Top Chef Houston’s Only Local Contestant Evelyn Garcia Prepares for Season 19 Premier, Plans New Restaurant | Eater Houston

"Started as a Southeast Asian food stall in Rice Village’s Politan Row serving signature dishes while searching for a permanent home, the operation pivoted after the food hall closed in November 2020. The team developed a line of Southeast Asian spices and condiments that sells wholesale and at farmers markets, expanded pop-ups around the city, and uses product sales to sustain and grow the brand. The business also stages lively events—complete with DJs, a mariachi band, interactive attractions, photo opportunities, food and drinks, and local vendors—to engage customers and raise its profile as it pursues a brick‑and‑mortar future." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
Very good sushi’s, Veggie options are pretty good. We tried Garden twist and Bomberman and both of them hit the spot. We even had Pad Thai just to end on a good note. Amazing food, service and ambience!

Crystal O.

Google
chicken teriyaki bowl and Crab rations were very sweet but good. Spicy crab roll tasted better than hot on state roll (fishy). Pork buns were good as well. Thai tea tasted burnt as if it was boiling for too long not the worst but I’ve had better and 80% of cup was ice. Skip Thai tea not enough for price!

Google
It's a rarity for me to love a place and go back in the same week, however this tonkotsu ramen had me back the next night. I'm here for a work trip and if I lived anywhere near here, I'd be a regular. Genuinely the best I've had in awhile, the pork chashu is melt in your mouth! Crab rangoons are delicious as well as the mango smoothie. What a highlight of my trip, thank you!

Brenda N.

Google
We enjoyed the Pad Thai, crab rangoon and cucumber salad but LOVED the Khao Soy! The most flavorful Thai dish I’ve experienced - can’t wait to have it again.

Skyler D.

Google
Exceptional ramen in a truly upscale setting. The broth is rich and deeply flavorful, the noodles perfectly cooked melts in your mouth. Every detail feels intentional, from presentation to service. A must-visit if you love elevated ramen. The only downside is the space can get really packed so it can get a little loud and cramped.

Barry M.

Google
One of our new favorite sushi spots. I love the fact that they also serve Thai food as well as a very wide amount of sushi, maki, sushi rolls and other amazing dishes. We have been here twice now and each time the service & food has been great. The service is always spot on and the food is delivered very fast.

Alvin K.

Google
In my personal opinion probably one of the best sushi in the southern region of Wisconsin... Beautifully displayed, the taste was amazing, ramen broth was incredibly delicious, drinks were perfect especially for how warm the weather was, the staff was attentive and caring. 1-10 experience wise ... I'd rate it 9.5 :) 3 people bill was around 160 ish.

Keith O.

Google
Started with the kalamari and the tempura shrimp appaetizers. Both seem to be pretty standard deep fried foods you coukd buy from the Schwanns man, pretty dissapointing. I had the honey roasted duck entree which was fine. My parents both ordered dry ramen pork, whcih was very good. Sake is very over priced here. Chairs and benches are hard and uncomfortable seating.

Vicky B.

Yelp
This is by far the best sushi in the greater Milwaukee area and better than most in Chicago. From the warm welcome from the host when I entered, to the wait staff detailing weekend and lunch specials and the variety of saki, it was an inviting atmosphere. I am disabled and use a mobility scooter which is not always easy to get around inside restaurants but they moved tables and chairs to make room to store my scooter out of the way and sat me at a table for one. Their menu is diverse, creative and vast. I ordered too much but I had been craving good sushi for awhile. The miso soup was awesome and served so hot as it should be. The salad with ginger dressing was the standard at most sushi restaurants, but double in size. They have these crab/cream cheese " balls" that are delicious. And the maki rolls are so good. My favorite is the classy California Roll with snow crab (and a lot of it) -it's 8 big pieces and the price is $11.50 - anywhere else is at least $17! I also enjoy the vegetarian ACA roll with avocado, asparagus and cucumber - nice and light but a great combo of flavors (for $9). My other fave is the shrimp tempura roll which is another huge 8 piece roll, and includes avocado and asparagus, and is perfectly crunchy, sweet with a tangy sauce. At a very nice price of only $13. Kin has great cocktails, beers and wines/saki as well as many kitchen appetizers, entrees and a nice selection of Japanese desserts and soft drinks. Overall - best sushi with a lively atmosphere, welcoming and helpful staff and great prices. They have a robust takeout business too - so you can order online and enjoy it at home! Arrigato KinSushi, you're doing everything better than most and I am addicted!

