Novi Restaurateur Gets Nine Months Prison in Deaths of Five Immigrants | Eater Detroit

"The owner of a Novi Chinese restaurant was convicted of harboring five undocumented immigrants who were living in the couple’s home's basement and who died in a 2016 basement fire. Federal prosecutors argued the living quarters were dangerous—lacking sufficient smoke detectors and offering only a single stairway to exit—while the judge, noting that the space otherwise would have been “excellent,” imposed a nine-month prison term on the owner (after prosecutors sought seven years) and a year of supervised release for his wife. The five victims—Miguel Nunez Diaz, Leonel Alvarado Rodriguez, Simeon Diaz Nunez, Pablo Alvaro Encino, and Brayan Alexis Medina Contreras—were found to have died from soot and smoke inhalation after failing to escape; examiners linked the blaze to smoking and reported that three of the victims had been heavily drinking. The restaurant closed a year after the incident." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
A little disappointed that I drove 20 minutes to find out they're only open for takeout for lunch. The lady taking ordes and cooking was super friendly. Waited 20 minutes for my food. Pan fried noodles, fried rice, egg foo young and egg rolls were all great. Will be back at for dinner so I can dine in.

Google
undercooked doughy dumplings and Curry was filled more with chunks of raw onions and canned mushrooms rather than tofu and chicken. Taste was equally as appetizing it looked Won’t be coming back.

Google
Yikes, talk about a downgrade. The orange chicken more closely resembled calamari, in look, taste, and texture - totally inedible, wouldn't be surprised to hear they're says old. The egg rolls had a flavor I've never known egg rolls to have. Fortunately the pan friend noodles were OK, so I didn't have to rely solely on the one thing that couldn't be screwed up - the fortune cookie - for calories. The interior had no AC, no open windows, nor any turned on lights, and would otherwise feel abandoned if not for the sole front of house worker. Sorry, Kim.

Google
I grew up loving this place for the past 29 year and now panda express is gourmet compared to the meal I have tonight ragoons smell like stale cigs and over cooked, the beef and broccoli had so many vegetables in it it barely has the 2 ingredients in the name and when you find the beef it's soo dry and stringy and the broccoli was extremely freezer burned and don't get me started on the smell of the restaurant inside

Google
Ordered takeout, got home and our container of sweet and sour chicken was less than half full. And the chicken we did get was cold and soggy. I called and was offered to be refunded for the $3 difference between the small and large size. It was wildly inconvenient for us to not have enough food to feed our family. Would have been nice to get refunded for the amount of the chicken ($13). Not only that, but the lady on the phone was rude. The rest of the food was subpar, definitely not worth the $50 we spent. Would not recommend. Update- like many others have reported, they blocked my number. These people need a lesson on customer service.

Google
Save your money. Ordered the dinner for three and was very disappointed for the price. The entrees were loaded with vegetables and a few pieces of meat. Egg rolls were just cabbage, and the wontons didn't have any filling in them.

Google
VERY sadly disappointing!!! I had two other family members each drive 45 minutes one-way to meet me so we could all try this restaurant for the first time. I was encouraged by the high reviews of past patrons, but I'm not sure what earned the high stars. The service was SO SLOW!!! We were the only customers inside initially, so no reason for the snails pace of both our waitress and cooks for refills of drinks, bringing out food, and checking on customers. They really don't write good descriptions of what's IN their food... if you've eaten elsewhere and expect anything resembling what you are used to, forget it! Out of the four of us, only one of us finished most of their meal- chicken fried rice. One person didn't eat theirs AT ALL-- it was supposed to be General Tsao's Chicken (photo below), but it looked and tasted very strange- the sauce seemed to be made of mostly vinegar with a few hot pepper flakes and had many different vegetables we've never experienced other restaurants ever having served in the dish (usually its just broccoli)- when we told our waitress, she simply said "I'm sorry," and walked off. She didn't offer to take it back to the kitchen, replace it with something else, or even remove it from the table since it literally sat UNEATEN. The other two dishes were the orange chicken and the combo lo mein. The orange chicken was mediocre- not terrible, not great. The lo mein was fair, noodles very oily and with virtually no flavor, and nearly all of that left uneaten, too. The dinners came with eggrolls--- its a good thing none of us were allergic to shellfish, because they all had shrimp (again, unadvertised as an ingredient and appreciated by only two of us.) We had to wait quite a while to get our check, and nothing was removed or discounted from the total after our we told the waitress the food didn't taste very good. We literally had nearly two complete, untouched meals, and one half-eaten meal, sitting on the table and the waitress did not even offer to-go boxes. Needless to say, it was a $60 mistake to eat at this restaurant. Save some money and get a much better meal at Panda Express just up the road.

