The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes on Mackinac Island | Eater Detroit

"Chef Shawn Fearon, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, first came to Mackinac as one of the island’s many summertime work visa employees. More than 20 years later, he owns Kingston Kitchen — which not only serves Caribbean flavors that remind Shawn of home but is also one of two restaurants on island that stay open year round. This gem, located just off the main drag on the east side of Hoban Street, is a locals’ favorite for good reason. Look for dishes such as ackee and saltfish, curried goat, and jerk-dusted salmon. Don’t forget to stay cool with a pint of sorrel beer, a Jamaican favorite. Ferrying to the Island from the St. Ignace side of the Mackinac Bridge? Start your vacation early by popping into Kingston Kitchen’s second location, which just opened in the port city this spring." - Stacey Brugeman

This place was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Planked Fish and it did not disappoint. Large piece of white fish seasoned to perfection. Crispy baked potatoes surrounding the fish and fresh vegetables. Champagne butter sauce and capers So yummy. Would definitely recommend eating here. We went at around 7 pm on a Saturday night and did not have a wait. The food was ordered, friendly waitress and arrived in a timely manner. We got go see some other customers dinners and appetizers and they looked great too.

I've spent plenty of time in Jamaica, and one of the main reasons I keep returning is the incredible cuisine. Kingston Kitchen is genuinely authentic! Their menu is packed with classic Jamaican dishes, offering so many tempting options that enthusiasts might struggle to choose. If you're new to Jamaican cuisine, you simply can't go wrong here--I could happily eat at Kingston Kitchen every day. We ordered the Jerk Chicken and the Planked Whitefish, both dishes were outstanding, bursting with rich, authentic Jamaican flavors. The service was swift, courteous, and professional. A couple dining nearby was celebrating their 42nd wedding anniversary on the island and mentioned they'd already visited Kingston Kitchen three times during their stay! If you're visiting Mackinac Island, Kingston Kitchen is an absolute must-try!

Google
I’ve never had Jamaican food and I’m not sure how it ended up here, but damn is it good. Candise hooked me up with the good stuff: Bammy, tastes like donuts, must get. Got the fried chicken, the bomb. Look at the presentation on this whitefish!!! Treat yourself.

Google
Don't skip this place! The food and drinks are some of the best on the island. We were blown away by the variety and flavors. We shared an appetizer sampler and jerk chicken sandwich for lunch. We left so full from lunch that we almost skipped dinner entirely 😂

Hungry for exceptionally delicious food delivered with island hospitality...? Search no more! This place nails it! I've been going back here for a couple of years and always stop here. Top chefs from Jamaica bring a synergy of flavors to every dish on the menu! Are you super hungry? Get the ribs ..going healthy ? The planked white fish is a must. It's plated on a board with toasted mashed potatoes and bright, colorful veggies. It's to die for. This place is a must!

We stopped by this restaurant on our first night on the island and the food was amazing. We ordered chicken curry and the oxtail. Both were amazing. The meats were so tender and the sauce was just so flavorful. The food made us feel warm and homey on a chilly night. The experience was so good that we had to stop by on our second night. This time the jerk chicken and especially the goat Curry did not disappoint. The goat curry was so good. Meat was again so tender and the curry was so tasty that even the pickiest either in my family enjoyed it. This is for sure our go-to restaurant next time we visit the island.

Google
The food was incredible … like, this is such a gem on the island. Braised oxtail, delicious. Jamaican Fried chicken, game changer. Mac n cheese, amazing. Beef patty, certified authentic.

Google
The red striped chicken sandwich is excellent. Beef tips are flavorful, but a bit tough for my liking. They appear to be flank steak. Service is friendly. One of the nicer spots on the island.

Yelp
I love this restaurant so much!!!! The service and the food was exceptional. So much so that I downloaded yelp just to give this place 5 stars. I highly recommend this place and it is the best restaurant on Mackinac island.

Yelp
Incredible food, fun drinks and a great patio for watching some people but not too busy. I wouldn't blame you for sticking with the Jamaican food, it's extremely authentic. I had the curry goat and was quite pleased. Saw someone getting the trifecta and it looked stunning - I asked them and they said it was a must get, but I was full at that point.

Yelp
Such a wonderful dinner at Kingston Kitchen. I am from Jamaica & it definitely tasted like home, authentic & delicious. Went back the next day to take pics & the Chef Shawn gave us a warm welcome back and asked how our experience was. He cares about his customers. Kudos also to our waitress Colette who went above & beyond taking care of us. The combo appetizer was delicious...as were all the entrees. If your on the island you must visit this gem.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had in quite some time. The jerk chicken was as good as one would expect and the mac and cheese entree is the best I have ever had to date. Friendly service and a nice view of the street from the porch seating.