Yelp
We visited Kin by Rice n Roll during the last hour of a Thursday night, and the place was still absolutely packed. That might explain some of the slow service--there appeared to be just one server trying to keep up with a full room in a very small space--but the delays still made the experience feel a bit strained. The prices, though, were the biggest surprise. Most of the complex rolls were around $17, while even the simplest ones were about $9, which felt pretty outrageous for what you get. Unfortunately, something in the meal didn't agree with me. I ended up feeling sick afterward and into the next day, which overshadowed much of the visit. My partner, on the other hand, really enjoyed the non-fish options, so from a vegan or vegetarian perspective, this spot seems to deliver well. Overall, despite a few highlights, I don't think I'll be returning--neither my wallet nor my stomach is eager for a repeat visit.

Yelp
The food here was amazing, as always, on a recent visit with family. I finally tried the crab fried rice and it was phenomenal. I'd worried that there wouldn't be enough crab to justify the price and I was dead wrong. it was filled with lumps of delicious crab meat and the sauces served with the rice just intensified the experience. The sushi was on point as well - I always enjoy the Tosa toll and BF enjoyed his soft shell crab roll. My cousin's steak dish was a a delight for her. Her husband thoroughly enjoyed his samplers and his sake flight. This time, however, the service was just off. The restaurant was not terribly crowded and we got that right as it opened on a Sunday, but the timing was dismal. Diners waited forever for food to come out. Even cocktails were slow. Someone's entire order was dropped and all I could think was, "Thank god, it wasn't ours. I'm starving here." Hoping it was just a bad night, because Kin's food is too good to let slow service keep you away.

Yelp
Kin is such a fun spot to check out in Tosa! We went at 5pm on a Friday and were seated right away however it got busy pretty shortly after, just as an fyi. I love the menu versatility offered as I felt there is a little something for everyone. S/o to our waiter who was so kind and attentive all evening which we really appreciated! The thai tea and iced coffee are often our go to drinks; they were so delicious- definitely worth trying if you have a sweet tooth. I tried the Milwaukee Roll, miso soup, and we split garlic fried rice. Overall I really enjoyed everything I had - especially the salmon and shrimp sushi roll- such good flavors! Would definitely recommend giving Kin a try- I plan to go back to try some new things!

Yelp
I went to visit some friends and they took me out to this restaurant. Parking ramp is behind the restaurant and free. Reservations or wait list recommended. My friends were telling me how delicious the food is and it's always busy. We sat outside since there's no wait, however inside looks really pretty and intimate with the lighting. They offered a mixture of sushi, Ramen, and thai. Definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in town.

Yelp
Sister restaurant to rice n roll!! Decent & affordable asian food in mke -- I was disappointed by the sushi roll we got but maybe we just ordered wrong?? Tonkotsu ramen was enough to satisfy my ramen craving and might be one of the better ramen spots around here. Best crab rangoons we've had in a while tho and the mango sticky rice was good too. Appreciate the service and that we didn't feel rushed to finish even a few minutes after they closed. Nice interior inside, along with good music
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
My husband and I love this place. The food is always fresh and flavorful. Usually there is a wait in the evenings but never longer than 20 minutes. One of our top restaurants we like to frequent!
google avatar

Adrienne D.

Yelp
Update: I came to Kin with my family (party of 8). We called the same day and got a 1:15 reservation. Service: Our waiter was Burke. He was great!!! Very funny!! Kept the energy going and didn't miss a beat when it came to our orders. Kin is a staple restaurant in my Milwaukee rotation. Sad to be moving out of the state soon.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Went with friends as we were visiting. The options and selections were great. The curry and sushi are the things to get definitely. Come by if you're in the area!
google avatar

Calvin Y.