Google
The older lady taking orders and cooking the food was super nice. The heavy set man was rude because we asked for more sweet and sour sauce for the chicken. Even though we were charged for the large sweet and sour sauce

Yelp
Throughout the years, Kim's garden has always been a go to. However, I would say in the last 5 to 7 years it's changed. We haven't been there in a year. We decided to give it a try yesterday for lunch. My son ordered peppered beef. There was very little beef and it was small tiny pieces and mostly all vegetables. I ordered sweet-and-sour chicken. The ratio was a lot better. However, the green peppers were almost freshly cut up and thrown in the sauce before packaged. They were crunchy and not cooked.

Yelp
I don't want to mislead anyone here so I must tell you all that once again I got the chicken fried rice and it was very dry. Chicken tasted like cleaning solution and very tough. I could see they'd used leftover scraps from making other chicken dishes. I called them and the guy who answered asked for my name and acted irritated with me. He just said, "ok, I'll tell her" and hung up on me. Don't expect refunds for food that's not edible or anything like that. Apparently they don't stand behind their food. I'm going to stick with Golden Gate Chinese restaurant from now on. I've had too many bad dishes from Kim's.

Yelp
This was surprising. I rarely go to Chinese restaurants because 95% seem to use the exact same prepackaged tv-dinner 'recipes'. Im a pretty good polycook and I'm married to a beautiful authentic Hunan farm girl - so no big deal. That said, I've lived China for years and eaten enough 'authentic Chinese' food for a life time as far as I'm considered (two exceptions - I could eat 北京烤鸭Beijing Roast Duck and 兰州拉面Lanzhou Pulled-Noodles & beef bone soup everyday) so I appreciate the concept of Americanized Chinese food in theory. Authentic Chinese food typically requires a certain dedication and ritualistic effort to consume. So if you dont enjoy chinging around bones big and small, chonging through tendons/soft-bones (YUM), gristle, rubbery flesh and pick-pick-picking around various inedible intermixed whole spices, youre gonna have a bad time. Emperors Kitchen in Brookfield has always been my go to for great delicious Chinese-with-American-Characteristics cuisine but I just moved back to Wisconsin and it's not very close. So being too lazy to cook last night I figured I would give one of the nearer by places a try. Golden Gate or Kim's Garden. Kim's was closest but has some awful reviews here on yelp. Not being one to believe everything I read on the internet, I sometimes throw caution to the wind and take a chance - with varying results. The photos of the food though looked promising. The sesame chicken DID NOT resemble the typical TV dinner style chicken nuggets slathered in super sweet sesame flavored syrup with broccoli you can expect from 95% of Chinese restaurants, so I was intrigued. It actually looked, dare I say, similar to Emperors Kitchen sesame chicken which is phenomenal. F-it, I put together an online order for Sesame Chicken, Hoisin Beef, and Singapore Noodles. I almost bailed and went to Golden Gate when I saw that a 15% tip was automatically added to CARRYOUT (stop that guys) but then noticed that I could easily disable it. T - 35 minutes until impending disappointment. Went to pick up. Food was ready right on time. The inside of the restaurant actually had a pretty cool ambiance, though they are not currently open for dine-in for some reason. I tried the Singapore Noodles first, since I figured these the least likely to screw up. They were actually pretty delicious and gave me courage to break into the sesame chicken. Which ....was AMAZING. Really. Very similar to Emperors Kitchen's unique style, but notably less sweet which I don't mind. Missing the smokey hints of bacon grease that are detectable in Emperor's version, which I kind of consider cheating even though lets face it - bacon grease makes everything taste better. The Hoisin beef was also very good and I can't complain. Beef was nice and tender. I am thoroughly puzzled with what is going on here with all the bad reviews. Staff turnover maybe producing inconsistent results? Hostile competing Chinese restaurant seeding negative reviews(many of the one-two star reviews have suspiciously low or zero other activity on yelp)? failure to pay the yelp tax? All I can say is I will be back for sure. Do not change a thing(well a bit more rice wouldve been nice). Keep the current chef happy. I look forward to trying more of the menu! (Now just to find a Thai restaurant nearby that is anything close to the excellence of Singh Ha in Stallis. Yeah right! Not even the restaurants in Thailand I've been to can compete - so I will continue pick up the legendary Singh Ha Cashew Delight when I am in the area and hone my own mediocre copycat recipe when Im not)

