On the Grid : Kishimoto

"I'm generally pretty sceptical when a business claims to be the best at something, especially as brazenly as putting it on the awning of your storefront as is the case with Kishimoto. However, this quaint little gem of a Japanese eatery might just have me convinced otherwise. Everything from here is prepared with the utmost attention to detail from the highest quality ingredients and plated in lavish arrangements. The square shaped nigiri sushi and the matsutake tempura are favourites of mine, as is the grilled mackerel when available. Get there early with your whole party present as the line up can be long and you won't be seated if you don't have everyone there." - Asterios Moutsokapas

Kishimoto | Bon Appétit

"GO HERE: for some of the city’s best (and most affordable) sushi, a coup considering that Vancouver is a North American sushi capital. Named after chef and owner Akira Kishimoto, this unassuming spot is as friendly as it is serious about its food. ORDER THE: house speciality: oshizushi, impeccable pressed sushi with imaginative flavor pairings. You can’t go wrong with the salmon, served in a jar filled with cherrywood smoke. Then get whatever assorted sashimi is available (flown in straight from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market), very photogenic oyster shooters, and, if you have time to wait for it, textbook-perfect okonomiyaki. THE VIBE IS: chummy and enthusiastic. Behind the bar, chefs look up to smile at new customers before resuming their laser focus on the tasks before them, while diners of every age eat with wide-eyed enthusiasm. The affordable menu means you’ll likely dine next to one of many regulars, all of whom have their own strategy for snagging one of the endlessly coveted seats. PRACTICAL STUFF: Open Wednesday to Sunday, from 5 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. No reservations, so be prepared to wait a bit or you can call ahead for takeout and make a picnic of it at nearby McSpadden Park. —Lindsay Anderson" - Condé Nast

I came here as an invite with some work colleagues, and an uncle. Our experience here was the bomb. Our most memorable dish was the smoked aburi in the glass. I could eat those all day, mind you it's pricey. The caterpillar roll was very cute in presentation and delicious as well. All the seafood was at high quality and very very fresh. Parking is very easy everywhere too. As for our services, very attentive. I love how they take their time to explain each and every dish. The decor is updated and it's cozy. I had a great time here and I would definitely come back again. Prices are on the high side, but you definitely have to try this place at least once. I'm addicted.

Had a wonderful experience at dinner here yesterday evening. My husband, son, and I decided to try their sampler dishes, so chose appetizer, tempura, and dessert plates to share (in addition to eel, salmon, and smoked oshi!) Staff was friendly and attentive, food was not only delicious but beautifully presented - such artistic talent! We enjoyed having the chefs come to our table to explain what everything was! Best Japanese food I’ve had - kudos to chef and staff for a great time!

Hands down some of the best sushi in Vancouver. We didn’t have a reservation so we ended up waiting close to 2 hours for a spot. Luckily there are lots of bars in the vicinity. The fish was super fresh, which is likely why it’s on the pricier side for the portion. Overall had a great experience here.

Google
Fair service from staff, however, the food was mediocre for the sky high prices. We had dined at Kishimoto many times over the years for special occasions and we were always served quality food, but our latest experience was a complete disappointment. The food quality was comparable to that of a mediocre sushi restaurant in Vancouver. The $16 dynamite roll lacked flavour and substance; the spicy salmon roll came to our table lathered in spicy sauce, so we could barely taste the delicate salmon flavour. The only item that we actually enjoyed was the salmon oshi. This will most likely be our last visit to this establishment, which is a bit disappointing as my husband and I had shared great memories here over delicious food.

Google
Great spot for elevated Japanese cuisine! The location is small, a little plain, but nicely maintained and quite classy! Service is good too, as I felt like the staff treated me respectfully, were attentive, and prepared the food quickly. I've tried several items on the menu, including the Chicken Karaage and Dynamite Roll. I personally think that this is the best Chicken Karaage I've had in a while, with delicious flavours and chicken that had a crisp exterior and a soft, juicy interior. The wasabi seems real rather than the cheaper stuff you get at lower tier sushi spots. The bathroom is a great experience! Unique decorations, nice ambient lighting, and a clean space makes this a pleasing room to use. It is large and accessible as well. Fittings are nice but could be fancier. The large mirror is very useful to have. Bathroom: 7.5/10 You will pay a premium for the dishes, and I'm not sure that the premium is worth the improvement in the quality of the food. Still nice to go there once in a while!