Yelp
The servers were very nice, but it was quite busy, so a bit slow. Our food was not great. I got the special which was a risotto with sausage/chicken and it was so rich I could barely eat it. And my husband got the whitefish served on a plank and it had boxed mashed potatoes surrounding the fish that was all falling off / aka a mess everywhere.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I are on Mackinac Island for a few days and decided to try Kingston kitchen. We were not disappointed. My husband had Jerk chicken and I had coconut curry chicken. They were outstanding! Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was great. I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
The place is awesome! The jerk chicken is to die for and they have a great drink menu and beer selections. Came here twice to eat, even tho it's very expensive and the first time the service wasn't the best, i will come back easily when on the island every time. Worth the wait and the hassle if the food is that delicious!

Yelp
I enjoyed such a delightful evening here! Came for dinner and everything from the warm greeting we received at the door to the food and drink was exceptional. We came on a Wednesday evening in May and were able to be seated immediately. We ordered drinks. My dining companion got their drink special of the day which was some sort of rum deliciousness. I opted for their spin on an aperol spritz, which tasted delicious and was festively garnished (fruit, umbrella, mini flag--oh my!). For my main dish, I went for the coconut chicken curry. I'm so glad I did. The chicken curry flavorful, creamy, and melt in your mouth tender. It came served with rice and beans, which were everything rice and beans ought to be. It also had fried sweet plantains, which were super buttery, sweet, and close-your-eyes-while-you-eat-them-good. Our server was an absolute delight. She checked in on us regularly and was incredibly accommodating and kind. Wonderful first dinner on the island! Get to it!

Yelp
We really enjoyed this place! Service: 5/5 so friendly and welcoming, we had Chantelle as our waitress and she was fantastic. Food: very good and lots of different things to try. We really enjoyed the apps and the BBQ sauce chicken and chicken sandwiches. You can't go wrong with good flavor here. 5/5 Drinks: awesome! If you love beaches or tiki drinks you will like their offerings. They also have some incredible looking Bloody Mary options that are customizable. They also do custom hard seltzer or sparkling water drinks which we loved. 5/5 We will return here for sure on our next visit. We got to sit on the porch as well which was fantastic and we highly recommend if weather permits.

Yelp
So much flavor!!!! The jerk chicken was so tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. There is a little kick but nothing too over powering especially when you pair it with the sweet plantains. The calamari was tender and the jerk dipping sauce was delicious. The waitress was beyond nice, friendly, and attentive. The drinks are strong and very good.

Chris V.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent. Wednesday live music was a lot of fun too. We were surprised how many options and cocktails they had. Would definitely stay with the traditional Jamaican dishes.

Yelp
We loved the outside seating that accommodated our party of eight. The jerk chicken was extremely good and our server was amazingly friendly.

Yelp
Delicious, generous portions, creative menu, wonderful staff and service, and for a moment or two, you might think you are in Jamaica! A must place to eat, lunch or dinner, when you visit Mackinac Island.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in the door we felt welcomed by the staff. Our server was fantastic & offered several suggestions. We had: the halibut special, fried chicken wrap, jerk chicken sandwich and goat curry. Everything was fabulous. You know it's good when I dive in & forget to take a picture! I can't recommend this place enough. Great vibe, staff & food. What more could you ask for?

Yelp
Last night's meal was an all-timer! I am part Jamaican and this is the best Jam Down food I've had outside Jamaica, England and Canada! Warm service, devastatingly good rum punch and Bushwhackers were only surpassed by amazing oxtail, pork nachos, jerk chicken, curried goat and chicken that amazing jerk whitefish dip! I'm forgetting everything we ordered, but nothing disappointed. We were a party of 13 and our server couldn't have done any better than she did with our rowdy family get together. We closed the place down with the red velvet cake and tshirts. Amazing food, atmosphere and service.

Yelp
Wowza! NOW THIS is the kind of food you expect on a well-traveled island. Kingston rocks! We ate last night, with no wait, and had very friendly and fast service. We ordered from the recommendations of our server -- the Jamaican fried chicken, the special Planked whitefish, and the Escovitch fish. All were huge portions and prepared with fantastic flavors. This place knows how to cook. Many Jamaican restaurants rely primarily on jerk seasoning only, but this place cooks with a variety of seasoning and flavors....the true island way. We are only at Mackinac Island for 3 days, but we will probably have to return here again before we leave. If you are looking for fantastic flavor and friendly service...THIS. IS. THE. SPOT.