Yelp
Just bad. Food all had a burnt oil taste, food very over cooked and greasy flavors bad. Just really nasty. I try to give the benefit of something just going not right but all 8 of our meals were just horrible. I just don't understand how they serve food like this. They have to know it bad. Or they just don't care. Unbelievable

Amanda Z.

Yelp
Called to place a pick up order and the lady on the phone was rude. I'm not sure if she was just trying to be quick on the phone or if she is just naturally rude. The conversation didn't seem rushed so I'm just gonna go ahead and say she was probably just rude. She asked me what I wanted and when I started saying it she cut me off assuming she knew what I wanted. When I hung up the phone I had realized since I wasn't able to completely say the name of the dish without being interrupted, I forgot to modify it and say no mushrooms. I ended up calling back immediately and canceling the order instead of trying to continue to have a conversation with her.

Brionna H.

Yelp
Very disgusting! The food Also gave me food poisoning. Highly disappointed, do not eat here!

Liz T.

Yelp
We were greatly disappointed. The egg foo young was meh The quality has gone away down I Is ordered the dish called mei fun. It is a noodle dish that should have barbecued pork shrimp vegetables in a garlic sauce. It had no sauce thin spaghetti noodles with barely anything that was recognizable tiny tiny shrimp. Maybe 7 from a can and as far as the barbecue park, wasn't there? I had a total of maybe 4 pea pods zero flavor

Andrew G.

Yelp
The only reason I gave 2 stars is because of the customer service. They are nice, their food is the king for food poisoning. Do not eat here, the chicken is raw and not good. The sauce was cold and tasted like trash. I'm sorry but it's terrible.

Yelp
Heard good things about this place. Tried them tonight. Veggie Spring Rolls heavy garlic and frozen in middle. Hong Sue chicken was overcooked and hard. Egg drop soup was excellent. Rice was perfectly cooked.

Wendy K.

Yelp
We've ordered carry out a few times and have never been disappointed. What happened????????????? Our carry out order of 2 chicken fried rice was inedible it was so salty. Our egg rolls also, way too salty, crab Rangoons were hard as a rock except for tiny inner part our grand-daughter loved--2 bites, all she ate. Sweet & sour chicken, OMG, chicken was so dry it was inedible. We ordered extra for leftovers, everything is in the garbage. Sooooo disappointing!!!!

Yelp
Second time ordering from this place and both times were pretty bad. About a year ago I was serve dry inedible chicken and the portions were way too small for the price. I was serve a small portions but charged for large portions. Since that happened it took me a whole year to give them a try again and I came across completely different issues now. I would change my one star review to a five star if they actually tweaked their recipes. Let me start off by saying the rice is authentic, it's not the plastic rubbery rice that most Chinese restaurants serve, it's legit real rice, and it's made the old fashioned way using bean sprout, scallion, and egg. Bravo for that. It was almost perfect! But whatever oil they use to cook that in it's like glue in my food. And when I stir the rice around I see stringy glue-like fibers. The oil is thick and gross they need to find a different oil to use for their fried rice. And that's the only thing stopping the fried rice from being a five-star dish. Now moving on to the sesame chicken. The sesame chicken has the potential of being perfect but they would need to change two things. For starters, the breading on the chicken was completely soggy and falling off! It's very unappetizing. But if they could somehow add a type of flour thats more firm to the recipe, that would make all the difference in quality! Lastly when it came to that chicken the sesame sauce was not thick and coating the chicken, it was liquid at the bottom of the to go container. It was pretty gross and because it wasn't thick and didn't stick to the sesame chicken my sesame chicken didn't taste sweet, didn't taste like anything but plain chicken. That was the worst sesame sauce I've ever had in my life. Maybe if they add some flour to the liquid and thicken it up it would hold good on the chicken. I would have to say overall that sesame chicken meal was ruined and gross, but has the potential of improving if they could tweak their recipe. And the slimy glue-like texture from the oil in the fried rice ruined what could have been the best rice dish ever. Please reformulate your ingredients and cooking methods. There's potential here but as is, the food was really disgusting.