Yelp
Ramen is good and the roll is pretty good too. I think i would get a different rolls next time and skip on the ramen though. The ramen isnt over the top unique or anything but it definitely hits the spot if you're craving ramen. Atmosphere is very classy modern date night vibes. Service is decent but we were sitting in the corner of the restaurant so they didnt check in on us as much as the other tables.
google avatar

Dominique J.

Yelp
A few of my friends frequent this place and they invited me to try it and everything was divine. I started off a the kin wings for an appetizer and they were really good. For dinner I had the Tum Yum ramen which was phenomenal. It came with beef, boiled egg two differently types of noodles. The sauce was a mixture of sweet and spicy. It was definitely filling because halfway through the bowl I was full. The service can be a bit of wait if you don't have a reservation. Saturday is a popular night. Once you are seated the waiters are there are fast they gave us a complimentary appetizer because we had to wake a little bit longer than expected. My favorite thing to do last night was the sake bomb. My friend who is from Thailand showed us how to do it, which was fun. The ambiance of the place is very good. It puts you in the mind of a restaurant in Asian culture.
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
Kin is absolutely amazing. The best place in Tosa for a girls night or date night. The ramen is great, the sushi is great, the Thai tea is the best I've had! Really you can't go wrong here. The service is always fantastic and the ambiance is lovely. It's usually pretty busy even on weeknights so doesn't hurt to make a reservation if you want to save yourself the wait!
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
This place has good sushi quickly. If you're a sushi snob this probably isn't the place for you. It's a very casual place to get sushi. The presentation is fun! The only downside to that is that it makes the sushi hard to eat. The menu is also very repetitive. The best way to describe the food and ambiance here would be casual Midwest sushi. The service was quick and friendly.
google avatar

Lily B.

Yelp
We had been there several times, love the food and ambience and always good to try some new food.
google avatar

Sandy N.

Yelp
I love Rice n Roll and am excited to see Kin as a new branch. While there are many familiar items on the menu, Kin's dining experience is a bit more upscale than the East Side location. Tucked in the Tosa Village, give yourself 5-10 extra minutes to find parking. I'm slowing working my way through the menu, but so far, I keep returning to the Khaosoy, Milwaukee roll, and pad Thai. I haven't tried the ramen yet but it's on my list for next time. I've enjoyed most of the sushi rolls but I would pass on the spicy salmon as it was dominated by cucumber. With such a variety of dishes for different tastes, I recommend stopping by if you haven't already!
google avatar

Daniela B.

Yelp
Good atmosphere and great food. The menu has a wide variety of options from Thai to Japanese cuisine, including sushi. They also have specialties of the day. I had ramen with pork and my husband had sushi. It was great! The customer service is excellent. I told them that it was my first time, and they' made me feel welcomed. Cool place in Tosa!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Awesome spot with an extensive menu! Usually I get weary of places with extensive menus because it feels more like a quantity over quality issue, but Kin serves great food through and through! The menu heavily focuses on Thai and Japanese food - it was fun to get dishes in each "world". Everything here is plated beautifully and is equally appealing to the eyes as the stomach. For an appetizer, we got the Milwaukee Roll and the Black Dragon roll. The sushi rolls are nice and big! I personally liked the Milwaukee Roll more based on my preferences, but both were good. I enjoyed my Panang Curry! It's got a solid kick to it, comes with plenty of veggies and chicken, and has good flavor. Service was friendly and interior is super clean! Great place for asian food.
google avatar

Shelby C.

Yelp
I have no stopped thinking about this place since I ate here. I cannot wait to go back. I had been looking for a new sushi place after moving and I found my go to place in Kin! You cannot go wrong with any roll you pick, it was all amazing and their crab rangoons were great too. Service was quick and friendly and the restaurant is a really nice vibe.
google avatar

Nicky W.

Yelp
YUMMM! Hands down the BEST sushi in the Milwaukee area! I have never had a sushi roll or anything on the menu for that matter that I didn't like. The Milwaukee roll is a must. All their ingredients are fresh and the menu items are jam packed with flavor. The restaurant can fill up quickly so we always go around opening. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough!
google avatar

Erika C.

