On the Grid : Kingma's Market

"Kingma's Market is a smorgasbord of all that is wonderful and good in the world, or at least Michigan. Around 50% of Kingma's Market is Michigan-local, with produce harvested in the morning and delivered directly to their counter. There are over 400 kinds of cheese and a wall of beer with none of that domestic crap. Lots of color and variety to be found here!" - Extra Credit Projects

Google
We love everything about Kingma's but this review is about the deli. We order various trays for family gatherings and every one, every time has been perfect. I don't know how they always manage to exceed expectations but they do!

I’ve loved Kingmas since I was a kid, and this weekend I got to share it with my fiancé. I think it’s safe to say he loves it too! We’ll definitely be back again!

Google
My favorite local shop! Their freshly made food is so good. The staff are very friendly and accommodating! Yes, they aren't as affordable as Meijer or Family Fare, but you get what you pay for, which is quality.

Google
Kingma's was wonderful. As I walked in through the lawn garden or front I was greeted and asked if I needed help finding anything. I spent a considerable time perusing their products, many which are local. They sell dry good, frozen goods, fresh produce, all kinds of meats. There house made sausages are excellent, I grilled three types of brats last night. They also have a large selection of prepared good. And if that is not enough, there is an attached coffee shop. This place is a treat!

Google
Brats. Good! BBQ Jerky Sticks. Good! Jerky. Thumbs down. I get it, Jerky is expensive. But wanted to try Kingma’s and this was a miss and super inconsistent for the price. Bought 0.36lb, one piece had no flavor and was so dry. It crunched like the sound my dog makes when eating a pigs ear. Other piece was overly salty and so dry it kept getting dryer as you chewed. This isn’t a dig on Kingma’s, it’s an opportunity to change the way you go to market with all products. We pay good money for this stuff. Please fix your jerky.

Google
We love Kingmas market and used their deli catering for a graduation party. We ordered 25 whole sandwiches and 50 pretzel sliders and our guests raved about the size and quality of the food! Ordering (and confirming) was wonderful with the staff. I highly recommend considering Kingma’s catering for your next event!

Google
Such a beautiful place, lovely selection of cheeses, meats, they have a discount rack and plants outside. We found a Floridian avocado we are very excited to try! Check it out

Google
The "manager" Nate, said, "We don't need to date the Kings Hawaiian rolls." They have 3 different fresh by dates on many items in this market. Only buy what you will use today. I live in the neighborhood and wish they would do a better job of rotating their stock, so I could just go there quickly. Been ripped off by their indifference to customers and really into their profits, too many times now.

Yelp
I bought three stuffed peppers at 8.99 a pound for a total of over 17.00 dollars. The peppers was full of sausage meat not ground beef. Sausage meat is so much cheaper! You are taking advantage of customers! Shame on you! Your profit is huge!

Yelp
Had a great visit to Kingma's today! I have always enjoyed going but they recently had a renovation that makes the store so much easier to get around! They focus on Local West Michigan and Michigan items which is very fun. I love their deli counter. Their deli meat is top-of-the-line, and their premade salads and sandwiches are awesome. Their meat counter is large and you'll definitely find something you like and their specialty items are fantastic! It's always a fun trip to go! I took home some loaded potato soup that you can get at the deli counter and I might be going back weekly to have it. It was so good!

Yelp
Kingma's is a locally-owned market and home and garden center that's been around for 80 years. They carry a wide selection of local and Michigan-made products in this small but mighty store. I love going in and just browsing because there's so much to see. Check out the local produce, bulk snacks and treats, large deli case, meat counter, greenhouse, and more! There are always deals and sales, and I often will just pop by without a list, which is dangerous but fun. (I lead a thrilling life, I tell you what. lol) The last time Nate and I were at Kingma's, I got a pork shoulder and some delicious local Little Rooster hamburger buns to make pulled pork. The meat counter employees were helpful and friendly. We also got a beautiful potted mum from the greenhouse - they had tons of different colors and sizes, perfect for fall decor. Kingma's also houses Sparrow Coffee, a cute little coffee counter tucked away on the side of the building. There is ample parking in their designated lot, but you'll see plenty of area neighbors walking to and from Kingma's. The aisles can be a little cramped, but I think it adds to the charm. Love having this local gem near our house!