Yelp
A Jamaican restaurant on Mackinac Island? What a treat. We all enjoyed our food: cheese balls to start, oxtail, jerk pork, and kids Mac and cheese with fries. I also got a flight of drinks. Next time I'd go with the prickly pear drink. Yum! Everything was on island time, but everything has been that way since we got in town. So just relax, enjoy!
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
The nicest staff ever great you at the door like they have been waiting all day for your arrival. Then they serve you a drink from a very creative cocktail list, leading to a dinner of Jamaican comfort food. I kid you not, this is the BEST fried chicken batter I have ever had. Plus we learned about different Jamaican foods and learned we liked plantains. The restaurant is cozy, clean, with plenty of room between tables.

Yelp
We ate here after being caught in a summer rainfall. We were freezing and order hot tea to warm up and some lunch as we sat outside. My daughter had the Jamaican Jerk Burger (can't remember if that's what it was called). She hasn't stopped talking about it for over a year. The pineapple on it made it over the top scrumptious. The food was amazing and the service was amazing as well. If we ever return to Mackinaw Island we will be back.

Yelp
I had an incredible experience at The Kingston Kitchen with my family. The standout dish was the six-cheese ackee dip - it was unbelievably creamy and full of flavor. Unfortunately, the accompanying chips were stale, which was a letdown. Despite this, I believe it might have been a one-time issue. The Sink or Swim main course was a showstopper for my sister and me - it was indeed the best meal we have ever had. On the downside, my boyfriend's crispy chicken wrap was a significant disappointment, as it was unappetizing and was left uneaten. Surprisingly, they still included it on the bill, which was a letdown. On a positive note, my dad's tomahawk steak was phenomenal and monumental - my boyfriend couldn't resist indulging in half of it. The coconut rum cake was terrific, pretty strong for my taste, and it was huge. Aniko, our server, was outstanding - he was attentive, quick, and charming. Despite the mixed experiences with the food, we look forward to returning.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place to lunch and it absolutely blew my mind away. Not only is the service phenomenal (our waitress was the nicest lady ever who totally hyped my friend and I up), but the flavor of everything was fresh and authentic. We got the calamari to start and the jerk aioli that it's served with is TO DIE FOR. Also the Jamaican slaw dressing is yellow mustard based so if you're a fan, you'll love it. I got the beef and cheese patties which were flavorful and had a nice flaky outside to it. The fries that it came with were not anything outstanding, but the homemade ketchup is the real winner here. I can't remember exactly what is in it, but I want to say it's cranberry. It's a really interesting sweet twist on traditional ketchup but it was really freaking good! My friend got the Calypso pork sandwich which she thought was great. Portion sizes are more than enough for 1 person. Overall, definitely worth coming here if you're looking to try a new cuisine or if you're just hungry!

Yelp
We were fortunate to stumble upon this slightly-off-the-main-drag restaurant on Mackinac Island. Food prices in the island are quite high. Almost every sit-down restaurant we looked at had dinner prices into the $20s-$30s for entrees. Kingston is different - offering delicious Jamaican cuisine. The sorrel sangria cocktail I ordered before dinner was large, festive, and full of flavor, unlike some of the cocktails I've had elsewhere on the island that seemed diluted. But our food. When you're paying those prices, the food better hold up, am I right? At Kingston, the food shines. We ordered two dishes and split them, though the portions were generous enough that I gave the rest of my 1/2s to my husband. First dish was off the Jamaican section of the menu - the coconut curry chicken. Mmmmm.... This dish was delish! I'm not a big fan of beans, but they were lightly mixed in with the rice, not overpowering at all. The second dish we chose was the jerk chicken fettuccine, also fantastic. I loved the sauce - ample but not heavy. We may come back for it. The food took time (not too much) to come out after we ordered which tells me they were preparing it to order and it felt fresh. This also meant we could sip our drinks, relax, and enjoy a leisurely meal. It feeling as though we were being pushed through like tourist cattle. Our server and the host wormhole seated us were delightful - helpful in offering drink or food selections. Bottom line. You'll pay big bucks for dinner on the island regardless. So you may as well come here to eat & drink well and leave satisfied you found this little gem on the island!