Yelp
There is a huge menu with lots of different options from thai, to ramen, to sushi. The sushi was delicious and there's a wide selection of rolls to choose from. They also come out with special rolls every once in a while. I've been here several times and the quality of their food keeps me coming back. After trying several sushi restaurants in the area I would have to say this is my favorite! Their ramen is also delicious and perfect in the winter time. For apps - definitely try the crab rangoons! Atmosphere is really cool and in a fun location in the Tosa village.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
Stopped here after a work trip because I was craving good sushi. Sadly, the quality seemed to go down. The add on gyoza to my lunch special was still on par and very delicious. But, the sushi tasted too fishy and the rolls were much smaller than what I've come to expect from this location. The service was still great, as always, but it didn't make up for the sub par food. Might have to branch out to a new spot for a good sushi lunch option.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked kin! The sushi was great, a wide variety on the menu, and service was excellent. I will definitely be returning!!
google avatar

Kelsey H.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went on an impromptu Friday night date to Kin. After driving by and noticing how busy it was, we checked their website and were able to get in line. To our surprise, we received a text within 10 minutes that our table was ready! We ordered the Chicken Gyoza, along with some of the dishes featured in the restaurant's photos--and needless to say, we were blown away. The fact that there's no photo of the potstickers says it all... we couldn't wait to devour them! Our server, Rhea, made our experience even more memorable. She wasn't just doing her job--she genuinely cared about making sure we had a fantastic evening. Her kindness and thoughtful questions showed that she truly enjoys what she does. If you haven't been to Kin yet, do yourself a favor and go soon!
google avatar

Joel H.

Yelp
Very good ramen, with not quite as much spice as I was hoping. Love the atmosphere! The plum highball I had was tasty, but very loaded with ice, so it got a bit watered down and kinda lost the flavor. I'll go back, largely because there's so much more to try on the menu.
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Been coming here for 3.5 years and have tried most sushi places in the region. Kin delivers excellent quality sushi consistently and is worth the price which is pretty standard for restaurant quality sushi. Staff are attentive and professional. Takeout is simple and can be done online. Proud to say I order or dine in this restaurant 1-2 times a month and have yet to be disappointed! Not pictured, but the spicy tuna crispy rice starter is a MUST!
google avatar

Tran N.

Yelp
Went with a few friends on the weekend to get some sushi and it was great! It was pretty packed, however, there's a few parking lots close by that you can park at for free. We ordered a few appetizers to share and our own entrees and it was pretty good! Our server was super sweet, patient, and helpful! I ordered a few basic rolls, so I'll definitely have to come back and try their specialty rolls or other items!
google avatar

Kandi H.

Yelp
Food & service were great. tempura shrimp & veggies was mid, and they have canned sodas for some reason, but all the ramen we order were awesome, I got spicy, it was delish. And matcha cheesecake, thanks for b-day slice! Atmosphere was nice, ducked off location. Definitely want to go back and try more dishes
google avatar

Joanna T.

Yelp
Ehhhhh..... We've been coming here pretty regularly and I've been really disappointed on my last 3-4 visits. The service is reliably good, so that's a thumbs up. The food? Whoever develops dishes here really, really loves gloopy, sugary sauces used with a heavy hand. When I'm eating sushi, I do not want my roll to to taste like sweet melted peanut butter, but that's what I got last night. It was absolutely drenched, so scraping it off didn't help much. On past visits I had similar issues - tons of sugary sauce drowning the sushi. I tried the ramen in an effort to find alternates and the broth was not savory ramen broth at all, again it was kind of sweet. Fatty pork and a cold egg meant this was a "no" as well. The mister likes it here so I'll probably be back, but not by choice.
google avatar

Rick R.

Yelp
Excellent Tonkotsu Ramen! The noodles were perfectly cooked and held the flavor of the broth, and the broth had the savory and slightly salty flavor and milky texture. The pork belly had the perfect "fall-apart" tender texture with good flavor, and the egg was also perfectly cooked. Would order again! Uni Q roll was good, but missing the stand out BBQ Unagi flavor I expected. Overall, a solid experience, and I would come back to try more of the menu.
google avatar

Wing Yan K.

