A Hand Roll Sushi Counter With an Attached Highball Bar Lands in the Heart of Old Town - Eater DC

"Upstairs at 728 King Street, a gold-adorned bar called King's Ransom replaces PX. At King's Ransom, beverage director Jon Schott (the People's Drug) and Alex Taylor (Hank's Oyster Bar) will pour Japanese whiskeys and employ a rare toki highball machine to mix chilled, carbonated cocktails. While Handover has clean lines and a tranquil aesthetic, the upstairs cocktail bar skews darker. King's Ransom references the British influence over Hong Kong, complete with 23-karat gold logos of a king and moon and black velvet chairs with golden legs. Food upstairs will include bento boxes and poke bowls. Creative tuna tostadas with daikon radish arrive on an avocado shell." - Tierney Plumb

Delightfully hidden speakeasy. We had a wonderful time sitting at the bar as a group of 3 with both bartenders! I asked for a surprise tequila drink and what they mixed up for me was absolutely what I wanted! Local beers and a nice cold glass of wine too. Will return!

Google
Chicken tenders, jalapeño poppers, and mozzarella sticks. What more could a girl want? A Lambrusco spritz? Yes please. This place is tucked away. It gets kind of dark during the day because they cover the windows but still a good time to forget what time of day it is.

Google
Great hidden gem of a speakeasy. Excellent cocktails, mocktails, and the atmosphere is a vibe. Great place for a date night with your SO or friends. Fun fact: there’s a great pizza place on the first floor before you go up. Highly recommend you grab a slice on the way out. It’s a win-win for sure! 🍸🍕

Google
Kings Ransom was a cool cocktail bar. It’s upstairs and has a neat vibe. Wasn’t busy when we went. The website makes it out to be a unique and amazing experience with specialized processes but when I arrived there was nothing like that at all. It was just a regular cocktail bar. Drinks were good but not anything over the top. The bartender was nice but definitely ready to go home as couldn’t find him for a while. Overall a nice place just not as advertised.

Google
Really cool speakeasy connected to a pizza shop in Old Town Alexandria. The decor and vibes were immaculate. I ordered the daiquiri which was great. Only cons were how pricey the cocktails were & how crowded the small space got. Servers were nice but the service was slow. Would recommend for a date night but definitely make a reservation as the place gets packed.

Google
I had a really nice time here last night, the bartenders are extremely professional and knowledgable about their whiskeys! The cocktails were beautiful and delicious of course. Only thing I would recommend is they take a second look at the music playing, I think some lounge or indie music would really tie the whole aesthetic together. Will be back, so glad I found out about this place!

Google
Small bar. Great vibes. Great music. You can hear who you're talking to. Daniel was so nice, immediately smiled and provided great service. Great bartender. I loved my Spicy Little Imp. My bf loved his bees knees. I would definitely come back again

Google
We didn’t order food (the pizza smelled and looked good though), but Shannon (the bartender) makes great, well balanced drinks. The ambience of the bar is a really cool vibe to relax and have drinks. We would definitely visit again.

It's a place you'll find yourself wanting to return to again and again.

Yelp
I recommend this place for a stop on a night of barhopping. A bartender at another location down the street recommended my group stop by for a Well crafted cocktail. You enter the speakeasy through a pizza place through a stair staircase in the back of the restaurant. I love a speakeasy and the hidden vibe. It's a small spot with a dark modern vibe. The cocktails were very special. I had an old-fashioned with tobacco bitters. That was very unique. We did not stay long, but enjoyed our experience. It is pricey. A bonus is you can order pizza from downstairs and they bring it up.

Yelp
This place was okay but sort of meh. I've been twice now and both visits were lackluster. I ordered off the menu both times and felt the drinks were really generic and lacking the big fresh flavors I expect from speakeasy's. The vibe is nothing special just a small dark bar.

Yelp
A very cool spot to grab a drink. On the pricier side, but the drinks and ambiance are great. Our bartender was very friendly, and offered to make her own twist on a whiskey sour with Mezcal - this was excellent. Would highly recommend! There's a lot of cool touches to the place - their logo on the window of the second floor above the pizza place is essentially the only clue aside from reading online how to get in. They also have their own emblems on their rocks!

