Kitchen 21 Review - Coney Island - New York - The Infatuation

"Kitchen 21 is right on the Coney Island boardwalk, and it’s roughly the size of a small airplane hangar - which is mostly why you come here. It’s a great place for when you want to grab a drink with a big group, and there’s some fairly decent bar food like burgers, pizza, and nachos. There aren’t any servers, just a counter up front and a bar where you can order. If the roof is open, hang out there - it has couches, tables, and a great view of the beach." - Bryan Kim

If I could give Kitchen 121 a Michelin 5-star rating, I absolutely would—it's my ultimate favorite spot! It’s been a long time since I’ve had food this memorable. Every single dish bursts with love, intention, and high-quality ingredients. I could eat here every day and still crave more. If there were such a thing as a million-star rating, Kitchen 121 would deserve it without a doubt. My top recommendation? The Grilled Bulgogi Salad. The bulgogi tastes like a gourmet fire-grilled meatball with the perfect smoky finish. Every ingredient in the salad is thoughtfully seasoned—nothing thrown in just for looks. The generous portions? Always polished off to the last bite! Then there’s the Salmon Rice Roll—a celebration of freshness and flavor. And don’t even get me started on the Peach Lemon Green Tea. That drink? Smooth, balanced, and luxurious—something you'd expect from a five-star resort. This time, I tried the Parmesan Jalapeño Chicken and totally fell in love. Imagine biting into perfectly tender chicken that tastes like you're eating risotto and creamy pasta all at once. The crispy crust? Reminded me of enjoying fried soft-shell crab at a coastal getaway—crunchy perfection! I've already brought different friends here four times this week because I just had to share the experience—and every single person has been blown away. I highly, highly recommend it. Now, I can only dream of having a Kitchen 121 near my home and my shop. What a dream come true that would be! ♡ Thank you to the owner chef. Save my life. all choices will be awesome with your loved ones ❤️

Google
Nice small eatery. Food is very good and fresh. Large portions. Chef usually comes out to check on you. She is very sweet. Dining in can get crowded during peak lunch hours. Definitely recommend this spot for eat in or take out.

Google
Omg, such a cute restaurant. And the food is so goood. Friendly and fast service. So glad we found this gem. The food is extremely fresh and flavorful. We got the combination sushi bowl and the beef bulgogi udon stir fry noodles. Definitely worth the drive. We'll be back!

Antwany

Google
I got some sushi and an udon bowl. The sushi was nice but nothing to write home about it wasn't too expensive so honestly great. Would've liked more ginger though. The udon bowl was very hearty and tasty a little lacking in salt but overall very nice. Would come again.

Surprisingly Light & Flavorful Korean Fried Chicken – No Feeling of Being Fed Up Here! I usually enjoy Korean fried chicken, but I often get that “fed up with the taste” feeling after just a few bites — especially when the sauce is too rich or the skin is overly greasy. That’s why I was honestly hesitant when my husband and his friends invited me to eat Korean fried chicken again today… even though I had already eaten an early lunch But wow — this one was different. The chicken was crispy but not oily, and the sauce had just the right balance of flavor- not too sweet, not too salty, and definitely not overpowering. I especially appreciated how the seasoning/sauce didn’t linger in that heavy, sickening way that makes you want to stop eating. Even after a few pieces, I still wanted more. It was light, flavorful and addictive in the best way— and it didn’t make me feel sluggish or bloated afterward. Honestly, it’s the first time in a long time that Korean fried chicken didn’t make me tap out early. If you’re like me and usually get tired of fried chicken fast, this one is definitely worth trying. A solid win — even for someone who wasn't hungry to begin with!

Google
Really good fusion restaurant. The red pepper chicken I had was delicious! Despite being sauced, the outside was not soggy and the inside was nice and juicy. The spicy salmon roll I had was also good. Definitely recommend trying this place out especially for the chicken!

Jasmine Martinez

Google
This place was delicious! The bulgogi bowl and snow cheese chicken were delicious! You self-serve yourself any sauces and water. The customer service was also nice. We will be back.

