Where to Pick Up Coffee in Phoenix Right Now | Eater Phoenix

"Local roaster Cortez Coffee provides the beans for King Coffee. Service is always excellent and although the space is small, the welcome is generous. There are espressos, cold brews, and flavored lattes. The food menu features vegetarian, ham, and turkey sandwiches, as well as pastries. Dining is available indoors, but be prepared to wear a mask." - Rudri Patel

Google
King Coffee Shop has quickly become my favorite spot! I work nearby and noticed this cute little coffee shop on the side of the road. Tired of the usual Starbucks, I decided to try it out, and I’m so glad I did! The shop itself is charming, with a great vibe for working or studying. I had an amazing iced dirty chai, and my friend loved the breakfast burrito! The staff was friendly, and everything was made quickly. I’ve already been back multiple times in just a few weeks! If you’re in the area, definitely check it out—you won’t be disappointed.

Google
Such a hidden gem right next to ASU and there is a bus station 2! The coffee here is tasty. The place itself is cozy and beautifully set up, perfect for gatherings with friends, a quiet reading session, studying, or just unwinding with a good drink. The atmosphere is so relaxing, and the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, they really make you feel at home. Can’t wait to come back! ☕📚✨

On my way to the site the Saturday morning before Superbowl Sunday, I stopped by for a delicious breakfast burrito stuffed with hash browns, fresh and perfectly cooked bacon with chunks of eggs, served with the best salsa I've had in ages. I paired this with a freshly squeezed limeade and a tart apple, then sat quietly on the unassuming porch, next to my bike and prepped for the morning 🌄

Super cool environment and workers! Coffee was amazing!

Google
This super chill spot kind of reminds of Flagstaff’s toasted owl, but in a smaller location. Electric, room to study/work, and some chill tunes. The server was quick with my drink. It was delicious, definitely recommend.

Google
Really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere in the early morning hours. The Italian Soda and the Lemon Danish were delicious! The cashier was kind enough to offer me two small danishes for the price of one, the servers were so sweet! Definetly a nice spot to sit back and relax, and enjoy a sip. Definetly would recommend. God bless you and you're wonderful employees💖

Google
Great place to stop for a cup of coffee on a long bike ride. They have outdoor seating which I prefer when on my bike but if you like to sit inside they have plenty of room for a small group. The coffee was delicious and they have your standard pastries, though if you want one you better get there early. I arrived around 8:30 and they were already low on selection.

Google
This was a nice coffee shop, in a "great" location (great b/c it's accessible via walking from a lot of houses, apartments, and businesses (incl. ASU)). However, the biggest challenge is due to its location - and a lack of decent parking when busy. I didn't have any food or drink when I visited (I visited for a meeting), so I can't comment on food prices or quality (although I can say that there were a lot of options, and the other participant in my meeting didn't have any complaints).

Yelp
Nice coffee coffee shop. Good place to do work or catch up with friends. Parking is a bit interesting. Easy but make sure to ask the waitress for the validation code when you order. 2 hour limit for parking. Lot is in the back

Yelp
Had the opportunity to enjoy King Coffee yesterday! My husband and I decided to take advantage of some of the last beautiful mornings before summer hit and rode our bikes to King Coffee! It's a cute place nestled off of Mill Ave; tad south of University. We didn't do anything crazy and just got some cold brew and and iced espresso with dash of cinnamon and honey. Coffee was very reasonably priced and service was quick. We did want to get a breakfast burrito, but they were out, along with the breaky paninis. I'm but sure if it was coming off holiday weekend or what not, but it was 8 AM, so tad odd, but they did have bagels and some pastries. The place is super cute though and they have cocktail, beer and mead during select days of the week. As well as other food offerings and small bites. I didn't get to check out the whole menu, but seems like a fun spot to meet up with a friend. Lots of people rotating in and out, always a good sign! They offer couple outdoor tables and have plenty of two tops inside as well! - Will definitely be revisiting again!