December 2024 Eat with your eyes. Very flavorful sushi and preparing with love by the chef owner. We enjoyed our family dinner here. We picked this place for our last night in Vancouver and we were delighted by our choices. My rating 5 as very satisfied Taste 5/5 Temperature 5/5 Cleanliness 5/5 Attentiveness and courteous 4/5 Only 8 tables in the restaurant. Waitstaff did a good job informing us our orders but very transactional experience. Not typical Japanese hospitality. Will I revisit? Not sure. Too many good choice restaurants in Vancouver Will I recommend? Yes. Need to try it.

Google
I don’t normally leave reviews but our experience tonight really left us blown away! We decided to stop by on a whim and luckily got a spot at the bar. Watching the chefs meticulously assemble each dish was mesmerizing and such a joy to experience. We had very late dinner reservations at a different restaurant and needed to pass time but not overfill ourselves so we only ordered a small amount. But they still exceeded with their service and even treated us to some delicious bites on the house. We’re so impressed that we made a reservation to come back again. Try this place out! You won’t regret it :) 10/10

Google
Went straight for their gorgeous Chirashi Donburi — 20 little squares of premium ingredients like bluefin tuna, uni, wagyu beef, salmon, and roe. Super fresh and full of flavor! We also tried Zensai Set,a variety of small bites, cute but not super memorable. Omakase Nigiri Trio is fresh and satisfying. Spicy Tuna Oshi, crispy rice base was fun, but the sauce was a bit too spicy and tangy for me. Smoked Oshi is erved under a glass dome with intense smoky aroma.

Yelp
If I could eat the salmon oshi every day, i would!! My mom also loved her shiso ume roll and my parents said the nigiri they had was some of the best they've tried. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Pretty nice Japanese restaurant doing things other Japanese restaurants in town don't do, but it's ultimately way overpriced for what you get. They have an all-vegan section of the menu, which is what got us in the door. We ordered: -Shiso Ume Roll ($8). Simple maki (6 pcs) with shiso leaf, sour plum, kombu and cucumber. Not bad. Definitely overpriced. -Veggie Roll ($14). Definitely a step above the average veggie roll, but horrendously overpriced (and it used to be $17!). -Dashi Chazuke ($23). Maybe the highlight for us -- grilled mixed mushrooms, rice, seaweed, rice crackers (apparently, though I didn't notice any), served in a delicious sesame broth. Wonderful flavours and textures. Pretty small portion for the price, but the execution was spot on. -Veggie Okonomiyaki ($27). Huge portion, very well-made, though too much mayo. The pancake part was decadent, with a nice batter, cabbage, onions, and mushrooms. Really tasty, but it's decadent and even a bit much to handle for 2 people. A main criticism I have is that their vegan menu has basically no dishes that are protein-centric: no tofu dishes or anything. The food quality was generally very good (albeit overpriced), but the menu curation could use some work to be more balanced. Good, friendly service, creative food, pleasant atmosphere. I'd return if they revamp the vegan menu, even at the current (unjustifiably high) price level.

Yelp
My cousins brought us here for dinner. Came here pretty late, within last hour of closing so no wait. Service was also fast, and since we were one of the last ones in the house we got a special treat! Caterpillar roll - Cute roll with a caterpillar face... Good amount of unagi inside and good ratio of filling to rice. Would recommend Kaarage - Fried chicken. Very lightly battered but well seasoned. Slightly cripsy and still very tasty! Salmon OSHI - Pressed sushi with salmon and a loads of sauce. Good balance of everything on top of the rice. Lightly torched to give it a nice char flavour and smell. Nice to try, but I suspect getting more would become very filling. Smoked OSHI - Got a taste of the house special. 10/10 for presentation as it come in a clear bowl of smoked where it is released only at your table. The smoke over powers the butane torch flavour adding a more natural and enjoyable scent to the sushi.

Yelp
We went to Kishimoto Japanese Restaurant on Commercial Drive in Vancouver for a birthday celebration, and it was a unique experience! Kishimoto is not just a regular Japanese restaurant. They always make new dishes, and each plate looks like a piece of art. It's like eating in a pretty art gallery! We ordered the following dishes, and the dishes with * have more details. - Chirashi Donburi * - Unagi Oshi - Morel Gyoza * - Salmon Sashimi - Chopped Scallop Roll - Seasonal Tempura * Chirashi Donburi - It came with a chart showing each item. The presentation was so colourful! The sushi rice was pink and topped with seared fresh fish and other yummy toppings. So good! Morel Gyoza - It was a gyoza stuffed with morel mushrooms and homemade. You couldn't find this kind of gyoza anywhere else! So unique! Seasonal Tempura - It looked like a mini garden on our plate. The presentation was top-notch! We had a great time at Kishimoto and can't wait to return for the next occasion! Food: 4/5 Should Try! Service: 4/5 Kids: 4/5 Yay! Price: $80-$90 spent per person (dinner) Presentation: Parking: metered parking on the street Tips: * charge for tea and serve it in a small pot. * have limited space; good for small groups. * recommend making reservations. * good spot for dates and special occasion celebrations. Would I Return: Yes ‍