Google
Everything was delicious, food fresh and service was amazing too. Friendly staff and the chef also came to see how everything was. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
I usually take to go, so I don't know much about the ambience, but the food is good. It doesn't take too long as well.

Yelp
Love.. Love.. Love this place...Awesome Sushi, Great prices and Chef Ji is such a an amazing person very warm and welcoming and extremely talented . They do a ton of takeout as well, so the dine in aspect as far as the service setup is a more self serve, so that aspect is a little different, but is becoming more common... You can either go up the road and pay $$$ for the ambience, but you can't eat the decor..My family's go to sushi restaurant..

Yelp
I care more about food than service, so i'm bumping it up to 4 instead of 3 for that reason. TL;DR: Food was good, very popular for take out, but the dining area could use a good deep clean and redecorating. Arrival: The parking lot is a bit small, but since this place doesn't get too busy for dine in during lunch, it shouldn't be a big issue. They have a spot right in front for pick up orders. The restaurant opens at 11? but the kitchen opens at 11:30? It's a bit confusing. Menu: I came here because i wanted sushi and it had good reviews. I knew i wanted the poke bowl but they also have a selection of other offerings if that's not what you want. Everything felt well priced but the chicken doesn't come with rice which is kinda annoying. Service: Order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Utensils and condiments on the shelf to the left of the counter. A small group of people ordered before us and after they sat down we got up to order at the counter (we were initially seated because we got there before 1130). After my friend started to order, the cashier interrupted her and said he had to go put in the order for the group ahead. Why didn't he that before starting to take her order? The interaction with the cashier was a bit odd though not horrible. Ambiance: This is not a spot where you'd take someone if you were trying to impress them. The interior is in desperate need of an update and cleaning. There is a small portable fan on the floor next to the door circulating air, there are lightweight (honestly cheap-looking) partitions between some beautiful big wood tables. There are extension cords visible all over and it just doesn't feel clean and grand. Almost all the seats are also directly under AC units that were making us very cold we had to walk a circle to see where we could sit to even survive. Food: My group ordered a combo poke bowl, salmon poke bowl, crunch California roll, 2x baked salmon bowl, red pepper fried chicken. Honestly, all the food was amazing and we really enjoyed it. The baked salmon roll comes with 8 pieces but they were on the smaller side, none the less they tasted fresh and flavors worked well together. The poke bowls were very big and like other reviews said were mostly veggies and small portions of fish. The only issue here is that i asked for the pickled radishes on the side and he took the time to note it, but it did not show up that way. So if you have any allergies, just be very very careful. The fried chicken was crispy and the sauce was good and got spicier as leftovers, and it was a huge portion. As mentioned earlier, as an asian restaurant, it's sad to see rice being an extra charge and $2 for a small bowl is a bit annoying. Overall: I think we'll do take out in moving forward as the food was good but the restaurant itself was nothing to be missed.

Yelp
owner and servers were super friendly and efficient. Pretty and cozy, but lively environment. Food was really good. If you are craving sweet and savory, this is the place to go.

Yelp
Sushi's good but the entres and drink(not water) is the only thing they bring out to you. You kinda need to fetch your utensils, sauces and water which isn't clear to do so at first. You're kinda just sitting there with your food in front of you until you realize you need to go get your own stuff. Also this didn't happen to us bad when we were there we over heard one of the customers tell the staff the chicken they got was raw. But the manager ( which was super nice) made an effort to make things right and remade their meal free of charge. No hassle Lemonade was good too.

Yelp
Food was amazing every dish i had with my friends i loved it very worth the value and super tasty loved it the service was amazing and the staff was very kind and quick the decor is amazing and very cute must try

Yelp
The food was great. We ordered the Red pepper chicken which has a little kick to it but nothing unbearable. The oriental soy garlic chicken has a nice taste to it as well but not as crazy about it. The service is great. The employees are VERY welcoming and pleasant. Plenty of water available if you don't want a soft drink or one of their great homemade lemonades. Very kid-friendly.