Yelp
Kim's Garden hits my Chinese take out cravings every single time! I've been going for almost 10 years. Here are my recommendations Appetizers: egg rolls, Chinese fried chicken, Dumplings, and crab rangoons Entrees: orange beef, general Tsao's chicken, Lomein, bbq pork pan fried noodles, Cantonese noodles, and shrimp lobster. Pro tip: get the hot sweet and sour sauce for your Chinese fried chicken. I think it's a better combo than the Sweet and Sour Chicken entree.
google avatar

Kari B.

Yelp
And my search for halfway decent Chinese food in Waukesha County continues..... Kim's Garden came highly recommended by a couple of co-workers. After ordering from Kim's, I am making a mental note not to ask them in the future for restaurant recommendations. Our order consisted of Crab Rangoon, Egg Rolls, Chicken with Broccoli, and Beef with Hot Garlic Sauce. The Crab Rangoon tasted stale and old and hardly had any filling in them. Next the egg roll; the outer part was really thick and chewy, not really how I like my egg rolls- the filling was ok. Both the Chicken with Broccoli and Beef with Hot Garlic Sauce were bland! The beef had this weird sour taste to it that no amount of chili garlic sauce could cover up and looked unappetizing. Both dishes left this weird oil slick taste in my mouth. So disappointing.

Yelp
Ordered food online for pickup. Order was 25 minutes late and incorrect. I'll go elsewhere next time.

Yelp
WOW in C19 times and with how many restaurants have closed you would think an empty restaurant would not purposely try to drive away customers. I stopped here for lunch and I took a look at the menu and I thought that a shrimp and pork egg roll with a small beef fried rice would hit the spot. So I order my lunch and the guy tells me that beef has a $1 up charge from the menu prices and asks if that's ok and I tell him no. I explained to him that I'm not having a beef entree and that I'm having beef fried rice which is probably 70% rice so it's mostly a rice dish so why would something with so little beef in it to start with have a beef up charge and he looks at me confused. I tell him no that's ok because I will go next door to the Mexican restaurant instead and have lunch where I had no up charges for all the meat tacos that I had.

Tricia O.

Yelp
I literally just went here and spent like $80. I did not get my orange chicken and drove 25 minutes to get this food. When I called to ask about it, they hung up on me and said they packed everything and there was nothing they could do. So I paid for an entire entree that I didn't even get. I would never recommend this place to ANYONE. How completely RUDE and ignorant. Zero stars, the only reason I put one star is because the app made me. NEVER EVER GO HERE!!!

Yelp
Not sure if same family is still involved from over 22 yrs ago!! We used to live @ 1325 Garfield when Old English Flowers was on Broadway, next to the post office! Yelp
Oh my Gosh, well looking for someplace to eat tonight while we're in Waukesha, Wisconsin, we stumbled upon this restaurant called Kim's Chinese garden. The food took me back very far back to when I was younger, a taste that I've searched for for so long, a familiar taste. The food was excellent and yes, I found what I've been searching for for many years now it was hot. It was good. It was spicy where it needed to be spicy. It was not spicy where it didn't need to be spicy the super hot and flavorful the food was just magnificent and our waiter. His name was TA What's funny is when I walked into the restaurant he told me that it was for takeout orders only because they were understaffed and it was a slow night and him and his other staff are the only ones working. I explain to him that I did not mind waiting if we could just sit down and have our meal, because as being truck drivers, you don't get to do that a whole lot it's usually food on the go he said as long as I understood that he didn't want us to feel as though we were being neglected that he did not mind if we sat to dine in, and that's exactly what we did and let me tell you if you happen to be in Waukesha Wisconsin and want some of the most excellent Chinese food that you could even imagine I suggest you go to Kim's

Jean M.