Yelp
Whenever when I'm traveling, my first instinct is to search around for food that I love, such as noodles and rice. Of course, I will also up to trying things that are local as well. A family owned restaurant, KIN by Rice n Roll, located around the Wauwatosa, WI. It is about 12 mins away from Milwaukee. We went in one evening and they are super packed. I love the comfy vibe and super friendly staffs. The bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen is exactly what I need and totally my type of comfort food. Their broth is very rich and can't help to keep have a sip after a mouthful of ramen. The sushi is also hitting the spot as well. Had a mix of nigiri and rolls. Not to mention, their plating level is at another level.

Kelby F.

Yelp
Great serving size and delicious food, fire ramen was the perfect spice level,, service was amazing and had a very nice vibe. 5/5
google avatar

Lynette H.

Yelp
Today everything we ordered was amazing. I personally had the Drunken Noodles. I thought it was amazing and a large portion. Definitely will return for that dish. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. It was a beautiful afternoon to enjoy the sunshine and peacefulness of the classy and clean inside.
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
Had a late lunch here. Ordered chicken gyoza pan fried (other choice was veggie). It came out nice and crispy on one side. Tasty - could have had a few more spices added to the meat mixture- but good. The Florida roll was tuna and yellowtail with avocado. I don't know if the roll was to have both fish in each roll piece- some had one type but it seemed that others had the two. Came with some wasabi mayo on the plate that was great to have. The roll was good and I would order again. Next time is like to try one of the thai dishes. Service was good- and a lot of tables were taken on this Friday afternoon at 1.

Clarissa C.

Yelp
Welcoming staff, excellent service, great food!!! Ramon has an acquired taste, curry was the best of the four we tried. Loved the sushi roll, beat past of our meal. Definitely would recommend.
google avatar

Frankie B.

Yelp
I would be as bold as to say the best sushi in Milwaukee and perhaps Wisconsin. Their speciality rolls and quality of seafood is unmatched! I specifically love the black n white roll, my husband really enjoys their masaman curry. The service also has always been excellent, we don't typically order drinks because the drink menu isn't necessarily anything special, but the food makes up for it'

Heidi P.

Yelp
Had the lobster bites then our family ordered two different ramen dishes and 2 different sushi. Farwell was super tasty along with a special presentation with some sauces that were great. Also had the California roll. Super tasty too. Will be back!
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
I've experienced Kin twice: once through a catering order for work and the second for dinner with a friend. Catering: The catering menu has lots of nice options we ended up ordering a sushi tray, salad, rice w/veggies and gyoza. Everyone in the office loved the lunch. Picking up the order was nice and easy and since we had such a large sized order they even helped me carry it out to my car. Restaurant: About a week after trying Kin for the first time with our work lunch I returned for dinner with a friend. Dinner was very good !
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
My new go-to restaurant. Kin impressed me with the quality and presentation of the food. It's so hard to choose between the rolls, appetizers, and the "meals". I had red curry and was amazed by how delicious it was. The crab Rangoons are smaller but are some of the best in Milwaukee. Every roll I've had I have enjoyed. They do to reservations which is nice for bigger groups. This is a an amazing option for lunch or dinner
google avatar

Alison C.

Yelp
Wow! I can see why this place gets such good reviews--I couldn't say a bad thing about it. We stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday, they had plenty of tables available and we got seated right away. They have a few lunch specials, the one I did was $13 for miso soup, red curry (chicken, tofu or veggies--I chose chicken), and added on crab rangoons for $5 to share. We also got the flaming tuna crispy rice as an app. I could live off of both of these. Absolutely delectable. The Rangoons are smaller in structure than how most are, but the shape of them allows more crab and cream cheese inside which we both appreciated, instead of having bites of just wonton, how many Rangoons are. These are the way to go. The tuna crispy rice was also fabulous. They don't even taste like tuna at all. It was creamy on top, but crispy on the lower half, and the combination of the curry Mayo, sweet soy glaze, and spicy Mayo added some spice but not overwhelmingly so. Their miso soup had an abundance of scallions, tofu, and seaweed, more than I've ever seen in miso before. It was good flavor, could have been a little hotter though. The curry was fantastic. You could taste the coconut in it, the rice was cooked to perfection, good amount of veggies and chicken included, and portion size--too big for me!! Maybe it was all the apps we had, but I could only have around 4 bites of it, although I wanted it all. I took the rest to-go and will have a nice meal tomorrow! My date got the chashu pork and the hot on the state roll. He was very happy with both of them, although preferred my curry. He said the best thing about the pork was the sauce, and the sushi roll consisted of fresh ingredients but would choose something more unique next time. Definitely will be coming back!