Yelp
We all enjoyed our meals. Try the roasted Brussel sprouts! The salmon bowl was very good. Next time I want to try a hot bowl. Those looked great. The restaurant is a bit small, however we will still come back.

Yelp
We visited the establishment as we were in the Duluth area for a convention. The prices were average due sushi, but service was not up to par (strike 1). The sushi roll we had was not really cold, which should have been my red flag (strike 2). The seating was very limited and cramped, and the manger in which one must serve themselves for plates, flatware, etc. was very off-putting. Honestly, with no hostess, waitress, and no one to check on the patrons, why are we tipping up front? Strike 3 for me was the case of food poisoning that I am still suffering from - days later. *** I would not return to this establishment or recommend. ***

Yelp
If you're looking for affordable sushi/ family friendly place, this spot is amazing! The sushi is super fresh for a really good price. We had the chefs choice platter for $60 (5 rolls) but it felt like it should have been at least $85-90. This was my second time getting food here and I was surprised to how good it was. This time, I think the owner was there and she was super nice!
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
We had the crispy fried chicken, gyoza, and sushi. The place was cozy and clean. The service was great. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Nice assortment of food and good place to take kids. Good udon for kids, while $15 and little to no veggies (good for picky kids) had 2 shrimp tempura and some table mushrooms. Fried chicken was quite tasty and rainbow roll was pretty good and not pricey at $11. All in all. Good experience and would drop in with kids again!

Yelp
This is one of the best small restaurants you can go to. The food is absolutely delicious and the portions are over the top. Just wish they had one in Flowery Branch!

Raven L.

Yelp
I typically enjoy coming to this restaurant due to the unique menu items. Specifically the Caesar salad I enjoyed when I first found this location four years ago. I was disappointed the Caesar salad was no longer available to order. If you all can bring it back, please do. The ginger Caesar dressing/salad is what stood out at your restaurant. This flavor dressing was unique and set you apart from other restaurants that serve similar menu items to yours in the area. I went ahead and ordered the grilled shrimp salad. However, they didn't include any cheese or croutons which I think should be standard considering the salad is $16. The salad was nothing special. There is only one dressing flavor, lemon vinaigrette, which was average. My next visit, I will skip ordering the salad.

Yelp
This was a surprise local find! Sushi, poke bowl, bulgogi rice bowl...Oh My! Their social media is lacking, the outside of their restaurant is unassuming, but step inside for a nice vibe and bites like these! We'll be back.

Yelp
Excellent. We have had several chicken dishes with steam rice and the quality of the chicken is unbelievable. We do takeout mostly, but when you eat in the restaurant, the service is fantastic ! Love all of the sauces!
google avatar

Anasone S.

Yelp
The food is always delicious here and that is why we always come back. We even got a complimentary peach ice green tea from the chef!

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing, the service and ambiance is unforgettable and I will absolutely be back with more friends and family, this is the best Korean Food , Fried Chicken Half and Half (Snow chicken/Lemon Pepper) ! Be sure to have a nice cold drink with your meal! Cheers to Kitchen 121!!!

Yelp
Our family of 5 came here for dinner for the first time. Inside is well decorated. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. You get your own utensils and water. Food came out pretty quickly. Very impressed with the presentation of the food. Food tasted great and portion size was good. Since I eat low carb, it's not easy to find a Korean place that has much to offer with low carb. But the Bulgogi salad was perfect for me. Only complaint here is the door to the restroom keeps slamming. The door needs to be replaced with something that does not slam when it closes. Overall, great food at reasonable prices in a nice environment. Glad we came.
google avatar

Yelp
Super clean, nice and inviting atmosphere, menu has plenty to offer. I tried the grilled shrimp sushi bowl. It was excellent. Ingredients were fresh. You order and pay at the counter. Cashiers were friendly.