Yelp
Amazing jamaican food! We came here on jamaican independence day, and they were having a celebratory fish fry. We tried the jamaican jerk chicken and the fried fish--the food was fresh and tasty. Loved all the spices and flavors! The service was spectacular. They have a porch that is dog friendly, as well!

Yelp
On a recent visit to Mackinac Island after a 5 year hiatus from the island, my group of friends and I decided to try this place which was new to us. As a native son of the Caribbean, I was excited to see a Jamaican restaurant on Mackinac Island. The restaurant did not disappoint. The food was amazing and the service fast and friendly. I had the classic jerk chicken and it was awesome. There were plenty of menu items to choose from which spanned a cross section of Jamaican cuisine. There was something for everyone. The authenticity and attention to detail was very apparent. This place has become my favorite full service restaurant to eat at while on Mackinac Island. Don't miss out on this Caribbean gem right in the heart of Mackinac. I'll certainly be back.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Loved the friendly service here (5/5), the food was more of a 3.5/5 for me, but perhaps it was just the two entrees that we ordered. We loved the flavors of the goat curry, but there were a lot of tiny bones that made it difficult to eat (4/5). Our second dish was the planked whitefish which was just a tad too dry (3/5). They have a fun 3 drink sampler for $22 where you can try 3 different drinks at once if you can't decide!
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
Great service, Great food, Great place! Overheard a conversation about an authentic Jamaican restaurant on Mackinac Island being good and it was great! Portions were big, and the quality was there. Highly recommend the Jerk Chicken and Akee dip. My husband told me the food tasted like a home cooked meal and we've been coming to Mackinac for 20+ years.

Yelp
My companion and I stopped into the Kingston Kitchen for dinner this evening and were so glad we did!! We were greeted and seated immediately at a lovely outdoor table. Our server Amoy was phenomenal!! She took our drink order and helped with our selections. After her encouragement, I opted for Curried Goat. I'd never had goat before but she assured me it was one of her favorites and is delicious....and she was right. The meat was tender, flavorful and oh sooooo good! My companion had the Jerk Chicken Sandwich and she thoroughly enjoyed her meal as well. I highly recommend Kingston Kitchen when visiting Mackinac Island. You won't be disappointed!! 5 Stars *****
google avatar

Cory C.

Yelp
Based on my experience overall, this place is a 3.5 for me, but I'm rounding up to 4 stars. I regret not getting the oxtail, but my whole family was ordering it and I wanted to try something else. The oxtail was seasoned perfectly and was fall-off-the-bone tender. I ended up ordering the jerk chicken. It had great seasoning and the dark meat was good, but the white meat was quite dry. As for the rice and beans: the rice tasted like instant rice, but I enjoyed the flavor (it had the same flavor of the Seeds of Change garlic brown rice/quinoa I get from Costco). I was not a fan of the fried plantains, but that's my personal taste (I don't like those in general). I ordered "festival" on the side, and was not a fan. They are basically dense breadsticks. They were really dense and dry, and the inside was bitter...it tasted like maybe there was too much baking powder in it. We ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer: my fault for not looking through the Yelp photos first to confirm, but we were extremely disappointed there were only 3 shrimp for $22! There wasn't even enough for each of us to have 1. The shrimp was overcooked and tough. The onion straws that came with the shrimp tasted better, honestly. Moral of the story: steer clear of sides and appetizers, and stick with the oxtail! You won't be disappointed with that dish.

Yelp
A little taste of Jamaica on Mackinac island, this was probably the best meal we had. Caribbean Jerk Nachos are a MUST HAVE. Since leaving, I've thought about them more than a handful of times and wishing I could be transported right back. The back of the menu has the more authentic meals, so I would also recommend those especially.

tooty f.

Yelp
This place has great food and okay prices the service there was okay but it was busy this place is probably the best place on the island with good portions
google avatar

Dana J.

Yelp
Wow. I've only had Jerk Chicken a handful of times, but this was some of the most tender and flavorful chicken I've had. I will be back specifically for this. My son had the steak which he loved, and wife enjoyed her coconut shrimp. Took home some red velvet cake for late night eats, and was equally great. Our server Monique was prompt, attentive, and super nice. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Elah N.