Yelp
The craft cocktails here are a highlight. The bartenders are masters of their craft, mixing both innovative and classic cocktails. Whether you're a fan of timeless favorites or eager to try something new, their extensive menu will not disappoint. Each drink is balanced and full of unique flavors that showcase their expertise. Adding to the appeal is the integration with the restaurant downstairs. The pizza slices are a fantastic addition, offering a delicious and satisfying accompaniment to the drinks. What really sets King's Ransom apart, though, is the staff. The bartenders are not only friendly and welcoming but also incredibly knowledgeable. They're always happy to share their recommendations and insights, ensuring that every guest finds something they'll love. Their enthusiasm and skill create a warm, engaging environment that keeps you coming back. Overall, King's Ransom Bar is an exceptional spot that combines a unique atmosphere, top-notch cocktails, and great food into one unforgettable experience. Whether you're looking for a special night out or just a place to unwind with friends, this bar is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Cute speakeasy located upstairs of a pizzeria. Not much seating - first come, first serve. On a Friday night, the place was very busy! We had to wait around for folks to leave before getting some bar seats. The cocktails are unique and tasty. I got the "sin and tonic" and I enjoyed it. I'm not even a gin drinker. Service was good. I would visit again.

Yelp
Sometimes Old Town feels touristy but somehow lacking vibrancy. King's Ransom brings the energy back. Tucked away upstairs this is a cocktail bar that delivers with excellent drinks. In menu of drinks included twists to standard cocktail list such as adding coconut to a bourbon drink. This place can become very crowded and timing can make a difference. Service is supported by several bartenders so you do not need to wait too long. It's a good place to enjoy a drink or two.

Yelp
Decided to check out this "speakeasy" on King Street, it's upstairs of a restaurant, not extremely hard to find, I won't ruin the experience of finding it. We came on a Friday evening and it wasn't too busy, the AC didn't appear to be working so it was 81 degrees in the bar (they had a thermometer we saw). We would have stayed longer had it not been so hot, they had bar food but we didn't eat anything there. Has potential to be a cool place for a bar crawl situation on King St.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this cute like bar while exploring Alexandria and my partner and I were completely blown away. From the music to the relaxing ambiance -- this bar is really a one stop shop to network, decompress after work, meet an old friend, or new ones. Shannon, one of the bar tenders, stood out the most. She worked not only the bar but the tables too. You could tell there were crowd regulars who came just for her. Not only was she welcoming but she made you feel at home. Don't know what you want to drink -- no worries she had recommendations for you. Wanting to feel adventurous -- no worries she's willing to make a random cocktail. Convinced you don't like gin -- no worries she has just the right cocktail up her sleeve and believe me she changed my mind. All this to say we decided this would be a new regular spot when we move back to the area.

Yelp
Great speak easy, fun little bar up a set of stairs and in back of a pizza place. Cocktails were great and very unusual. There was one drink that they bring out and smoke the top at the table. Overall a little pricey on drinks, but great experience. Staff was attentive and took orders at the table. My favorite was the highball. Looks almost like a large glass of water, but is perfect amount of alcohol.

Yelp
Nice bar and fantastic cocktails! It was a bit hard to find - you enter through the pizza shop, and head up the stairs. We tried their bees knees and old fashioned. The old fashioned was quite strong but had great flavor! The bees knees also didn't disappoint in flavor and had beautiful presentation. This is a very nice date night spot to grab a drink right on King street.