Yelp
I have been going to Kim's for YEARS, I drive from Milwaukee the food use to be so good. The last two times I drove all the way there to pick up my food it was down right bad, beef and broccoli and sweet and sour chick were dry and tasted like they cooked them the day before. Rice looked thrown together, you could see it was not mixed well at all. There food has always been excellent, I hope whatever the problem is they fix it. :( I have no other Chinese food restaurant to choose from, they were the best. New Cook ? New owner? Whatever it is please do something about it.

Dawn R.

Yelp
Awesome food. Great egg rolls. Never have experience a bad meal here. Keeps me coming back for more.
google avatar

St G.

Yelp
I have searched all over the world to find similar dishes to Kim's Garden's BBQ Pork Pan Fried Noodles or their Spicy Beef entrees but no luck. By far the best Chinese food I have ever eaten and whenever I go back to my hometown I make a point of eating here every time!
google avatar

Nicole V.

Yelp
Amazing food! Quick and friendly service this is definitely my go to Chinese restaurant
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Kim's is delicious. Make it hot and give me extra. My place to go when I crave someone else's cooking. Not a processed food place. Yum!
google avatar

Ed B.

Yelp
I like the food at Kim's garden, just make sure you check your order before you leave with your take out. Every time I go there they forget something. I call and they say they are sorry and offer to give what your supposed to have in the bag, but who wants to drive back for some dumpling sauce or the last time during the super bowl drive back for the plum sauce for the mu shu pork. IF i ever end up there again, you can bet I will make them unpack everything so I can check to see if it is all there. I hope the owner reads this and does something about their quality problem

Kris J.

Yelp
Their Singapore noodles are the best. Place could use an update though - in rough shape.
google avatar

Cyntha H.

Yelp
Great Chinese restaurant. The potstickers were big crispy and chewy. Very good egg rolls. The Crystal Shrimp was fresh and delicious. The Moo Shoo beef was perfect. It's been awhile since I've had Chinese food done the right.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
I have been eating at Kim's Garden for over 10 years. I can tell you truthfully that it has seriously gone down hill. There is no quality control. My percentage of at least one of the items I have ordered to be suspiciously old and dry or the recipe totally off. has continually gone up. I love their BBQ Pork Fried Noodles, and it is the almost always reliable dish to order. One or two times I had some seriously burnt noodles thrown in there. My egg roll tonight was enough to call it quits for going to this establishment. I believe it was super old, once frozen, probably rebreaded, and hard as a rock with burnt parts of knobby roll. It did not look like something I would ever give to a customer.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
They didn't have a few things I wanted when I called which is ok, those items just aren't on the menu like you would be at any other Chinese place... The fried wantons LITERALLY had no filling in them. Not a single one. As for the egg rolls, I've had better from the frozen foods isle CHEAPEST ones in the grocery store. The shrimp in all this still had the poop in it. Not to mention the kid at the desk had absolutely no personality and was miserably bored. Probably because not a soul was there, and now I know why!

Andrea T.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!!!!! My favorite Chinese restaurant closed a few months ago and I have been searching for a new place and I am so happy that I have found it! I tried numerous places and nothing comes close to Kim's Garden! It is authentic Chinese food and not commercialized like most. We had chicken subgum, chicken fried rice, shrimp egg foo young and sesame chicken! They were excellent and I highly recommend them all! The only downfall was it was a little pricey but it is worth every penny!
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Went here when visiting my parents last week. The food is "classic" American Chinese food. If you are used to eating authentic Chinese you will be disappointed here but since this is what I was expecting it was fine. I asked for the highest heat level of my entree but to my taste it was medium at best. Service was good and portions were huge.
google avatar

Erynn S.