Yelp
Great experience, the food was amazing, some really great tasting dishes. One of my best Sushi experiences from a taste perspective. Spicy Salmon sashimi was excellent. The service was a bit slow with bringing drinks but picked up once the plates started coming. Overall a great experience and an extremely tasty dinner

Yelp
The flavours, the presentation, are simply perfect!!! Such a treat, never have not been thrilled to spend time there!

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars I easily would! We started off with the homemade pickles. Surprised how refreshing this dish was. It was almost like a pleasant palate cleanser - just the right combination of sweet mixed in with the perfect acidity. It was our first time here so we had to try the Chirashi Donburi which was a lot smaller than it looked in photos but tasted as great as it looked. There was an assortment of fresh fish with every bite delivering such amazing flavors. The star of the night was the smoked Oshi. Wow! You get this heavenly taste of cherry wood smoke with every bite of the salmon and it leaves you wanting more. Service was also top notch! I recommend making a reservation. You will NOT be disappointed.

Yelp
I made reservation by phone. Bookings are available for 5pm, 6:45pm and 8pm and limited to 1.5 hours. We arrived early about 6:20pm and they seated us. It wasn't too crowded yet. It's a cute little place and service was great. We ordered the following to share: Spicy chopped scallop roll Bluefin negitoro roll Spicy tuna oshi Nabeyaki udon Veggie okonomiyaki Salmon oshi Homemade gyoza Smoked oshi Everything was delicious. I was excited to try oshi since we do not have that in California. Tbh, it tasted the same as other sushi. I enjoyed the smoked flavor of the smoked sushi. The spicy chopped scallop roll was my favorite. So yummy. My least favorite was the homemade gyoza. The Gorgonzola was too strong. It overpower the gyoza. The Nabeyaki udon broth was spectacular. Wagyu Stock soup was so oishii. I couldn't stop slurping up the soup.

Yelp
I have been waiting for a chance to try this highly rated restaurant in Vancouver for a while now. We were able to come on a weekday and found street parking to be still pretty limited. After circling for a few minutes around the block, we were able to find parking on the street within the same block of the restaurant. Contrary to how busy the overall block was, Kishimoto was not full and were seated right away. The interior was casual, relaxed, and pretty loud with folks enjoying Japanese food with their family and friends. It did not feel like I was transported to Japan per se but it still felt warm and welcoming. We tried smoked oshi salmon nigiri, agedashi mochi, assorted sashimi (3 kinds - $30), daily specials - Isaki and Uni, and Gindara Misozuke. Opening the smoked oshi salmon nigiri glass container full of smoke was quite an experience. I enjoyed the unique smoky flavor in this unique salmon nigiri but I was ready to move onto other dishes. Agedashi mochi was elegant in presentation but lacked the savory punch in my opinion. The daily specials were Isaki and Uni and they were very fresh and probably the highlight of our meal. The sashimi plate was very good and quite fresh as they claimed. Gindara Mosizuke was pretty unique and it reminded me of one of my favorite dishes, Misoyaki Butterfish, which I would have preferred. It seems to me that Kishimoto caters more to the Western customers as they have a lot more offerings in their special rolls and focus on visual presentations. The range of their offerings on nigiri sushi and sashimi varieties was mediocre at best, although the quality of their fish was very good. All in all, I dare say that a place like Tom Sushi offers more value for those who seek traditional nigiri and sashimi.

Yelp
Took my nephew here for his birthday. I wanted him to try a quality Japanese eatery before he set out to university. Everything was so delicious! We had the Chirashi Donburi which came with a reference chart to show what each spoonful of item is. Miso soup was so rich and flavorful with a tomato base. Ebi Oshi and Unagi Oshi were delicious. Spicy Tuna Oshi had just the right kick and creaminess. Probably the best chicken Karaage I've had. Duck Soba is such a nice segway from the regular cold buckwheat soba. Finished off with the Dragon Roll, Caterpillar Roll and Chopped Scallop Roll. Service, ambience and quality were all fantastic! I hadn't been here in nearly 10 years and the quality is still there.