Yelp
Service: the bartenders were friendly, checked in after serving me, asking how the drinks were and if I wanted water. Not that I recommend it, but the bartenders were able to make a standard cocktail, even though it wasn't on the menu. The Drinks: I have 2 drinks - house daiquiri was tart and sweet, and I had to pace myself knowing it was packing a punch. The second drinks was a Suffering B***ard. The spice from the gin and ginger beer was refreshing and light, perfectly paired with the effervescence of the bubbles. I appreciated the bartenders openness to making one. Ambiance: as one might expect on a Saturday night, the place was busy. I was able to find a space in between seats at the bar right away and one of the bartenders took my order after finishing the drinks he was making. There were plenty of menus so I didn't have to wait and ask. Lush, dark interior was great for getting cozy with your date, imbibing with friends, or enjoying a drink on your own time. I would 100% return to Kings Ransom for a drink or date and look forward to my next opportunity to do so.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and stopped in for a drink after work. GM, Jacob, was serving that night and it was a treat. Jacob knew his craft and was very well versed of liquor selection. I had a seasonal old fashioned and a few other neat pours. There was this one gin called Tom Cat that snatched me (pictured). I have never had gin served neat and this one was a sipper. Cheer!

Yelp
Super cool place with a great vibe. It's located on the second floor of a historic building and has a lot of ambiance. The cocktails are a little pricey for me (I'm from St. Louis), but they are crafted and were outstanding. I had the Sour, which had shaved chocolate in it; it was divine. Who would have thought that a hint of chocolate in a whisky sour could be so good?! The bartender was so sweet and friendly. We truly enjoyed stopping in to get a pre-dinner cocktail and would visit again when we're in town.

Yelp
Tucked away in Old Town is King's Ransom. It is a very small, hidden kind of space. Great view of King Street at the front window. The drink list is eclectic. Our drinks were really boozy and a little hard to sip down (which is saying something for us!). It was a CROWDED Saturday night. Good for small parties (I wouldn't say more than 3).

Raekeymia L.

Yelp
Love the vibes of this place and the bartender is really friendly! I ordered the espresso and I will be back here!

Yelp
Hidden speakeasy that you can enter from the pizzeria or their main entrance. The sign is super hidden and the bar is on the 2nd floor. The ambiance is very nice and not crowded as they do have limited of seats. The menu is simple and has good variety, I ended up getting the bee's knee that they recently took it off the menu. Our drinks all came out really great and balanced.

Yelp
KR is a lovely cocktail bar/speakeasy in old town that checks all the boxes for a great experience! Although it was fairly busy, I stopped in a on Friday evening and was able to grab a window seat right away for my friend and I that had a view down to the street. The bartender came over right away to discuss the menu, and walk through what options we may like based on our mood. My friend was looking for a specific drink she had tried previously, and we were informed the menu does change seasonally, but if they had the ingredients on spot they would be happy to make a drink not listed. However, we decided to order from their current menu and I opted for the Bees Knees. It was the PERFECT summer drink - both refreshing and packed with flavor. For the second drink the bartender made us French 75s (off menu), but they were fantastic. You can rest assured that any cocktail they make will meet if not exceed your expectations. Plus the bartenders and both kind and helpful and will definitely help you pick the drink that's best for you! The only thing that was a little "tricky" was finding the entrance door. It is above a pizza shop and while you can enter through there, there is a door off of Columbus St. to go directly upstairs to the bar. There is a small mounted sign on the brick to look out for.

Yelp
This is a pretty small bar located in old town Alexandria. It is attached to a sushi restaurant but there is a separate entrance for the speakeasy. It is located on the second level. They have pretty good drinks here but it is not the cheapest. It is first come first serve. You'll notice a bright neon light as you go upstairs. The bar is lit up tables have small candles. Otherwise, it is dark in here. They have two bathrooms gender neutral. Service can be a bit slow here so I order two drinks at a time. Street parking available.

Yelp
I happened to unexpectedly be in the area, and I just happened to check my speakeasy map (yes, I made one) and BOOM, this place was right across the street! There's no way I was going to pass up! So I gathered the troops and headed over. The glow of green was stunning in this one! And connected to a pizza spot -- come on now! As with most speakeasies, there isn't a ton of space, but I think 30 could've fitted pretty easily -- only because, at least that day, you aren't required to sit at the bar to stand in that area. But then again, a counter against the opposite wall had menus on it, so it's meant to stand at. Yeah, 30 easily, but you would be dealing with a bar crowd. There were several drink options (and the ability to order pizza, which I resisted), and the bartender said he could make a special gin drink. I have no idea what it was, but the one that me and 4 other people got was awesome! I think he used Hendricks, but I'm not 100% sure. It wasn't too sweet and didn't taste too strong, though I know it was no weak drink. From the music and colors to the overall vibe of the place I would come back -- though the drink prices were literally 3x what I was paying across the street. But it's a speakeasy, so it's to be expected.

