Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Tokyo - Tokyo - The Infatuation

"Here’s the question we ask when judging any udon spot: Are the cold zaru noodles neatly bundled together like a princess’s ponytail? At Kirimugiya Jinroku, the udon indeed looks like Rapunzel’s golden locks: smooth, tangle-free, and glossy. Beyond the zaru, they offer other variations, such as noodles served in piping hot soup or topped with mentaiko. Kirimugiya Jinroku also makes excellent tempura with a thin, shattering batter, the star of which is the soft-boiled egg, with an intact amber and oozy yolk center. Kirimugiya Jiroku has two locations. The main Shinjuku restaurant can get crowded, so we like the one in Naruko because it’s less busy, which means less time in line and more time eating thick, bouncy udon." - kiera wright ruiz

Small udon restaurant that was clearly popular with the locals - one of our favorite meals on our trip to Japan. The noodles were fresh and both the hot and cold preparations were so flavorful and perfect. The tempura was great too. I’d recommend to anyone visiting the area. FYI, cash only

This was our last stop in Tokyo and I'm glad we ended on the trip with this meal. We went in the evening and had to wait for a bit. Even though it was busy, the servers were really kind and patient. The udon was so fresh and had the perfect texture. We tried a cold one and a hot one, we both preferred the cold one as it kept the chewy texture better, but honestly both good. We know this is an udon place but tempura though... it was really good. The batter was light, crispy, flavourful and not that oily. It brought out the flavours of the veggies/prawn/egg.

This place was one of the highlights of my trip. Probably in the top 5 meals of my entire and was so good I went back a second time before I left. It popular and small so there is often a wait but it is well worth it. I think the flavor stands out more in the cold noodle and their chicken tempura is some of the most flavorful chicken i’ve ever had. Truly I cannot speak highly enough of this place!!!

*accidently wrote review in wrong restaurant - this review is from January 2025* Did a few days around Tokyo and Osaka, and this was the BEST udon I had on my trip. Incredibly fresh noodles that are cleanly and artfully cut, tempura was freshly fried, chicken and shrimp was so tender, and best of all: the tempura egg was cooked to absolute perfection. It's been 10 days since I had my last bowl and I'm still thinking about that egg. I'm an udon connoisseur and if you are too, you will be thoroughly satisfied eating here. Best experience! After writing this review 8 months later I still think about this Udon spot. I miss it and will definitely come back when I visit Japan next time!

I tried their zaru udon with chicken and egg. And also the camembert cheese and sweet potato. - udon: the udon served cold, and they has a dipping sauce which giving you saltiness and umaminess. Unique, and really good. But i think the main star of their food is their tempura, which didnt failed me. The egg tempura, chicken, cheese, and sweet potato all really nice. Crunchy, soft, and cooked perfectly. Overall, worth place to eat. But dont expect it without any queuing line

Google
Great spot for udon. Came here after wandering around the Shinjuku tourist traps struggling to find somewhere local ish to get a decent meal. Walked past this place and a lovely server with blue hair and a cap came outside and ushered us in. Absolutely saved our first day here, thankyou! English menu was available and around 20k yen ea for udon and a beer. Definitely recommend. Locals here and tourists welcome.

Really good food and atmosphere! Udon and tempura was perfectly cooked. Tried both the hot and cold ones and both was cooked to absolute perfection. Had a line even at 8 pm but it was worth it. The hot soup was incredible, but the cold one was good too. I slightly enjoyed the hot soup more. Tempura was freshly fried and light. Highly recommended

Came here at night around 9 pm, there’s no queue, we were immediately get seated. I ordered mentaiko udon, for mentaiko lover this is so tasty, the natural salty from the cod roe makes the udon really tasty. I also ordered sweet potato tempura, soft boiled egg tempura and cammembert cheese tempura. The sweet potato is really nice and crispy, the soft boiled egg level is just nice, so yummy, and the most unexpected flavour is the cammember cheese tempura, this is a must try, it comes with the dipping, the dipping taste is like honey and something else but it really goes well.