Yelp
Out of everything Kishimoto serves, the Smoked Oshi Sushi is easily the star dish. It's a single piece of Salmon Oshi Sushi that's seared and infused with delicious cherry wood smoke. The combination is an earthy, smokey initial flavor profile that hits your senses, followed by the delectable melt-in-your-mouth texture and taste of the Salmon Oshi. I had the pleasure of trying this amazing piece of smokey nigiri, on my last trip to Vancouver - and it was the best sushi I had that week, perhaps even in the last year! Yelp
So, the real question is not whether the food is awesome, it is! It is not whether the service is amazing, it is! The real question is whether a 45min-1 hr wait is worth it ?! Depending on the size of thr group, the wait times could even be greater than that. For us, it was a simple party of 2, which was a much easier configuration to manage, and even then we had a 45 minute wait time. I was here a decade ago, and although time has lapsed, the food is still exception. This is a great place for great japanese dining. If there is one negative the decor hasn't changed in 10 years, but then again, given the narrow room, it is hard to do much with what they have. So to answer the question, is the wait worth it....., YES! Loved it z! Thank you!

Yelp
I used to come to this restaurant with my ex, the food is very good, but we did find somewhere else better. The service is very attentive, and I love the ambiance, it is cozy and has Japanese decoration. Overall, it is a good restaurant to come to if you're a couple.

Yelp
No words to describe this gem. Absolutely amazing and my favorite sushi spot in Vancouver. We ordered the salmon and ebi oshi, seafood okonomiyaki, chu toro nigiri and the warabi mochi. The oshi sushi is so good in Vancouver but this tops it all! They had so much flavor, the ebi oshi almost tasted like a lemony pasta which was wild and mindblowing and the salmon one tasted a little spicy and creamy which was so good. I'm a big salmon fan so any salmon sushi will be satisfying. The seafood okonomiyaki for us was a lot and I think I couldn't finish it at all. My partner said it tasted like a "big crab casserole" if you like that you can go for it but for me it was a bit much but I tried it anyway. The chu toro here won my heart. They told me the chu toro was a good choice because it was prime time for it to be served. They got the freshest fish and gave it to us in nigiri form with just a little wasabi on top and that- my friend, won the best sushi I had in my entire life. And for that, this gets a million stars. I definitely would recommend asking the waiter what they recommend for nigiri because they have the latest list on the freshest fish. The warabi mochi came super traditional and I was shocked but I shouldn't have been because everything seems to be super authentic here but I'm used to warabi mochi coming in green matcha cubes with ice cream (I'm from NY OK we don't have amazing Japanese food like here - affordable ones at least) but this came the way it's supposed to be in Japan! I was so happy this restaurant made my entire night and I left so satisfied and literally in joy. Thank you, Kishimoto, for making sushi so good and so affordable! (PS- meaning affordable for a New Yorker bc the sushi in New York is 3x more expensive)

Gel G.

Yelp
Kishikoto Japanese Kitchen Great food, service and ambiance! Not your typical Japanese restaurant. Food: Everything's delicious. Must-try: Veggie Okonomiyaki Service: Great team, very accommodating! Atmosphere: Clean and nice place to dine in.
google avatar

Yelp
Kishimoto offers a wide range of delicious and fresh sushi and Japanese food. The seafood was consistently fresh and flavourful, and the sushi was clearly well made. Only problem is perhaps they are a bit too popular or inefficient. We had put a second order shortly after we finished the initial plate of sushi, but the second order took an additional 45 minutes to get to our table. So, put in your full orders immediately!
google avatar

Ericka L.

Yelp
Some of the best sushi outside Japan... and I've eaten sushi in Japan. And not just the standards (though their take on standards was great). Make sure to have whatever is on special.
google avatar

Yelp
Kishimoto is a nice little gem on Commercial Drive. I've been really enjoying ordering for takeout as this place is quite tiny. Recos: - Karaage 5/5: Really nicely made-- well seasoned and crispy - OMG Roll 5/5: I wasn't sure what to expect with a roll like this as none of the other places I typically go to have a roll similar to this but I love what they've done with it. It's a simple roll with such nice texture to it because of the crunch from the tempura bits. The umami flavour that's here is just so well balanced you'll eat the whole roll before you know it. -Salmon oshi 4/5: It's a well done Salmon oshi roll. It's probably not my favourite place to get oshi but this hits the spot when I'm craving Oshi

Yelp
Delicious. A slightly more upscale restaurant. I have heard the sushi is good but that is not what we were there for. We shared a bunch of dishes. The eggplant and the cauliflower dishes were delicious. The seafood okonomiyaki was fantastic. Presentation was beautiful. It is the little details, like the amazing presentation which is why you are paying slightly more. We loved it and would definitely go back.