Yelp
Top quality drinks and great service in a very cool location in Old Town! Definitely hope to return here again! You can definitely spend a good amount here, but the ambiance is worth the proverbial price of admission.

Yelp
It was hot as hell in this place. I would definitely return once they fix the air. The drinks were good tho.

Yelp
I never feel as cool as when I find my way into a speakeasy! This didn't disappoint. Drinks: The margarita looked fantastic. I had a mocktail made just to my taste, and it was complex and really good! Service: AB was awesome. Very happy with service. Ambiance: The cool part is the hidden nature from the outside and the going in. Inside, it's a small but intimate space with ample bar seating and a few larger tables. I'd return!

Yelp
How cool is this place. We almost gave up. We walked here from urban and only saw the pizza shop. I walked around the side and luckily I watched a couple walk in a side door and I followed in and found the bar upstairs. The service was great the bar wasn't full when we arrived around ish but it did fill up by the time we left. Pizza was pretty good too no complaints

Breana T.

Yelp
Wouldn't suggest this place. Roach on the wall and when the bar tender came and got it, but unsure if a manager was notified about the situation and the bar tender did not wash his hands after removing the roach. Additionally, nothing was comped or offered to be comped.
google avatar

Sharmane G.

Yelp
An absolutely lovely speakeasy with a cool pizza joint in the downstairs. The door is on the side of the pizza restaurant (on S Columbus St). I got the Whiskey sour drink (called sour) and it was super smooth --such a wonderful drink and the bartender was so nice and accommodating. Water was also served along with the drinks. Overall the atmosphere was intimate and dark, quiet since it was a Sunday afternoon but otherwise very lovely and excellent service. I'd love to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
A chill and laid back atmosphere!! My evening had started with a mediocre dinner, but I decided to stop by for a nightcap and King's Ransom lifted my spirits!! We arrived through the side door which certainly provided a speakeasy vibe. The place was busy and there was not a seat in sight, however after a few short minutes a table opened up and we were able to sit. Our server acknowledged us and made sure the drinks kept coming!! I asked for a recommendation and ended up getting the strawberry daiquiri! Which is not what I would typically order as I find them to be overly sweet. This was the best strawberry daiquiri I have ever had!!! I loved it so much I ordered two!! It was well balanced and not too sweet! I would come here again in a heartbeat!!

Tracy T.

Yelp
Unbelievable location hideaway. Great drinks and service. Bartender the best!! Great selection of drinks. True ambiance of a Speakeasy.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
Awesome speak easy with fantastic craft cocktails. These dudes know their booze. These are some surprising off the wall cocktails. Don't come here expecting Jack and Diet or any common dive bar drink. There is food from downstairs available if you're hungry.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
The layout is a bit narrow, making it both crowded and noisy. Depends what you're into. Excellent cocktails though, and you can order pizza from Handover.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, amazing service! I can't recommend this place enough! Thank you Richard!!!

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for a while so on a random Thursday night, gave it a try. The decor is nice, the space is dimly lit and intimate but this was definitely a one and done for me. It is definitely a speakeasy with two entrances with one being accessed through a pizza joint and the other from the side street. The menu is limited and facilitated by the downstairs pizza shop. The bar is nice with a variety of liquors available. We each had a pizza slice (meat lovers and veggie) and each was good. My friend thought his Kind's Manhattan was "excellent" and my Moscow mule was "meh" to say the least. The bartenders provided decent service but still this place did not impress enough to warrant a second visit especially when there are so many other options nearby.
google avatar