Yelp
It's A snatched and fire Restaurant. Me and my family shopping at Duluth, later on we find this Mini place. Wonderful! Let`s have a chance. When you first time here. Wow,How mini is it? There is like a To-Go restaurant, but it is not! All the table is very close to each other, you may feel embarrassed. Good or bad? I think it`s good for all of us, because we always talk between the WIFI, the people may need to know new friends like the old school style. Salmon (Tuna) rice paper roll The chef use seafood meat instead the rice, beautiful & low carb. The salmon (Tuna) taste like spring ,mild diet food. Let you feeling eat very health. Sushi bowl Poke sauce was great , be interesting in everything on the top. (A little idea , it would be better if the sushi rice was soft & warmer.) Snow cheese & Jalapeno parmesan Fried Chicken Very traditional Korean Fried Chicken + American Style = BOOM Cheese Never lose! Chef ji young Lee was amazing , friendly ,always smiling, like to talking with customers and give a help. She love her customers and this mini place. I think she doing this business because love & passion.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch and got lovely service at the counter. It's a self service type of place so we ordered at the counter and the food was brought to us. We tried this soy garlic chicken (boneless), combo sushi bowl, and a baked salmon roll. The soy garlic had good flavor and the chicken was tender. We weren't expecting boneless but it was tasty. It would have helped to have a side or something but the sides were sold separately. Chicken was 16. The combo sushi bowl was 13 with salmon and tuna. My only issue with it was that it had a smaller serving of protein than most poke bowls but they put more veggies instead. If you like the pickled veggies and seaweed salad, you may not mind but I'm used to seeing more protein. It was beautifully assembled with a light refreshing soy sauce like sauce. It paired well with the chicken since eating just fried chicken is kind of rough. The baked salmon roll was fair--nothing noteworthy for $10. Overall, we had a good casual experience and the food was pretty good!
google avatar

Sumedha M.

Yelp
The food was good! They give good portions and they have sauce on the side if you need it which I liked! I got the vegetable rice paper roll, yummy yummy roll, and spicy tuna roll and they were all good! The service was good too -- they gave us extra ginger which we loved! The place itself is cute -- there just enough seating which is nice!

Yelp
So...I saw the great ratings on this new restaurant, so had to go try it. The place was super-small (very cramped in?), and much more casual than I had thought. It was actually more of an eatery...as you basically place the order at the counter, and they just deliver it to your table. It was very late in the day (close to 9 pm?), and I wasn't too hungry, so just ordered this "Yummy Yummy" roll...which seemingly looked like a popular roll at this place. Well, sadly, it wasn't all that Yummy...to me, at least. They were HUGE sized rolls...but mostly rice, and not much in flavor. I only stomached 3-4 of them? Also, the presentation was kinda poor...especially compared to what I saw on Yelp. I also added a Miso Soup...but it was kind of bland in flavor. Guess the only good thing I can say was that the service (however basically just cashier and delivery service?) was very friendly. Not sure if I'll be returning too soon, I MAY be up for trying some of their other items in the future. Others rated the place so highly...so maybe I missed the best thing??

J A.

Yelp
Food was just ok Limited in portions and without the typical Korean condiments so that was disappointing As with most things these days you get less but pay more. Probably wouldn't go back
google avatar

Hong D.

Yelp
Very fresh! Service is good and friendly. I love the Combination Sushi bowl. The portions were big.
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
Kitchen 121 is an underrated Korean fast food style restaurant. It is self serve and service is fast and helpful. The food came as a pleasant surprise, the portions were perfect and the food itself tasted great. This is a perfect hangout spot or dinner spot for groups of people with their chicken portions being extremely shareable. Alongside this, there is complimentary miso soup! Only complaint I had is that the bulgogi was a little too charred for my liking and the dish was awfully dry. Overall, I would definitely come back. Definitely try their rolls!

Althea L.