Yelp
Our new favorite place to eat! With a variety of vegetarian options, the meal portions are quite large, and the prices are mid to high (which is typical for the restaurants in the island). We dined outside but the inside atmosphere is just as beautiful. The staff was splendid and catered to our needs. I don't give out 5 stars often but when I do...I mean it. Our family recommends this establishment!
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
Food was good, average for Jamaican style food. Drinks were too strong and poorly mixed. Restaurant dated with poor theme. Service was average. We were unfortunately served raw coconut shrimps. Cooked on outside raw inside. We at the rest of the appetizer. We told them we were served raw shrimp. Their solution was to give us 40% off the appetizer since the shrimp was 1/3 the appetizer. Bare minimum of appropriate for this, as it was a health and safety issues. Probably won't be back. Better places exist on the island.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
Back again two years later and the food is just as fabulous. Still the best restaurant on Mackinac. I had the goat curry which was super tender. My wife's Jamaican chicken dish was very good too. The big surprise was my daughter got the traditional (aka American style) fried chicken, and it was one of the best fried chicken dinners I've ever tasted. We will always eat here when visiting Mackinac!

Yelp
First impressions: the outside looks great - white house with colorful foliage and outdoor decor including American and Jamaican flags. Nice curb appeal and very inviting. The front porch has outdoor patio seating. Indoors, however, does not match the outdoors. The inside looks like an old country tavern. Appearance: 3.5 Service: Arrived around 12:15. Seated immediately. Not too full. Andrew was our server. Nice man - very professional and attentive. Ordered our food around 12:30. I ordered the white fish sandwich. Hubby ordered the coconut curry chicken. Food came at 1:00. Took a lite longer than most places on the island to get our food but I assume it takes relatively longer to cook Jamaican food. Service - 4 stars. Food: my whitefish sandwich could have fed 2 people. It was very good. The aioli sauce and coleslaw made it. The fries and homeade ketchup were yummy. Hubby says he would give his coconut curry chicken 5 stars. He asked for hot sauce and it was HOT and good! He did wish they gave more plantains. Food and  overall value: 4.5 stars.

Eric L.

Yelp
This place is delightfully unexpected for northern Michigan. I ordered a huge, tasty pot roast and my wife ordered a fantastic risotto with scallops and lobster topper. We were fortunate to have a sunny day and ate outside with a chill bob marley ambiance. The drinks are tropical vibe and very creative. You'd best be hungry if you want to finish! We loved everything about this place.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Food was not as spicy as it is in Jamaica but I know most Americans can't eat it like that. Also understand you are in the island and prices are high. Now for the food! Great flavor of you want your jerk more crispy tell them. Other than that you are good to go.
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
Great food and good vibes. Made me want to visit the Caribbean! Had the Jerk Chicken and it was awesome. I don't know if it was authentic, but I do know it was delicious. It's a little pricy but worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was really good. The atmosphere was awesome. The service was a little bit slow. The food taste really good. I had the red stripe sandwich. It was super delicious. I would go back there again.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service we had the jerk chicken and oxtail with sweet plantain and rice and it was delicious. Big portion. Jerk Chicken
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Good food, though mine was a bit cold. I had the curry chicken. It was good, but didn't quite have the flavor I'd say an Indian curry dish. Very nice and pleasant servers

Joshua P.

Yelp
Amazing food and drink. The portions were big and everyone at my table got something different and there was no complaints from anyone.

Mary W.

Yelp
Another great experience at Kingston Kitchen on Mackinac Island. The Jamaican cuisine is excellent. The lobster bisque is worth the trip alone. Our waitress Kasia was lovely.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Been to the Island dozens of times but never stopped here to eat. Big mistake. Hands down, no questions or hesitation, this is the BEST restaurant on Mackinac Island. The Curry Goat was insane. Tons of flavor and the goat was so tender. Don't worry if you've never had goat. It is SO good. Trust me and order it!!! The Jerk Chicken Nachos were delish. Plenty of chicken, seasoned to jerk perfection! Almost forgot to compliment the bartender for a phenomenal drink...the Kingston Carre. Sooo good!
google avatar

Karl G.

Yelp
Seriously always some of the best food Mackinac Island has to offer. Great service, fun drinks, Jamaican flair. The jerk is fantastic - the planked whitefish amazing (always). Never had a bad experience and love our servers. The Jamaican Fried chicken is a hidden gem!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Food and service were wonderful. Especially after a bad experience at the Carriage House. Lobster Mac and Cheese was plentiful and had a wonderful taste. Had to cut the lobster and there was a large amount of fresh lobster. Husband had Jamaican fried chicken that was cooked perfectly. Sat outside on a beautiful evening. Absolutely no negatives.

Yelp
Amazing food, high quality service and great drinks. They are dog friendly and really go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. I highly recommend it for food and drinks.

Yelp
Great food . White fish was delicious. Drinks are a little to sweet for me... Service was good. Place looks nice and clean.