Yelp
Excellent food, very nice service, superb presentation! Nice way to spend an evening with a friend in a place that was an excellent surprise!

Yelp
We made a reservation ahead of time to avoid the wait. Street parking was available as long as you were patient. Because the seating was limited, they put the plexiglass divider between the seats and the staff all wore the masks. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We ordered salmon Oshi, spicy tuna, dragon rolls, 3 kinds of sashimi, black cod misozuke, Ebi Oshisushi, Okonomiyaki, vegetable tempura and sake. The service was upbeat and efficient. All the food was phenomenal and we were impressed by the creativities of art and ingredients. Every bite was a joy. Great experience and we will be back!!

Yelp
I came to Kishimoto with some friends and it was my first time back since the pandemic. Previously they did not take reservations but they do now during the pandemic. They hold your spot for 15 minutes if you are late and otherwise have a 90 min seating window. Tables were decently separated and menus were done via QR code. I got the duck soba which was very delicious. I was a bit fan of the flavour of the soup and quite enjoyed all the duck pieces. I got their salmon oshi as they are known for their oshi and did have to say it wasn't how I remembered it a few years ago. Compared to other restaurants, there is a lot more jalapeño than other places that serve oshi so that made it extra spicy. They did have a good amount of salmon which was nice. Overall not bad for oshi but since there have been some other restaurants that have done it better. Overall very friendly staff and I am a big fan of their food!

Yelp
Have been meaning to go to Kishimoto for a long time but either forget or when I do go, they are either closed or have a long waiting time. I had a craving for some good sushi and decided to make the trek to do a take out order. I ordered the sous vide duck soba, Hamachili jalapeno roll, and aburi salmon oshi roll. With a 10% pick up discount, the total came out to be approximately $46. The sous vide duck soba was tasty and but the sauce was slightly saltier than expected. However, it came with at least 7 decent pieces of tender duck - a decent value for $18. One of my favourite sashimi is hamachi so was looking forward to the Hamachili jalapeno roll. It came with 8 pieces for $15 but the hamachi quality and taste was pretty disappointing. I would not recommend. It's pretty hard to ruin aburi sushi and the salmon oshi roll, 7 pieces for $16, was pretty tasty. The seared salmon with jalapeno also had additional salmon in the middle, which was a nice surprise. Not the best aburi I've had but was a solid choice and a much better choice than the disappointing Hamachili jalapeno roll. Solid authentic Japanese joint but seems to be a bit hyped from my take out experience. May have to do an in-restaurant visit to get the full experience.

Yelp
This is the third attempt to come here when they decided to arbitrarily close the restaurant despite their hours of operation. (July 3). Are you operating a business or having a hobby?

Yelp
Awesome food. Highly recommended. We sat at the bar and had a fun time watching all the chefs made all the food like art.

Yelp
Unlike most I was never a huge fan of Kishimoto and after a recent revisit don't think I'll ever be . There's nothing intrinsically wrong with their menu but guess we're just not quite the right match for each other . It happens . While it's kinda neat to have a lit candle accompanying basically any roll you order , it's not cool to swap out the Hokkaido hotate for two tiny pieces of uni in the sashimi ( 4 kinds ) set . Funny we did also order the Hokkaido scallops as a hot dish and they're totally available so what gives ? It's also NOT cool to charge an unreasonable amount for just a side of steamed rice . How unreasonable you ask ? Let's just say it's more than anything I've ever paid or expected to fork out . Nickel and dime-ing customers is annoying at best and bad practice in general and will remain so in my book always .
google avatar

Monica N.

Yelp
Still my fave Japanese spot in the city! I love their aburi oshi sushi, especially the tuna and salmon! Also recommend their seared fish and ordering a few pieces of nigiri. The tuna is made with crispy rice and that combination with the fresh chopped tuna is perfect. I like their salmon oshi sushi more than miku honestly. If you want something more filling, their ishiyaki and soba are also good. I love their okonomiyaki too, which is such a good comfort food. Their fish is just always very fresh, and their seasonal menu makes every visit feel like a new experience while holding onto their classics.
google avatar

Austin V.