Yelp
Stopped by with a friend on a Friday night for a girls sushi night out! We arrived around 5:30PM, so there was definitely a wait. Parking was NOT fun, I will say that. Was quoted about an hour wait, but received a call about 15 min later from the host that a table was ready for us! Having been to the East Side Milwaukee Rice N Roll location, I had high hopes for Kin, and they certainly delivered! We ordered the appetizer sampler, which was really fun for two people to share! We got edamame with the 'spicy' upgrade, crab rangoons and steamed pot stickers. Everything was prepared and served perfectly, and the edamame was craveable! We each got our own two sushi rolls, and the presentation was beautiful. My go-to is always the Clumsy Bueno, SO tasty, but also, massive! I typically pair it with a smaller roll, and the salmon avocado really hit the spot. Very much enjoyed the evening, and was happy with the speed and friendliness of the service. I saw a lot of take out orders, but would highly recommend dining in when you can, it was a great evening.
google avatar

Joan H.

Yelp
Good place for sushi in a very nice area. Service was good and fast. Nice environment. There is a covered parking lot at walking distance. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Allison H.

Yelp
Right when I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile :) I came by with some friends for dinner on a Saturday night. It was busy, but we were seated quickly considering we didn't have a reservation. The space inside is cozy and modern. We started off by sharing a bottle of Tozai Living Jewel sake (go with the chilled option), which was light, dry, and faintly sweet. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appetizer, which tasted great. We also ordered the teriyaki chicken with miso soup, pad see ew with chicken, and pad thai with chicken. All of our dishes were prepared well and tasted delicious. The kitchen was kind and accommodating of our nut allergy. Overall, the atmosphere was relaxing, and our server Tina was very friendly and polite. I look forward to the next time we dine here!
google avatar

Sandy A.

Yelp
Always good. Always busy. Great service. Tosa gem for sure. Definitely get in for the lunch specials.
google avatar

Isabelle E.

Yelp
One of me and my boyfriend's favorite date night locations, food is always amazing and the restaurant is nearly always full which I totally understand, they're wonderful!
google avatar

Erica W.

Yelp
Everyone I went with enjoyed their dinner. They have all their gluten-friendly options listed directly on the menu which is so nice. Their gluten-free teriyaki chicken was so delicious. It was incredibly busy when we went, but our waitress was so kind and friendly.
google avatar

Marilyn P.

Yelp
Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice- I've said it all, it's delicious and probably my favorite thing to order. They have amazing rolls but I always come back for this appetizer. Waiters are amazing and always attentive. Restaurant is cozy and welcoming.

Brian C.

Yelp
What a gem. In Wauwatosa for the bike race and stopped in Kin for dinner. My wife and I shared three rolls and by far the star of the show was the farwell. That's not to say that the Mke dangerous and the crunchy shrimp weren't fantastic too, but we have a soft spot for deep fried sushi. We were a little far from home so we didn't indulge in any drinks but I bet they are as fantastic as the sushi. If you're lucky enough to have Rhea wait on your table, your experience will be exponentially better. She was so nice, so attentive, and an absolute pleasure. Go here if you're in the area and want really good food.
google avatar

Nathan P.

Yelp
Came for dinner at 5 on a Saturday and were seated right away but it filled up fast. Had the mantou, a clumsy bueno and pad Thai chicken with Thai iced coffee to wash it down. Excellent meal all around, service was great, will be back!!

Yelp
LOVE ordering takeout from kin! Huge pad Thai fan and the pad Thai here is my favorite in the area. The sushi is incredibly fresh and crab Rangoon is the best!!! The price is also very affordable! Staff is very friendly and I'm excited to dine in soon!