Yelp
I love a bar I can't find! Even looking straight at the building, with google maps telling me "You have arrived" I could not find the place. It's marked by a small plaque and that is all I am going to tell you ;) Heads up though, if you are looking for a nice quiet place, this isn't it. For one, there's music (not "club" loud but still adds to the din) and the bar is small and narrow which easily makes a small crowd sound much noisier. However, there are great seats at the very front that overlook King's street if you can snag them and the drinks are pretty on point. I enjoyed their Margarita (this isn't your standard tequila drink and I highly recommend it), their Daiquiri (again, not what you think but delicious!) and their house spritz. All were well executed... and paired nicely with a slice of late night, crispy thin crust pizza... FYI ~ Seating is first come, first serve, but there is a nice ledge around the back wall that you hang at until seats at the bar or table free up. We may have been lucky, but we only had to wait a few minutes for seats to become available. All-in-all -- I will be back... if I can find it again ;)

Cat B.

Yelp
It was ok. Wait staff were tentative and friendly. Bar was loud and crowded which was a bit surprising. Did not have a speakeasy vibe as reviews said (in my opinion). I'm pretty picky when it comes to my alcohol and I did not like any of the ones I tried. This is all personal opinion, but for a younger crowd I think would be great just not for this 50yo.
google avatar

Yelp
I was not expecting this place to be such a vibe, but it was the perfect spot for late-night drinks. We popped in around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. It's a speakeasy, so you definitely have to enter through the pizza shop and look suspicious but it's totally worth it. Seating around the time we got in was non-existent, but within 10 minutes of waiting, seats at the bar freed up. The menu was different from what I saw on Yelp BUT they still had a great selection. I opted for the Daiquiri and my partner had the Corpse Reviver and Margarita. The Daiquiri was sooooo good. So good and smooth that I had three, then stumbled on out of there. I tasted the Corpse Reviver, too, and that was also great. The bartenders were dope. The place closed at like midnight but last call was at like 12:30-ish. Might've just been their mood, but it was appreciated. Also appreciated? THE MUSIC. Oh my god, whoever controlled the playlist understood the assignment. They were playing like early to mid 2000s R&B and dancehall and I was livingggg. Can't wait to visit again. Price point for drinks: $14-18

Yelp
Being the main speakeasy in Old Town, King's Ransom is inconspicuous off South Columbus Street. This is a great place to take your friends visiting the area to get started for a night in the town. Dimly lit this is a great place to sit at the bar and chat with your friends on non-busy nights. However, during peak time it can get a bit crowded in the tight space. Seating is limited and can be uncomfortable. Although the drinks may be unique, the entire experience is inhibited by the poor spatial setup. Pro Tip - if you do want beer instead of a cocktail, you can buy it downstairs at the pizza shop and bring it up. Overall - good place to get started, but not a finisher - better during off peak hours.
google avatar

Yelp
The seats were not comfortable The drinks were okay- some had no flavor and others tasted terribly odd The waitress didn't seem to know about the drinks to be able to recommend them to us. But- the presentation was nice and they had cool ice cubes. The decor and lighting was interesting and the bathrooms were very clean. To make this place better, I suggest a larger menu to choose from and the staff could brush up on cocktail flavors and profiles so that you can adequately talk about the options. For a $18 drink, I would love for it to taste like something. I had the martini and it was the worst martini I've ever had and my sister n law had a wine spritzer thing that tasted like it had a million things that didn't go together. My brother had the highball and that was the better drink at the table.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Ambiance is dark and seductive, very nice to come on a date. Staff was so nice! We had the chance to chat with (i believe was a manager) and they gave us insightful places to eat in the DMV area! We only came for drinks but wow were they delicious and thoughtfully curated!
google avatar

Yelp
I suppose you could call it a speak easy but more-so would call it quaint cocktail bar. If you're looking for the exact location look for the Handover Sushi restaurant and go upstairs. Or you can enter from the side door on S Columbus St. The place is small so if you're coming on a busy night, try for reservations or expect to wait a bit. The bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt. The menu has some unique cocktails, though when we went they were out of several ingredients for the ones we wanted most. Overall solid place for a few cocktails or a bite of sushi.