Yelp
Shopping here since 1960 their customer base grew so large they moved out to Creston Heights . They have the best butchers and selection of meats than any market here. Chris smokes their salmon and sausages. You are welcomed to taste. The assortment of fresh meat and seafood is incomparable . Gigantic shrimp for gumbo , . Gigantic wine selection. The best deli with homemade salads , soups seafood spreads available. The aisle of sauces and spices for gourmet cooks are packed with every dry rub .spice , and marinade selection of hot sauces is insane. Aged cheeses from every country fresh baked brioche, potato rolls At last the fresh baked goods oh my goodness You may taste anything in the market you wish. In the spring the flower market opens full of annuals and perennials . My next trip is Feb 5th I'll send you pictures that will make you come shop

Yelp
Mr Neumann was such a great worker. He provided me with the highest quality groceries and definitely earned Kingmas a new customer. He is definitely deserving of a raise.

Yelp
Amazing deli salads and amazing deli employees! These people really care about their customers----Jill knows all the regulars by name! Her Quinoa Bowls are awesome.

Yelp
Kingma's Market focuses on local products and specialty items. One of our favorite reasons to visit Kingma's is the candy wall. Behold. Every kind of candy your heart could ever desire. You can't miss it. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Check out their extensive collection of kombucha, barbecue sauce, cheese and locally roasted coffee! Yes, we know, that's quite an odd list, but trust me when I say that they have a great selection of all of these things among hundreds of other local goodies (like bread from Wealthy Street Bakery!) ⁣⁣⁣

Yelp
Kingmas is our go-to local market. Great place to go grab a couple of things when you're in a rush and a large selection for the size of the store. A+ for beer, wine and candy selection and also a great place to find a huge variety of local products and plants. We normally stop in a couple of times a week but now that they added a Sparrows coffee we will definitely frequent more often!

Yelp
Excellent everything on shelves. Just pricey, but today, not unusual. Servers behind meat counter are very nice & helpful.

Yelp
This is honestly one of the better markets if not the best food market in Grand Rapids they have great Artisanal selections and just great quality food selections including bread and meat. The staff is so friendly!! They also have a great plant selection so this is really like a very high-quality market. It is much better than Bridge Street market any day.

Emily U.

Yelp
Only our cashier was friendly. Not one other employee smiled at us. One employee stared at my family, making us feel very unwelcome. Won't be returning or recommending. Sad experience. Owners should feel embarrassed.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool little grocery store and surprisingly great selection of plants and flowers in the summer months! I bought an indoor plant that was great quality and very affordable! Not the most friendly workers so that is why I gave it a 4 store but I can get over that as the selection of unique foods and drinks was worth it! My girlfriend bought a kombucha and was amazed at the brands and variety they carried!

Yelp
A lovely fruit and meat market in the heart of Creston. I love coming here for the fruits and vegetables, and there are some wonderful selections of meats and cheeses. The beer and wine section is quite nice. Overall a very nice store.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
As long as I have lived in this neighborhood I have enjoyed shopping here. The atmosphere is very clean and classy. While the prices may be a little higher than a Meijer the reason is because of the quality of product. The produce is always fresh and fully ripe. The variety of cheeses and mixed olives has always been a big hit with my family. They also have a very large selection of craft beer and wines. I must admit that I have never used the meat counter, but it is something I plan on using this summer for steaks.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Everyone should have a place like this in the neighborhood! Fresh produce, hand cut meats from real butchers, a quality cheese shop with knowledgable staff to answer questions, fresh flowers, a huge imported beer selection and (best yet) loads of wine. Kingma's is a gem! i stop by most evenings on my way home and cook fresh from what looks interesting. If they had a seafood counter you would never need to go anywhere else. Dave's meat counter has homemade bacon and sausage and when in season don't pass by the Soulvaki. Everyone should have a place like this in the neighborhood but not everyone is as lucky as I am!

Yelp
Seriously one of the best stores in GR. Their meat counter is divine, and they have all sorts of innovative and unique stuff on their shelves for everyone. (They even have Michigan old-time favorite sons Faygo and Towne Club Pop in GLASS bottles!) You will find nothing spoiled here - everything is fresh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. I don't usually go there for full on grocery shopping, but usually to hit the meat counters, the cheese aisle and maybe some fresh fruit - and I never leave disappointed.

Yelp
I'm from Atlanta, visiting my bf's family in GRap. I had heard stories of his family grilling brauts from Kingma's, and when I was finally able to visit this week, it exceeded my expectations. Kingma's is a nice neighborhood market that would be worth a drive for if it weren't right down the street. Kingma's has an impressive wall of candies & snacks, local produce, specialty condiments and a huge meat selection. We bought house-made hot beef sticks, McClure's spicy garlic pickles made in Detroit, and Hudsonville ice cream. His family grilled brauts on our last night and they were great If I lived in GRap, I'd make Kingma's a regular stop.