Yelp
Kishimoto was an awesome date night spot. The sushi was delicious and there were a number of other options that were great as well. Two standouts were the chefs choice sashimi (the uni was amazing) and the karaage. The service was great!

Yelp
Probably my favourite Japanese restaurant of those I visited during my recent Vancouver trip. Felt safe as the staff blocked off every other table for physical distancing. Amazingly fresh and innovative food. My favourites were the nasu dengaku (fried eggplant with sweet saikyo miso sauce), the hotate nigiri, and the black cod misozuke. The presentation of the smoked oshi had a wow factor and there was a definite smokiness that was imparted to the oshi. No advance reservations but the 45 min wait was well worth it.

Yelp
Enjoyed everything. Fokd was fresh and beautifully presented. Service was friendly. Space is not big, but very intimate.

Yelp
If I could give zero star I would. Base on how they treat customers and customers service. First off, I've been working in food service industry for long time. I've called ahead of time and asked for reservations on Friday and said I'll be there in 20 minutes.the girl who picked up the phone said there's no reservation, It's only first come first serve and HUNG UP on me. I was saying thank you but she just hung up. That's really Rude and unprofessional. after that we got to the restaurant on the two table I saw TWO RESERVATIONS on the table. That's even more upsetting. Then the girl with the eyeglasses bumped in my chair and don't even bother to say sorry. Then we got the food, I saw a white hair and pulled in front of the waiter who just served the food. All he did was just said sorry and told me to wait another 15 minutes to make a food and act like nothing happened. This is the best you can do? When we left not even single person say thank you or sorry for what just happened. Wow This is how you really treat customers. You're working in customer service industry with no service mind, bad attitude. The manager or business owners should train your staff better than this, No one would want to come to your restaurant with the staff have a bad manner and attitude like that,so RUDE, I was really have high hopes for this place and was so excited base on the review and what make it even worst is this is the first time I visit Vancouver with my family and I want to treat my parents to a nice authentic Japanese restaurant. Needless to say you should take your business somewhere else. Overall, Disrespectful to customer. No service mind. Food is mediocre. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Kishimoto is a delightful restaurant, where the quality and presentation matches the best of modern style restaurants in Tokyo. While I usually prefer a less adorned sushi, Kishimoto manages to incorporate sauces and torching while still highlighting the character and flavor of the fish. With perfect texture even from usually tricky squid and scallop, each piece is flawlessly prepared. It's hard to pick a standout, but the uni and eel are among the best I've ever had.

Yelp
Insanely delicious!!! Wow! Came here due to a recommendation from an old college friend and it blew my mind!!!! From the excellent level of service to the super tasty food, this is now for sure in the Vancouver restaurant rotation. We usually only have about a week in Van, so try and hit up the old faves but thank goodness we got in a new fave. Sushi and sashimi were super fresh. Traditional tofu dishes were tasty without being overpowering. Desserts were unique and creative. Pricier? Yes. Worth it? Without a doubt. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Amazing sushi in Vancouver. Really opened my eyes to how much better sushi is in Vancouver than Seattle (I say this as a Seattle-ite). It was spot prawn season and the spot prawns were so sweet and succulent. The scallops brushed with yuzu juice and lightly seared were AMAZING. The miso sablefish was super delicious, soft and fresh. And the hamachi bowls were amazing portion size, amazing value for the money and used sashimi-quality fish! Amazing sushi at affordable prices. Went to another sushi place the next day (STEM) that wasn't half as good and twice the price. Regretted not just retruning here.

Yelp
Solid sushi spot on commercial drive. Smoked oshi was really good! Smoke comes out as you lift the lid and the smoke really enhances the flavour. Salmon oshi was also great. They had a good rice to fish ratio. The beef for the beef tataki nigiri wasn't as tender as I expected but I liked the sauce. It reminded me of galbi sauce. Rice also fell apart very easily. Oknomiyaki was okay. Decent batter vs filling ratio. The shrimp seemed like frozen shrimp though.

Yelp
My two favourite dishes thus far would definitely be the salmon oshi and the Hamachi ishinabe. I won't discuss the salmon oshi as I'm sure everyone and their cousin already raves about it. The Hamachi ishinabe is a hot stone bowl that is loaded with flavour-- creamy (from the butter and egg) and umami with a hint of sweet and a touch of stone cooked flavour. The delicious Hamachi (yellowtail) itself is laid out in raw slices on the surface, but it cooks all the way through in the stone bowl if you stir it right away. If you like your fish to maintain some of the sashimi texture, I would avoid mixing it right away. I would recommend skipping the chicken karaage here. Although each piece has a good amount of chicken, the outside isn't crispy at all--possibly due to the sauce, which isn't particularly flavourful or interesting.