Yelp
We stopped in on New Year's Eve after a long day away from home. I quickly read other reviews and thought we'd give a try. I can see why the reviews were great. I ordered lemon pepper chicken, my family ordered rolls and soup. Everything was delicious and ordering was a breeze. The restaurant, and restrooms, were clean. I'm glad we gave Kitchen 121 a try, we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this spot! It's a bit cozy space-wise but the staff is very friendly and the manager is the absolute sweetest!! The food is very solid - I enjoyed everything I tried. I highly recommend the peach green tea - super refreshing and sweet. The jalapeño Parmesan chicken is also SO good - flavorful but not overpoweringly spicy in any way. The dumplings are also very juicy and surprisingly flavorful. For someone who doesn't like dumplings, I really enjoyed these!!

Yelp
I've missed my go sushi restaurants since moving here last year from San Diego. Kitchen 121 is a little bit of home. They have a great selection of roll choices as well as other offerings ( we've tried a little bit of everything) and will definitely be going back. We try to eat there at least once a month but it's usually more like two or three times a month. Lol Some rolls are a little pricey, but they are bigger and definitely worth it. Support small business and check Kitchen 121 out.

Yelp
3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. Cute little self serve Korean/sushi place. We ordered the Korean fried garlic chicken, the nigiri appetizer, and a salmon roll. The Korean fried chicken is really good. Love the fried garlic pieces. The flavor is on point. They were boneless so a bit on the dry side. The nigiri plate was good for the price. The salmon was good but the tuna was not. It tasted like very cheap frozen tuna. I would stick to the salmon. The salmon roll was good, no complaints there. Overall, solid place for the fried chicken and the sushi with salmon.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Food was amazing, after a day out in Atlanta trying different Korean foods at festival and city events. all I was missing was some Korean fried chicken, and let me say Kitchen 121 do not disappoint. The restaurant was nice and had a cute vibe, chicken was amazing, the Peach Iced tea Lemonade was a hit as well !! Will be back for the rainbow and California rolls for sure !!
google avatar

Marcus W.

Yelp
Excellent meal with varied flavor combinations. I have to go back and try the chicken. We all loved it and the special eel role was serious. Keep cooking it up chef, it's crack!
google avatar

Steven N.

Yelp
It's always great food here. Ambience is laid back. We order at the counter and picked up utensils/water/ sauces at the station. The food comes out quick and it's delicious. Sushi rolls are generous portion.

Yelp
During our first visit, I mentioned that it was our family's first time in. I had seen other yelp reviews and made dining choices from it. I ordered the bulgogi bowl- so delicious! My husband ordered the combination sushi bowl- extra delicious!!! My daughter ordered the lemon pepper chicken- yummy!! And my son ordered the grilled salmon hot bowl- very good but I like sashimi salmon better just my opinion. We also got the yummy yummy roll- OMG so good we "fought" over it lol. I knew it was a lot of food to order, but I was curious about the brussel sprouts. The server brought me a huge sample!! They were very good too but I was so full I could barely finish the entree I ordered. All portions are humongous!! They are obviously good at planning on people not being able to finish these huge portions that they have to-go boxes readily available where the silverware bar is located. The atmosphere is very comfortable and beautiful to be surrounded by. The food comes out pretty quickly. The wait staff is pleasant and attentive. Their chef is a big deal in the food biz. I don't know why this place doesn't have a line around the building! What's funny is that the week following our visit to Kitchen 121, we were supposed to go to a birria taco restaurant that I had heard about but my husband told me he was craving Kitchen 121 and my son asked why we couldn't go to Kitchen 121, so back we went! We pretty much ordered the same things but during our second visit I wanted the combination sushi bowl and my son got the bulgogi bowl. Same "fighting" over the yummy yummy roll. It's crazy because I don't usually care for fancy sushi rolls- I prefer sashimi- but this roll is amazing!!!! The crunchy outer coating and soft inner filling are perfect together. The flavors of the filling don't overwhelm each other, and the sauce adds a perfect tang! And now I want Kitchen 121 again. Wish I took pics of the food but once we got a taste, the last thing on our minds was to take a photo