Yelp
Love this markets local selection. alcohol selection is great. Would like a white miso paste for convenience as I use it often in ramen and they have every other miso‍

Yelp
I like the meat in the meat department, but the people that work throughout this store have got to be some of the rudest that i have ever dealt with in a store like this! I will not be back here!
google avatar

Lindsay O.

Yelp
My visit for Kingma's was for recycling a milk bottle, 24 Towne Club soda bottles and 3 specialty beer bottles (that I bought, here). Success! My only problem is when I go there is I want to buy everything. The fruits and veggies look so good, bright and colorful. Plus, they have blood oranges this time of year too and I love blood oranges. I settled on a 6-pack of Epic Brewing (fm Salt Lake, Utah), a slab piece of beef jerky Cajun, and a Diet Coke. I resisted some pretty spring flowers, a really impressive hunk of blue cheese and blood oranges. There is next time and with that comes more to choose from. Plus, the people are all knowledgeable butchers, cashiers, garden, stockers, cheese, everyone. If there is something you don't see it just ask and they probably can get it for you.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Love that they support local!!!! Surprisingly great prices and tons of unique options to choose from. My favorite place to shop.
google avatar

Pamela B.

Yelp
Been here a few times as its in my neighborhood. Great cheese, fresh veggies, cheeses, and meat. That being said their pricing structure would be considered nothing short of price gouging. Coupled with some rude sales people and I do not plan to go there again.
google avatar

Tanya E.

Yelp
Kingmas has been my market since I moved to GR, but they really let me down last night. I was shopping at 7ish on a weeknight and went to the deli counter, where I was told they would not slice cheese for me as the slicer had already been cleaned for the night. The store closes at 8. I worked at a deli in high school and we started breaking down the machine and cleaning it an hour before close, but if someone came in while we were open, we stopped and served them. Even if it meant staying late. Disappointing.
google avatar

Yelp
Love everything about this specialty grocery store! Make sure to try their homemade lunch meat. Just go there!

Yelp
Looking for flowers for the mother in law for mom's day and I tried to call this place for a flower delivery. First off if you're on their own website they have a phone number but no area code, so being from MA I didn't remember the area code. In this day and age shops should have area codes on their website for people to call. I finally figured it out, called and they couldn't answer my question so they put me on hold for "Bob" the other manager. Waiting for "Bob", I heard a click and the phone went dead. "Bob" must be synonymous with hang up on this guy! I went elsewhere to order my flowers. I still don't know if this place even does it.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to shop in GR! The selection of beers, cheeses, fruit and veggies, bulk but packaged (fruit, nuts, chocolates) and choice cut meats is always worthy of a visit. Yes, you might spend a little more here for some items, but if you choose wisely it's well worth it. A surprising amount of great craft beers from around the country. Decent prices as well. The staff is always friendly and can answer most questions you might have. There is a nice selection of Michigan products including a good array of breads. I love the house made jerky! The BBQ sticks are awesome, but any of their sticks are tasty. Give this small wonderful market a visit if your ever in the Cheshire Village area. You won't leave disappointed.
google avatar

Kat F.

Yelp
This is an amazing little market off of Plainfield in the Cheshire Village in Grand Rapids. Often on Saturdays they have sampling of new and local beers and wine. Great meat counter! best bacon i have ever bought! Amazing brats and a wide selection of artisan breads and cheeses! Plenty of organic and gluten free options. Tons of whole bean coffee and an amazing wall of bulk food treats and snacks unlike anywhere i have been! Great deals on plants and seasonal things like fruit and veggies. Quite often they also have a seafood display with king crab and great deals on salmon and other fishes!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I truly miss this place since I moved out of GR. It always smells like jerky, since they make their own in house. They have the best produce, and items you can't find anywhere else. They are pricy, but you get what you pay for: high quality local products.
google avatar

Ketturah M.

Yelp
This is a great place shop when you don't want to go to the big box store and you want to get something quick. They have a little bit of everything. They have a big selection of cheese and Great selection of local craft beer and wine. I love how also they have a lot of local finds food. This is a fun little grocery store in Grand Rapids. if you shop there a lot they do actually remember your name too.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been a customer of this family owned business beginning when they were located at Boston Square in the SE part of Grand Rapids. I was a young child years ago when I'd go with my mother. You can find less expensive places for produce but it is fun to shop here. They have good selections of such things as beers, wines, salad dressing, crackers and lots more. I really like their meat department. Great steaks, chops, chicken, and specialty meats. Yum! Also, their bedding plant selection in the spring and summer is very good and good quality, too. All of this will just keep me coming back for lots more years!
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
Love kingma's!! Who doesn't!? You can get all sorts of bulk candies here, tons of food packages items, lots of organics and naturals, and I've heard their meats are excellent! I mainly adore it for the beer! There are sometimes real gems lurking about in here longer than most places! If you're on a hunt - definitely stop by!
google avatar

Sharon F.