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop. It's very warm and welcoming vibe. I got mocha raspberry coffee, so delicious. Made perfect. I can feel the love. Girl at cashier was adorable too

Yelp
Locals only vibe. Eclectic indoor coffee shop with local art displayed that's for sale at a reasonable price. Good coffee with options for add-in syrups and alternative milks served by a kind barista. I came here to study, but I imagine it would be a cute first date.

Makenzie W.

Yelp
A very cute, cozy space. It can get loud during busy times since it is a small space, so if you get overstimulated you may want to bring headphones. The food is reasonably priced-- the turkey pesto panini was good but nothing super special, so for $7 I'm satisfied. I tried the autumn leaf cold brew, which I'd describe as a snickerdoodle flavor, and it was good. I love all of the art on the walls!

Yelp
Very cute place! Great customer service. I had an iced chai latte and a veggie panini. I was happy with it, and I will definitely be going back!

Yelp
In a town littered with many specialty coffee shops this is my favorite little indie shop in all of Tempe! It's a very intimate little place, it can be challenging to find a seating for groups of 5 or more people when they're busy. But we travel in two's so seating is always available. Josh is our favorite Barista!
google avatar

Kaysha R.

Yelp
Really good coffee, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful barista and a comfortable place to pop out the laptop for a bit. I'm a fan! I went with the Caramel latte, but he recommended the in house vanilla and also lavender options. Yum! Pro tip- park in back, enter your license plate via the app and get the validation code from the barista for free two hour parking.

Yelp
Good coffee (dirty chai) and good simple breakfast (breakfast panini). Nothing too new to report here. Lots of indoor seating, some outdoor seating. Quick service. Prices are fair... and I really always have to give extra kudos to coffee shops that serve warm breakfast items. Definitely a nice local spot to try out.

Yelp
Great locally owned coffee shop. I enjoyed very tasty espresso in a caramel latte. Comfy seating. Fast service. And they have tasteful postcards and wall art which you may purchase to support local artists.

Yelp
A quiet coffee shop right by ASU that's a great place to get work done! Parking is less than ideal, but it was a cool little shop. I got the lavender earl gray tea iced, which was VERY floral/the lavender was a bit overpowering but I still enjoyed it.

Yelp
While the parking situation isn't particularly great, this small coffee shop offers a relaxed environment to get some studying done or to meet up with friends. I ordered an iced chai latte and wasn't disappointed. Pricing is comparable to other establishments in the area!

Sophia S.

Yelp
Barista told us we were in the wrong coffee shop even though we had already paid online. After realizing they take online orders, we received two lattes that tasted as though there wasn't coffee in either of them. Very disappointed since I saw such good reviews online.

Yelp
I come to Tempe pretty often and have been looking for another coffee place that isn't Cartel. No hard feelings to Cartel, I love it there, just want to switch things up. King Coffee is a cozy little shop with a small parking lot in the back. The parking itself is easy but the process of having your parking "validated" is a pain. First, you have to text a number with your license plate, then you get a text and open a link, then you have to get a validation code from the barista. Yes, this process is as dull and ridiculous as it sounds. No fault to the business - I doubt this was their choice. They had a cortado on the menu so I ordered that and a jalapeño cheddar bagel. The baristas were nice and drinks came out fast for a two person team. I noticed as the shop got busier that they really got drinks out quickly even with a long line. My cortado was fine and, to be honest, better than expected for a shop that seems to focus on more fun flavored lattes. The coffee was very roasted and the milk was steamed pretty well considering it was a regular silk oat milk. As a barista, I prefer barista blends of alternative milks for steaming but, again, this isn't a craft spot and I feel like I got what I paid for in the best way. I've had cortados at speciality shops that taste terrible - this was better than that. They have a lot of specialty drinks on the menu if you're a latte person - one that piqued my interest was a matcha with marshmallow. Yum! Will grab that next time. My bagel was fine but didn't have any jalapeños on it. In total, I spent $10 with tip which is significantly less than a craft coffee place. I was okay with a bland bagel. Honestly, the coffee wasn't terrible and the bagel was fine. The first thing that was most frustrating was that the Wi-Fi (both of them!) cut out multiple times once the place filled up. When it did work, it was wildly slow and interrupted the work I was doing. When I left the shop, I had a parking ticket after going through the whole rigamarole. I had to contact the parking company's customer service and tell them I was given the ticket incorrectly. If I wouldn't have had proof that I was in the shop, I would have been fined $44 dollars for parking at a business I supported. Really put a damper on my experience. Maybe I'll come back for that matcha but I don't think it will be any time soon.