Yelp
How lucky are we to have so many delicious sushi spots in Vancouver? Kishimoto was the first place that I ever had Salmon Oshi, and I haven't turned back since. It's become one of my favourite sushi dishes and I'll order it at any Japanese restaurant that has it. They really set the bar high and I still think they're one of the best. On our most recent order of Kishimoto, we ordered the Salmon Oshi, Salmon Sashimi, Unagi Roll, Salmon Avocado Roll, and Dragon Roll. Oh, how it was so satisfying. To no surprise, everything was super delicious!

Yelp
I get lazy about writing reviews for some locations because it's Covid lockdown still in many places; they aren't stocking the variety of fresh fish that they normally would, they can't dress a take-out container fancy like an in-house plate, etc. But this deserves a review. The Edamame was perfectly cooked (not over) and perfectly salted to eat in the rental car as I drove back to my hotel. I regret that I assumed that they would just throw food in a takeout container and be done with it. I had the coolest decoration in a long time and didn't see it for what it was; a Wasabi Tree. Flip the carrot "tree stump" over and it was a butterfly. I also had an edamame and daikon radish pinwheel and a beet/daikon roll. And it was sitting in a cucumber "bridge over river" decoration. I think that it was accidental, but my dish of Rolls had a piece of Wasabi shaped like a Frog! I could be wrong, but I missed the butterfly wasabi tree, so I am assuming it was intentional! (I'll forgive them for putting beet on my dish because it was pretty and I was stupid enough to eat it. I hoped it was shaved Maguro! But it was pretty.) 3 Kinds Sashimi: Maguro, Wild Sake, Hamachi. All very good quality. 2 pieces Saba Nigiri: Fantastic flavour, nicely dressed. Spicy Dynamite Roll Spicy Tuna Roll ... I'm not sure which roll gets this (Probably the tuna) but the roll comes with a container of this WONDERFULLY smoky not-too-hot-but-so-damn-flavourful hot sauce, it was GREAT. Dipped both rolls in that! If you're looking for them on the street, their (aging) sign is hidden behind a big tree, so it's hard to find. I highly suggest the owners invest in neon SUSHI and OPEN signs for the windows. I thought that I had just walked past an old furniture store that was out of business. The traffic sucks, but it's worth ordering from here.

Yelp
Best sushi on commercial drive. Presentation is impeccable, ingredients are fresh and beautifully presented. Worth every penny. Make a reservation.

Yelp
First of all, I dread coming here ~ parking is horrible. Commercial Drive is always full and the neighborhood streets are the skinniest in BC. Kishi is good Triple Salmon Roll ~ yum Black Cod Nigiri ~ yum Toro Nigiri ~ yum Wagyu Nigiri ~ yum Spicy Tuna Oshi, Salmon Oshi ~ no matter where you go, Oshi never seems to live up to the hype. The Smoked Oshi is a cute show but again, it's just Oshi. Seating is jam-packed and loud for dinner. *My mistake not to notice the auto gratuity charge until too late, so the spotty service got a bonus :l

Yelp
One of the best Japanese restaurants in the City , the Salmon Oshi is worth the trip , and the Chicken Karaage is delicious , presentation of all their dishes is amazing , try the Uni Ikura Nigiri as well . Kishimoto has been in the same spot for 10 years and I believe the Chef used to work at "Lime" (the much missed restaurant which offered modern Japanese cooking with live music provided by local artists)

Yelp
Took my friend here from Toronto, she really enjoyed it! The presentation was photo worthy, and we enjoyed every bite. The sashimi were fresh, and chicken karaage was hot and delicious. Would come back again!

Yelp
Note that this review is for a takeout order. I love this restaurant and when I get the chance I always want to eat here but this time around I had to get takeout in order to make another appointment in the area. The prices are sort of sky high for this area of town (hence the loss of a star) but they do have efficient staff, delicious food and good takeout service. I called ahead to order and their estimated time was pretty much spot on. The food was delicious and separated into different containers to maintain their quality. However it is $$$ for this area if you're not dining in. I got a Salmon Kama (neck) and Salmon Oshi and it was already $28. Unfortunately Kishimoto will have to be a treat once in awhile versus a regular thing.