Yelp
Kings Ransom is a great little nook for snazzy drinks and cozy atmosphere. I've come a couple of different times with friends and again for the TMNT specialty drinks! The staff are friendly and helpful. Sometimes the wait can be a little much, but never enough to be completely annoyed or turned off from a recurring visit!
google avatar

Chandler D.

Yelp
This is a nice place to hang out at! The atmosphere upstairs is unique but be sure to get there early to grab a seat as it'll get crowded quickly with the limited space. The cocktails are delicious and the sushi is unique! What we thought was neat as well that they had a cool stamp to put on their ice cubs!

Yelp
My husband and I finally visited King's Ransom after years of saying "we need to find that speakeasy on King Street sometime." Well, we were wondering King Street enjoying one of the nice Spring evenings that makes you long for summer to arrive faster and decided to go find that speakeasy above Handover Pizza. The entrance to King's Ransom is actually on the side street coming off from King Street. It is not had to find, if you know to look for normal looking colonial house door. The king shaped metal plaque hanging to the right-side helps affirm you are at the right place. Once you walk in, head up a flight of stairs and you will emerge into a fairly large open bar area, where you are warmly welcomed. I asked about reservations, since we did not have one and was happy to hear they are not necessary and I don't think they even take them. We were lucky enough to be able to sit by the window overlooking King Street and watch passers by as the sunset. Our bar tender was very kind and helped us with any menu questions. She also mentioned you can order pizza from the restaurant downstairs and they bring it up to you. We had already eaten dinner at Elaine's; so we just stopped for a cocktail and the atmosphere. We tried the Mayme Taylor and the King's Manhattan. Both were absolutely scrumptious. We have been to several speakeasies in the DMV and this was the first one that did not require reservations. I appreciated the laid back atmosphere. We will definitely return. Thank you for a great experience!! :-)

Yelp
Great location with a really good atmosphere. Modern speakeasy vibe with amazing service! Shannon was a great bartender and the cocktails were top notch. Didn't get food but it's nice to have the option!

A new go-to spot in the heart of old town. We loved the ambiance. Have to get drinks made by Shannon. She provided excellent service. Not only did she create new drinks for my date and I but she is also very friendly, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My friends and I came here for drinks. It was pretty crowded upstairs, which was a good sign. Their cocktail menu was solid. I got some watermelon drink. It was very refreshing! I loved the cucumber garnish and the ice cube was really cool, but I definitely wish it was smaller and not the whole glass since that means that much less drink. They also had a good food menu! Their sushi was so good and the seaweed salad was delicious too. A very fun place, but you'll probably spend a good amount of money here. Service was decently fast and attentive, too.

Yelp
Great ambiance and great cocktails! We enjoyed our time here. Heads up, there's a side door if walking through the pizza shop feels strange to you.

Yelp
Amazing experience. The bartender Richard is awesome. I had a margarita that was one of the best cocktails I've ever had! Such a great time!

Yelp
Kings Ransom is an elegant craft cocktail bar with snacks you can order. It is on the 2nd floor of the Ramen/Sushi restaurant, you enter in from the first floor, walk all the way to the end and take the stairs up to the second floor. Around 6pm on Friday, it wasn't too busy and we're able to get a seat from the bar. They have a good menu with variety of cocktails and the bartenders are also able to make drinks based on your personal preference/taste. I got the watermelon high ball and was very tasty and refreshing with a cucumber slice garnished. Would definitely come back if in the area to try other drinks on their menu!

Yelp
Although I don't think this place is officially a speakeasy, it definitely has a speakeasy vibe, especially with how unmarked and somewhat hidden the entrance is. We went here on a Wednesday night and had no issues getting a table. The bartender was very nice and recommended a few drinks based on what we said we liked. We got the clover club, bees knees and coconut daiquiri. All three were incredible, but the coconut daiquiri was definitely the crowd pleaser! We had to order seconds! Definitely recommend this place for anyone who enjoys good cocktail bars or even speakeasies.