Yelp
It is not the worst space if you would like to work. Mostly metal chairs, some pillows and one couch available. Not too busy. The staff is friendly and were helpful with the order suggestions. Pretty good menu selection. I got lavender latte. Was surprised with house made lavender syrup, tastes good and rich flavor. Only concern, my coffee was too milky, was hard to feel the coffee flavor I was going for. I also got turkey panini, it came warm but got cold fast. It not too bad, but need more flavor/seasoning to it. Portion size is not too small but also not really big. It was nice to get choice of chips or a fruit as a side. Staff cleaned tables frequently. Order total was $13.24. Overall, pretty good place, I would rate it 7 out of 10. I would come back if I was passing by and wanted a quick coffee stop.

Yelp
I finished class at 11:45, so I decided to treat myself to King Coffee! I ordered a large iced caramel latte with oat milk (~6.50) and a turkey pesto panini (7). The latte was a bit too sweet, but still good! I really liked the panini as it was warm and crispy even after I walked back to campus with it. Overall, I would come back to King Coffee, but not to work as it is very busy during the work week.

Yelp
Delicious drip and espresso coffee It's cute inside too nice to hang out and chillax

Yelp
I only came here once so I can't comment on overall quality, but the time I was here, the drink quality we received was WAY under par for any coffee house let alone one in a town with so many amazing options. Prices are already on the moderate to high side. We paid $6 and change after tip per drink and the espresso maker was not calibrated. We noticed it poured a 26 second shot when it's meant to be half that and it came out black. She also didn't know how to properly froth foam and didn't even have a thermometer gauge to ensure the milk didn't burn. The product was a gross a*% cap. After one sip we couldn't do it. I usually am too afraid to ask for changes and just toss mine, but my bf was so underwhelmed he kindly asked for his to be remade. The gal working still didn't know to recalibrate but she was nice and we noticed she's better at lattes than caps. Overall, due to the training that takes place here, I can't recommend it as there still be spotty quality at best, consistently burnt espresso and scorched milk at worst. There's amazing coffee places in town, but as is, this place doesn't make the cut yet.

Yelp
One of my new fav. coffee shops before I head to campus to go teach. Here, I was introduced to the matcha latte with almond milk and a shot of espresso. That ish CHANGED MY LIFE! I've been ordering this two to three times a week before I head to ASU to go teach classes. They renovated quite nicely on the inside too. Only thing that I wish they would bring back is more of the vegan pastries from Wild Rabbit as well as the vegan burritos. Other than that, y'all are rockin it.

Yelp
I came to King Coffee early this morning to do some work and found atmosphere to be perfect for productivity. I had a black coffee which tasted great and was served hot but King Coffee also has tons of other delicious sounding drink options (including seasonal pumpkin drinks) and breakfast foods. The coffee shop was nice and quiet which was perfect for me as I needed to attend a short meeting. There was also plenty of seating inside the coffee shop. I'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
King Coffee was so accommodating to my study group and I. I always bring an extension cord for studying but it wasn't necessary at all - plenty of places to plug in. Parking is free!! Just take a screenshot

Yelp
King Coffee is a nice, cozy, down-to-earth cafe on the walk to campus. I like to work in cafes, and sometimes I start to hate the by-the-numbers 4th wave reclaimed wood, steampunk light bulb, sour $4 coffee vibe. King Coffee is decidedly not that. The folks behind the counter are always sweet, the couches are charmingly dilapidated, and the nooks to hide in are plentiful (though they really broke my heart when they knocked down the weird desk corners in the back). A nice, sleepy neighborhood coffee shop.