Yelp
Brought my niece for her first visit to Vancouver for the long weekend. We were craving for some good quality sushi after sitting at the border for nearly 3 hours! We chose to come here after reading the trusted yelp reviews & there were several other Japanese restaurants in the area, but boy are we glad we chose Kishimoto Japanese Kitchen! I guess we came at just the right time bc it started getting really busy when we arrived esp since it's a pretty small place. Everything we ordered was so good.! My favorite was the salmon & asparagus oshi. They brew there own shoyu here, which seems to be a little thicker & slightly saltier than other brands & with some dishes the waitress would recommend not Dipping it in shoyu. With all that food we ordered, we thought would cost a fortune, but for a moment there I thought it was happy hour! Great Price for Good Eats! Would gladly return here the next time I'm in B.C.

Yelp
I was looking for something quick and still getting my sushi fix. Food was 3.0 and not bad. The grilled salmon collar was the best thing I has but it really was the fins and meat just behind the salmon collar. Decent prices and warm servers.

Yelp
I came here by myself on a late Friday night for a quick snack and this place was still packed. Luckily, there was a spot open at the bar. I had heard about this place from a friend and was told that this place was the best ever so I came with high expectations. To start, I ordered the Smoked Salmon Oshi. It was one piece of a oshizushi (osaka style box sushi) in a glass cage of a smokey/chilled air mixture. The presentation was beautiful and it was unique to my experiences. The piece of oshizushi was quite flavorful and the chilled smoke gave it a nice additional oomph. I don't think I aired mine out enough before eating it so I did get a bit more smokiness than I bargained for, but was still happy with it. I'd recommend trying this at least once. Next, I went with the Tsukiji Sashimi Omakase. For $24 that night, I got 2 slices of torched pike mackerel, 2 pieces of stone flounder, and 2 pieces of scallop. The pike mackerel came with its own sauce and was awesome. It had great, bold flavor, was a good temperature, and the soy sauce mixture complemented the fish extremely well. The stone flounder and scallop I wasn't too pleased with at all. I wouldn't say the condition was bad, just not very flavorful like I'm used to. Maybe I got a not so good part of the actual fish/shellfish sections themselves. Unlucky. Finally, I got the salmon oshi based on reviews. I've had oshizushi before, but Kishimoto's spin on it was quite different and delicious. All the ingredients mixed in well with each other, while not being slathered in mayo like I see in the U.S. Just a warning, the jalapenos that came on my roll were quite spicy, so if you're averse to spiciness, maybe sit this one out. My only gripes about this roll were that there was a little too much rice to ingredients ratio, and the jalapeno spiciness was a little bit too overpowering, but I understand the spiciness of a jalapeno is unknown until you cut into it and taste it. The prices are a little bit higher than what I'm used to, but it is a popular restaurant so I understand supply/demand laws. Everything on the whole was really great. I was a bit bummed out that my stone flounder and scallops weren't that good, but it wasn't like they were spoiled or anything. I might have been a bit more bummed out that they had run out of what was originally in the omakase so they replaced it with the stone flounder, but I did come in late so... you win some you lose some. I would definitely try the smoked salmon oshi and at least one of the large oshi sets. Would definitely come again to try a safer omakase (salmon, tuna, hamachi), and another oshi.

Yelp
Kishimoto was highly recommended from a friend before I made a trip out to Vancouver from California. And I definitely understand and agree with the recommendation after my experience. Food: The Salmon Oshi is to die for! Seriously! We got two because we couldn't leave without stuffing ourselves with all the delicious food. It is unlike any sushi I have had in my life and the roll just melts in your mouth!! The salmon on top is seared and it is so good. I would say this a must-have on your order. I think all of the rolls are quite delicious - we ordered around 7 for 3 people. I really enjoyed the OMG roll because it had an added spice to it and the dragon roll that had eel and avocado was a great staple to our meal. The sashimi (tuna and salmon) was very tasty because you could taste how fresh it was and the presentation was beautiful! I will admit that the prices are not cheap here but I do think that the prices are reasonable for the quality of food you receive. Service: I thought the service was impeccable as our table was always clean and our water glasses were always full. It was never difficult to get a waiter's attention. Ambiance: It is a small restaurant but it is nicely decorated and it is very clean. The sushi bar is full of sushi chefs and there is a very welcoming vibe when you enter. Do keep in mind that during the weekends, there will be a bit of a wait but it is definitely worth it 100%. I am so happy that we were able to make the visit and I can't wait to come back!