Yelp
This is a pretty good place. the quality of the food is consistent - if you like something made here, you'll never be disappointed by it. More than that, the food is prety good. It's american-chinese more than chinese, and that's absolutely fine since that's what my husband, mother-in-law and I were expecting. More meat than vegetables in the servings, something I do not like but many people (including my mother-in-law) prefer. The server was new, and consequently not brilliant, but she was sweet and enthusiastic and got the orders right, so she should work out fine for the place. It was an enjoyable dinner, overall.

Myrt D.

Yelp
Just tried to place a pick up order and talked to a guy that sounded less than happy to be there. Found out they no longer have Steak Kow ( the reason we went there in the first place). What happened to this place used to be fantastic. Try Golden Gate, very friendly phone service and helpful too.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
I used to go here for dinner alot. Lately, I've been going more for the lunch buffet - which isn't the largest in the world, but the food is great. If you get dinner here, try the spicy chicken or the beef with green peppers and tomatoes. The owners are great people and they use nothing but the best ingredients in their food.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The food is not your everyday Chinese cuisine that you find at pretty much every Chinese restaurant in Wisconsin. It is homemade, fresh and delicious. So pleasantly surprised!!!

Nunya B.

Yelp
I love the food here! I only wish I had found it sooner . It's really great and really well priced. Everything I have ever had here was totally delish! The only thing I don't like is the creepy little waiter. He seems to be there every time I go and for some reason he scares me. Like hacking people up and keeping them in his freezer, scares me.

LInda L.

Yelp
There is no place better than Kim's Garden. They are accommodating, pleasant, and excellent cooks. I have had family come up from Florida, they visit many high end restaurants, and they said in no certain terms, "Kim's Garden is the best Chinese that I have ever had." I have been visiting Kim's Garden for over 20 years and I can state that I have never gotten any food that was not as excellent as the previous visit. Kim's Garden is my favorite restaurant and I will never stop eating there! I Love Kim's Garden!! Linda

Lisa G.

Yelp
Don't waste your time or money. The restaurant can't even get the orders right for their awful food. I picked up a carry out (first visit) and the entire order was wrong. I called and they wanted me to drive 18 miles back to get a refund. I have a disability and can't just "drive back". What kind of Chinese restaurant dips their egg rolls in batter to fry them? Not an authentic one.

Anne D.

Yelp
Love this place! Service can be a little off but great food. Love the vegetable subgum and BBQ port pan fried noodles but have never had something that I didn't like from here.

Barbara S.

Yelp
Have gone here for a few years.. Love it! The food is always made to order, hot, and people are so friendly!!!

Gorpin S.

Yelp
Used to go many Monday's with my father for the lunch buffet. Service was always just fine. Would order a special order of General Tso's chicken once and awhile. They always accommodated me. A few weeks ago I was going to place the order I do once and awhile, and I had the worst experience there I've ever had at a restaurant. The little wench on the phone who probably was in high school tried to cut me off as I was placing my order to try and tell me it wasn't possible to change the standard general's chicken. I cut her off as she cut me off telling her that I order it that way all the time. She then tried to tell me that there "might" be an extra charge. I told her I never pay an extra charge to have them take out peppers and put in water chestnut instead....a little pause and she was real snippy and unprofessional saying......."well there might be an extra charge, just saying" angered and frustrated, I hung up. A half hour or so later I wanted to call and talk to the manager to address the issue. I call up and sure enough she answers again. I simply say "Let me talk to your manager or whoever is in charge" I knew it wasn't going to go easy from there. She asked who was calling, and I said that I do not need to give her my name as it is no concern to her and asked her again to talk to the manager. We went back and forth as she was unprofessionally arguing with me. She then finally put the phone down or something....in that time probably making up some sort of story to the manager making her look like an innocent angel. After a minute or two of hearing noise in the background, she gets back on the phone as says "Ya, sorry they're busy" What kind of joke is this???? Not only do I get treated disrespectful by this little high school wench on the phone, but when trying to get to someone who could hopefully resolve any issues also denies to please a customer, that just goes to show they deserve their 3.5 rating here and hopefully it goes down even more. Everyone I know who would eat there once and awhile will no longer go there as well as me after telling them about my horrible customer service experience. I hope this place goes out of business