Yelp
At first glance I would not know this is a coffee shop. It's casually tucked away in an unassuming side strip that I drove right on by when I was trying to find it. Parking is primarily in the back of the building and there's an alley that can be accessed to get there which saved me an extra trip around the block. I started with a cortado which is a lot like an espresso shot with cream in it. Then I added a yogurt blueberry and oat parfait with a latte. The combination definitely kicked my motivation into high gear. The shop itself is as quaint as it is functional. I always appreciate the display of local artwork for sale. There were two study desk areas with electrical access and a great variety of other seating options both inside and outside. I will say it was a little unnerving that there was no soap in the bathroom. I'm hoping there was a separate sink with soap in the kitchen area. That made me a little uneasy. Other than that one detail, I probably would give this place a higher rating.

Yelp
Friendly and personable customer service - we always love that :) Quaint and cozy coffee shop! I came in needing strong coffee and strong coffee is what I got! Very tastey and cured my caffeine headache.
google avatar

Yelp
With the construction going on parking can be tricky. There is parking in the back so if you come that is your best bet. I got the cold brew just black because they were out of oat milk and it wasn't something I would recommend. It was a bit stale tasting. If you like sweetener it wouldn't be an issue but if you like straight black cold brew I would suggest somewhere else. The employee was courteous and nice and they have tables to sit at to do homework or just sit and relax. I did see some board games and stuff I'm assuming you can use while there. In all I will give a different drink a try if I go back.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop! It's where I go to get my work done. It's normally pretty quiet, and I'm always feeling the music they play. I'm on my way to getting a free shirt...(apparently if you get 10(?) punch cards completed, then you receive a free King Coffee shirt). If you stay there for a while, you can get free refills on coffee or hot water for tea. The coffee they use is brighter and more fruity than what you might be used to (something I've noticed). I either get the drip coffee [$2 for reg/ $2.5 for large] or earl grey lavender tea. They have two desks in the back that are really nice if you want to focus and study because they're cut-outs in the wall, so you're pretty secluded. There are about 9-10 spots for parking in the back! And if you're an ASU student, it's right across the street from Gammage. Alsoo~~ this is important - they've changed the hours a couple times since I started going there two years ago, so you should follow their Facebook page to get updates!
google avatar

Yelp
Not only were the drinks amazing, the customer service is too great! The vibe of this place is relaxing. I love it!

Craig C.

Yelp
Well prepared coffee in a smallish, cosy, quiet, comfortable setting. Good, friendly service. Though it's small I've always found room. Park in back and get validation.

Yelp
Cappuccinos, cold brews, and cookies- anything that starts with a C, King does really well. I mean, they probably do other stuff well too, but I thoroughly vetted the C items. Cappuccino was well balanced and the cold brew is super-smooth and has practically no acidity. Both pair well with a cookie, but the chocolate was the favorite, almost like a homemade Oreo. Watch out for the brownies though, they're vegan and made with black beans- as the barista put it, I'm not a fan but some people are really into that.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
My sister-in-law recommended this place and wanted us to give it a try. She knows I am a huge coffee fan and want to try every coffee place, so we went here recently. I ordered a 16oz hot vanilla latte and a lemon poppyseed muffin. My sister-in-law ordered the same drink but iced. Both she and my husband got cheese danishes. The two baristas were really helpful, friendly, and nice. They were quick to make the drinks, answered any questions we had, and always had a smile. We enjoyed our drinks/food inside and they were good. The muffin was a little on the dry side but went well with my drink. My drink was good - not too sweet but not real strong either. It tasted like a light roast and was pleasant. Overall, if in the area, I'd go again.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
This place is quite adorable and it's obviously a favorite of the ASU crowd because almost every table and chair were filled with studying students. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot in the back if the one non-handicapped spot in the front is filled. I had a delicious iced pumpkin latte and my hubby loved his cold brew coffee. It was more flavorful and roasty than other cold brews he's had. They have a punch card too, so get your punches with every cup! The pastries look really good so bring your will power if you're on a diet!
google avatar

Yelp
Very tasty cortado. Great music. Unique ambiance. Some pretty funky drinks if you're into it. Banana nut bread was great. I loved the messaging of plastic reduction they had in the place. They could go one better by switching to compostable.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
That don't open early or stay open late, but they do make great coffee, tea and espresso drinks. Bonus points for having a bike rack right out front and playing a nice mix of eclectic music. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable.