Yelp
This is my go-to grocer when I don't go to the Fulton Farmer's Market. I've become ultra concerned about the source of my meat. Thankfully they have a list on the counter of where the meat is from. I also try to buy as many local goods as possible. I can find my bread, eggs, milk, and pasta from the Farmer's Market right at Kingma's.

M R.

Yelp
Great selection of beer, wine, cheese and other specialty groceries. Recommend for anyone tired of the same old grocery stores.
google avatar

Deelilah J.

Yelp
Pricey but pretty much the best selection of higher end goods I've seen, especially for beer and wine and being a neighborhood store. The meat is obviously higher quality and I've been very pleased with everything I've gotten. They also have a nice selection of cheese. The smell is heavenly and makes you want to just curl up and fall asleep here! If I had one gripe it would be the fresh produce section, it's very limited. They always have pretty good clearance beer too so that's worth a check.

Wendy J.

Yelp
I have been a longtime customer of Kingma's on Plainfield. I usually stop 1-2 times a month to pick up perishables - meat/cheese/fruit/vegetables. I appreciate the great quality products as well as their expansive selection. In late November, I stopped to pick up a variety of meat from Kingma's meat counter. I purchased butterfly chops, sirloin roast, and boneless skinless chicken breast. All of the cuts were wrapped individually for easy freezing/thawing/portion control. i defrosted (1) chicken breast several days later and prepared with spices and baked in a stone dish to retain moisture. The chicken was disgusting and inedible. It's texture was odd - rubbery and tasteless. I called Kingma's the next day to speak to the meat department and share my experience. The associate told me to bring the chicken back with my receipt and they would give me replacement items. I stopped a few days later with chicken and receipt in hand. I explained the situation and advised I did not expect a refund and wanted to get something other than chicken. The associate was incredibly rude to me - 1) couldn't believe I was bringing something back, 2) they've never had complaints, 3) he wasn't going to give me any money back even if it was a $1. I left the store with my replacement items but given this experience I'm not sure when or if I will return. Maybe the associate was having a bad day and I was the target. Regardless of the reasons, this treatment should never be the norm. I support local, small businesses because I believe in our community's growth and sustainability. There are plenty of other small, family owned shops in the Grand Rapids area to explore that sell fresh cuts of meat, and flavorful, expressive cheeses made in Michigan. i imagine these businesses are looking for new customers.

Yelp
I didn't even know that this place sold beer but a few people told me to check it out, nice selection of craft beers!

Julie W.

Yelp
I love, love, love Kingma's! It's in the neighborhood where I grew up and later owned my own home. Now I live on the lakeshore, and every time I'm in GR (a lot) I stop at Kingma's and stock up on my favorites! Meat selection is one of the very best in West Michigan. Store has recently expanded produce department and is offering more, which is great. Nice wine selection, great selection of Michigan-made food products and unique foods you don't find other places. People working there are wonderful - many have been there for years and years. I'm not a beer drinker, but they also have an extensive selection of beer (not the common brands). Absolutely worth checking out!

Christian S.

Yelp
Good Meats, wine, beer, and much more at this store in the pleasant Cheshire Village neighborhood. Yes, they still carry the Dutch Import foods they sold years ago while on Kalamazoo Ave in Boston Square. The staff is as friendly as they've ever been and the store has all the Dutchy neatness it ever had. It's worth going to this store and walking around if you feel a little blue just for the friendly people who jostle about and great you.

W S.

Yelp
I live down the street, and would much rather drive a little farther to Ken's. Prices are SKY HIGH and closed on Sundays.

Emily H.

Yelp
Great local market with an excellent cheese selection. Nice beer selection. A good variety of specialty grocery items. Reminds me of the small-scale markets in northern California. I wish they would stock Kalamazoo Coffee... stock my favorite coffee and I would change my rating to 5 stars!

Diann H.

Yelp
I really like the store. I love the smell of the smoker when I walk in the door. I wish they would post their weekly ad online.

Andrea M.

Yelp
What a fabulous little grocery store! They have a nice produce selection, a wide variety of cheeses, a real butcher counter and an awesome craft beer selection! The staff is super friendly. Every neighborhood should have a store like Kingma's!

John P.

Yelp
Love this place! While it's not a place to do all of your grocery shopping, it is a great neghborhood spot to pick up a few things or some specialty items. Good fresh produce, excellent cheese selections, and a nice olive bar are some of the highlights. It's also a great place to find rare sauces and seasoning packets. The garden section has good prices, the staff is very friendly and always helpful.