Yelp
My friends and I were craving sushi and decided to stop by! There were many options besides sushi on the menu, which we loved. Not only did they have sushi, but they also had a variety of dishes like their signature chicken, sushi bowls, and noodles. We ended up ordering the rainbow roll sushi, the sushi bowl, and the oriental soy chicken. The service was really great, and they gave us a few dumplings in addition to our order which we were very thankful for. I thought the price was reasonable for the portion that we got. We also loved how warm and homey the interior was. I will definitely come back again with my family and friends!
google avatar

Rob K.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! The food was spectacular and the service was even more friendly and amazing. I wish I lived in the area so I could go here all of the time! If it's out of your way it is absolutely worth the drive. Wish I could give more stars!
google avatar

Sarena T.

Yelp
This is such a great spot! The decor, menu, prices, portions, and service are all terrific. You order at the front and they bring your food out to you. There are dividers in between tables so there is a good amount of privacy too. There's a section where you can help yourself to water, napkins, to-go boxes, utensils, etc. I ordered the Yummy Yummy roll, which was $15. Good value for the price and it was bigger than expected! I enjoyed the taste as well, especially the fried crust. Presentation was very nice. The lady who brought out our food offered us free lemonade, which was very sweet of her!
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
Food was great, service was amazing, and the ambiance was top notch. 5 stars ... must try the noodles
google avatar

Feng W.

Yelp
Good ambiance, wonderful music, delicious food, excellent service. And to top it off, they offer a variety choice of food as well! Ranging from sushi, noodles, salad, and even hot bowls (my personal favorite). Their Yummy Yummy Roll is top tier and the Grilled Bulgogi Hot Bowl makes a perfect meal pre or post workout!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Today was my second time having sushi from here. I feel like the prices are reasonable and the sushi is very good! Will visit again.

Alex P.

Yelp
Hidden gem... Maybe? This place was not easy for me to find. The food was way way better than I expected. The chicken was tasty and fresh. The sushi was like good. Service is very much self service. You order at a counter and they bring the food to you. Napkins, silverware, plates, water and etc. are all self serve. The staff were however very welcoming and quick to assist you if you needed it. The vibe of the whole place felt cramped. But the food was good so I didn't care.

Eddie K.

Yelp
It was my 1st time back in a few years! Had dinner here on Sunday with my girlfriend and a friend of mine. The food was really good and yummy! The service was fast and good. The ambiance was pretty chill.. I'll definitely be back when I get the chance. The owner greeted us as well, which was a nice surprise.

Robby B.

Yelp
We ordered the Crunch Fried Chicken, Crunch California Roll, and Gyoza and they were delicious! The portions were very good for the price and the staff were also very kind. You simply MUST visit if you are in the area!
google avatar

Billy T.

Yelp
Cute little spot. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced. would recommend if you want some Asian Fusion dishes
google avatar

Vega K.

Yelp
Ambiance is casual but inviting and the the sushi was fresh! Food came out quick and prompt. We ordered the half and half chicken and the portion sizes were very generous. Overall the experience was great and definitely would recommend to go again!

Cole B.

Yelp
Fried chicken and bulgogi were amazing! Restaurant was clean and the service was friendly. Will be returning for sure!

Yelp
This place is relaxed and casual but the sushi is always fresh and very tasty. The dishes are creative yet simple. If you are looking for casual sushi in the Duluth area, conveniently located right off I85, this place is for you!

Yelp
I was pretty excited to try Kitchen 121 after having this spot bookmarked for years now. I believe they've had a few name changes? Food: * Garlic Soy Chicken - Tasty and crispy. * Beef Bulgogi Bowl - Filling and tasty. Great choice adding the egg on top. * Shrimp Roll - Uses imitation crab. I wasn't impressed with this roll. It was good, not great. Service: *Self-service* You order at the counter and then grab your utensils and water refills at your convenience. Ordering was easy and quick. After the food arrived to the table, the chef/owner made her rounds to ask if everything was to our satisfaction. It's a great place for a little bit of everything. There's sushi, rice bowls and fried chicken. Will definitely fill all your cravings, but not worth going out of your way for.