Yelp
Hate to have to give a review like this. Debated for a day whether to post or contact the owner. My commitment is that I'll give an honest review of my experience, regardless, so I will. If I ever go back to King Coffee I can update my review. So, here's the real deal. I visited yesterday for a business meeting. I'm not a big coffee drinker because I don't do well with caffeine, get bad headaches, stressed and jittery. But, I love the taste and smell and I know a great cup of coffee because I've tried many types and roasts in various countries. So I Always get decaf. The positives: the environment is cozy and comfortable. The girl who took my order was friendly. I like that they give you a real, ceramic coffee mug instead of disposables, better for the environment. That's where the positives end. Parking is brutal, no spots in front, maybe 8 or 10 spots in back shared with other businesses. If there aren't any spots, which there weren't, there is NOWHERE else to park for miles, yes really, nowhere without "you'll be towed" signs. When I finally got in, there were 2 people in front of me in line, just 2, and it took a painfully long 10 full minutes to get to the register while my business partner sat and waited for me. 10 minutes for 2 people, not good. I told the girl I can't do caffeine and asked for simple brewed decaf. She said they don't have that. Huh? Aren't you a coffee shop? Okay, no problem, she recommended a decaf Americana and explained it's just decaf expresso with water. Terrific I said, can I get it with almond milk? Yes, no problem she said and told me they'd bring it out to me. Sounded great. 10 minutes later the extremely bland guy in back shouted out something about an Americana and waited for me to walk up and get it rather than delivering it as I was told. So I did. I walked back to the table, took a sip and realized there was no almond milk in it and there was none out on the condiment table. Back up to the front again where they poured me some. The coffee was good. Things had taken so long that I had to drink it faster than normal because time was then short. As I neared the bottom of the cup, the jitters, stress and headache started. It DEFINITELY was NOT decaf. It was awful. Had to leave. As I got into my car, I was accosted by one of the homeless guys mentioned in other reviews. He walked up and literally banged his fist on my car door, not the glass, the paint. I took care of it with him firmly but nicely, jeesh, what else could happen here? I made it back to my office and was miserable for several more hours waiting for the caffeine to wear off. This was definitely NOT worth it! I drank a lot of water and sweated through the rest of my day. If I were someone with a Cardiovascular condition, I asked for decaf and had this experience, I'd probably have justification for a lawsuit. Would I go back? Absolutely not based on this experience.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop that's tucked away in a corner off of Mill Ave. I appreciate the natural lighting, the African roobios tea is so yummy and I've tried one of their homemade Oreos which were bomb. It's a great place to meet up with a few friends, read a book solo, or pull open your laptop and work away. Free wifi, outlets and plenty of good vibes.

Yelp
So awesome!! Yummy coffee, beautiful latte art! I had the Americano and I can't recommend it enough. Perfect for my late night studying and jam sessions. They also had exotic teas and yummy pastries. Try the oatmeal cream pies!! I'm looking forward to trying more things in their menu. So glad I found this little gem in tempe.

Yelp
This response is more about a specific incident rather than the coffee. Overall I've always liked King. It has friendly staff and great coffee. However, there really needs to be an update on protocol on how to handle awkward or possibly threatening situations caused by homeless people. There are a few options to sit outside King so sometimes there will be a homeless person lying down or seated and every time I've been there while a homeless person is there they stay around because they're not bothering anyone. But just today I was at King and a homeless man was outside lying down. After a bit he got up and started to go up to everyone outside. When he made his way inside he propositioned me for sex and instead of kicking him out, calling the cops, doing anything, the barista asked if he would like a cup of coffee. That's right, instead of doing something about it she asked to serve him coffee. I told him to get away and when he went outside he kept going up to people and lingering. The barista asked me if I was okay so she obviously heard what he said. After about 15 minutes he reappeared in front of my view, on the other side of the window, and tried to get me to look at him. When he banged on a door that is usually locked another barista told him to stop, but did not tell him to leave or did not call the police or do anything to take care of the situation. When I went out to my car I hurried to get in and lock the door because he had appeared from the side of the building and began banging on my car window. After I managed to reverse my car and leave he still followed right behind me on his bike. While I do applaud King for being a very welcoming place to gather for people of all walks, including homeless people, there has to be more done when things like this happen. I'm sure something like this is a rarity, but it really only takes common sense to figure to do something, anything, to get rid of someone who is acting that way at your coffee shop. Will not be returning to King.

