, and the courtyard is genuinely lovely — there’s a lot of potential here. Unfortunately, the overall experience falls short of what the property could be. Staffing is very limited, and service suffers as a result. The rooftop pool in particular feels like a missed opportunity: it’s virtually impossible to get a drink, and the area itself has clearly seen better days. Breakfast is extremely basic — honestly closer to a Holiday Inn level than what you’d expect from a hotel like this. The free bicycles are, regrettably, among the worst we’ve encountered in Tulum. With a bit more attention, investment, and presence on the service side, this could be a very good hotel. As it stands, it feels neglected, which is a shame given how much it has going for it.

Spent a week with my sister at this location in early December 2025. What an amazing property. From the moment you arrive you are treated to wonderful staff and a beautiful room. As a Diamond Elite member was given an upgraded room on the third floor overlooking the pool. Very comfortable bed and great shower. |The hotel offers evening social hour with complimentary beverage and snacks which was very much enjoyed after a day at the beach (hotel offers bikes you can use to go the National Park beach which was amazing). We signed up for a tortilla making class offered by the hotel and quite enjoyed it. One of the best aspects of the stay was the concierge named Luis. I have stayed at hundreds of properties and have never met a person so committed to making my stay enjoyable. His friendliness was so refreshing. Definitely a hotel I look forward to going back to.

Pros: Service and staff were good. Private parking lot of its own which was a big plus. Clean rooms and good overall attention to cleaning. Pool was OK too. Cons: The hotel room itself has several flaws. First, that awful sewage smell comes and goes. Especially from the shower. And second - the thermostat does not regulate properly. You get good cool air but the temperature adjustment is useless. We got sick because one night I was sick and tired of getting up and turning it on and off myself every 20 minutes and I feel asleep and we both got sick the next day. They should fix that. Huge nuisance. Lastly, if you eat on the property always keep receipts. They stifled me of an extra meal that I paid for with cash but it was added to my tab anyway. Good thing I remembered otherwise for those who just don’t keep track chances are you’ll be stifled with extras too.

I chose Kimpton Alina based on what is advertised on their official website, particularly the promise of a “beach club” and a luxury Kimpton-level experience. Unfortunately, what is marketed does not match reality. First — there is no beach club. This is a major part of the hotel’s positioning online, and it is simply not true. There is no private beach club, no dedicated beach area, and no Kimpton-operated beach service. Guests are led to believe they will have a resort-style beach experience, which does not exist. Second — several amenities promoted on the website were either missing, extremely limited, or not operating. This makes the advertising feel misleading at best, and deceptive at worst. Finally — the overall level of service, facilities, and experience does not correspond to what one expects from the Kimpton brand or a hotel in this price and category. I’ve stayed at multiple Kimpton properties and this one is not aligned with the brand standards in terms of experience, attention to detail, or value. I feel misled by the marketing, and I would not have booked this hotel had the website been accurate. I hope Kimpton reviews how this property is being presented online, because the gap between what is advertised and what is delivered is significant. I would not recommend this hotel to travelers expecting a true Kimpton experience or a beach club stay.

Google
First of all they advertise on webpage being a beach resort. While not being on the beach and they don't really have partnership with any beach club. They will attempt to call around if you ask but you are just paying normal price. So you pay the transport to the beach and normal beach club price. That's fraud and a joke. Property is in decent location and maintenaned okay. Room had awful sewage smell though. Staff is rude and not helpful. Wouldn't recommend

This hotel has nothing to do with the level usually represented by the Kimpton brand. Both the rooms and the overall property deserve no more than a 3-star rating. The rooms smell of damp and mold. The staff tried to blame this on spraying in nearby fields, which is simply not true, as the smell was noticeable only inside the rooms (we checked three different ones). On top of that, the bed linen was poorly washed, with visible stains from killed mosquitoes on the pillows. Jesus offered us a room change to a lower-standard room, with no possibility of returning to the original room category even if it remained available for the entire stay. Calling this solution ridiculous would be an understatement. To be fair, the hotel manager was helpful and offered us a room of a higher standard, which was a kind gesture and appreciated. Unfortunately, the upgraded room also had the same unpleasant smell. Payment for the stay is taken in advance, which is also not a standard practice for 5-star hotels. Breakfast was buffet-style but at a level way below Holiday Inn Express. The staff did not inform guests about the possibility of ordering omelets or eggs prepared in other ways, did not offer drinks, and only appeared when it was time to sign the breakfast receipt. The bicycles available at the hotel are rusty, and riding them feels like a constant fight for survival — again, far below any 5-star standard. It is truly surprising how this hotel passed IHG verification. I do not recommend it and will never return.

Had the best time here with my wedding party. Could not have asked for a better place! Brianda was incredibly kind and helped plan our rehearsal dinner at the hotel on their rooftop which was incredible. Edwardo at check in was the sweetest, and all of the servers and workers at Aluna went above and beyond. The Bellhop especially who always happy to help with the biggest smile! Very grateful to all of them for making our stay so special and memorable.

A fabulous hotel. Great food and lovely friendly staff. Jesus was a super waiter. Bicycles for use day was such a bonus and it meant we could get to beaches and beach zone easily. Happy hour between 5 and 6 was a great to end the day. Staff always good fun and very nice canapés.