Yelp
Super fast, super polite staff, solid/fair prices, and very cute inside. I got an iced vanilla latte and it was very good (they have the nice crushed ice as-well). Definitely will come back :)

Yelp
Small, simple, and perfect are the three words that come to mind. King coffee (originally Three Roots) was a cool spot a few years ago, but since their expansion they have become my go-to when I'm down at ASU (which would still be the case even if they weren't in close proximity to COOR where I'm at 90% of the time). They have unusually great study space, a lounge area, consistent wifi, local art on the walls, and a sturdy little food menu (sandwich, bagels, & pastries- including some vegan) to go with their coffee. Also, they are walking distance from Chipotle- I frequently get a burrito bowl to-go and eat at King over a cappuccino, iced tea or my guilty pleasure: Italian soda sans cream (because they have more flavors than most coffee shops [other than Starbucks] carry in the area), then delve into a study marathon at one of their large tables or intimate walled booths. Haven't tried their pastries but that's merely because of constrained effort- they look divine. I believe there's some good cold case grab-and-go options as well if you're running to class. Local, independently family-owned. Consistently friendly and competent service- they have a cute about page on their baristas (http://kingcoffeeaz.com/about/) Ambiance is casual, but undoubtedly third wave. I have no complaints, and not enough great things to say.

Yelp
They have vegan donuts here ( not everything is vegan, but you have to ask ) and they are sooooooo good, very tasty and not dry at all ! The Wild Rabbit makes their vegan donuts and even though they are $4.00 a piece, they are sooo delicious!

Yelp
I was waiting for this spot to open up since I'm right across the street for art class! I ordered an iced mocha latte and it was great! The mocha latte satisfied my chocolate craving, they use Ghirardelli chocolates and Carmel sauce! So yummy! They had some great soft pop music playing and a small indoor seating area. They also have pastries and toddys! If they ever are looking for local artists to fill in their wall space I hope I'm able to get some of my work up their to fill those bare walls. :) amberzart dot com

Yelp
Super friendly staff, I ordered the seasonal special lavender white mocha and it was the perfect cup of coffee when you need something light but delicious. I also ordered the vegan banana bread to which I was offered it toasted as well with a side of peanut butter if I wanted. Plus it has a cute ambiance inside that makes you want to stay and read.

Yelp
Super nice, locally owned coffee shop with a great vibe. I had a cappuccino and it was excellent! Parking is limited, but I rode my bike and there is plenty of bike parking. Staff were welcoming.

Yelp
I'm so impressed with the service, deliciousness and ambiance! And good prices, especially on pastries. Plus Everything is 20% off after 6pm which rocks! Loved the African rooibos and oatmeal cream pie. I can't believe I never heard of this place before. DEFINITELY coming back and referring friends.

Yelp
Came here with a friend as he was passing through across the country, because it is a short walk from work at ASU. We both ordered bacon egg burritos and they were bomb! A lot of food for a lunch and was very tasty. He got a latte and he loved it. I got a double shot of espresso and it was strong to kick my butt back in gear after lunch to get back to work. I really like this place and it was a super plus because his dog was allowed to come in and sit with us inside to escape the heat!

Besides having the best Matcha Latte in town, I strictly come here because the staff always puts me in a good mood. They just hire so well here and its really refreshing that the attitudes at the front are always so welcoming and positive. Keep it up King! This is rare in Phoenix/Tempe. :)
